Welcome from HACU President and CEO Welcome to San Antonio, the city where the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities was founded 40 years ago, and where we are hosting our 15th International Conference, “Bridging Nations to Advance Higher Education.” We are especially grateful to the Alamo Colleges District for serving as the title sponsor during this momentous time.

The theme for our International Conference demonstrates the undeniable need for an international perspective in preparing America’s students for a future that extends well beyond our nation’s borders. It is imperative that we equip the next generation of leaders in academia, business and science for a rapidly changing world, especially in the uncertain times we are living through. We are excited to host this event in the City of San Antonio, which has a diverse culture and a welcoming atmosphere.

Our three-day conference will feature speakers, researchers, educators, and industry leaders sharing insights, best practices, and innovative approaches to advance international education. University of California Alianza MX: Strategies for Advancing Binational Partnerships Mission East This session will provide an overview of how the University of California Alianza MX (Alianza MX) initiative supports systemwide engagement with Mexico. UC Alianza MX provides funding and logistical support for innovative research collaboration, academic mobility, and other engagement activities through calls for proposals, hosting meetings and events, and facilitating dialogue on key issues in the bilateral cooperation agenda. These strategies, along with a binational team, provides a unique foundation to support the UC system as Mexico’s premier international academic partner. The presentation will discuss how UC Alianza MX supports systemwide strategies to build sustainable academic and research partnerships with Mexico. Program leadership will provide an overview of existing binational partnerships, funding opportunities, and approaches to identifying strategic collaboration. Assessing High-Impact Experiential Learning in Creative Practicums Mission West

The Career Connection: Aligning International Education with Career Readiness La Villita C

This presentation examines a course-embedded practicum model implemented in creative disciplines at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Framed as a High-Impact Practice, the model integrates experiential learning with a triangulated assessment approach incorporating student selfevaluations, employer feedback, and program evaluation data. Findings from the pilot cohort demonstrate measurable gains in professional competencies, career clarity, and workplace readiness, offering an evidence-based framework for equitable experiential learning in Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

With the global demand for higher education’s output focus on workforce development, we are to ensure students are equipped with global perspective and international experience. This session demonstrates high-impact, global experiential learning models that align with career readiness through study/intern abroad, private/public partnership pathway programs, and virtual internships. Attendees will gain strategies through these models and tools to help articulate the value of global experiences. The session will be segmented with time for the audience to ask questions and share their own experiences.

HACU Partner Institutions & Alamo Expeditions: Study Abroad Reinvented Mission West This session highlights how Alamo Colleges District and its HACU international partners in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Spain are co-creating accessible, high-impact study abroad opportunities through the Alamo Global Expeditions model.

Presenters will share strategies for designing short-term programs that center employability, global competencies, and reciprocal mobility. Attendees will gain insights into building international partnerships that reduce costs, expand student participation, and align with institutional goals for equity, workforce development, and global engagement.

The session will open with a short Mentimeter poll to prompt reflection, followed by an interactive discussion with panelists and audience on building equitable study abroad models through HACU partnerships. Participants will be invited to share challenges, strategies, and future opportunities to create accessible, high-impact mobility across the HACU network.

Alejandra Bueno Chief Program Officer for Global Engagement & Learning Alamo Colleges District Strengthening Global Alliances through HACU’s UCLM Prescriber Courses La Villita C This presentation examines the HACU’s UCLM Prescriber Teacher Courses, an innovative internationalization strategy that brings faculty from HACU-member institutions to Toledo, Spain, for intensive SFL (Spanish as a Foreign Language) methodological training and cultural immersion.

By transforming participating professors into institutional prescribers, the program strengthens binational partnerships, supports strategic international recruitment, and embeds Spanish-language mobility within institutional priorities.

The initiative offers a replicable model for sustainable academic collaboration and long-term global engagement.

The session will outline the program’s design and objectives, followed by an overview of pedagogical and cultural components. It will present data on institutional impact, strategies for partnership-building, and lessons learned.

A facilitated discussion will invite participants to explore replication possibilities within their own internationalization frameworks.

Bridging International Education, Career Readiness & Employer-EdTech Partnerships: Advancing Global Student Outcomes for Social Mobility Mission East This session explores how international education experiences, integrated with career development services, strategic employer relations, and innovative EdTech partnerships, can drive student social mobility globally.

Through collaborative frameworks guided by the Global Career Development Council (GCDC) and The Forum on Education Abroad (The Forum), higher-education leadership will discover how to co-construct and measure impactful global competencies, workforce-readiness, and employerindustry aligned outcomes. Attendees will gain access to practical resources, relevant research, and opportunities to co-construct solutions that integrate global experiential learning, career services, and employer engagement, driving data-driven student-outcome strategies. We will engage participants in three phases: (1) reflection and stakeholder mapping of international education + career services + employer/EdTech ecosystems; (2) case breakout examining how GCDC/The Forum models are enabling co-construction of solutions; and (3) interactive design of a pilot action plan with tools for experiential learning, employer/EdTech partnerships, and outcome-measurement strategies.

Opening the Cultural Doors with a HETS Partnership La Boveda The HETS organization is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

University of Houston-Downtown is based in Houston, Texas. Through the University of Houston-Downtown’s 12year membership, so many undergraduates have had the opportunity to participate in programs focused on cultural exchange and research dissemination. The three main programs which stand out include the Best Practices Student Research Showcase held in February, the newest program entitled HETS Passport, and the collaboration with SUMM, an island-wide college/industry career fair. UHD and HETS will present descriptions of the three focal areas comprising the talk, each from their own perspectives (academic and HETS). Additionally, images will be presented in addition to testimonials (recorded and live) from students who have actually participated in these unique cultural experiences.

This session highlights strategies for developing study abroad programs that empower first-generation, STEM students at HSIs. It will share practical resources for building partnerships and designing programs suited for first-time travelers. Through panel discussions, participants will explore opportunities, challenges, and best practices for expanding global engagement and fostering the development of next-generation global citizens within HSI institutions. Attendees will hear from education abroad professionals who work with access initiatives and faculty-led programs, as well as a biomedical science faculty member who leads study abroad programs.

This session also includes an opportunity for the audience to participate in a brainstorming activity and discuss how they can engage with faculty-led global programs at their organizations.

The NEIU Center for Access and Student Success leads our Pre-College Global STEAM Engagement Initiatives. This program provides high school students in Chicago, Cicero, and Berwyn the opportunity to participate in free academic and cultural immersion experiences abroad. The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of Latino students who can access study abroad opportunities by removing financial barriers and fostering their academic growth in STEM fields.

In this panel presentation, an administrator, a faculty member, and an undergraduate student consider multidimensional perspective-taking and cultural humility as relevant to study abroad. Effective advocacy for such experiences requires multidimensional perspective-taking to understand diverse stakeholder priorities and cultural humility to listen, respect, and understand different experiences. Panelists apply a “glocal” lens, connecting global and local, as they discuss commitment to high-impact study abroad experiences in contexts where designated stakeholders might question or challenge such experiences. Presenters engage the audience in a simulated study abroad experience where attendees are provided roles and asked to take the perspectives of diverse others. Cultural humility is also explored and applied. The session concludes with prompts to apply a “glocal” lens to the experience and consider partnership implications.

Developing Global Competence through Intercultural Training and International Experience Mission East This presentation explores the professional competencies needed to succeed in today’s increasingly multicultural workplaces.

Drawing on research with Spanish and international students at Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain, the study examines the role of intercultural training and international experiences in shaping global competencies such as empathy, open-mindedness, and social initiative. Insights from nearly two decades coordinating and directing study abroad at Nebrija and leading Small Wide World intercultural training highlight innovative strategies to foster global talent. The session will be interactive, combining research findings with applied practice. Participants will engage in short reflective activities on intercultural skills, casebased scenarios from higher education and organizational training, and open dialogue on strategies to embed intercultural competence in curriculum and co-curricular programming.

This panel examines AI-enabled innovations from WGU Labs addressing these challenges: STU provides 24/7 student support, Lazuli enables accelerated, market-relevant curriculum development, and Current Skills Validation is building frameworks to recognize prior learning however it was gained. Panelists present three 20-minute case studies demonstrating AI applications in student support, curriculum design, and skills assessment. Discussions will explore problem statements, implementation and equity considerations, and institutional adaptation. Groups examine honest trade-offs: which human relationships may change, what efficiencies matter most, and where AI benefits and humans remain central.

Applied Sustainability for Everyone: High-impact Learning through Permaculture Mission West

Enhancing Confidence through Service-Learning Experiences in the Dominican Republic Mission East

PLACES (Permaculture Learning and Actions for Climate Education and Sustainability), a distance education plus two-way study abroad program between Colorado Mountain College and the University of Guadalajara, offers an example of permaculture-inspired, cross cultural student engagement. Permaculture is grounded in three ethics (earth care, people care, and fair share) and 12 practical application principles that create a platform for student learning and peer collaboration for change agency in diverse institutional settings. Presenters will offer overviews of the PLACES program and of permaculture as a design and practice framework for social-ecological change. Attendees will utilize a toolkit to plan permaculture-inspired academic and co-curricular engagement opportunities that develop students’ capacities as change agents through their direct engagement with challenges of our time.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), Office of International Affairs, coordinates annual student trips to the Dominican Republic, a region frequently impacted by natural disasters. Since 2019, CDU has partnered with the Light A Candle Foundation, a local faith-based organization, to provide mobile clinic services for migrant cane workers.

Survey results indicate that the students experienced meaningful growth in confidence, understanding of health issues, and cultural awareness by leading emergency preparedness trainings. A service-learning experience in the Dominican Republic increased the leadership capacity of an interdisciplinary team of 22 health science student travelers who provided emergency preparedness training to over 80 local leaders. The discussion of video footage, photography, and survey results will highlight the students’ efforts and unique learning outcomes.

Our findings and conclusions are scalable to other areas in addition to engineering.

High-Impact Summer Research Experiences Across Disciplines: Lessons from Marymount La Villita C Marymount University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), developed the Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) Program to broaden access to faculty-mentored research. Between 2021 and 2025, 455 students applied, 132 were selected, and 60 faculty served as mentors. Analysis of student surveys revealed perceived gains in research skills and increased participation among first-generation, Hispanic, and Black students. Structured mentorship, cohort-based workshops, and inclusion of undergraduate and graduate students provide scalable strategies for fostering research-engaged cultures at resource-limited HSIs. This interactive session highlights Marymount University’s Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) Program and five-year assessment, focusing on student research training, faculty mentorship, and interdisciplinary engagement.
