HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER Prepare yourself. Caregivers may be so busy looking into what they can do to help a loved one diagnosed with cancer that they overlook or forget the need to prepare themselves. The ASCO recommends that caregivers process their own feelings about a loved one’s diagnosis before they begin caring for that person. This can ensure their focus is where it needs to be when their loved needs help. In addition, caregivers can do everything to learn about their loved one’s disease ahead of time. Many patients are not forthcoming about their disease, and even those that are may find it physically and emotionally exhausting to repeatedly share the details of their disease with friends and family. Learning the basics on your own can save the patients from these feelings of exhaustion. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
How Much Popcorn Is Too Much?
$129
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I love popcorn, but when you look close there are so many hard hulls! Are they hard on the stomach? Can you eat too much? -- G.P.P. ANSWER: Popcorn has a lot of fiber, include the nondigestible bran of the kernel (also called the hull). Fiber is generally healthy for you, aiding in digestion and making you feel fuller, and foods high in fiber may reduce risk of some chronic diseases. However, too much fiber, especially if your system is not used to it, is absolutely a potential problem. It can cause bloating and gas, and in rare instances can cause an obstruction in the bowel. This is not likely with any reasonable amount of popcorn. Doctors used to think that in people with diverticulosis, which is little outpouchings in the wall of the colon, popcorn could cause diverticulitis (inflammation and infection). However, recent studies have shown this is unlikely. Finally, enjoy popcorn air-popped, without oil or butter or too much salt, for the healthiest option.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was recently worked up for an autoimmune disease that now seems to be osteoarthritis. I was placed on 10 mg of prednisone for 14 days with amazing relief from my painful shoulder and arms. I am severely allergic to aspirin and do not want to take opioids. The physician has ordered prednisone 2.5-5 mg daily to control symptoms. Is it safe to take this low dose of prednisone daily for pain control? -- M.O. ANSWER: It sounds to me that the physician may not have communicated as effectively as I might have hoped. Osteoarthritis, although a widespread cause of joint pain, is not an autoimmune disease, and it is not treated with prednisone. Instead, it sounds very much like you may have polymyalgia rheumatica. PMR is found in women more often than in men and rarely in people under 50, most commonly in a person’s 70s. Hallmark symptoms are joint pain, especially of the shoulders and upper arms, that is much worse in the morning. PMR also is very sensitive to prednisone 10-20 mg: If it doesn’t respond dramatically to those kinds of doses, it probably isn’t PMR. A laboratory finding, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, is almost always very elevated (92%-94%) in PMR. A different blood test for inflammation, C-reactive protein, is abnormal in 99% of people with the condition. Treatment is low-dose prednisone, usually given at 10-20 mg per day to start, as long as it is controlling symptoms. About half of people will be able to come off of medication after a year or two, but some people continue on treatment for six years or more. Unfortunately, even at these low doses, roughly half of people can develop a side effect due to the steroids, especially cataracts. People on long-term steroids should have careful monitoring of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as bone density. Alternate treatments that don’t rely on steroids are in development.

Audrey W. Marshall February 13, 2022 Bloomfield: At age 89, Audrey passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 13, 2022. Audrey is predeceased by her beloved husband of 68 years, Lewis “Bill” Marshall and her grandchildren, Ryan Marshall and Jennifer Hubble Marshall. Survived by her children, Dana (Donna) Marshall, Debbie (Danny) Shaw, Daryl (Ide) Marshall and Dawn (Kevin) Hass; her grandchildren, Kurt (Sharon), Katie (Chad), Meghan (Nick), Matt, Christina (Allen), Kari, Sean, George, Shannon ( Joe), Keith, and Samantha, along with her 17 great-grandchildren.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed.
Audrey was born in Allen’s Hill on October 29, 1932 to the late George Wright and Thelma Belcher Wright. Her family moved to Honeoye Falls, then back to Allen’s Hill, where her family had the Allen’s Hill General Store in the front of their home. Audrey attended a one room schoolhouse in Allen’s Hill, then went to Honeoye Central School where she graduated. Audrey went on to work for Star Headlight in Honeoye Falls for a few years. In February of 1954, she married Bill, the love of her life. They settled on Allen’s Hill where they raised their family of 4 children. Audrey also worked as the Cafeteria Manager at Honeoye Central School. She enjoyed celebrating and making the holidays special for all the students and facility. Audrey retired from the school cafeteria in 1995. She worked as a cook at a Girl Scout Camp and was affectionately known as “Sparky” by everyone there. After she was done working at the camp, she enjoyed the time with her family even more. Audrey loved making holidays very special for both her immediate and extended family of relatives and friends. She enjoyed playing bingo, baking, cooking, and playing cards. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with them all. Friends and family are invited to call from 4-7PM on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye, where Audrey’s funeral service will take place at 11AM on Saturday, February 19, 2022. Interment will immediately follow at Lakeview Cemetery, 5000 Co. Rd. 36 in Honeoye, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Fire Department, PO Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 229-2444
Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Manchester Gateway Trail Shout out to the Village of Manchester and their beautiful trail. The trail is well-maintained all year long and has been a joy for so many this winter season. Thank you for making the trail accessible, especially during the winter months. Even during the recent snow storms, I was able to take my dog for a walk in the woods because of your commitment. Thank you! Service to Drive for! I completely agree with last week's rave for the Valero Gas Station in Avon! The girls that work there are amazing, prompt, and courteous! I am elderly and drive out of my way for their service! Even on the bitterest of cold days, the girls there greet you with a smile! I always tip them, and would feel guilty if I didn't, because they deserve it. After all, they are pumping my fuel, and I have the luxury of sitting comfortably in my car! Good job!
Good Samaritan Award goes to... Roger King: Livingston County coroner, local funeral assistant, state DOT employee, volunteer fireman, husband, dad, and friend. Your attention to detail, your care for the living and deceased, your kind words, your nurturing and kind soul, your ability to act fast and take control of situations, your confidence in doing things, and your ability to do the right thing do not go unnoticed. You are a gentleman; a kind-hearted and empathetic Samaritan to whom most people reading this owe a great deal of thanks. Our communities are safer because of you; they are stronger because of you, and we all are indebted to you for playing an integral part in all of our lives. No amount of thanks could begin to repay you for the sacrifices you and your family make every single day. You are appreciated and respected. I hope you understand how invaluable and indispensable you are! -A grateful community Four Letter Words Not all four letter words are bad. In fact, "good" is a four letter word. The worst four letter word that I can think of is "hate." It is that four letter word which has caused wars: people killing children in churches, streets, and any other place you can think of. There is, however, another four letter word that can defeat the word "hate," and that is the word "love." The Greeks have at least three words for love, and the one I'm referring to is "agape," the concern for the well-being of others.
Blessed & Thankful A huge thank you to the driver of a white car who paid for coffee and a donut at Tim Horton's on February 10th. Not only did you give me a gift, but also the items were being taken to my mom at a nursing home, so your generosity reached two ladies. I will definitely pay it forward, and thank you for reminding me that there are good people in this world.
You should care! I cannot believe that there are some people out there who genuinely think that they shouldn’t care about the environment because it apparently “can’t be controlled.” It absolutely can! In March of 2020 when most of the world was in lockdown, pollution and emissions plummeted, then went back up when lockdown orders were lifted. The environment absolutely can be controlled and changed. Just look at the weather in recent years: tornadoes and 60°F weather in December, snow in May, Siberian temperatures in Chicago. None of that is natural! It’s very ignorant to assume that the planet we all live on isn’t worth caring about because there’s supposedly nothing you can do to take care of it. I’m not saying that the world is going to end if you don’t emulate Captain Planet levels of environmentalism, but at least trying to care about the Earth would be nice!

WASHINGTON INSPIRED PRESIDENTS’ DAY Established in 1800, Presidents’ Day once went by a different name. Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president.

From Webster to Africa & Beyond BY DP DUNN
R
ich Comins of Webster, NY, is a quiet man with salt and pepper hair and a twinkle in his eye. He has made friends and changed lives on every continent, except perhaps Antarctica. Rich is a small but mighty link in a chain of Rotarians that deliver ‘mobility devices’ all around the world. What’s a mobility device? Examples include crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, leg braces, baby joggers and strollers, bike strollers, and prosthetic limbs. Rich collects these items for distribution overseas, at no cost to the recipient, through an organization called Crutches 4 Africa, whose mission is to “Collect, ship and distribute mobility devices.” Now if you’ve visited Hegedorn’s Market in Webster, you might have noticed a large plastic barrel near the store’s main entrance. On that barrel is a sign “CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA.” Maybe you’ve seen a couple of pairs of crutches, or a walker or two in the bin, ready to travel. Here’s their story. The whole Crutches 4 Africa operation was started by David Talbot of Boulder, Colorado. Talbot endured polio as a child. He recovered, after surgery and much rehabilitation and exercise. Although he became an athlete in high school and college, he always remembered that painful illness. Dave traveled internationally, and as he traveled, he realized, as many travelers do, that Americans enjoyed so much. It’s scandalous what we throw away. Dave saw a need, especially in Africa, and took action to make a difference. Medical mobility equipment was, and continues to be, in great demand to improve the lives of so many people with temporary or lifelong disabilities as well as many victims of accidents or war or illness. In 2018, Rich Comins attended an International Rotary conference in Toronto. Rich and Talbot met, and a series of conversations ensued. The next thing you know, as Rich tells the story, “Phil Smith visited the Webster chapter and presented an informational program about Crutches 4 Africa. The Ontario and Walworth clubs had already begun because of the discussion between Mark Wyse and myself in Toronto. I later presented to the Greece Rotary where Bill & Helen Gormont joined in the cause.” All agreed this was a worthwhile project. They began collecting, storing, and shipping a wide array of mobility devices all around the world. In addition to the African continent, equipment has now been shipped to Mexico and Mongolia, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thailand, Guatemala, and even Christmas Island. Merry Christmas, Christmas Islanders!

When winter releases her icy grip, and shipping containers become available (right now, they’re at a premium), three containers worth are ready to go. “Hopefully we’ll make shipments this April, May, and June,” said Rich. Rich also passed along the following tips for those wishing to donate: 1. Don’t toss; DONATE, please! Your donation will change a life. Crutches 4 Africa helps children like 2. “Used but Usable” this young boy stay mobile! equipment only please; minor repairs are OK. 3. No electric scooters, please. The infrastructure elsewhere is not what we have at home. 4. Free pick up is available for larger donations of equipment. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Dealing With Empty Store Shelves There’s been a shift in food availability across the country. If your area is just now getting hit with empty store shelves, this concept is shocking and new to you. For those of us who have lived with this for a long time (for over a year in my area), it’s more of the same, but worse now. Here are a few thoughts to help you get through this. Ask your store manager about any missing item. If he says that he’s no longer able to order it, that likely means the item isn’t on the store’s list anymore. In that case, call the manufacturer. You might well discover that they’re no longer making that particular item. If, however, the reply is that he doesn’t know when certain stock will be arriving on a truck, at least there’s hope it will reappear. That’s when you need to be proactive. Team up with a few friends and equip each one with a list of a few must-have items for each person. For one it might be distilled water for a C-pap machine. For another it might be one certain brand of low-sugar canned fruit. Then, when you shop, keep an eye out for those items. If you spot something, make a call and ask if you should pick it up while it’s right there in front of you. If you’re desperate for a particular item you know is in stock, call the store manager and ask for it to be put it at the customer-service counter. If you don’t do this too often, chances are you’ll be accommodated. If your store finally gets a missing item back in stock, don’t hoard. At most, take just one extra if you’ll use it within several weeks. That will buy you a little time if it goes missing again. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults. · Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh. Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk. · Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head. · Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression. · Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help. · Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing. REAL ESTATE

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
More Tips for Finding Out-of-Stock Pet Food
House For Sale
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to respond to Casey H.’s concerns about finding the right pet food in the midst of these supply problems. We and some of our friends have experienced the same shortage. Our cat is on a prescription canned and dry food to treat her cystitis. Eating the wrong food could cause real problems for her. When we went to PetSmart to renew our supply, the shelf was almost empty. We talked to the in-store veterinarian, who said the main problem was a quality issue -the manufacturer had to throw away a huge amount of cat food and start again. That, plus the slowdown in truck deliveries, plus short staffing, are all contributing to this mess. Casey may want to call or email the pet-food company, or talk to the manager of the store that it’s usually purchased from. Another option is to make your own pet food. My mother was a dog breeder for 30 years and she made her own dog food. It’s not an option for us because of our cat’s medical issue, but it may be a solution for others. Your veterinarian can guide you on ingredients, and there are plenty of books with recipes that provide balanced nutrition. -- Colleen R., East Rochester, New York DEAR COLLEEN: That’s great advice! Store managers and the pet food manufacturers themselves can provide more insight when a specific pet food is not available. You can usually find contact information for the manufacturer on the can, bag or box of pet food. Veterinarians also can also help guide you to alternative pet foods, which is especially important when specific formulations are needed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. FACTS ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON Few Americans would be hard pressed to identify George Washington’s visage, which is depicted on some American currency, including the $1 bill. Born in 1732 to Virginia planters, Washington’s interests included western expansion, which he was able to take part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoah lands at the age of 16. Washington was also interested in military arts, and he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, eventually playing a role in what became the French and Indian War. In 1759, Washington was serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of elected representatives of the English colonies in North America. Growing frustrated with and feeling exploited by British regulations, Washington voiced his resistance to restrictions placed on colonists, who were moving toward what would become the American Revolution. At the Second Continental Congress, which assembled in 1775, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, taking command of troops at Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 3, 1775. Under Washington’s command, the Continental Army would ultimately succeed, winning the colonists their independence from British rule. In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where the new Constitution was ratified. Within two years Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. Though the current two-term limit was not law at the end of Washington’s second term, he chose to retire from the Presidency anyway, leaving office in 1797. He would retire to his Virginia home at Mount Vernon, where he still engaged in various business dealings. Within three years of his retirement, however, Washington would fall ill of a throat infection that ultimately took his life on December 14, 1799. In addition to providing the inspiration for Presidents’ Day, Washington’s legacy is that of a hero who led an army of colonists to a victory over a dominant empire. The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore are two of the more notable monuments honoring the first President of the United States. In addition, the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. is so named in honor of George Washington.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Several Positions are Now Available
* Store plastic wrap in the refrigerator, or even the freezer, to keep it from sticking to itself.
• Pumper Truck Operator: Class B CDL license required • System Installer/Equipment Operator: Class A CDL license required • Helper: Clean standard NYS driver’s license required
* “Take your medication tablets on a spoonful of your favorite yogurt! Place the pills on top of yogurt and they slide down. Follow with a second spoonful and smile.” -- A Reader in Pennsylvania
Barefoot Septic & Sewer Inc. Phone: 538-4886 • Cell: 303-7247 • Fax: 538-4408 Email: scott@barefootseptic.com 2920 Telephone Rd., Caledonia, NY 14423
* Do you have a screw loose ... in your eyeglasses? This is an easy fix. Paint the screw with a dab of clear nail polish and quickly re-screw. It works like glue. Dab the top of the screw for a little extra insurance. * “I purchased a roll of reflective tape to mark our basement stairs. It reflects the light from the open doorway at the top of the stairs, and I can turn the downstairs lights off before heading up. I had some left over, so I put a strip on my dog’s collar. When I let him out at night, I can shine a flashlight and spot him instantly, since the tape is more visible in the night.” -- V.R. in Pennsylvania * If you’re leaving your home for a few days, make sure you don’t turn off the heater altogether. Set it at a low 55 degrees F and open up the cabinets that have pipes exposed. This way, air will circulate, and it won’t get too cold to allow the pipes to burst. Have a neighbor turn your faucets to a trickle if below-freezing weather is expected. * Wrap the metal collar of your paintbrush with masking tape before painting. Then you can peel it off and there’s no stuck-on paint. EMPLOYMENT
