deny the cemetery request. A unique aspect of this past week’s argument was the impact Official Code of Georgia Annotated Section 10-14-10 might have on the decision. The code section requires cemeteries be at least 10 acres in size — twice as large as the Afghan proposal, deputy county attorney Van Stephens told commissioners.

The attorney said that limit only applies in most cases, though. “Provided in the same chapter of the code, cemetery is defined and it has certain exceptions,” Stephens said. “The exceptions include governmentowned cemeteries, fraternal cemeteries, cemeteries owned and operated by churches, synagogues or

communities, or family burial plots. “So certain cemeteries are excluded from the provision for the 10-acre minimum. The question would be whether this particular cemetery falls within any of those exceptions, but for the board and the applicant, there is this provision of state law that must be complied with.”

This week’s vote was the second time in a month and a half that the commission dealt with a cemetery request from a group with either ties to the Middle East or the Islamic religion. The Community of Bosniaks Georgia also requested permission to build a cemetery this fall,

Duluth youth Eniyah Vasser was determined to figure out what was in the present she received at Overcomers House’s Christmas dinner and gift giveaway in Snellville on Saturday. One way or another — short of ripping the festive wrapping paper off the long, slim box — the 6-year-old was going to find a clue. Volunteers smiled and giggled as they watched her try various methods of detecting what she was getting for Christmas. “Are you trying to see if you can smell it now?” one volunteer asked in amazement. The little girl simply replied, “Yes.” Scenes of children expressing joy and enthusiasm at

The kids had extra reason to be happy about the presents, though. These kids are members of low-income families where it’s not always a sure thing that presents will be sitting under a Christmas tree on the morning of Dec. 25. And their parents appreciate the help in making Christmas happen as well. “I’m a single mom raising Overcomers House volunteer Greg Crocker hands a bicycle to five kids, and it’s hard to make Morrow youth Jadauris Lewis during the group’s Christmas tur- sure they each get something, key and gift giveaway at the old New Bethel AME Church buildso it’s good that we don’t have ing in Snellville on Saturday. to worry about them feeling left receiving Christmas presents Highway. Children receiving assistance from Rainbow Village in Duluth will enjoy a very athletic Christmas this year, after students from Forsyth County played Santa Claus on Friday. The students delivered 175 brand new pieces of gear to Rainbow Village’s community center after their last day of school before the Christmas break. “I feel like everyone should have something to open on Christmas morning,” Kenney said. The haul of gifts, which includes footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, helmets, hockey sticks and pucks, will be distributed to kids at Rainbow Village, whose property includes the community center and housing units for families. The size of the donation also means each child will find a few items under their Christmas tree this year. Rainbow Village is a program that helps homeless families get on their feet and has housing for about 18
