ICNA RELIEF CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2012

ANNUAL REPORT 2012 ICNA RELIEF CANADA

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The year 2012 was a truly exceptional year for ICNA Relief Canada! We have started the year with the vision of local and international communities where needy and poor are empowered, families and individuals are supported in their social and financial needs, and bonds of humanity are strengthened by building bridges among various factions. We have come up with the following three major priorities for year 2012 & 2013.

1: Transparency and effectiveness in our existing

programs Alhumdullillah, we have worked very hard in 2012 to improve our processes to ensure that donors’ money is spent effectively and transparently. The steps taken to ensure effectiveness and transparency in our programs are:

- We have ensured that our MGAs, Donors and the Public receive regular updates on how and where their money is being spent. - All disbursements/allocations of international funds were approved by ICNA Relief Canada Committee (IRCC). - A proposal evaluation sub committee was formed by IRCC to evaluate each project proposal before presenting to IRCC for fund disbursement approval. - Physical visits were made to ensure the validity and effectiveness of current and proposed projects. - Financial summaries are regularly sent to ICNA Canada Board of Directors (Shura) for their information and review. - Major restructuring and cost cutting initiatives were taken to minimize the program management costs. - We are continuously improving our Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP). For 2013 disbursements, only 0.98 % is allocated for program management and 99.02 % will be going to the beneficiaries, Alhumdullillah. -We have started improving our abilities to measure our impact in communities and Insha Allah we will continue to do this work in 2013.

2: Enhancements in Domestic programs

Maximposapel Eliset chairman

It was a special year for IRC Domestic Programs! With the slogan of ‘Charity@Home’, we have launched various new programs in 2012 that included: Free Matrimonial Services, Funeral Support Fund, Foster Parenting and Seniors’ Program. We will continue to improve and enhance all of these programs across Canada during 2013. We are also determined to open a Women’s Shelter in 2013 to empower homeless and helpless women by providing them temporary housing; and personal, educational and developmental counselling in a safe environment. We have also enhanced our existing programs of Family Counselling, Food Banks, Youth Development and Emergency Financial Assistance across the country.

better services to donors, and a productive working environment for our staff and volunteers. Revenue was not our priority for year 2012-13 (as we are focusing on process improvements) but it is only with the help of Allah SWT that with very less marketing efforts we have significant increase in donor database and donations in major program areas: There was a net increase of about 600 donors this year. Zakat collections increased by 50% ($603,004 this year as compare to $300,083 last year). General Donations increased by 38% ($97,352 this year as compared to $60,414 last year). Orphan Sponsorship increased by 17% ($607,878 this year as compare to $502,692 last year). Domestic Programs increased by 23% ($257,413 this year as compare to $197,911 last year). Our total revenue was slightly lower because of a significant decrease in disaster relief funds ($792,777 this year as compared to $1,615,507 last year). Excluding disaster relief funds (and we pray for fewer disasters in the world in future as well), IRC collections were increased by about $700,000 – Alhumdullillah.

Our Rabb! Forgive us our sins and the lack of moderation in our doings, and make firm our steps and succour us against those who deny the truth. (3:147)   Despite various internal and external challenges, Alhumdullillah, with the help of Allah (SWT) and your support we were able to make significant progress in all three areas. This is a time of change for us, and we are confident that the significant progress we’ve been making in empowering the communities locally and internationally will continue, with the generous contributions of our supporters and the dedication of our staff and volunteers.

3: Better working environment

Productivity of staff and volunteers is a major factor that impacts the quality of service non-profit charity organizations can offer. Insha Allah IRC office will be moving to a more efficient place to provide

The first Seniors Get-Together program for Women 55+ was attended by over 40 participants in Mississauga during February, 2013. This program was done in collaboration with local chapter of ICNA Canada Sisters Wing. We plan to replicate this event for other locations. The next Seniors Get-Together event is scheduled in Milton, Ontario during March, 2013.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS: Major Campaigns of 2012 ICNA Relief Canada had a very busy year in 2012 with its regular International Programs as well as the series of Emergency and Disaster situations across the globe. Our regular, seasonal activities included the following campaigns: Global Zabiha 2012: Zabiha was performed in 13 countries. This includes Syria, Palestine, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Burma, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leon, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Number of Shares and Donations slightly decreased this year for following 2 reasons: Muslim Welfare Center, who used to do their Zabiha through IRC, has started to do on their own. We have decided to go with realistic rates (bit higher than other organizations) to ensure that correct number of Zabiha are performed on donors behalf. There is a chance of incorrect number Zabiha in case of lower rates (lower than actual cost). Some organizations have offered those lower rates to secure more donors. Alhumdullillah, Global Zabiha Program was done with record 3.33% management expenses and 6.6% program expenses. This was not possible without Allah’s help and support from our new international partners in Zabiha. Implementation reports were posted on IRC website for donors’ information.

image

Disaster & Emergency Relief ICNA Relief was able to raise funds

image

for and offer assistance to several specific Disaster & Emergency level situations in several countries. These included the Assam Floods + Riots, the Syrian Civil War, the Rohingya Conflict in Burma, Floods & Karachi Factory Fire in Pakistan, Humanitarian crises in Gaza, Floods in the Philippines, as well as Hurricane Sandy in the USA amongst others. These Disaster and Emergency Relief projects were in addition to our ongoing development projects. Funds Collected = $792,777 Funds Disbursed/Allocated = $792,777

Orphan Sponsorship Program Improvements The Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) is one of ICNA Relief’s most successful programs, benefitting over 2300 orphan children annually, Alhamdulillah. In 2012, ICNA Relief took a few major steps to further image improve upon the delivery of the Orphan Sponsorship Program by:

image

Reviewing all of our Project Implementing Partners around the world, Implementing newer, more efficient, Reporting Guidelines for Partners and Upgrading our Funds Release Criteria for Funding of our Partners, based on a quarterly review of the Implementation Reports submitted to us.
