Spirit Program Fall Review Colonials Invasion 2010 Colonials Invasion rocked the house during Colonials Weekend 2010! This year the event took place on Friday, October 15th, in front of students, parents, alumni and University faculty and staff. The event was complete with performances from the GW Cheer & Dance Teams, the Mascots, Colonial Brass, Capital Funk and the Men and Women’s Basketball Teams. Check out videos from the event on www.youtube.com/GWFanVideos.

Dance Team Nationals On January 15th and 16th, the First Ladies participated in the 2011 Universal Dance Association College National Championship. The team ranked 11th in the nation in Division 1! The competition took place at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida at the Wide World of Sports complex, and the team worked tirelessly in preparation for its eleventh year of competitive dance. Congratulations First Ladies.
Fundraising overview JUNIOR COLONIALS The Spirit Program’s Junior Colonials fundraiser is coming up on February 12. Children will work with the Cheer and Dance Team members to learn fun dance routines, cheer moves and meet the Mascots! Participants will then perform during halftime at the women’s basketball game against UMass. It’s a great experience for children and Program members alike. To register, visit http://spirit.gwu.edu.
Back in September, the Spirit Teams went on their annual Retreat to YMCA Camp Letts in Annapolis, Maryland. They spent time getting to know each other through different games and activities. Since the majority of the Spirit Program consists of rookies, they also had the opportunity to learn about the history of the Program and discuss their goals for the upcoming season.
COLONIAL BELLHOP The Spirit Program held its annual Colonial Bellhop fundraiser during Fall Move-In this year. The Cheer Team, First Ladies Dance Team and Mascots, along with wonderful volunteers, helped move students into their GW Housing. The Spirit Program raised nearly $35,000 during Move-In week.
FUTURE COLONIALS During Colonials Weekend 2010, the Spirit Program hosts a fundraising event called Future Colonials. Parents had an opportunity to drop their younger children off to enjoy a night of bowling, billiards and games with the Spirit Teams while parents and students attended the Jimmy Fallon show.
Brittany Crosby I decided to try out for the Cheer Team because I cheered in high school and I always loved going to games. A lot of what the GW Cheer Team does is completely new to me, however the team is extremely talented and supportive. I feel like I’ve already learned so much from them! Colonials Invasion and the first few basketball games have been nerve-racking but exhilarating at the same time. We’ve all come so far in this short time already and I can’t wait to see how all of the different Spirit Program teams progress the rest of the year! Cheer – Freshman | Beachwood, Ohio
Peter Bott In high school I played football and became accustomed to being a part of a really close athletic family. I came to GW and seemed at a loss; No more lifting, practices and games meant there would be a huge void in my life next to schoolwork and socializing. Both physically and mentally, I needed another activity to occupy my time here at GW. In the summer if you would have asked me if I were going to be a cheerleader I would have scoffed at the idea. But after workout sessions, blood and sweat stained shirts, excellent performances, and becoming part of a new athletic family, I am proud to say I am a G-Dub cheerleader.

Lauren and Michelle have both been selected to be part of the 2011 Colonial Cabinet. As a part of Colonial Inauguration, these two lucky ladies will have a chance to welcome the freshman class of 2015 and distinguish themselves as leaders across campus. They were selected from a group of 200 applicants. Way to go Lauren and Michelle!

Melissa Keaney As a freshman, I was actually in the majority on this team of mostly rookies. Our season began with the Spirit Program Retreat; we left the hustle and bustle of Foggy Bottom and spent a weekend on a beautiful lake away from the city. It was the perfect beginning to what has been a great experience. With the commitment of all my teammates we were able to submit a great tape of our routine, and we were notified that we ranked 4th place and would be traveling to Nationals with a partial paid bid. As a team, we were proud of our accomplishment. We realized that it was our hard work that earned us the high ranking and this realization has continued to motivate us through each and every practice since. I had no idea what to expect when I first joined this amazing team, but I am now so happy and proud to call myself a GW First Lady. Dance – Freshman | Manchester, NH
