More teams, more games, more action

There’s nothing quite like a season draw to ignite passion in anticipation of the season to come amongst the football community. More than other sporting codes, Football Federation Australia (FFA) has many factors to deal with when putting together a season draw. Obviously, each of the clubs has preferences and we know what fans prefer from market research undertaken at the end of the previous season but, in this most global of sports, we also have to take account of: » » » »

F IFA match dates Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup fixtures AFC Champions League fixtures, and potential participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

But that’s just to start. » T here’s also important considerations around player and match official welfare, including time of play during summer and travel schedules in a competition which is both national and trans-Tasman. » We also respect the fact that Australians love their sport and we try to keep a ‘clearway’ around important fixtures for other sporting events such as the AFL, NRL and cricket. » Then there’s venue availability – especially as more and more non-sport events are taking place in major stadiums. » Our host broadcaster and partner, FOX SPORTS, clearly has views and preferences which are important to all of us. » From FFA’s perspective, we look at what is in the best interests of the growth and development of the Hyundai A-League overall. » Finally, for the coming 2009/10 season, we have more fixtures to accommodate. I am certain every one who feels passionately about football is excited to have Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury join the Hyundai A-League. In 2009/10, we will see: » » » » » » »

hyundai a-league 2009/10 Season Draw

In addition, matches will be played in up to 16 different venues in 13 cities. Both Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix will play home games in three venues, while Central Coast Mariners and Perth will use two venues each. In Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners’ case, each of their venues is in different cities. The 2009/10 season will start slightly earlier than previously to allow for the additional rounds. We know that some media commentators and fans may not agree with this, but this was the preferred solution of FFA and the Hyundai A-League clubs when all of the factors detailed above were taken into account. The first match of the season will take place on a Thursday (6 August) between Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners, while newcomers North Queensland Fury host their first home game in Round 1 against Sydney. The other new club, Gold Coast United, host their first home game in Round 2 against North Queensland Fury. One complete round will take place midweek (Round 19). We look set for some fascinating match-ups. » H aving reached the Final of the AFC Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008, Adelaide United sets the benchmark » The F3 Derby continues between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle » Sydney and Melbourne meet on some marquee occasions » It’s Queenslander v Queenslander v Queenslander in what should become a new traditional three way tussle for Sunshine State supremacy between Roar, Gold Coast United and Fury, and » Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory endure the longest road trip in domestic competition in football worldwide each time they meet. Finally, we want to maximise both crowds and television audiences and the draw has been scheduled to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy games in peak times such as public holidays and over the festive season. I hope this booklet helps to explain the reasons behind the draw and demonstrates the transparency and equity that goes into constructing it. The preparation of the draw is one of the most anticipated and seminal tasks of the Hyundai A-League season, and I am confident that we have delivered for 2009/10 an outcome that is as equitable as possible and which will be welcomed and supported by the entire football community.

Ben Buckley Chief Executive Officer

Together WE LL LEVEL THE playing field No matter how little a child has, if they have their health, they have a shot at a future. Which is why Unicef Australia and Football Federation Australia are teaming up to create crucial sports-based community programs for underprivileged children whose lives are at risk from poverty, disease and violence in places such as Papua New Guinea, Iraq and even parts of Australia. And now we’re asking you to join the team. Please donate whatever you can at www.unicef.org.au
