Donald Allen and Phyllis Powell Allen knew one month after they met in a New York casino that someday they’d be married. They met through a mutual friend who couldn’t wait to get them together. “She was like, ‘Y’all are perfect for each other,’” Phyllis said. Their relationship might have started through that friend seven years ago, but it was all about Donald and Phyllis as they clasped hands and exchanged vows at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center on Tuesday morning. The couple hadn’t yet told friends and family they were tying the knot. They could have a separate ceremony for loved ones later. This wedding was just for them. “It’s been a long time coming,” Phyllis said. Phyllis and Donald were among more than 100 couples who signed up for the special Valentine’s Day wedding and vow renewal ceremonies at GJAC from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. Countless more spontaneous couples popped in to get married as walkins. Chief Magistrate Court Judge Kristina Blum and Probate Court Judge Christopher Ballar hosted the event. Blum and Ballar, along with a few other probate and magistrate judges, dedicated their whole day and three different courtrooms to the wedding ceremonies. “We love having special events like this, particularly on days we don’t have normal court hearings scheduled,” Blum said. “It gives us the opportunity to do something wonderful.”

Ballar, Blum and the other judges performed ceremonies in Spanish whenever requested. They commented on the brides’ attire and calmed grooms’ nerves. Blum made sure to tell some couples that she’d signed their wedding certificate the moment they’d sealed their vows with a kiss. Judge John Ireland even allowed the large

The meeting with the NAACP had been billed as an opportunity for the group’s members to ask him questions. Some attendees said the chapter’s membership was never asked if it wanted to hear from Hunter and ended up calling for local NAACP President Marlyn Tillman’s resignation as well as Hunter’s.

They got into it. Judge Ruth McMullen donned red, heartshaped glasses as she married couples. Ballar stood in a room decked out with flowers, and Blum offered small doses of her own personal wisdom about married life. “I’ve been married 23 years,” she said to Donald and Phyllis as they prepared to exchange rings. “Whenever I’m having a bad day, I look at my wedding ring and think,
