5.3 Social Analysis

Accompanying with my main study question and related sub questions, I select my design site quite near the border line, and particularly, it is mainly a part of A76 highway and the landscape around it, between FigureBoholz 6-3 Planning model (the Netherlands) and Horbach (Germany).

Site Analysis Generally, I did site analysis from 3 perspectives: context of the site location, transportation, and land use. There are some advantages and weakpoints could be summerized from the analysis, which could be found from the right-hand figures.

III. Land Use

For the unconscious group, attractive tourism and new consuming activities could be taken as action; on the other hand, the over-cousicous group, they need communicating space to share and exchange information. Highway as the connection of urban and rural, Holland and German, can be used as ‘market’ and ‘living room’.

prefer sports activities in open space, they would like to visit some impressive, colorful and interesting artistic spots, which could immediately catch their eyes. •Young people, like me, prefer cycling or motor-cycling in nature, enjoying, breathing and touching nature. Group activities involving more interactions, theme tours assembling people with same interests (e.g. photographing, hiking etc, music festival) and adventures are expected.

For the unconscious group, tourism and consuming activities could be taken as actions; on the other hand, the over-cousicous group needs communicating space to exchange information. Highway as a connection of urban and rural, Holland and German, can be used as ‘market’ and ‘living room’.

•Middle age people like driving their own cars to certain places or walking in certain distance, like jogging, fast walking, or walking their dogs. During a trip, they would like to visit some historical architectures or monuments inheriting culture and local traditions. Beside, sometimes they will choose relaxing or educative journey routes to enjoy weekends with their family.

•Elderly people are of slow-speed life comparing to others, so are their choice about travelling. One of the most favorite route is right in rural. Shortdistance walking, natural sight views, etc. are appropriate for old class. For8 the mobile tool, public transport and pooling cars/bus are preferred. Reflecting to design, driving experience, diverse outdoor activities, enhance accessibility to rural nature, impressive artistic landmarks could be

The Concept Scheme Of Ecological Green Belt In “Qiantang" Riverfront, Haining, Phase I

1. Slow Traffic System 1.1 The current situation of Haining’s public bicycle system

1.4 Planning framework Currently Haining government is building its own public bicycle system, to complete its transportation system and relieving the traffic pressure. A slow traffic system will be established to connecting Haining and Hangzhou, by learning from Hangzhou’s successful mode.

Research on the environment of slow traffic system

Analysis on slow traffic demands

From 2012 to 2013, Haining plans to build 100 bicycle service network and over 3,000 public bicycles. Each two network will be 1,200m in average distance; other related facilities will also be built.

Haining older cycling competition

Cycling wedding ceremony in Haining

Resident trips forecast in slow traffic

1.3 The exiting problems and solutions of Haining’s current cycling traffic system.

Slow Traffic System Network Establishment 1 re-plan main road and secondary road, obligating cycling track in propose.

2 incomplete cycling pass through space

2 reduce access roads and reserving parking space in roadside.

3 none individual cycling parking facilities.

3 enhance connection of cycling and public transporting system.

4 lack of cycling traffic controlling system.

4 develop public bicycle rental business.

5 incompletion of the facility connecting cycling and public transporting system

5 build up cycling traffic demonstration area.

According to the spatial structure of Haining’s master plan, Haining will be divided into five parts based on their different characteristic and resource: closing to Hangzhou part in the west; small towns part in the middle; city central part in the east, ecological tourism part in south east and Qiantang riverside tourism area. The east part will be the main attraction of resident trip guidance. On the other hand, the riverside area and closing to Hangzhou area will be the primary zone for urban traffic flow. The expectation of resident slow traffic trip corridors is established by considered in city function distribution, current traffic roads network and different districts trip expectation. Both resident daily life trip expectation and tourism trip expectation are involved in this process. On the built public bicycle service spots in city center basis, I continued expanding the public bicycle service network to the whole area of Haining. By consideration of building costs and people flow rate, the new service spot will be located between 2.5km, satisfying different people’s trip expectation as far as possible, and covering the whole area of Haining.

Natural resource

Since the people in Haining have a traditional comfort lifestyle, and the unique tourist and cultural resource, cycling is gradually become the most popular transportation. The mass bases provide a favorable opportunity for Haining to develop the slow traffic system.

Based on the analysis of Haining’s current road situation and planning traffic system network, the transportation system in Haining presents a typical net distribution. The transporting accessibility is good. And most of downtown streets have the function of slow transportation except some suburban roads need add cycling tracks.

After the service spots are built up, connecting each of them by using the existing road having slow traffic facilities. The city level public bicycle service system will be established.

1. Slow Traffic System 1.7 “Qiantang” riverfront slow traffic system design and planning Comparing with the city level slow traffic system master plan and service network establishment, the design of slow traffic system in our study area should observe the controlling plan rules, including outdoor environment design suiting for slow traffic outdoor environment design, slow traffic flow line design and service spots design. The principle of open space design suiting the slow traffic Considering the location and unique resource, the function of slow traffic system in our design area should be defined as consisting of commuting and recreation. In order to encourage slow traffic trip, should be: 1 separating of pedestrian and vehicles, setting parking lots outside, rate-limiting and roadblocks.

Analysis of different activities and people Because of the area’s particularity, there are two different target groups the design principal should focus on: local residents and tourists. That is, the provided activities should be not only satisfied the demands of local people’s daily life but also consisted of cultural and tourism facilities and function. Furthermore, it is important to develop activities that having their unique feature instead of providing the activities that already planned in surroundings.

2 connecting the current traffic system, the plan of service spots should combine with village, landscape attraction and current road. 3 designing the system as continuing green network, raising the accessibility of open space. 4 locating the service spots with 500m for radius. The principle of slow traffic flow line design 1 The flow line for commuting: good road condition for riding, good connecting with surrounding roads, convenience riding and accessibility 2 The flow line for recreation: good environment and view condition, closing to the landscape attractions, providing good riding experience. The Principle of service spots design 1 Setting necessary renting and parking facilities combined with current roads and planning roads, providing thorough renting service. 2 Designing shops, toilets, sitting area and noticeboard by using open space such as square and park.

Road section design Transforming the existing motorway into mixed road, (mainly for commuting), adding 0.5m green belt. The new planning road will be mixed road in footpath and bicycle land (mainly for recreation).

3.Water System The process of rainwater collecting & purification Methodology: - Integrating the existing ditches

Selected aquatic plants

- Collecting the rainwater from the dam and pond by using the slope, storing it in the two existing fishponds. - Ecological cleansing the rainwater by planting specific aquatic plants, transporting the clean water into planned waterscape area by using another individual ditch to keep it clean. - Aquatic plant in the ditch can further filter and clean the rainwater, the clean water can be used to irrigate the cropland, reducing acorus calamus artificial water supply.

Rainwater Collecting

cyperus alternifolius

- If too much rainwater falls, the cleaned water in waterscape can be drained into river. Different ways of collecting rainwater: - Natural drainage: soil has high infiltration capacity; rainwater can hardly flow into ditch. willow herb

- Open trench collecting: in gentle ground, with existing ditches.

burlush

- Covered drain collecting: concentrated buildings, no existing ditches, steep ground. Conclusion: The site will be established a completed water source circulation & cleaning system. It will not only solve the water accumulation problem because of the shallow soil, but also creating better waterscape quality. scirpus tabernaemontani
