Dig out that bikini and factor 15- there’s a whole world of sunshine just a few hours away. Blush gets the lowdown on the best jetlag-free winter breaks. Winter holidays - escape to the sun and beat the crowds Freezing temperatures of a typical British winter set us craving the summer holidays. That’s why so many of us are now opting for winter holidays in the sun. Within a matter of hours you can be reclining on a lounger, slapping on the sun cream, and gazing out at life-affirming, sparkling blue seas. Benefits of taking your holidays in mid winter, include securing excellent rates on package deals, avoiding the peak tourist rush in resorts that are often experienced in the summer months, and finding out-of-season travel far easier for you and the family. For families with young children, and perhaps older holiday travellers, hitting the beaches when the sun is soothing, rather than scorching, is another factor that recommends winter holidays.
GOZO, MALTA With winter temperatures hovering around 70 ̊C, Gozo is a great choice for anyone seeking mild- as opposed to blistering- winter sun. with its virtually untouched surroundings, secluded swimming holes and serious history (its megalithic temples date back to 3500BC) this little island off the coast of Malta is set to become the new Mallorca. Not yet, though. Gozo, with its hill-top villages, fresh local cuisine (today’s bass and Mediterranean vegetables) and dramatic cliff faces, is a serene nirvana. Diving is the thing to do but you could also take the five-star pampering option at the Kempinski San Larenz. Built in local yellow limestone, the hotel is surrounded by subtropical gardens and swimming pools, and the rooms are decorated in cool Mediterranean colours with stone floors. The Trattoria San Lawrenz, with its dreamy outside sitting area, serves delicious Italian and Maltese cuisine, or for more special occasions, there’s the more formal L’Ortolan. The hotel’s brand new spa has all the hottest stress-busting treatments
including stone therapy and algae wraps, while an Ayurvedic centre offers authentic therapies from doctors trained in India. WHERE TO STAY: The Kepinski San Lawrenz. A four-night b&b break in a Deluxe Pool View Room in January or February, including return flights from Gatwick with Air Malta, transfers and a one-hour Abhyangam Massage per person, costs from £468 per person, based on two people sharing. Single supplements on request. WHO TO CALL? La Joie de Vivre on (01483) 272379; lajoiedevivre.co.uk.
DUBAI A seven-hour flight is probably the longest distance that can qualify for short-haul, but once you’ve arrived, you’ll barely have to remember your name. Dubai has carved one of the world’s most popular The shopping is fantastic, especially if you like gold, diamonds and designer goodies (Arabic style is hardly subtle), and there’s little in the way of sightseeing guilt. If you really must, you can whiz around the old town and Dubai Museum in about two tourist destinations (4.5 million visitors and counting)
out of a little more than desert, and hotels here have taken luxury and pampering to new levels. A seven-star hotel where a sunglasses butler will clean your shades poolside? No problem. A spa with a mud wrap infused with crushed diamonds? Why not? And by next year visitors will be able to stay on palm tree-shaped, artifical islands that can be seen from space. hours, leaving plenty of time to hit the souks, surf the dunes (really) or swim in the crystal-blue waters. And with summer temperatures soaring well into the hundreds, winter provides the perfect nottoo-hot climate. WHERE TO STAY: The Jemeirah Mina A’ Salam is the first phase of a mega new resort built in the style of old Dubai. It features fantastic themed restaurants, one of Dubai’s best beaches and, later this year, the first Six Senses Spa to open outside Asia. WHO TO CALL? Airline Network (0870 234 9913; airlinenetwork.co.uk) offers five nights b&b at the Jumeirah Mina A’ Salam, including flights with Emirates, from £949 per person.
