A total weight of 294.2KG of marijuana carrying a street value of $147M was destroyed by ranks of the Guyana Police Force anti-narcotics branch on Wednesday midday.

The illicit substance was burnt at the incinerator on Princes Street in the city under heavy police guard.

Superintendent Wayne Dehart. Officer in Charge of the police narcotics branch, told the media that the drugs were netted over a two year period between 2015 and 2016. following a number of busts.

Tomorrow another quantity of cocaine will be dumped in the Atlantic Ocean in a similar exercise.

By Svetlana Marshall THE motion looking into the validity of the Durban Park Development Project saw a heated debate erupt in the House on Monday night, with members of the government side deeming it "unnecessary".

The motion, which was tabled by People's Progressive Party (PPP) Member of Parliament Bishop Juan Edghill. sought to have the government make full disclosure on the project, ostensibly in the interest of public accountability, transparency and good governance.

But the APNU+AFC members argued that the Coalition Government has always been open about the project, which was necessary and of tremendous benefit to the people of Guyana.

"This government has nothing to hide; our hands are clean!" Minister of Public Telecommunication. Ms. Cathy Hughes, declared as she took to the floor to defend the project in light of a string of questions raised by the PPP through the motion.

PPP MP Bishop Juan Edghill A NECESSITY Hughes told the House that the project was necessary. She explained that the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, which was built specifically to host the Super Eight matches during Cricket World Cup 2007. has the capacity to accommodate only approximately 16.000 people.

She said it became patently evident during President Granger's inauguration ceremony in May 2015 that the stadium was inadequate to accommodate the morethan 30.000 persons that were expected to attend the historic Jubilee Celebrations here this year.

"During this year, we saw the largest display of pride and nationalism this country has ever seen." Minister Hughes told the House. "It was where all of us can gather and see that gigantic Golden Arrowhead blowing in the midnight wind... No one could convincingly argue that the constraction of Durban Park was not necessary, or that it was not badly needed, especially in the time that it was completed." she argued.

Region 10 APNU+AFC Parliamentary Representative Jermaine Figueira felt it was pointless moving the motion, since the project has already found favour with the Guya-

nese people.

"Why are we having a debate on this needed and worthwhile investment for the people of Guyana?" he asked.

He said that while the Opposition does have a right to scrutinise projects and programmes established by the government, it is misleading to insinuate that the government did not provide the requisite information on the constraction of the park.

"This government. Mr. Speaker, the Granger Administration." Figueira said, "has taken yet another bold and visionary step in tackling the legacy of neglect of this jungle, this swampy, mosquito-and-reptile-infested land, and transformed it into a needed facility."

For that matter, he said, the project forms part of a larger programme, which seeks to restore the capital city to its former glory.

Bishop Edghill. countered that it would not have been necessary, had the government lived up to its promise to be transparent and accountable to the people of Guyana.

Said he: "Sir. transparency. as I understand it. is op-

erating in such a manner, or such a way. that the actions that are taken or performed are known by the parties and the stakeholders concerned."

In an attempt to imply that the Durban Park Project is a "state secret". Edghill said: "Why we don't know the name of the holding company or the private company that these donations were made to? We are asking that the rights of citizens to know and to have information are upheld, and the government must come clean on this particular issue."

He maintained that, in any democracy, transparency helps citizens to monitor the actions of their government, and is seen as a mechanism to reduce corruption. He further called on the government to make public the names of the donors, the respective amounts of money donated, and whether the sums of money collected were handed over to the Consolidated Fund.

Former Attorney-General and Legal Affairs Minister Mr. Anil Nandlall had put similar questions to the government, warning that those sitting on that side of the House should not deviate from disclosing the facts surrounding the project.

FALSE IMPRESSION Electing to take him up on the matter. Minister of Public Infrastructure. Mr David Patterson, who was not initially slated to speak, told the House that contrary to the impression the PPP is attempting to create, the APNU+AFC has always been transparent about the project.

In response to the questions posed in the motion.

Minister Patterson told the House that the Durban Park Project was managed and executed by Homestretch Development Inc. before the Ministry of the Presidency took a decision to assign the multi-million-dollar project to the Public Infrastructure Ministry in April. 2016.

He told the House that though he did not have all of the requisite documents with him and was responding based on the information available to him at the time, in the name of transparency and accountability, he was attempting to answer some of questions posed in the resolve clause of the motion.

He said that because the project was being executed and managed by a private company during the initial stage, none of the contributions received were placed into the Consolidated Fund.

It was noted, too. that asphalt was provided by the Demerara Harbour Bridge at a cost of $59.3M.

When the Public Infrastructure Ministry had initially taken over the project, some $150M was budgeted for its completion; however, the government had utilised additional funding.

By Shauna Jemmott A TRIANGULAR love affair turned deadly on Saturday night when 23-yearold excavator operator Intiaz Ally of Lot 121 "BB" Eccles, East Bank Demerara was dealt a single stab wound to his neck as he pursued a 16-yearold whom he had seen in the company of his reputed wife, Nicole Indal.

The deed, allegedly an act of self-defence, was done near his home and in presence of the woman at the centre of the intrigue.

A police press statement said Ally's reputed wife was going home from work, and the lad was riding a bicycle alongside her. as he routinely does, when the incident occurred. The lad had Indal's bag in his possession, and inside the bag was a 10inch Rambo knife. The two persons were proceeding in a northerly direction when Ally, who was driving motor car PSS 2435. struck down the suspect, who got up and began to run.

Ally eventually apprehended the lad and started to beat him; then the suspect took out the knife from IndaTs bag and inflicted a

wound to the left side of Ally's neck. The blow ended the fight and Ally's life.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited the dead man's home on Sunday.

Indal was attempting to eat a bowl of chowmein. but broke down in tears. She told Guyana Chronicle that she was at work at around 21:30 hrs. on Saturday when she received a threatening cellphone call from her reputed husband.

Indal said that one week ago she and her reputed husband had decided to spend some time apart, since Ally was having an affair and she was fearful that she would cheat on him.

ACCESS WIFI CONNECTION She said her reputed husband had for months been accusing her of cheating with the lad. whom he called "Tall boy", but she said the lad was just a customer at the Internet cafe, who stuck around to access the WiFi connection there.

She said that Ally had told her he was at Parika. and was on his way with some boys whom he was bringing to "damage" her and her lover. She said Ally

Ally eventually caught the teen and dealt him several punches to the face.

And whilst he was raining blows on the lad. Indal said, she saw when the teen thrast his hand towards Ally's neck, but she did not realise he was holding the knife. The woman said Ally fired a slap before falling to his knees, bleeding profusely before collapsing to the ground.

A policeman living in the area came to the scene with his gun. and prevented them from moving while Ally was rushed by his friend and IndaTs sister to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Asked how the teen got the knife, the woman said the teenager "always" fetched her bag. and knew exactly where in the bag to find her knife.

According to Indal. she started carrying the knife to protect herself from robbers in the area, since she walks home late at nights from work whenever Ally is working in the interior.

NIGHT OUT WITH GIRLFRIEND Meanwhile, the family of the 16-year-old suspect said he told them he was spending the night out with his girlfriend who worked at the Internet cafe.

The lad's mother said she and her son have a good relationship, and he told her he was in love with Indal. whom she claimed is the teenager's "first love".

The mother said it hurts to know that Indal. at 26. would seduce her son into a relationship which has caused him to get into trouble.

She described her last child as "peaceful", and the situation as heartbreaking; pointing out that Indal was having a relationship with her son since he was just 15 years old.

The tearful mother added: "He tell me how he love she bad bad and she love he bad. He's tell me everything.

The mother is contending that if her son did not have IndaTs bag. he would not have had possession of her knife, but he might have been killed.

"I have a 17-year-old daughter. You think I gon put myself with a lil 16-yearold? You're a big girl, think nuh — how he young, he young and in love, eh? All ah we does be young and in love. She had to be his first girlfriend, because we never had this problem with him." the mother explained.

"Tall boy" has since been taken into custody, and police have retrieved the alleged murder weapon.

People observe/celebrate the holiday by going to church or other places of worship, family reunions, watching and attending football and basketball games and feasting.

HISTORY The history of Thanksgiving Day began with a group of Separatists, known as the Brownist Emigration and Anglicans, who were later called the Pilgrims. The group of 102 sailed from Plymouth, England for America. After 65 days at sea, they landed at Provincetown Harbour, in Provincetown, Massachusetts, on November 21,1620. Diaries of the period record that they fell on their knees and thanked God for safe landing. This might have been the beginning of Thanksgiving Day in these United States.

However, most historians date the festival to December 20, 1620 when the English party landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts from Provincetown on December 11, 1620. They lost 46 of their party to the extreme cold winter and diseases.

It is said that 91 natives helped them survive the remaining winter. Because their 1621 harvest was bountiful, they celebrated it in traditional English Harvest festival manner. For three peaceful days, natives and their future slavers would celebrate together this "Thanksgiving." Ironically, it was the only time the festival included natives.

In 1614, a band of English explorers captured many Patuxet aborigines and enslaved them in England. When the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, they found only one Patuxet, a man named Squanto who had survived slavery in England and knew their language. He taught them to grow com and to fish, and negotiated a peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag nation.

A DISSENTER'S PERSPECTIVE There is another and valid perspective about Thanksgiving USA — the Indigenous People's. The natives who celebrated the "first" Thanksgiving with the future colonists were the Wampanoag. They had government, religious and philosophical beliefs, knowledge systems, and their own Thanksgiving. When they joined with the English, they were participating in what they had done on a regular basis for thousands of years.

The six nations of the Iroquois (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora), who lived in New York, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Ontario, and Quebec recite their thanks to nature in, what is known as, The Thanksgiving Address. It is spoken at community gatherings, ceremonies and at some schools before classes. The words express thanks for fellow human beings, Mother Earth, the moon, stars, sun, water, air, winds, animals, among other things

CONFLICT At first, the natives shared their land, food and knowledge of the environment with the newcomers. By 1875, the relationship declined to one of conflict and war. The Pequot Nation had not signed the peace treaty negotiated by Squanto. When the newcomers joined with other British settlers to seize their land and abduct their women, they fought back. Matters came to a head in the Pequot War between the British settlers and their native allies against the Pequot Nation. THE electorate in three developed countries voted against what some consider their countries' best interest. Analysts and political pundits will continue to examine the reasons for the electorate acting as they did and whether the signs were overlooked or taken for granted. In the meantime, it helps to make sense of what the world is presently facing or likely to face from the expressed will of the people.

In June, against polls prediction the United Kingdom (UK) electorate delivered a mixed verdict to exit the European Union (EU). Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain, while Wales and Britain voted to exit. Together this represented 52 % who wanted to exit and 48 % who wanted to remain.

Arguably several factors have influenced the exit vote. One has to do with lack of knowledge of the consequences of exiting and the benefits derived to the country and the people being in the Union. Other significant underlying factors for wanting to leave are opinions that the UK is losing its sovereignty to the EU. and the influx of migrants and refugees are posing threats to maintaining things the way they were.

There has been outcry that the healthcare system is overburden and quality care compromised as a consequence of immigrants. The presence of multilingual conversations in the public sphere and non-English cultures, and having to be accepting of these from the perspective of the natives are reflections that the society is losing its traditional English values and culture.

The point of this editorial is not to debunk or support such views but to recognise that they exist. And in that they exist and continue to inform how people vote cannot be ignored.

Nationalism speaks to patriotic feelings, principles and efforts, but nationalism can also lead to extremism and a sense of superiority. This definition is fluid across countries, people and cultures. If for some nationalism constitutes retaining one's culture in its orig-

As of January 1,2017 businesses within the Private Sector will be required to pay their employees no less than $44,200 a month, in accordance with a new National Minimum Wage Order issued by the Social Protection Ministry.

This move represents a more than 25 per cent increase from the $35,000 Minimum Wage currently being inshtuted for this category of workers.

In accordance with Section 8 of the Labour Act. Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence ordered that "the minimum rate of wages payable to an employed person shall not be less than tw o hundred and hfty-hve dollars per hour or two thousand and forty dollars per day or ten thousand tw o hundred dollars per week or forty-four thousand tw o hundred dollars per month as the case may be."

This order targets persons operating in the food, transportation, manufacturing. social services, health, hospitality and entertainment, security, garment, agriculture and tourism sectors among others.

It was noted, however, that the minimum wage payable is not limited to workers employed in the sectors or activities listed in the schedule but shall be payable to all workers in similar categories who are earning less than the sums specihed.

"Where at the commencement of this Order a worker is in receipt of a wage at a rate that is higher than that prescribed in this Order, the employer shall continue to pay to that worker wages at such higher rate and not to reduce the rate on account of this Order." the Social Protection Minister stated in issuing the order.

In October, the Government had approved the proposal which was made by the Labour Tripartite Committee to increase the minimum wage in the Private Sector from $35. 000 to just over $44. 000.

Back in January Junior Social Protection Minister.

Keith Scott had said that Government was in the process of reviewing Guyana's minimum wage, with a view of raising it. through the law. for private sector workers.

The current minimum wage

paid to public servants stands at $50. 000. while that of private sector employees is about $35. 000.

At the time. Scott, who has responsibility for labour, had said that the Ministry was conducting a countrywide survey to ascertain what the average employees working in the private sector are being paid.

Members of the Board of Directors for the National Tripartite Committee include Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence, representatives of the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industries (CAGI). the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG).

Among other things, the committee deals with matters relating to industrial relations, human resource management and labour policies.

Whether it is called nationalism or not, something is happening that has caused the UK, German and U.S. electorates to deliver victories to those who promote the view that these countries are losing their identities and preferred choice of living. Ignoring or ridiculing such thinking will not erase it, nor the choices made at the ballot. While there is no magic bullet to addressing it, a sensible proposal would be listening to the people and addressing their concerns.

— Americans often boast about having attained some democratic nirvana — a kind of unique exceptionalism that defies all logic and reasoning. For many, American Democracy is one of the gifts that this nation has presumably given the world. Yes, it's a bit messy at times, the argument goes, but way more acceptable, fair and equal when compared to many nations of the world. And that definitely is so. Over the years, stoked by a lazy and indulgent mass media, Americans have come to a place where dealing with democracy has become an unimaginable re-

Over time, he feared, the state would take away citizens' free will, their capacity to think and act, reducing them to "a herd of timid and industrious animals of which the government is the shepherd."

Like de Tocqueville back then, I also hope today that Americans would come to understand that the defects of modern democracy require great attention and careful management, especially to a system, long thought of as superior and better than most. Specifically, he hoped, we would strive "to preserve for the individual the little independence, force, and originality" that remains to him.

Reading de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" (1835), I've also come to the conclusion that any society that forces its citizens to be shaped into the mold of whatever prevailing opinion he/she thinks true or good, by virtue only and through the use of majority viewpoints , is as dangerous as any oppressive regime. Not because the political weapon is "prevailing opinion" doesn't mean it is any less oppressive of those who happen to dissent. Today, the leader of this "tyranny of the majority" works to influence the minds of the people, long drunk on its perceived and imagined "power" given to it by these leaders. But far from empowering the majority, this pseudo-democracy corrupts, weakens and isolates individuals. This then creates fertile ground for a new kind of oppression that "will resemble nothing that has preceded it in the world."

Is it because of colonial heritage, power, egos, greed, arrogance, disunity, infighting, mendicancy, a fixation on reparations, lack of global vision, distrust, jealousy, hate, envy, worry, guilt and/or fear? ...agri students, teachers against move A MAJOR disagreement at Queen's College over the siting of a $35M multi-purpose complex has led to protests by the students and members of the Agricultural Science Department.

Members of the Agricultural Science Department told the Guyana Chronicle that a $35M multi-complex facility will be erected to the south-east of the agriculture farm. The construction of this facility will encroach 10 metres onto the plot, which according to the teachers and students of this department is already "too small".

The protests began on Tuesday. November 15. when members of the Department sat in front of the farm in an attempt to stop the workers from breaking down the fence of the plot.

According to members of the Department. "We were not informed of any such decision."

Members of the Agricultural Science Department further stated that on Wednesday. November 16 all key stakeholders [the Board of Governors, teachers. students and Principal

Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) and Agricultural Science is a criterion for this award. Students also aired their concerns by highlighting that putting the complex- which will also house a cafeteria, will be "unhealthy" because the plot usually houses chicks and chickens. They also said that the "cement dust" will harm both the chicks and the students themselves, especially those who suffer from respiratory illnesses such as asthma.

This plot, which was only recently extended, houses the farming beds and research projects of the current 5th and 6th formers who are preparing to sit their CSEC and CAPE examinations next year. Students believe that the demolition of a fraction of the plot will result in the displacement of these projects and will hamper the farming activities of the other students from first to sixth forms.

He said that Guyana has been a participant and beneficiary of the group's discussions in recent years; however, he added that this country's focus has shifted to a soon- tobe new petroleum producer.

He explained that the New Petroleum group made Guyana "a beneficiary of a unique and open exchange" fomm with Uganda. He said that the latter was chosen as a suitable mentor, having recently completed preparations for oil and gas extraction, which is expected to commence next year. Uganda first discovered oil in 2006 and over time, the country has enacted laws and cautiously scratinised production-sharing agreements to ensure the country receives the best possible deals. The country has since issued eight petroleum licences since the July visit and personnel from that country's energy sector will be participating in the ongoing forum at the Cara Lodge.

According to Trotman. a set of new policies and legislation will soon be presented for review through public consultations. "They address the governance, regulation and development of opportune settings and establishment of institutional frameworks and agencies", he said, noting that drafting of the legislation is expected by next month. A public communication framework is among the items which will be addressed. He said that capacities for training locally and internationally are being addressed.

Only Wednesday United States oil giant ExxonMobil created history when it officially gave notice of its find of commercial quantities of oil in the Stabroek Block.

The notice was handed over in writing to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the first time an oil-production notice took place in the history of the countiy. Trotman deemed the event "the trampet call in heralding further development of the oil sector."

In May 2015, 800million to 1.4B of high-quality crude oil was estimated following discovery of oil through Exxon's partner, Esso Corporation at the Liza 1 well in the Stabroek Block. Since then, the company has announced through its partners, additional discoveries raising the prospects of Guyana being a major oil-producing nation in the years ahead.

"There is now great expectation, great excitement, and great responsibility in the weeks and months which he ahead," Trotman told the room full of members of the public and private sectors at Thursday's event. The two-day forum will see presentations on several aspects of oil and gas exploration, including the principles and practice of petroleum fiscal systems design, good governance of the petroleum sector and establishing a national oil company.

Trans-Pacific THE residents of Ituni were on Thursday in high spirits as a brand new ambulance was handed over to the community by Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally.

The availability of the ambulance will bring relief to the residents who were forced to provide their own transportation at a hefty cost to transport injured persons to Linden in the case of an emergency. The ambulance was handed over to the community at a simple ceremony held at the community's ball field.

Renis Morian. Regional Vice-Chairman. Elroy Adolph. Deputy Director of Community Development Council. Sandra Adams.

as the residents' cries for an ambulance have finally come to an end." The ambulance is the first she revealed to be sourced through the ministry's private/public partnership. The ambulance was sought after the residents related to the regional authorities several horror stories of dealing with emergency cases in the absence of an ambulance. "Today your prayers have been answered... we do not want you to see it as a handout, it is your ambulance." she said.

Minister Ally posited that it is the first ambulance to be gifted to the region from the Ministry of Social Cohesion. "Ituni you are part of history; today it is the first time we are making an ambulance donation to a region or community." She urged the residents to take good care of the ambulance so that it can bring maximum service to the community and will guarantee them more donations from the Ministry of Social Cohesion.

Ransewack said.

Medic Mayglen Pluck, who is currently the only medic stationed at the Ituni health post also expressed gratitude for the ambulance citing the difficulty in dealing with a patient having to be transported immediately.

She said that what is needed now is a trained ambulance attendant and a driver who is trained in first aid delivery.

Residents expressed gratitude for the ambulance as they were forced to pay $30,000 for a sick person to be transported to Linden in the eventuality of an emergency on private transportation. "We had to use a mini bus and with the condition of the road instead of getting better, getting worst, by the time you reach Linden so it is very very good that we get this ambulance; it will benefit everyone in this community," Carmain Cox, a resident of Ituni said.

This commitment was made by the Chief-of-Staff on Friday, as he donated the sum of $1 Million to the Guyana Legion, honouring a pledge made last Sunday during the Legion's Remembrance Ceremony at Goghlan House. Carifesta Avenue.

He said it is because of the veterans that the army is better off today, serving diligently and having a deeper understanding of the vital contributions veterans made

"WE NEED leaders like Abbigale!" declared President Barack Obama as he gave recognition to Guyanese Abbigale Loncke, who is participating in the US President's Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI).

During his final international speech and town hall meeting in Lima. Peru on Saturday. President Obama told the Young Leaders of the Americas: "After straggling to find her own grandfather a home care, she realised that this is a problem for other families, so she started Community Healthcare, a home care agency. She started out as a service to help families take care of their loved ones."

President Obama noted that Loncke. who is 31 years old. created a social movement that provides training

and job opportunities for young women in the healthcare industry.

"Thank you. Abigail, for the great work you are doing!" the U.S. President said, as Abigail stood in awe.

Loncke was one of four Guyanese chosen by the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown to participate in the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative in the United States, which began in October. Approximately 250 young leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean participated in the five-week programme, but Loncke was one of the YLAI finalists from 21 city hub competitions around the U.S. who competed in the final pitch competition in Washington DC. Indeed, as life progresses and changes occur, the first rung on the property ownership ladder is getting harder to climb and seems out of reach.

DOWN PAYMENT FOR YOUR FIRST HOME There are so many distractions while trying to save those dollars for the down payment on your first house. While some of our families and friends are losing their jobs because of the economic crisis, house purchase is far removed from their thoughts. Yet many first-time home buyers are resorting to unusual extremes to scrape together money for a down payment to qualify for a loan. A rising number are making life-changing sacrifices, such as taking off the cash value from their life insurance policies, raiding retirement accounts, joining what Caribbean people call 'partners, susu and box hands', taking second jobs and even moving back in with Mom and Dad in order to save and accumulate the down payment which should not be borrowed, so they could acquire a home.

The good news is that after slipping for three straight years, the share of sales to first-time home buyers in the 2016 survey ticked up to 35 percent, which is the highest since 2013 (38 percent) and a revival from the near 30-year low of 32 percent in 2015. In the 35-year history of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey, the longterm average of first-time buyer transactions is 40 percent.

Nearly half of first-time home buyers nationwide years ago could put down no purchase money deposit, according to the National Association of Realtors, compared with fewer than one in five repeat buyers. The remaining first-time buyers put down a median of approximately 10 percent of the purchase price. Today, approximately 50 percent of first-time home buyers just can't qualify.

Although the increase n in new homeowners is encouraging, their overall share of the market is still subpar. The lack of affordable new and existing inventory, home prices in many markets rising far above wages and difficulty llll saving for a down payment because of rising rents and student debt is why the homeownership rate for 18to 35-year-olds is currently hovering near its historical low.

But the tighter mortgage market is not only shutting out borrowers with weak credit ratings. It's also putting pressure on firsttime borrowers, who sometimes share financial characteristics of meager savings, a new job and a brief credit history. They also may have relatively large debts, such as a car loan or student loans, which can reduce the amount that a mortgage lender will give them. Just imagine one late payment from a student loan can haunt them for years.

CHALLENGES Headlines indicate and portray a buyer's market for real estate nationwide. Although interest rates are holding, the prices of houses have escalated comparably in many States. For first-time buyers, though, the view is quite different.

For them, the market is more challenging now than at any time since the early 1990s.

Rising mortgage rates have been constant, of course depending on one's credit score. Most financial relief that buyers might have derived have dwindled, mainly because of the demands they now have to face, given the prices in most areas. On top of that, lenders are now demanding that customers produce larger down payments, more cash reserves in the bank, higher credit scores and less debt, all of which many first-time buyers lack, especially in high-cost states such as California and New York.

He and his congregation were in agreement on this.

"Yeah!" they shouted in one accord.

The self-anointed head of the local papacy questioned: "Didn't I teach that?" And

With his congregation proudly by his side, a seemingly unapologetic 'Pope Emmanuel' said the God he serves loves him just the way he is. "Watch me!" he said.

"God could have covered this; God could have killed the person who decided to do that." he said in obvious reference to whoever had posted the damning videos on Facebook.

He believes that the airing of his sexual escapades with multiple women was aimed at showing those who have been cast out of churches for various reasons that their souls can be saved; for God looks not at their actions, but at their hearts, he said.

"All this embarrassment is worth it if two persons can say 'I now know that God loves me'. It is worth it if tw o souls can be saved; it is worth it." he said to a standing ovation, and shouts of "Amen!"

The danger for ALL Americans now, in 2016, is that the present state of affairs, with Donald Trump as President, will continue to metastasize into a modern, genteel form of watered down fascism, uniquely American. We witnessed the angry, ignorant mass of mostly white Americans that followed and believed a Trump impervious to his arrogance, his anti-women behavior and his public insults of any who disagreed with him.

These are the building blocks and foundations of the phenomenon of "the

tyranny of the masses." Trump's followers are not in the mood to listen to reason and will continue to WORK AND ACT AGAINST THEIR INTERESTS because their leader has given them a target and object for their blind hatred and anger — Muslims, Mexicans, Blacks, Hispanics, immigrants and Democrats. His supporters will continue to behave the way they do and follow their leader, because he's repackaged the old Republican myth peddled over the ages to a suffering white populace, that their poverty is of no consequence, because they are BETTER THAN OTHERS, BECAUSE THEY ARE WHITE — the worst white man is better than the best Black man, Muslim, Mexican and immigrant.

Robert Paxton in his book "The Anatomy of Fascism" wrote that "[modem] fascism was a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed national-

The definition very eloquently describes an America, already there or inevitably barreling rapidly towards that position.

For freedom of religion and freedom from religion to flourish, the state must be secular. A secular state is one where no preference is given to any one religion or to religion as opposed to none.

The cure to people believing in ideas and policies that are actually harmful to themselves and their neighbors is education, not the suppression of basic rights.

This means progress will not be a straight line heading up, but a series of ups and downs that, hopefully, trend up to a more moral and just society.

Colombia, FARC Set to Sign The Colombian government and the country's largest rebel group, FARC, are set to sign a renegotiated peace deal Thursday, November 24.

The revised document will be signed in Bogota between FARC leader Rodrigo Londono and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last month for his efforts to end the conflict with the insurgent group.

The government and representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia have been negotiating in Cuba for more than four years to bring an end to the conflict that has killed more than 220,000 and displaced millions in the Andean country.

GANESH Singh chose not to "waste" any sleep time studying for his exams, but Oddessa Blair, who graduated with him at the University of Guyana (UG) last week would stay up as late as 04:00 h to get her studying done. Although their methods differed, the two are proud of their achievements.

"I was really impressed with myself." says Oddessa in an interview with Chronicle at the Guyana Society for the Blind on High Street adding. "I made a great effort and it paid off."

Ganesh. who completed a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and graduated with a distinction, did not attend the UG ceremony with Oddessa because he felt a bit disappointed that he was unable to immediately afterwards pursue his Master's Degree.

"I feel accomplished to an extent because acquiring my degree was always a goal of my mine and to finally get it. I am somewhat satisfied. But I am a far away from where I want to be regarding my academic pursuits and hopefully, within the next few years. I can get to where I want to be."

Fredricks, AT 92, Philemon Fredricks is the oldest resident of Tapakuma, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, and perhaps he is the oldest farmer in Guyana. Despite his age, he walks around unaided, can robustly push a wheelbarrow, and tends to his one-acre farm daily.

On November 24. this coming Thursday, the father of eight will turn 93. and he is hoping that. God spare life, he would attain the magical score of 100 in good health.

A jovial Fredricks told the Guyana Chronicle that he has always "played it safe".

He credits his longevity to consumption of ground provisions. vegetables, cassava bread, fish and meat.

"I never embrace modem foods (foods in tins and cans); I never liked it. and I don't believe they are healthy. In my younger days I tried to stay away from rum. but I still used to drink one

i tion are now my passion, and the interesting thing is that my teaching is related to my social work; both tie in well.

Ganesh always had a desire to obtain tertiary education qualifications. "I don't wanna be stagnant at one level so I am hoping to move forward. I'm heading in to my Master's and if the road leads me. to a PhD; that is my overarching aim. I have a knack for always getting what I want, but not necessarily when I want it. Once I put my mind to something. I always get it. just not always within the timeframe that I outline for myself." he expressed.

A government scholarship helped Ganesh to obtain his Bachelor's Degree and to move ahead. Ganesh can foresee that finances will pose a challenge, "ft is very costly for a Masters and a PhD. so if I am afforded a scholarship to pursue both. I would very much appreciate it."

Explaining his study methods. Ganesh said: "I never wasted sleep on studying. If I want to sleep. I go to sleep. I think the latest I ever stayed up studying for UG was 11 pm. Those who know me - assignments, exams never were a bother to me. I study for an exam two days before. I would remove myself from most of my work and I'll dedicate myself to studying during the day."

I don't know what kind of priest he was. but I don't think I would have ever been able to match his skills." He also related that when a person is sober, he is hardly inclined to pick a fight, but

Oddessa. a mother of two who had also received a government scholarship, recalled some of the challenges she faced, in addition to having to travel from the West Coast Demerara each day.

"Reading with JAWS is challenging. You have to listen, interpret and then ensure it sticks. Sometimes I had to go it over and over to make that happen. Life was real hectic coming closer to the exams. To fit everything into my schedule was not easy."

MOTIVATED Oddessa was the only blind person who was present at the UG graduahon, but this did not diminish her confidence even for a bit. She will never forget the crowd's response as her name was called and she made her way to the stage.

"While I was on my way to the stage, the crowd was just shouting my name, even those who did not know me. I felt really mohvated with this response and think that motivated me to do even better with my Bachelor's Degree."

Both Ganesh and Oddessa took the same exams as everyone else at UG. only electronically.

"We would have our handouts scanned and then converted and some lecturers would provide the information electronically.

As for the exams, the lectmer just brought a copy of the exams electronically and we would put it on a system that we would take for their verification and then we would do our exams." explained Ganesh.

He added: "I never used a scribe at UG because the people there have a lot of very interesting ways that they deal with persons with disabilities on campus. Nothing is organized. They don't have a disability policy; everything is done in an ad-hoc way.

"The lecturers in the social sciences department have been very, very supportive. Without their assistance and support, I don't think I would have gotten the opportunity to graduate."

Fredricks can be seen every day tending to the banana, plantain, pineapple, sweet potato and yam plants on his farm.

He told this publication that he has been a farmer since his early days in school, and had since made a decision to follow his father's footsteps and become a farmer.

"When you are a farmer, you cannot go wrong. You always have food to eat. you have things to sell and provisions to give away, and the job keeps you very active." said Fredricks. who suffers from no known illnesses.

"In this life, you have to do simple thing that make you happy." he said, pointing out

that being an 'earthly person'. he was married twice, and has eight children. All of his children are from his first marriage, and tw o have since died.

When his first wife died, he had just attained 70. and instead of just waiting to die. he remarried at the ripe age of 72. to a woman 20 years his junior.

"I thought it was a good decision, because when you old you cannot marry someone who is also old. None of you would be able to help each other; and when both of you get knee pain and back pain, all two of you will die together." he said, as he laughed heartily.

Philemon Fredricks is well respected in Tapakuma, and has won several awards in honour of outstanding farmers in Region Two. He believes that education and agriculture are the two ways out of poverty.

By Ariana Gordon PRESIDENT David Granger remains optimistic that outgoing United Nations' Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will hold to his commitment to give "an assessment" of the next step to be taken in the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy, and refer same to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a final and definitive ruling, thereby ending this controversy that has deeply affected Guyana's development over the past 50 years.

Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge is currently in New York, meeting with incoming Secretary General of the United Nations (UN).

His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, in a process designed to secure the promised

- Medical Council says in rejecting assertions by columnist Freddie Kissoon The Medical Council of Guyana has rejected the attack on Cuban-trained doctors by Kaieteur News columnist Freddie Kissoon, who, in his November 18, 2016 column, had called the Cuban-trained doctors "Guyanese messengers of death."

"Following guidelines set out by law. the Council registers all doctors, including those trained in Cuba.

"It is aware of the contents of the syllabus used to train doctors, and is satisfied that the medical education

provided to Guyanese doctors in Cuba is of a high standard." the Council stated in a release on Saturday evening.

The Council has said the conclusions drawn by Mr. Kissoon in his article are false, and his attacks on young Guyanese doctors and the Cuban system of medical learning, where they were trained, are entirely unjustified.

Since Cuba does not have a system of internship training similar to Guyana's system, all doctors who seek

registration after medical education in Cuba undergo an additional 18-month period of supervised rotation before becoming fully registered to practise medicine, the Council has stated.

The Council noted that during this period of supervised rotation, scrutiny is exercised over the standard and quality of the medical knowledge and the practical medical skills learned by those doctors.

"They are also graded by heads of department and other senior doctors practising

in various medical specialties." the Council stated.

It added that the period of supervised rotation must be completed to the satisfaction of the supervising doctors, some of whom are. or have been, members of the Council; which is aware of the rigorous nature of the rotation programme and is confident that doctors who successfully complete it are at least competent in the medical knowledge and skills required of a doctor.

"The rotation programme serves as an additional

learning experience for Cuban-trained doctors, and is a comprehensive introduction to medical practice in Guyana under supervised conditions.

"The Council is aware that, as with every other profession. the competence and experience of junior doctors is enhanced by working under the guidance of more senior colleagues, to whom referrals are made in appropriate cases."

The mass murder and suicide took place in the western section of this South American Republic, near neighbouring Venezuela where an American religious leader.

Reverend Jim Jones, had set up his People's Temple Church bringing with him hundreds of American followers who put their faith and trust in him.

The chief executive officer of the Roraima Group of Companies. Captain Gerry Gouveia. whose company launched the programme of visits to the site of the tragedy, was among the first Guyanese to fly into the area hours after reports reached the capital that visiting United States Congressman Leo Ryan and his team which included members of the American media, had been attacked by gunmen at the Port Kaituma Airstrip as the

aircraft on which they were aboard was about to be airborne.

Gouveia. then a pilot with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said that the decision to offer visits to what remains of the area is based on the need for people with varying interests, including the families of victims, to have an opportunity to see first-hand the location of this historic tragedy and to. where necessary, help them achieve closure.

The Government of Guyana has erected a monument at the entrance to the Jonestown compound to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy, the majority of whom were forced at gunpoint by Jones fanatics to drink a cyanide-laced concoction.

According to Gouveia. his Roraima Tours company will soon hold a simple ceremony to routinise his company's periodic flights to Jonestown, more specifically. to the monument erected to honour the victims of the tragedy.

Gouveia and his team of Guyanese soldiers rescued Speier and flew her to the international airport at Timehri where a U.S. military aircraft awaited the arrival of the injured survivors.

Ironically. Gouveia "s announcement that Roraima Airways will now be regularising its flights to Port Kaituma from whence visitors will make their way to the site of Jonestown coincides with increasingly assertive pronouncements from the private sector regarding the need to aggressively market the country abroad.

Gouveia said that Jonestown is not about marketing Guyana, it is about "reminding ourselves and the rest of the world of the Jonestown tragedy and the lessons that it teaches.

Perhaps there is an example there from which Guyana can learn, going forward.

The rest of the world will, of course, have its own separate interest."

Progress is the activity of today and the assurance of tomorrow - Emerson The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation has for the past six months, become actively engaged in a programme specifically designed to ensure that nJTANA

the nation's basketball standards will improve and place Guyana on par with the Caribbean countries as well as those in the Americas.

Evidence of this promise has already been demonstrated by the nation's young players being successful at the developmental tournaments, with Guyana winning the Silver Medal, after six months of preparation for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation's Under 16 Championship.

Our youngsters — boys and girls — have also participated in another developmental tournament in Puerto Rico, where, although they did not medal, they gained valuable experience that will benefit them and the nation for years to come. In addition, Guyana's youth teams are currently in Jamaica participating in the Tri-Nation invitational tournament.

The GABF's developmental programme is to be admired, when we consider the tremendous advantages that it offers to either host or participate in international tournaments, thereby giving Guyana's youngsters opportunities to take their games to higher levels.

It would be churlish to ques-

tion this developmental programme that provides significant amounts of LSD - Love, Security and Discipline — while they experience exposure at the Regional and International levels, that allow them to play against teams that are notably superior. Even if they lose some of these encounters, it should not be regarded as a waste of time or money, for they will serve to build the skills and charter of these young players.

Indeed these types of interactions, should be seen as investments in the future of the game of basketball in Guyana: participation in these types of tournament allows the coaches and players to observe and practice the different standards and styles of the competing countries.

Progress and development come at a cost and the price of achieving desirable results is usually high. The youngsters MUST be guided to see these opportunities as golden and as once in a lifetime chances to achieve the best to which they can aspire.
