Canadian-Guyanese charities in coalition to advance Guyana’s healthcare A
silent auction hosted at the residence of Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana in Bel Air, Georgetown, Guyana, last Wednesday raised some Gy$3 million for the Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK) foundation. The fundraiser formed part of the agenda of the newly-formed Canada-Guyana Medical Partnerships Coalition (C-GMPC), an informal group of the numerous Canadian-Guyanese medical outreach groups working to identify and address healthcare needs in Guyana. The Coalition was set up last December by the High Commission of Canada with the support of Guyana’s Health Ministry and is intended to encourage collaboration that will explore and benefit from synergies among the different medical programmes, to ensure coordination and force maximisation of resources. One of the key features of the C-GMPC is an annual fundraiser to support the work of one of the partners in the Coalition. The silent auction last week was the first of its kind and aimed at raising funds for GHTK. GHTK, spearheaded by Canadian-Guyanese Dr Narendra Singh, aims to decrease neonatal and infant mortality in Guyana. In its initial phase, the charity supported the opening of a new neonatal intensive care unit and the development of a paediatric residency and neonatal nursing programme at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Guyana. Neonatal intensive care units have also been opened at the New Amsterdam and Linden regional hospitals. see full story on page 2
