Habersham Electric Membership Corporation was chartered on July 25, 1938. The first 70 miles of line was energized May 15, 1939. Forming a cooperative was necessary as the investor-owned power suppliers didn’t believe it was profitable to build power lines to the farms and families spread out in rural areas.

A brief history

Cooperatives follow a unique business model, based on seven principles, which sets us apart from other businesses. Democratic member control

1 Voluntary and open membership

Ownership & Capital Credits

Anyone who receives electrical service from HEMC becomes a member of the cooperative, as we are owned by those we serve.

2 3 Member’s economic participation Autonomy & independence

4 5 Education, training & information Cooperation among cooperatives 6 7 Concern for community

As a not-for-profit cooperative, net margins (income minus expenses) are allocated to our members each year based on how much electricity each member purchased. The allocation is called capital credits.

Based on the financial condition, HEMC’s board of directors will retire (pay) the capital credits to our members.

HEMC has returned more than $19 million in capital credits to members.

REPORTING OUTAGES

Before you report an outage, ensure that the problem is not on your side of the electric meter by doing the following:

• First, check your electrical panel to make sure your breakers and/or fuses are in working order.

• Check for an exterior main breaker (common with manufactured homes).

• Check to see if your neighbors have power.

• For prepaid meters - please ensure that your account has been paid to at least a $10 credit

When you report the outage, have your HEMC account number and the phone number on your account handy. These can be found on your most recent electric billing statement.

ARE YOU ROUNDING UP?

Operation Round Up is a program that allows members to voluntarily participate by having their electric bill rounded up to the next dollar. Through these programs, financial assistance is provided to organizations and individuals in the HEMC service area.

If you are interested in rounding up, or applying for ORU funds, please visit our website at www.habershamemc.com under the “community” tab.

SAFETY FIRST

DO NOT attempt to touch or move a downed power line. Stay far away from power lines at all times and warn others to do the same. The ground around a downed power line and anything it touches may be conducting electricity and can cause serious injury or death if touched.
