TAKE A SURVEY

AND WIN AN iPAD! The Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations have received a grant from the Province of British Columbia to do a Human Resources survey. We are hiring four community members to do the surveys (see posting in the job posting section) which have to be completed by March 25 so we can get the report in by March 31. The purpose of this survey is so that we can build a database of community members with information about your age, education, volunteer and work experience, interests, job readiness, etc. This information will be made available to staff who can help you get the training you need to get the career that you want. This project is a continuation of the “Hopes & Dreams” survey that was done in 1994. This survey will also help us target jobs to the people that can fill them. If you are between the ages of 15 and 65, and a member of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community (on or off reserve, status or non-status) you can get a $10 gift card for gas or groceries, and a chance to win an iPad, iPod touch, or other prizes.

For more information, call Jessie Hemphill at 949-8343, e-mail jessieh@gwanakplan.org or post a question on the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Facebook page.

From the Band Manager’s Desk:

I

t’s been very busy around the Band Office as we come close to March 31, the end of the fiscal year. Many projects and programs have to have reports in, funds spent, and budgets balanced by this date, so it means a lot of extra work for everyone! We have had a couple of Council meetings lately. We have discussed a lot of housing issues, which always seem to come to the Council table and take up a lot of our time. It is very complicated to try and accommodate everyone’s needs along with what we are able to do, so I appreciate your patience as we try to unravel our community’s housing situation. Last week we had a visit from John Henderson, from the Kwakiutl District Council. He was concerned about one of our community members who was illegally hunting elk locally, in the traditional territories of another first nation. We are very concerned about this, because not only is it disrespectful to that nation, it may prevent us from being allowed to hunt elk for our elders in the future. We will be dealing with this individual. If you want more information about the elk hunting policy, please go to http://www.gwanak.info/formembers/departments/natural-resources/elk-hunt on our band’s website. I am happy to announce a few new programs in the community. Gloria Walkus is our new Community-Based Collaborator (hired by the Sasamans Society) to help us do some planning around child welfare. Please take part in the meetings and interviews that Gloria will be arranging in the near future. We are also doing a Human Resources survey in the next few weeks. I am excited about using the results of this survey to help more community members get training and better jobs. I encourage you to participate in this survey. We are constantly working hard to deal with issues, from dogs to housing to medical issues to business opportunities to cultural revitalization and on and on. Please feel free to share your ideas and comments with me, and I thank you for your patience as we work to make our community the best it can be. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! - Les Taylor, Band Manager

Public Works Update Wa’kas Hall and Spring Clean-up... I no longer have keys to the janitor’s room or the microphone cabinet. Check with Les or Sue. I would like to apologize once again to the women who have to wash their hands in cold water. There are no funds available to replace the hot water tank in the women’s bathroom. Only one of the bingo committees pay rent to the band for when they have their bingo, which is only four times a month. I was asked by the band manager to store the gym mats under the stage. I did this whenever I had time from my other maintenance work. The mats may be purchased for $25.00 each, contact the band manager. SPRING CLEANUP: There is a spring cleanup scheduled for April 14 & 15. There are people who continue to throw garbage up at the old school site which we are trying to keep clean. If you have any applicances that need to be thrown out , please contact me at 250-230-0087 to help you get rid of them properly during work hours, 8-4 Monday - Friday. The chlorine level for this week is 0.70. Thanks, Bob

NEW FIRST NATIONS DENTIST IN CAMPBELL RIVER!

CitySmiles is now open for business...

H

ello Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxd’xw community members, my name is Ethel Henry (Henderson) and I am a Dental Hygienist as well as a new owner of a City Smiles Dental Centre and Dental Hygiene Inc. I am a Campbell River Band Member and daughter of Olie and Edwina Henderson. Dental Hygiene has been my career and passion for the last 17 years. I am current with modern up to date, comfortable techniques. It was a hard decision not to open on Reserve land. The main reason being that it would limit access to all people and only service Campbell River Band/KDC Health Members. This way I am available to all First Nations and Campbell River in general. At City Smiles, you will experience a cleaning like no other, there are no lectures and our main goal is to provide a service that is the best we can be. City Smiles is a full Dental Centre. Call 250.923.2060 to book an appointment, or find us at 2365 South Island Highway, Campbell River, BC, V9W 1C3. We do accept all insurances as well as status cards with no payment up front. My only request is that you do make your appointments as your time is valuable. Being a new business, I would appreciate everyone’s support by coming to see me. Sincerely, Ethel Henry
