My friend and I stopped in for lunch at Peppermints in Avon on Good Friday. We each ordered one of their awesome fish fries.

Imagine my surprise as I got up to pay for our meal when our server said our check was paid. We both were overwhelmed with the kindness! I don’t know if it was someone who knew us or a random stranger. Whomever it was, we were appreciative of the gesture, and as always, the fish fry was excellent!

Sky High Our village recently reassessed everyone. The average increase was 25%, raising all assessments by thousands. People are struggling with gas prices and food prices; now this? Seniors on fixed incomes will be forced out. If the leadership of our community does not intervene and lower the new assessments, we all need to stand together and vote them out.

Sirens Needed Our friend is a first responder/fireman. We have been with him on many occasions when the siren goes off, and he leaves in a flash.

Yes, there is an app on his phone that alerts of an incident. However, not every event is reported early enough to be sent out through the app, so first responders are notified via the siren. An incident doesn't just mean a fire. It could be a car accident (and someone must be removed with the Jaws of Life), child or animal locked in a hot car, an elderly person who has fallen and is unconscious- any number of things. These sirens let us know that our brave men and women are now aware that we need them.

Be relieved that this notification system exists. If anything happened to you or one of your loved ones, you would be grateful that a warning has gone out to all your local first responders. It could make a difference between life or death.

Stop when required!

To the selfish people who decide to blow stop signs and/or cut people off in such a hurry just to drag their butts to their destination while sightseeing: If you're in that much of a hurry to break the law while cutting others off, at least continue on and don't hold up traffic! Money can't buy common sense!

Good Neighbors!

On Tuesday, April 11th, we had appointments for our 2nd Covid boosters. Everything went fine at CVS in Avon. The pharmacist was excellent. Once we left, we walked to our car.

My husband, with his low blood sugar, got dizzy. I got him part-way into the front seat, and he couldn't move. Just then, a woman in a van pulled up, and she asked if she could help.

She had my husband put his arms around her, and she pulled him up and got him straight around. She was a nurse named Michelle from Caledonia: a true angel. Also, a young man came over to our car to see if we needed further assistance.

They were both wonderful and really helped us out. God bless!

Siren Rethink You're right. We are all grateful for first responders in our community, but you seem to think that the siren, which has been around for a long time, is affecting so many on the autism spectrum or with hearing aids? Is it really, or is it just bothering you? I'm a mother to an 8-year-old nonverbal boy, who I teach to understand all these sirens and loud noises as well as to understand their meanings. The sirens may not be necessary for those who receive the notifications to respond to such emergencies, but it's a general public notification each time to make sure your local fire department (if coming your way) has room. Also, not everyone is on their phones 24/7 (besides the fact the sirens remind me how important life is and how quickly it can go). So, that nice loud siren helps get those responders to the scene and or firehouse quicker. Maybe you should wear ear plugs and just be thank our community is still safe because of those "noise pollution sirens."

Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent, when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements.

Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true.

However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone.

Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look.

Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands.

Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish.

Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers.

Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward.

Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood.

This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions.

Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color.

Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time.

Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

Spray large sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place puff pastry sheet on pan.

With pastry brush, gently spread 1/2 tablespoon olive oil on pastry sheet. Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides.

Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. Sprinkle 2 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola over oranges. Sprinkle with salt, if desired, and basil.

Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on wire rack.

Coarsely chop beets. In large bowl, toss together remaining orange segments, salad greens and chopped beets. Drizzle with remaining olive oil; toss gently to combine.

Cut cooked galette into 12 pieces.

Top with beet salad. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and pecans.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words.

• Difficulty completing complex tasks.

• Challenges with planning and organization.

• Episodes of confusion and disorientation.

• Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party.

• Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations.

Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia.

The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia.

Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman, mostly healthy (apart from well-controlled high blood pressure). Looking at me, people assume I am skinny, but I have a well-concealed HUGE belly along with my thin arms and legs. I look like an olive stuck with toothpicks. My diet is healthy for the most part: I eat snack foods, deep-fried fast foods or sweets only rarely. I have read about how to eliminate belly fat, but there is so much contradictory info, each claiming to be the best.

What are truly effective ways to help eliminate belly fat? -- M.H. ANSWER: First, I would want to be sure what you have really is belly fat. While there are men (and a few women) who have that body shape due to fat, I have seen far too many cases of liver disease (where the abdominal cavity is filled with fluid due to high pressure in the liver) and ovarian cancer (where the abdomen is filled with fluid due to tumor). I would want to be sure you had been evaluated for these (and other) concerns, especially if this is a change in your normal body shape.

If it is abdominal fat, there is no magic diet. What works for someone else (even your twin sister, if you had one) might not work for you. For this reason, one single type of diet does not fit all. It may take patience and trying several different options before finding what works for you.

General advice includes avoiding the foods you noted you eat sparingly. Eat lots of vegetables and whole grains with fiber; modest amounts of fruits; several servings of nuts and fish weekly; and no more than modest amounts of meats.

Advice from an expert in weight management may be of great benefit. ***

Is it time to go through your pantry and look for any expired food items that might have been purchased over the past two years? You might be surprised. I sure was.

I’d been careful, with new items lined up behind old ones in my cabinets. The problem I just discovered, after picking up a load of curbside items, is the expiration dates of newer items aren’t necessarily better than items that have been in the cabinet for a while. They might be worse.

Why, I inquired of our store manager, was a box of crackers due to expire sooner than the box I bought two months ago? With a sigh, he admitted the problem: The warehouse is having a terrible time getting in anything. And managers have set up their own grocery swap with other nearby stores in the chain, basically bidding on items another store might have. “I’ll give you six boxes of crackers for six half-gallons of whole milk!”

Additionally, he said, he’s having a heck of a time getting trained people to work the night shift to stock the shelves correctly. Then, when the curbside pickup people race through the aisles to select items for each order, they grab from the front ... without looking at expiration dates.

Which is a long way of saying: Check your groceries. Either when you pick them up curbside and bring them home or when you take something out of your cabinets, look at the expiration dates and store them accordingly.

A helpful note in seeing those expiration dates at home: A black marker is very handy to write expiration dates on packages and cans that can be seen at a glance. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom.

The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals.

A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Pets Wearing Pants?

How About No! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I saw something on social media about a town in New York state that passed an ordinance requiring pets to “cover their genitals” by wearing pants. This is ridiculous!

Is it for real? -- Clark G. DEAR CLARK: It’s a wild idea, but no, the photo circulating on social media is fake. Pet owners, you can put away those doggy pants. (Unless your dog enjoys wearing them, of course.)

Officials with the city of Auburn, New York, were unpleasantly surprised to find their city’s letterhead going viral on social media just a couple of weeks ago. A fake letter said that residents’ pets would be required to wear pants outside so that their genitals would not be in view.

“It is an uncomfortable and difficult situation for a parent, grandparent or guardian to have to explain to their ward when they are questioned about canine and feline genitals,” the letter said.

It also claimed that many towns in New England have made pet pants mandatory -- also not true.

It’s probably no accident that the fake letter started circulating just before April Fool’s Day. And while it seems like a funny prank, the city of Auburn isn’t laughing.

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present.

While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter.

Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Phyllis A. Hickey April 13, 2022 Rochester: At age 92, Phyllis passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at the Village Green in LeRoy, NY. She was born in Rochester, NY to the late Stephen and M. Irene Hickey. Phyllis is predeceased by her brother, Stephen Hickey and her sister, Shiela (Maurice) Williams. Survived by her nieces.

John Ernest Bradley April 6, 2022 Born on September 29, 1941, in Rochester, New York.

Passed away on April 6, 2022, at Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, Florida.

He was raised in Geneseo, New York and attended Rochester Institute of Technology. He worked as an office manager and auto mechanic until he moved his family to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1973. In Florida, he worked at various jobs including service writer, insurance salesman, mechanic, and landlord. He was a very industrious worker who helped people with their car problems. He remodeled many houses and continued to be a keen and resourceful man as a landlord.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joanne Phillips Bradley and brother, Larry Bradley, both of Port Charlotte. Three daughters, Robin Bradley Rahman of Lakeland (Emir Rahman), Renee Bradley Clark of Powder Springs, GA ( Jeff Clark) and Rachel Bradley Keesling of Punta Gorda (Klint Keesling). 8 grandchildren, Craig (Olivia), Clark (Lexi) & Curtis (Heather) Rahman, Anna Avery and Ashlynn Clark, Kole and Kori Joy Keesling. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Bradley Sr., Anne Lamping Bradley and his sister, Joanne Bradley McEntee.

Springwater, NY: Rob passed on April 15, 2022 at age 60. He was born on May 1, 1961 in Canandaigua, NY to the late Robert W. Sr. and Barbara (Hendrickson) Hill. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna (Barber) Hill in 2021. Survived by his son, Dana Barber of Lakeville; granddaughter, Annalisa Victoria Rochelle Barber; siblings, Dawn Hill of FL, John Hill of FL, Tammy (Gary) Wilson of Conesus, and Jennifer Dow (Chris Rice) of Henrietta; also survived by many other loving family and friends.

Rob graduated from Livonia High School and lived in this area for all his life. He worked at Graver Technologies in Honeoye Falls for about 30 years, and was still presently working there. He was a very respected part of the Graver Technology family. He loved his family & friends with his whole heart. Although a soft-spoken man, Rob would do anything for anyone who asked. He enjoyed spending time in Kentucky every July for the family reunion. He and Donna made their home in the hills of Springwater, where he loved to visit with his granddaughter Annalisa and tinker on whatever he could with his son Dana. He loved the peaceful nature that surrounded his home. He enjoyed wing night at the Springwater Legion and loved watching NASCAR. Family and friends may call on Saturday, April 30th, from 2-4pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte. 15 & 20A, Livonia, where Rob’s Funeral Service will be held at 4pm, immediately following calling hours. Burial will follow at Arnold Cemetery, Conesus, NY. There will be a gathering for friends & family following the ceremony at the cemetery. Details will come the day of his services. Pat was known for letter writing in her perfect and unique handwriting. She valued the importance and connection of a handwritten letter. She remembered family and friends’ special occasions with personal notes. Thank you to those who participated in the Love Note shower arranged by her family. Marcia Ann Quinlan (Dougherty) April 18, 2022 Avon, NY: Marcia Ann (Dougherty) Quinlan, born April 26, 1939 and entered into eternal peace on April 18, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Kevin P. Quinlan in 2010; parents, Harold and Phyllis Dougherty; siblings, John, Jim, Mary Jane, and Karen; brother and sisters-in-law, Eileen, Paul, Jim, Noreen, Ann, and Susan.

Marcia is survived by her 4 children, Timothy (Deborah) Quinlan of Mumford, Kimberly Quinlan, Kathleen (Brett) Bennett, and Daniel (Christine) Quinlan, all of Avon. Her love and memory go on in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christopher Batzel (Sara Forsythe), Holly Batzel, Jessica Bennett (Doug Lynden), Courtney (Kevin) Hacker, Katelyn (Benjamin) Knickerbocker, Cody Bennett, Ashley Quinlan, Zachary Quinlan, Jason (Christine) Klein, and Lisa (Scott) Mielke, as well as her 10 great-grandchildren with the 11th one due this June. Also survived by brothers & sisters, many nieces, nephews, many dear friends, and her grand-kitty Ruari who kept a vigilant watch over her Grandma in her final days.

Marcia was a stay-at-home Mom while raising her four children.

In later years she was an in-home caregiver to people in the community of Avon. She enjoyed her beautiful flowers, animals she had throughout her life, long conversations on the phone catching up with family, family holidays, drives to Naples to go for lunch at Bob and Ruth’s, and to bring home a grape pie. She dearly missed her husband Kevin, and was ready to join him as well as others who passed before her and held a special place in her heart.

Our deepest gratitude to Livingston County Hospice, especially Brandi and Anna, for all the loving care shown not only to Marcia, but to our family as well. Thank you to Dr. Richard Aguirre and staff for always being there. The compassion and care for Marcia will never be forgotten.

A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Far from being biodegradable, these items commonly produce toxic e-waste at the end of their notoriously short life cycles, putting many at risk of exposure to over 1,000 harmful substances, including lead, mercury, nickel, brominated flame retardants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day. Reported to be the world’s largest secular observance, Earth Day is expected to mobilize over 1 billion people participating in more than 190 countries (there are approximately 195) around the globe. This incredible, green global phenomenon came from humble beginnings, and like many positive and powerful ideas, it was catalyzed by the written word.

In 1962, Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring took the world by storm as it was quickly published across 24 countries. Concern over the impact of pollution on the environment, living organisms, and public health grew exponentially, blossoming into the modern environmental movement. With a strong, grassroots presence in local colleges, those early environmental champions chose April 22nd, 1970, to be the first Earth Day in hopes of generating the greatest possible student participation between spring break and final exams. This first Earth Day served as a rallying cry.

“Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around [their] shared common values,” states EARTHDAY.ORG. But it wasn’t just environmental groups that united. People from all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political persuasions joined together to protect our precious planet. In short order, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was formed.

A host of protective environmental legislation soon followed, including such groundbreaking items as the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. This early legislation has done immeasurable good in protecting us and all species that call Earth home.

In the more than 50 years since it began, Earth Day has grown in scope and impact as awareness of environmental issues—as well as their importance—has skyrocketed worldwide. Today, over a billion people participate in environmentally focused activities each year, many taking advantage of increasing opportunities to volunteer around their communities and beyond.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day.

While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day.

1. Embrace organization tools.

Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations.

2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients.

3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. 4. Reconsider your commute.
