isabel.hughes @gwinnettdailypost.com

The body of a man found in a Loganville lake three weeks ago has been identified as a missing University of Georgia graduate who was last seen leaving work on July 16. Gwinnett police con-

firmed Wednesday that DNA from 25-yearold Alvin Ahmed’s famAlvin Ahmed ily identified the man as Ahmed, a pharmacy intern who was reported missing after his

car was found at the Publix grocery store on Atlanta Highway in Loganville with groceries still inside. Surveillance video from the day Ahmed went missing shows him buying the groceries before he left work around 9:15 p.m. and left the store. At 10:06 p.m., a man matching Ahmed’s descrip-

tion was seen on a security camera at Loganville’s Atmosphere Bar and Grill walking alone, said Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department. Shortly thereafter, Pihera

said, Ahmed’s phone stopped communicating with the cellphone tower covering the area at the same time, “indicating it had been turned off.” At 10:30 p.m., a person matching Ahmed’s description was seen on a security camera at a private residence on Lake Carlton Road walking alone toward the lake,

Pihera said. Ahmed’s body was recovered two days later after a person called 911 to say they had noticed “something floating in the water.” Late last month, the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Ahmed’s death a suicide,

When 14-year-old Colin Ganley walked into Duluth High School on Monday morning, it was more than his first day of high school — it was the continuation of a legacy spanning more than 80 years. “I didn’t know that I was (the fourth generation to attend) until my mom told me one day when we were sitting on the porch,” Colin said. “I thought I was only the third, but she told me that her grandparents graduated from here, too.” In a county that has exploded in population since its humble start 200 years ago as a small farming community, the Summerour family — Colin’s mother’s maiden name — has remained in Duluth. Lower School principal Cayce Waters said the addition of the Lower School being next to the Upper School campus is a huge development for the school in the future. “We’ve been looking forward to what

Francoeur hosts home run derby to raise money for charity BY TAYLOR DENMAN

SMYRNA — East Hall High School student Luke England remembers playing as Jeff Francoeur as an Atlanta Braves right fielder in the video game MLB 2K9. The 15-year-old cancer survivor, donning a brand-new Mississippi Braves hat on his shaved head, met the man in person

Thursday morning at SunTrust Park. Francoeur, the Parkview High graduate and current Atlanta Braves broadcaster, hosted an inaugural home run derby in support of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to raise money for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. Patients and donors took their batting stances under the cage at SunTrust Park and tried to launch baseballs over the approximately 250-foot barricades set up in the outfield.

England, who started playing T-ball when he was 3 years old, said his goal was to hit one out. He cleared three over the fence. “I never would have thought I’d have been able to hit down here,” he said. “I’ve always come to the games and thought, ‘Wow.’ I also love what’s happening here, raising money for childhood cancer.” Francoeur delivered half of See FRANCOEUR, Page 7A
