PRESIDENT ALI PRESSES REGIONAL LEADERS TO HELP SLASH FOOD BILL BY 2025

While President Mohammed Irfaan Ali has embarked on the mission along with the other CARICOM countries to have the food import bill reduced by 25% by 2025, the President is insisting that the goal will not be attainable unless leaders work hard by implementing the right system.

President Ali was at the time speaking at the launching of the Agriculture Investment Forum and Expo 2022 which is slated to begin on May 19 and end on May 21 under the theme “Investment in vision 25 by 2025”.

The Forum and Expo were birthed out of a proposal by President Ali at the 33rd InterSessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Belize

just a few weeks ago.

With the aim of reducing the food import bill, investment projects from the region are going to be proposed with the aim of being financed, the partnership is set to be built and most importantly, the planning amongst each other on how their contribution will help in the reduction.

To push an initiative, however, President Ali pointed toward the need for Government and the Private Sector to support the initiative, or according to him what could be a reality will not happen.

“Political leadership is key and critical.

This can’t be led by the technicians; this has to be led through a political commitment through political will.

Not only by Government but by all the political stakeholders.

The

Political apparatus of the region must see this as an essential responsibility and embrace it moving forward, so, that the political system and the political changes would never be able to change the vision because the regional political apparatus will be behind this totality.”

President Ali added that the leadership that is also needed must also come from the private sector of each region to drive the project.

“We cannot do this without the private sector; we cannot do this without each other. The region must understand that we are all partners in it. We can’t restrict each other; we can’t be barriers to each other for it to be successful we have to facilitate each other we must have a win, win scenario” This comment comes

at a time when several leaders have complained about the hurdles in even the region that would have hampered trade.

This statement came also at a time when the COVID-19 Pandemic and the war in Ukraine saw a high cost of living. He said out of those realities come opportunities for us to

grow.

“In this reality lie opportunities and one of the opportunities for us in this region is to go back to fundamentally what brought us here.

Whether our ancestors came as slaves or indentured laborers they all toiled in the field.

That is the foundation principle of what makes

us Caribbean people.

Over the years we have divested ourselves from this, we have been forced out in some instances because of climate change and national disasters and then we have simply been lackadaisical in some instances, we did not provide the political will is required.”

The President pointed out that now more than ever we should learn from the past and support initiatives such as these.

“For the country to have not appointed a Chancellor for 17 long years is very disappointing; likewise, to be without an appointed Chief Justice for several years.” Justice Saunders said.

Under the law, both the

President and Opposition Leaders have to agree on the appointment of a Judicial Service Commission Board.

There has not been a commission since the life of the last ended in 2017 The said board is known to be responsible for the appointment of

This sentiment came in the same week, the President of the Guyana Bar Association, Pauline Chase, urged that the process for the implementation of the Judicial Service

However, even as the calls are being made from several fronts, it remains unclear whether the Government will move to change the law or to seek consultation with the Opposition Leader.

The Bar Association of Guyana is currently hosting its Inaugural Law Week under the theme “Advancing the Rule of Law in the New Normal”. This week of activities which commenced on Sunday

3rd will culminate this evening with the marquee event, the Bar Dinner, at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.

As part of these activities, and at the invitation of The Bar Association of Guyana,

The Hon. Justice Adrian Saunders, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, arrived in Guyana on Thursday.

His Honour attended and took part in the Symposium on “Paths in the Legal Profession”

held by the association at the University of Guyana on Wednesday.

On Thursday evening, Justice Saunders delivered the Keynote Address – ‘Advancing Caribbean Jurisprudence to Secure Sustainable Growth & Development at the Dinner.

While in Guyana, Justice Saunders also took the opportunity, as is the protocol to so do, to pay courtesy calls on Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana; The Hon. TRIBUTES COME IN FOR MR. HENRY RODNEY

Guyanese actor Henry Rodney

The Ministry of Education has expressed its sympathy to the family of legendary Guyanese actor Henry Rodney who passed away on April 7 at the

Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, New York City.

For years, Mr. Rodney kept Guyanese entertained through his many roles on the theatre stage and on television.

Over the past four decades, he performed in shows such as, “Nothing to Laugh About” and the “Link Show.”

He was most popularly known as Franklin, a character he played in the local television sitcom, “Agree to Disagree”.

Mr. Rodney was passionate about the theatrical arts and

made several valuable contributions to society.

He was one of the founding lecturers at the National Drama School. In addition, he worked along with the Ministry of Education in organizing and hosting cultural events.

He also lent his support to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security as a Child Rights and Women’s Rights advocate.

The talented thespian spent over 35 years in the country’s education system as a Drama, English and Literature

Teacher. He taught at St. Joseph’s High School, St. Rose’s High School, North Georgetown High School, APEX Academy, Cyril Potter College of Education, and the Marian Academy.

He also worked along with the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA).

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, said that she was grateful for his invaluable contributions which she believes will live on in all those he touched. The country is poorer without him.

Mr. Rodney has indeed left his mark on Guyanese society. He was a true son of the soil and his rich contributions to this nation will forever be treasured.

And CineGuyana extends sincere condolences to the family of the late Henry St. Cyprian Rodney and to the Theatre and MultiMedia Fraternity on his passing.

Henry’s excellent talents and refreshing personality enriched the many Films in which he appeared. He was a joy to work with as he

contributed to teambuilding and readily shared his experience and skills.

While he appeared in films produced by CineGuyana, including “The Bottle”, Henry also acted in “Guyana 1838”, “Jezebel” and several music videos including “Boogie Man”.

Guyana is the poorer

by Henry Rodney’s passing, but we are confident that his legacy will be preserved through the work he has left with us.
