The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2014“Service to Mankind” Recipient

Norman Orlowski, Jr. Mr. Norman Orlowski, President of Erie and Niagara Insurance, is the recipient of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2014 “Service to Mankind” Award. Norm was chosen for his leadership and dedication to advancing LLS’s mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, Hodgkin’s disease, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Active in the organization since 2002 when he was recruited by his brotherin-law Mike Faso, he began his volunteer work by serving on the Golf Committee. He went on the Chair the Golf Committee for several years, then expanded into other areas of leadership. He served as our Chapter President from 2008-2010, leading our Board and helping develop metrics and systems to evaluate our progress. From 2010-2012, he was a member of our National Board of Representatives, chosen to assist with special projects and committees. Locally, he continues to be a leader, Chairing the Gelatin Splash and serving on the Executive, Board Development, Strategic Planning, Light the Night, and Diamond Ball Committees, as well as assisting wherever needed. After participating in all of our other events, Norm decided to take a big step and take on the challenge of Team in Training. He raised almost twice his goal, and trained to ride 100 miles in Lake George. Norm is a great volunteer who is truly committed to the well being of our patients. He always provides support whole-heartedly to help advance our mission by raising funds and encouraging others to join in his support. In the past 12 years, Norm filled many leadership roles and received some well-deserved recognition, including “Rookie of the Year” in 2006, “Behind the Scenes Coordinator” in 2007 and 2008, and the Myron L. Woldman “Volunteer of the Year” Award in 2009. Under his leadership and through his personal fundraising efforts, close to a half million dollars was raised to help eradicate blood cancer. Norm resides in Clarence, with his wife, Paula Orlowski. Past recipients of this most prestigious local award are Lois Cropp, RN, Dennis Dintino, Michael Faso, John Rodgers, Paul Nanula, Michael Cropp, MD, William Huntress, Martin Brecher, MD, Jack Quinn, Gerard Mazurkiewicz, Marsha Henderson, Richard Penfold, Richard Ryan, Ralph Macey, Jr., Jacquie Walker, Larry Castellani, Roy Lever, Patrick Lee, the late Bernard Kennedy, the late Reverend James Demske, the late Robert Rich, Sr., Jim Kelly, Frank Ciminelli, and the late Seymour Knox, III. The Western & Central New York Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is proud to honor Norm Orlowski for his dedication in making a difference in the lives of local blood cancer patients & their families and for his service to our community with this year’s “Service to Mankind” award.

Lee Greenberger, PhD

Chief Scientific Officer Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, National Office

Lee Greenberger, Ph.D. is Chief Scientific Officer of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He is responsible for planning and executing the strategy for all LLS research programs, including grant funding programs, the Therapy Acceleration Program (TAP), as well as other research initiatives. Dr. Greenberger guides LLS’s efforts to translate innovative research into clinical trials that ultimately will pave the way for new therapies to treat blood cancers. Most recently, Greenberger was global head of search and diligence for oncology and immunology at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he examined opportunities for over 200 oncology companies and helped set the business strategy for oncology and immunology. Prior to that, he served for six years as vice president for research at Enzon Pharmaceuticals where he was responsible for pre-clinical pharmacology, toxicology, process development, and analytical chemistry efforts associated with the discovery and development of oncology assets. Prior to Enzon, Lee held positions of increasing responsibility in the research organizations of Johnson & Johnson and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, where he began his industry career in 1990 at American Cyanamid/Lederle Laboratories, which was later acquired by Wyeth. He was given the President’s Award for his work at Wyeth. Dr. Greenberger holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. from Emory University. He has done post-doctoral work at Columbia University and was on faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Greenberger has published more than 85 publications, mostly focused on oncology, during his research career.

Mistress of Ceremonies Jacquie Walker

Jacquie Walker is celebrating her 31st year as news anchor at WIVB-TV Channel 4… the only woman in Buffalo broadcasting who has celebrated this milestone at one television station. She anchors News 4 at 5 & 6 and the #1 rated News 4 at 11 p.m. For her outstanding career, Jacquie was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2011. The Buffalo Excellence in Media Awards selected her as ‘Television Personality of the Year’ in 2012. Recently, Buffalo Business First has named Jacquie among the most influential people in WNY. Jacquie has been a dedicated volunteer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for decades. She served as a longtime co-host of the Leukemia Televent and says she has had the true pleasure of watching many of the young patients who appeared on those early telethons grow up to become healthy young adults. It’s a testament to how your donations for blood cancer research are saving lives. Almost from the beginning, Jacquie has been emcee of our annual Diamond Ball. In 1999, her dedication to the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma was honored with the prestigious Service to Mankind Award. Jacquie truly believes in serving others through community volunteerism. She has received major awards from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Kevin Guest House, Rotary Club, National Conference for Community and Justice and other charitable organizations. For the past 5 years, the Buffalo chapter of the American Association of University Women has presented a $5,000 scholarship in Jacquie’s honor to a local college student. Jacquie’s work has been recognized with dozens of journalism awards, fourteen Emmy nominations, and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Communications. She is proud to be on the News 4 team that earned two National Edward R. Murrow Awards for coverage of the tragic crash of Flight 3407 in 2009. In 2012, she anchored live coverage from Canada as Nik Wallenda completed his historic wirewalk over Niagara Falls. Jacquie’s husband, Mike Beato, is an internet and technology consultant. They are the proud parents of two young men: a graduate student at the University at Buffalo, and an attorney with the Washington, D.C. law firm, Wiley Rein. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society extends a heartfelt thank you to Jacquie for her dedication and commitment to our mission of a CURE for leukemia, lymphoma, and the blood cancers. We are honored to have Jacquie serve as our Mistress of Ceremonies for our 22nd Annual Diamond Ball!

In Memory of Bob Koop

November 4, 1947 - January 1, 1995 In Special Tribute to the fond memory of a brave leader who truly believed in, and had a clear vision of, our goal of finding a CURE for leukemia, lymphoma and blood cancers. Bob Koop, who came to Channel 4 as a news anchorman in 1981, truly exemplified the meaning of a dedicated journalist. Colorful on and off the air, he was known for his knowledgeable, caring and professional manner. The impact of his tough battle with leukemia and his generosity in helping others will always be remembered by the Western New York community. The memory of his courageous fight will live on through the dedication of our volunteers, staff and especially our patients as we continue to fight to find a CURE.

Extend your passion for sailing to the race for cancer cures!

Leukemia Cup Regatta Saturday, August 2, 2014 Buffalo Yacht Club Raise a Sail, Save a Life! The 1st Buffalo Leukemia Cup Regatta sets sail from the Buffalo Yacht Club on August 2, 2014. This event combines the joy of sailing with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. The Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised millions of dollars for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families. Leukemia is the number-one disease killer of children. However, it affects ten times as many adults. The good news is that the cure rates have increased dramatically over the past 30 years. With your support, we could see the end of leukemia and lymphoma within our lifetime! These statistics are why we welcome this incredible opportunity to help others who are fighting these diseases. The Leukemia Cup Regatta is more than boats and crews racing. It is sailors in 40 Regattas across the United States who have elevated their competition to a whole new level. Locally, it is a community of yachting enthusiasts coming together to help fight leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers, through a day of fun events: sailing, silent auction, food, music and more!

For more information please call our chapter office at 716.834.2578 or 800.784.2368 or e-mail:

Please encourage your child’s school to participate in one of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth programs and help fight blood cancers!

Pennies for Patients & Pasta for Pennies March, April & May, 2014

MAKE CHANGE…BEAT CANCER! Students in participating

schools will collect their pennies, spare change and currency for 3 - 4 weeks to fight blood cancers. Schools participate in honor of a local patient, or Honored Hero. These heroes inspire students and help them understand that they can make a difference in our community. LLS will provide all the materials need to run the campaign. In Pennies for Patients, schools can win a gift card for a celebration party for their top fundraising classroom. In Olive Garden’s Pasta for Pennies, the top classroom will win a Hospitaliano! Lunch (based on location). Top fundraising schools and higher level fundraising schools will also win gift cards to be used to benefit the school.

HOP for Leukemia & Lymphoma March, April, or May, 2014 HOP FOR CHANGE…BEAT CANCER! Hop for Leukemia & Lymphoma

is a philanthropy and fitness program that gives students a unique experience in making a difference in the lives of thousands of children and adults living with blood cancers.

A “hop” can take place on any date during March, April or May. Many schools choose to tie in the HOP program with Easter or Spring and make it a “Bunny HOP”. Students ask family and friends to make donations for as many “hops” as they aim to complete in a two-minute time period. On the day of the “hop,” students or teachers record their total number of “hops.” LLS will provide all the materials need to run the campaign. Schools can qualify for prizes based on their overall fundraising level. HOW TO REGISTER FOR A SCHOOL & YOUTH PROGRAM: Visit Call 800.784.2368 or 716.834.2578 E-mail

What is the Light The Night Walk?

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) international evening fundraising walk to celebrate & commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants carry illuminated balloons along the walk course – red for supporters, white for cancer patients & survivors, and a special gold balloon for those who walk in memory of a loved one. Participants can become Team Captains by forming teams of friends, family, co-workers, etc. Each walker is asked to raise funds to help fight blood cancers. These funds are spent locally on blood cancer research and local patient aid & services.

Why Walk?

It’s fun! It’s inspirational! More than a walk, the evening is a celebration that includes music, food, a prize wheel, Chinese auction and other family activities. And you’ll be helping hundreds of thousands of Americans battling leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.

Please join us in 2014!

Teams and walkers can sign up now! Committee members are also needed, and sponsorship opportunities are currently available. Please call our Chapter Office at 716.834.2578 or 800.784.2368, e-mail or visit to sign up or for more information.

Funds raised from Light The Night will help advance our mission to CURE leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
