–– Green Expo to focus on small businesses, innovation and entrepreneurship

THE inaugural Green Guyana Expo has been tapped as a ‘one of the kind’ event that will illustrate the economic opportunities to be had from Guyana’s transformation into the world’s first Green State.

This event, which is organised under the theme: “Sustainable economic growth through small businesses innovation, entrepreneurship and transformative government policies,” will be two-fold. The first part is the summit being held at the Ramada Princess Hotel on October 18 and 19, while the Expo will be held from October 18-21 on the National Stadium tarmac.

According to Chairman of the Expo and of the African Business Roundtable (ABP), Eric Phillips, “It’s the first time that this is being done anywhere in the

Green State Development Strategy (GSDS), to Green Energy, to Green Living and Manufacturing.

The expo, on the other hand, already has attracted over 120 exhibitors and will display innovation in business and livelihoods. There will be a ‘Green Village’, showcasing entrepreneurs from all across the country; a ‘Green Youth Tent’, for young people to display their innovations and show just how critical they are in Guyana’s transformation and a Kids Zone, which will engage the younger ones.

“It’s going to be a very important process of educating, not only our young people in schools, but our politicians [and] our business people, to show them where the future lies,” Phillips related.

“Everyone perceives us as an [emerging] oil economy, but we are a Green

Cognisant of this, the chairman disclosed that the private sector is an important target audience. “We need our private sector to know what the opportunities are, and so that they can work along with government towards the Green State agenda.”

Moreover, he posited: “In order to facilitate sustainable green growth, we would have to change policies to create an easier and more enabling environment for businesses and the average citizen.” This is where the expo will focus on showing what Guyana’s transformation is intended to be, while the summit will provide an avenue for discussions on policy change.

And the expo aims to attract thousands of citizens who will garner a practical idea of what the green state will be like. Phillips shared that resource-efficient green

The resource-efficient houses that will be on display at the Green Guyana Expo at the National Stadium tarmac, Providence Caribbean because it is our vision to become the world’s first Green State, and that is underpinned by a Green Economy.”

Furthermore, he said: “Ultimately in the green economy, you have to export; you have find new markets; you have to create new companies and new jobs.”

Phillips shared that the “comprehensive” expo is one stepping stone along Guyana’s path of achieving this ambitious vision. In so doing, the two-day summit will feature six discussion panels of experts and stakeholders, local and foreign.

Each panel is structured around specific components of the Green Agenda, i.e., from an introduction to the

houses, an electric car and perhaps a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) mobile will be on display, to show citizens the way sustainable development will be integrated into their very everyday life.

And the aim is to use the expo to garner their feedback.

“So you see, it is Guyana’s vision to become a Green State [and] to be a global leader in renewable energy.

We have a vision of where we wanna go economically, in a way that is economically friendly, and in a way that we make the best use of our patrimony,” he stated.

SMART DEVELOPMENT The aim is to harness the resources generated from oil and gas and use that to build the green economy, which encompasses renewable energy, a vibrant manufacturing and export sector and a generally green society, he explained.

Additionally, he contended, “Oil will only generate so many jobs and we need to create an economy that creates jobs every year in an area where we have comparative advantages.”

Prominent Region Two doctor dies

RESIDENTS and staff attached to the Suddie Public Hospital, Region Two, are mourning the passing of Dr. Darmalinga Ramachandra, popularly known as Dr. Rama.

The bone specialist, who hailed from Malaysia and had taken up residence in Guyana in the early 1980s, had given selfless service to the health sectors of Regions Two, Three and Six. He died Friday morning at age 64.

Since the announcement of his death by relatives, the Ministry of Public Health and scores of persons have expressed sadness and extended condolences to his family and relatives.

An evening of remembrance was held by management of the Suddie Public Hospital in memory of the late doctor.

Dr Rama came to Guyana at the request of then President Forbes Burnham and had served Region Two for 26 years up to the time of his passing.

Councillors of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two also expressed profound sadness at his passing. Head of the Region Two RDC, Devanand Ramdatt, said Dr Rama served the region well and his death is certainly a great loss to the region’s health sector.

According to Regional Health Officer, Dr. Afarah Khan, Dr Rama’s services will surely be missed as she praised his commitment and dedication to his work.

The late Dr Rama will be cremated today.

Islamic State in Nigeria might soon kill health workers, schoolgirl: ICRC

GENEVA/ABUJA (Reuters) – The Islamic State in Nigeria might kill the healthcare workers it has held hostage since March within 24 hours, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Sunday, calling for mercy and urging Nigeria’s government to intervene.

Medical workers Hauwa Mohammed Liman and Alice Loksha were working in the town of Rann when they were kidnapped along with ICRC midwife Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa, who was killed in September, the ICRC said in a statement.

The armed group was

also holding a 15-year-old schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, who was abducted in February from her school in the town of Dapchi, it said.

Militants allied to Islamic State said in a video posted online last month that they would kill their hostages within a period of time that is due to elapse on Monday.

“Speed and urgency are critical. A deadline that could result in the killing of another healthcare worker is less than 24 hours away,” the ICRC said in a statement, without giving further details on the deadline or its conditions.

“We urge you: spare and release these women. They

are a midwife, a nurse and a student. Like all those abducted, they are not part of any fight,” Patricia Danzi, director of ICRC operations in Africa, was quoted as saying in the statement.

The ICRC said the militants recently confirmed the deadline to them. Demands being made in exchange for the release of their hostages have not been reported.

Two spokesmen for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari declined to comment.

Last week a government delegation led by the minister of information travelled to the northeastern city of Maiduguri for talks with relatives of

the hostages.

Liman was working as a midwife at an ICRC-supported hospital, while Loksha was a nurse working with UNICEF. Islamic State in West Africa split from the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram in 2016 and has killed hundreds of soldiers in attacks in northeastern Nigeria in the past few months, security and military sources have told Reuters.

Like Boko Haram, ISWA wants to create a separate state in northeast Nigeria that adheres to a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

The Christian Social Union (CSU) won 37.3 per ent of the vote, preliminary results showed, losing its absolute majority for only the second time since 1962 - an outcome

sure to stoke infighting in the conservative party, already a difficult partner for Merkel in Berlin. “Of course today is not an easy day for the CSU. We did not achieve a good result,” Bavarian premier Markus Soeder told a gathering of his party. “We accept the result with humility,” he said, adding that the CSU nonetheless wanted to form a stable government as soon as possible.

Without naming Merkel, SPD leader Andrea Nahles said the “poor performance” of the federal government in

Berlin, where the SPD is in a coalition with the conservatives, was one of the reasons for her party’s weak showing in Bavaria. “It’s clear that something has to change,” she said.

CSU leader Horst Seehofer has been a thorn in Merkel’s side since her 2015 decision to open Germany’s borders to more than one million migrants, gradually shifting his party to the right in an ultimately futile effort to counter the rise of the AfD.

Antigua and Barbuda passport now world’s 27th most powerful ANTIGUA -According to the Henley Passport Index, compiled by global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & PartnersCitizens, Antigua and Barbuda now has the 27th most powerful passport on the planet in 2018.

The country’s passport jumped three spots after ranking 30th in the world in 2017 and is now fourth in the Caribbean (Barbados, 1st).

In the most recent Hen-

ley Passport Index, Antigua and Barbuda now enjoys visa-free access to 150 destinations, improving from its previous 140 destinations.

The 2017 Hurricane Irma has propelled Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda to revise their citizenship-by-investment programmes in order to boost investments and create hurricane funding relief. St Lucia also showed the largest growth, leaping

five spots from 36th place in 2017 to 31st place in 2018.

First place went to Japan, which has the most powerful passport worldwide, followed by Singapore at second, and France, Germany and South Korea in third place.

In fourth place was Denmark, Finland, Italy, Spain and Sweden, followed by the UK, USA, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal at fifth

place.

Placing last on the list again were Afghanistan and Iraq.

Ecuador partly restores internet access for WikiLeaks founder Assange (REUTERS) - Ecuador has restored partial internet access to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who took refuge in the country’s London Embassy more than six years ago, WikiLeaks and an Assange lawyer said separately on Sunday.

The move comes nearly six months after the Ecuadorean government suspended Assange’s communications in March, after he discussed

issues on social media that could damage the country’s diplomatic relations, including a diplomatic crisis between London and Moscow, as well as Catalonian separatism.

“Ecuador rolls back @ JulianAssange isolation,” WikiLeaks said in a message on Twitter. The change was also confirmed by Assange’s Australian legal adviser, Greg Barns, who called it “a

welcome development.”

An Assange spokesman said his communications have been only partially restored.

Assange took refuge in Ecuador’s London Embassy after British courts ordered his extradition to Sweden to face questioning in a sexual molestation case. That case has since been dropped. But friends and supporters say Assange now fears he could

be arrested and eventually extradited to the United States if he leaves the embassy. WikiLeaks, which published U.S. diplomatic and military secrets when Assange ran the operation, faces a U.S. grand jury investigation.

Support for Peru’s president surges after battle with Congress

LIMA (Reuters) - Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra’s approval rating shot up 16 points to a high of 61 per cent in October, after he adopted a harder line with the opposition-run Congress, a monthly Ipsos poll showed on Sunday.

The public opinion survey, published in local newspaper El Comercio, was taken on Oct. 10-12, after Vizcarra threatened to dissolve Congress unless it passed his proposals for fighting entrenched graft in one of Latin America’s most stable economies.

Congress, where the unpopular conservative party Popular Force has a majority,

approved the legislation last week.

Vizcarra took office in March to replace former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who resigned in a graft scandal on the eve of his near-certain impeachment.

Little known in Peru when he was sworn in, Vizcarra has built support by responding to widespread anger at back-to-back graft scandals in Peru with a proposed overhaul of the country’s judicial and political systems.

The Ipsos survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.77 percentage points.

Friends and supporters of Assange say he has had contact only with lawyers since Ecuador suspended his communications with the outside world. WikiLeaks recently announced that one of Assange’s longtime associates, Kristin Hrafnsson, had taken over from him as WikiLeaks editor in chief.

As a 2016 presidential

candidate, President Donald Trump praised WikiLeaks for publishing hacked emails that embarrassed his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

But the Trump administration officials have condemned Assange, while a federal grand jury continues a long-running criminal investigation of WikiLeaks and its personnel, a U.S. official recently confirmed.

Antibiotic resistance - the looming medical catastrophe

MOST Guyanese know of antibiotics. Many persons go to the pharmacy and purchase antibiotics at the first sign of a runny nose; some people do not even know, or care, what type of antibiotic they buy. Others demand that doctors prescribe antibiotics for diarrhoea, skin rashes, and every illness in between. Many doctors – just to get rid of a nagging patient – just give in and write a prescription.

This reality is not unique to Guyana, it happens worldwide. Unfortunately, this overuse and abuse of antibiotics will probably cause one of the greatest medical disasters in modern history, unless we work to avert it.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, and are among a class of drugs called antimicrobials.

These drugs work by killing the germs that cause disease.

Humans have not always had access to antibiotics. The era of antibiotics began in the 1940s with an accidental discovery in 1928 by Alex-

ander Fleming, Professor of Bacteriology at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. That discovery lead to the isolation of penicillin, the first widely used antibiotic. Before this era, doctors had nothing with which to fight common infections. As a result, people usually died of infections which are routinely cured today. For example, the death rate from bacterial pneumonia was 35 per cent, and bacterial meningitis was almost always fatal.

Presently, almost no one dies from bacterial pneumonia, and meningitis – and many other diseases – are routinely cured by correctly used antibiotics.

After the discovery of the first antibiotic, many new ones were discovered.

Those “wonder drugs” became widely manufactured and used in the five decades after 1940; so popular and effective were they, that Surgeon General William H. Stewart told Congress in 1969 that it was time to “close the book on infectious diseases,

to declare the war against pestilence won.” Sadly, he was wrong; the germs have adapted and learned how to beat antibiotics.

All living things adapt to survive. With the extensive use of antibiotics, bacteria have adapted in various ways. Some of them have learned how to make chemicals that destroy antibiotics, making them ineffective.

Some bacteria are resistant to one or two antibiotics, yet others are resistant to all known antibiotics -- these are called superbugs. Doctors call this anti-microbial resistance (AMR). This change is an extremely worrisome development. Unfortunately, humans are ourselves largely to blame.

Antibiotics are antimicrobials that affect only bacteria; they should therefore be prescribed only for the treatment of bacterial diseases. Flu, colds, and up to 60 per cent of diarrhoeal diseases are caused by viruses; antibiotics are therefore ineffective. But

if a patient has, for example, a cold and uses an antibiotic, any bacteria in that patient’s system could become resistant. Patients who do not completely use all the antibiotics prescribed by a doctor can also encourage bacteria in their bodies to develop resistance. The result is, that if that resistant bacteria infects another person, that particular class of antibiotics may not work. If the infected person survives long enough, a doctor may have to prescribe a more expensive drug, or one that may harm the patient.

Another concern is the use of antibiotics in livestock to promote growth.

That practice can result in the production of resistant types of diseases which can cross over to humans, who would be powerless to treat them.

One answer to the problem may be to produce new antibiotics. Unfortunately, this is not easy to do. It costs a lot of money and time to produce a new antibiotic. According to the World Health

Organisation (WHO) only two new classes of antibiotics have been found in the last 15 years. Additionally, drug companies do not make large profits from antibiotics, so, companies just don’t bother.

The result of the rapid advance of drug-resistant germs and slow rate of development of new drugs is clear: we could go back to the days when we have no effective ways to treat common infections.

A 2014 WHO report stated that, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. Antibiotic resistance—when bacteria change so antibiotics no longer work in people who need them to treat infections—is now a major threat to public health. The WHO stated too, that inappropriate use of antibiotics in animal husbandry is a major contributor to the emergence and spread of an-

tibiotic-resistant germs, and that the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feeds should be restricted.

Considering the seriousness of the threat to the human species, a global action plan was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May, 2015. World Antibiotic Awareness Week is now held every November; and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the WHO, and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) have all issued calls for nations to use antibiotics responsibly.

On an individual level, we must recognise the value of antibiotics. Citizens and health care professionals must commit to actions that will ensure that this valuable resource is available for future generations. And we must resist the urge to misuse and abuse antibiotics, because if we continue to do so, we will go back to the dark days of the pre-antibiotic era.

Protesters should seek answers of their leaders Dear Editor, AT this time, President Granger has been visiting constituencies, campaigning for and on behalf of his APNU grouping for the imminent Local Government Elections (LGEs). Although he may be seen to be addressing gatherings as APNU leader, he is also President of all Guyana , irrespective of which geographic space he graces, and of its political party affiliation.

He is always prepared and ready to speak with all citizens, of whatever ethnicity. This is his creed, which he practises to the letter.

When President Granger spoke at a community meeting at the Corriverton Primary

School with regard to their rights to elect the leaders who are capable, he had been doing so in the capacity of President of all Guyana and its people.

It was therefore both mandatory and inevitable that he would have wanted to engage the protestors who were gathered outside of the venue, at which he was speaking with residents about their issues.

Instead, these protesters refused his invitation, conveyed through an emissary. It was clearly a political action without any merit; and one which continues to illustrate constituents being conned by their political party leaders. It was also racist in content, for what else should have prevented a meeting with the President, particularly when their

pickets were about GuySuCo and the issue of the outstanding severance pay.

Editor, these persons who are undoubtedly PPP/C supporters -- and it is their constitutional right if they are -- should be reminded that it is their party when in government which is responsible for the collapse of an industry which they once proudly served, and which had provided a secure livelihood for them and their respective families. As much as it may be their right to picket a government that is in no way responsible for the tragedy of what has befallen the sugar industry, in the same vein, and even more, they ought to begin to ask questions of their party leaders: Jagdeo, Ramotar, Komal Chand et al, as to what happened to GuySuCo. It is their right

as citizens of Guyana, to hold their leaders accountable, especially on a matter that has had severe impact on their right to earn a living.

Why they are continuing to allow themselves to be led astray by party leaders for purely selfish ends, can only be answered from the platform of political opportunism, and the motive of race. Are they being fair to themselves, to be used in this manner?

But let them be reminded of this fact, that President Granger is a President for all Guyana, and all its peoples, and does not discriminate.

Hubu gets new $9.5M ramp AS farmers from the riverine communities journey to the various markets on the coast to sell their produce, an in-transit stop is usually made at the Hubu koker on the East Bank Essequibo, where the produce is transferred from the many boats into trucks and canters.

For decades, the dilapidated state of a makeshift ramp built by a farmer, made the transfer of goods difficult.

Today, the provision of a bigger and sturdier ramp which was constructed by the Regional Administration, at the cost of approximately $9.5M, makes the journey

much easier. The newly constructed ramp is made of strictly greenheart wood and sits on 65ft wooden piles.

The ramp allows for heavy duty trucks and canters to come within proximity of the boats and allow for an easier transfer of produce.

Shon Budram, a plantain farmer from Eastern Hogg Island, supplies a tremendous amount of plantains to Georgetown. He said that the new ramp has brought him significant relief in terms of transferring his plantains from the boat to the truck.

“Before time we had to walk up the shaky steps and a long distance to the

front, and it would sometime take us hours to discharge the boat, but now the truck comes straight up to the ramp and it is from the boat into the truck. In less than half an hour, the boat discharge and truck gone. The new ramp has saved me time and you know time is money and money is time,” said Budram.

Pocho Lall, who brings water coconuts from Fort Island, said “it is so much easier now that I get the chance to sell at more locations than before. At first, because of the amount of time spent here offloading and unloading, I would normally only

get to sell at one market and then hurry back to catch the boat, but now I have time to stop at other locations and not be forced to sell out my coconuts cheap.”

Nadine Shirtan, who comes from Lower Bonasika, echoed similar sentiments, adding that because of this newly constructed ramp the area has seen a greater flow of traffic both in terms of people and vehicle.

She opined that travelling by boat with a heavy load to Parika is far way costlier.

Is Guyana your property Jagdeo?

Dear Editor, IT has become obnoxious for one to read the daily news and see hypocritical, superficial and ludicrous utterances coming from the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, who recently claimed at a PPP public meeting that the LGEs are the start of a movement to take back Guyana. As a former President who proved his disdain for local governance before, during and after his time in government, he continues to expose his true entitlement demeanour as a spoilt individual who believes Guyana is his own.

The thought of local empowerment was treated like a treasonous act under his presidency as he tyrannised and micro-managed (for personal/political gain) every tier of Guyana’s governance system. Furthermore, every town or region and I might add friends and party comrades who were not in favour of his dictatorship had to suffer socially, economically and emotionally as he used every strata of the government system to ensure his opponents were punished.

He does not believe in democracy, he does not believe anyone else should have a differing thought from his; just ask his former senior party comrades Ramkarran, Nagamootoo and others.

His overtures in recent

times as the saviour and answer for Guyana’s democracy is such a farce for millennials and Guyanese as a whole, as we are all aware of his sinister exploits which he hides under the umbrella of presidential immunity.

Jagdeo reportedly told the gathering at the meeting that they need(ed) to understand the importance of the elections when he himself avoided such elections during his tenure. He claimed “Guyanese” are fed up with the coalition government when the fact is, Guyanese are enjoying a better and honest livelihood, improved public infrastructure and service, safer neighbourhoods, inclusive governance and a better international rating which has led to many countries waiving visa requirements for Guyanese. It is so obvious that during his time, Guyanese from all walks of life planned their exit strategy and headed for the passport office and airports, while presently Guyanese at home and abroad are planning their involvement in local development and for many, a return to their land of birth.

How can Jagdeo call Guyana’s present governance a disaster, when almost daily Guyana made international headlines for mass murders, corruption and other societal ills which placed Guyana as one of the worst places to live in under his leadership? Even diplomats,

Linden, Buxton and every afro-dominant community were under siege, while a selected questionable few were being enriched and a notorious drug lord and “phantomism” became institutionalized. Today there is an actual fight against drugs and crime, a trajectory of a good life for all and every community is seeing development irrespective of race, religion, or creed.

He reportedly instructed mayors, councillors and regional representatives not to attend or participate in events organized to empower municipalities and further decentralize governance because he believes in a dictatorship which strives on top down management. Even while President Ramotar ruled he imposed himself as the defacto leader, now he is trying to hold on to power in the PPP after the courts ruled he cannot run again for president.

Not because he has presidential immunity it means he is a saint. Not because the coalition government has not showed the testicular

fortitude as yet in bringing charges against him he is invincible. He is still seen by many at home and internationally in the same league as Mohamed Suharto, Ferdinand Marcos, Arnold

Oleman and many others along that line.

GT pastor fatally stabs TT counterpart

A GUYANESE man, who is a pastor, allegedly stabbed another of his ilk in Longdenville, Trinidad, on Saturday.

The victim, a 42-yearold woman named Alisa Ali, who subsequently died, lived in the community of Gill Trace, Lamont Street, Longdenville.

According to a Trinidad Guardian report, local investigators said that Ali was a pastor at a church just next to her home.

The report further indicated, that at around 22:30 Pastor Alisa Ali hours on Saturday night, [Trinidad Guardian Ali got into an argument photo] with the Guyanese pastor and was stabbed multiple times to her face and upper body. Her children, who heard the commotion, ran into her bedroom and found her bleeding from stab wounds.

The suspect, according to eyewitnesses, subsequently ran out of the house and onto Gill Street, where he flagged down a passing car and escaped.

Meanwhile, Ali’s daughter and son-in-law rushed her to the Chaguanas District Health Facility where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police in the Twin Island Republic are said to be searching for the alleged killer, even as they continue their investigations into the incident.(Extracted and reworked from the Trinidad Guardian).

Guyanese pilot dies in Long Island crash

A GUYANESE pilot who operates a flight training school in Connecticut in the United States died after a small plane crashed off Long Island, New York, on Saturday around midday.

Reports are that Munidat “Raj” Persaud was among three persons who were on board the twin-engine Piper PA-34 aircraft which crashed in the waters off Quogue Beach at about 11:10hrs.

According to the New York Post, one body was recovered from the plane which was on its way to Charleston Executive Airport in South Carolina, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The twin-engine Piper PA-34 took off from Danbury Municipal Airport in Connecticut and flew about 60 miles before it crashed, the New York Post reported. “It’s still a search and recovery at this point,” Quogue Village Police Chief Christopher Isola said during a Saturday evening news conference.

“The Coast Guard, along

with other marine assets, will continue in that effort.”

The report stated that witnesses who spotted the plane nosedive into the water immediately radioed the Southampton police and the U.S. Coast Guard, which dispatched a 47-foot motor lifeboat to investigate.

Pieces of an aircraft — which included a wing and oil sheen — were spotted near the reported crash site, officials said.

At about the same time, there were reports that engine parts washed up on Quogue Beach.

Surfers saw the plane “sputtering and crashing into the ocean” Kevin Raynor, a third assistant chief for the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, told reporters.

“The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause for the accident,” the FAA spokesman said.

Before it took off on its final flight, the plane was flown on Saturday morning from Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Connecticut to Danbury Municipal,

officials said.

2016 FIASCO In June 2016, Persaud, along with another pilot flew two Cessna planes out of Guyana illegally under the cover of darkness, leaving officials at the Eugene F Correia International Airport at Ogle in a quandary.

The two Cessna 206 aircraft, bearing registration numbers 8R-GTP and 8R-GMP, were owned by Oxford Aviation which Persaud had headed while in Guyana.

During the early-morning blitz, Persaud long with another pilot whose only name was given as “Vladimir,” departed undetected to Grenada and later island-hopped their way farther north to the island of Anguilla.

This newspaper was informed that one of the aircraft was prevented from moving onward, while the other was allowed to depart for San Juan, Puerto Rico, the following day.

The flights did not have the necessary Guyana Civil

Munidat Raj Persaud Aviation Authority (GCAA) clearance and permission to fly while a High Court injunction was in place barring the two aircraft from leaving this jurisdiction.

The court matter stemmed from action taken by another company, Domestic Airways, owned by pilot Orlando Charles, which filed litigation for payment for damage reportedly caused by one of the Oxford Aviation planes.

It is unclear what the result of the court matter was.

Peace maker knifed to death ... abused victim hid murder weapon

A 40-year-old man is in custody as the police in ‘A’ Division continue their investigation into the murder of 19-year-old Nyron Vyphuis, who was allegedly killed

by Junior Jones.

The incident took place at Circuit Ville, Yarrowkabra, Soedsyke-Linden Highway,when Vyphuis attempted to intervene in an argument that the older man and his reputed wife were having at the time.

Following the murderous act ,which saw the older man using a kitchen knife to inflict a stab wound to the teen’s chest, the reputed wife of the man who was being abused when the teen intervened, picked up the murder weapon and tossed it into a pit latrine. Residents however saw when she did that and when the police arrived they alerted them.

According to residents, police recovered a bloodstained knife.

Cousin of the dead man, Anny Smith, said that she saw her cousin earlier on Saturday when he was finished doing his handyman work around the squatting area.

The woman explained that the 19-yearold then went to the front of the area with his girlfriend and the reputed wife of the suspect asked him to follow her to the front of the road, so that she can place her sister in law into a taxi.

When they returned to the area, the two stopped at the home where the suspect lived

and shortly after the man and the woman got into an argument where, he reportedly hit the woman.

It was at that point that the now dead teen intervened and cautioned the older man saying “you can’t knock Aunty Lexy.”

At that point the man became incensed and picked up an axe and charged to the teen but persons in the area stopped him and took away the axe from him. The man then rushed into his home and returned with a kitchen knife.

“He took the kitchen knife, hold my cousin by he shirt and bore he in the stomach,” Anny Smith related to this publication.

The young man was reportedly left to bleed to death on the dam, until some person approached Anny and told her that the pastry man had murdered her cousin. The village leader was immediately informed and he along with some others, went to the home of the suspect and arrested him as he had retreated there after allegedly committing the act.

The police in a press statement told the media that the incident took place sometime around 19hrs on Saturday. They also confirmed that the murder weapon was recovered and that the suspect is in custody, as the investigation continues.

The body of the young man is presently at a funeral home and a post-mortem is expected to be performed on it tomorrow.

Woman brutally murdered in Corriverton

A 30-YEAR-OLD woman was on Sunday brutally murdered by a man with whom she shared a twoweek relationship. Dead is Itesha Iranda Frank of Lot 110 Crane Street, Queenstown, Corriverton, Berbice.

Reports are that at approximately 08:30 hours on Sunday, her partner, identified as Dern Hunte, 34, better known as “Rasta”, and who is said to be mentally unstable, cornered her and dealt her several stab wounds before slashing her throat.

Residents related that the couple for the past week was having constant heated arguments.

A source close to the dead woman, related that she (Frank) had decided to leave the relationship and

was scheduled to return to Georgetown on Monday.

Frank reportedly went to Hunte’s home on Sunday morning to uplift her clothes, but an argument started between the two and she walked out the yard.

Hunte is said to have followed the woman, and when he caught up with her in the street, he grabbed her from behind and began stabbing her about the body.

The woman, eyewitnesses recalled, put up a fight but the man overpowered her and they ended up in a nearby trench, where he continued to stab her and slashed her throat until she took her last breath.

“I hear a screaming and when I turn I see the two a them scramble, Rasta juking she with a knife and she

fighting back scrambling and pulling he. Them end up in the drain and them tumble, but Rasta end up on top and hold on pun she hair and pull she up and slash she throat, then start stabbing again,” an eyewitness told this publication.

Continuing, the eyewitness said that Hunte remained over Frank until he was satisfied that she was dead. Then, he then pulled her out from the mud, wiped her face, kissed her and held her in his arms for a little while.

The police arrived promptly and arrested him.

Residents who witnessed the ordeal, related that they were fearful for their lives as Hunte is known to have a history of mental health issues.

“We see everything and call the police, but we fright-

According to information, Frank came to Berbice about a month ago and began working as a waitress at the Crimson Light Bar, located at Number 78 Village. It was while at her place of employ she met the suspect and they began to ‘live home’.

Hunte, a patient of the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital, was deported from the United States some 10 years ago and has been reportedly doing odd jobs around the community.

The murder weapon was retrieved by the police.

GTU/MoE to work out non-salary benefits ALTHOUGH the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) agreed on salary increases last Friday, they are still in discussion to work out the non-salary benefits, which are expected to be decided upon by Wednesday, when the agreement is expected to be signed.

GTU General Secretary Coretta McDonald on Sunday confirmed that the union and the government have not yet completely finalised the plan for other non-salary benefits.

According to McDonald, she expects that these issues will be clarified

by Wednesday and does not see it affecting the moving forward of the agreement.

Following the resumption of negotiations between the GTU and the MoE last week, with the involvement of President David Granger, the GTU was offered a retroactive salary in-

crease of 10 per cent for 2016 and eight per cent respectively for 2017 and 2018. The GTU rejected that offer and was subsequently offered an increased 12 per cent for 2016, with which it agreed. There is also an offer of $350M towards debunching “Some tough decisions had to be made to ensure that every member of the teaching fraternity benefits.

We could not have accepted a deal that would see over 8000 teachers receiving nothing for 2016 and 2017.

This new deal will allow for the least of the scale, which is a teacher aid receiving approximately 100,000 retroactively, with the exception of the debunching,” the GTU said in a correspondence to its members.

Aside from calling for salary increases over the past few years, the union has been campaigning for a number of non-salary benefits to be addressed, including clothing allow-

ances, duty-free concessions, Whitley Council and risk allowance monies, performance incentives, improved qualification allowances, and hardline station allowances, among others. According to McDonald, these have not been completely decided upon as yet.

The state of the non-salary benefits has been of concern for several teachers who took to social media to voice their concerns.

When the negotiations between the two parties began last August, the union had some 27 issues that they were looking for the ministry to address. As the negotiations continued, a few of the non-salary benefits were eventually agreed upon in August, even as the salary increases offered at that time were rejected.

The union had immediately rejected an original offer of a one-time payout of $700M for salary increases and $200M towards debunching. This saw the teachers going on a two-week

strike, which came to an end when the ministry agreed to let the dispute move to voluntary arbitration.

The GTU was calling for an increase of 40 per cent for 2016 and respective incremental increases of five per cent for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

This proposal was not accepted by the government and the union had announced last week that it was preparing to once again embark on a nationwide strike.

Notwithstanding the acceptance, McDonald said she was “disappointed” with the offer.

“By now you would’ve already gotten the report of what the offer is and what was accepted, I’m quite disappointed, but like everything else, it is what it is,” McDonald is recorded as saying in a circulated voice note.

Joint Services ranks accused of rape, robbery in Essequibo

TWO Joint Services ranks on the Essequibo Coast are being accused of raping a young lady on Saturday night and robbing her and her teenaged boyfriend.

According to reports from relatives, the young woman and her boyfriend had just purchased something to eat and were sitting on the pavilion where they were facing each other and speaking.

It is being reported that the men

appeared suddenly, accosted the couple and proceeded to rape the woman.

During the ordeal, the men reportedly demanded that the two hand over their valuables.

Family members said that the young man has been able to identify one of the suspects.

After the men were finished, they reportedly hurried out of the ground and ran up the road. They were, however, spotted by a security guard who

observed their suspicious pace while using the road, and shortly after, saw the two victims running from the ground. They related to the guard what took place and he immediately encouraged them to go to the police.

The young man reportedly then went home, awoke his family and recounted to them what had taken place.

At the police station, the family informed the police of the incident and even told them about the presence of

the men still in the area, but the police reportedly insisted that they cannot move until a statement of the occurrence was taken.

The relatives of the young man, however, went in search of the alleged perpetrators and reportedly spotted them running in beads of perspiration.

The parents of the teen questioned the men about their earlier act and they again began running farther up the road.

Teenage girls are becoming pregnant

THERE seems to be a number of circumstances surrounding teenage girls becoming pregnant and most of them are avoidable.

Motherhood is a big step and teenage girls are not ready, so if you have a teenage daughter you should talk to her about making sensible choices about her future. Teenagers need time and space to discover their true selves and their focus and purpose in life. There will be plenty of time to (find a life-long partner and then) experience the joys of motherhood in the future.

The words ‘peer pressure’ are often associated with teenage pregnancy. Some young people say they were influenced by their peers into having sexual intercourse…’I just wanted to fit in and be

like the others.’ Because of their changing hormones, teenagers may think their bodies are ready for sex and what might start out as ‘an attempt to please friends’ ends up as a pregnancy.

The pregnancy could have been avoided if measures were put in place by parents. Lack of parental guidance is one of the main reasons peer pressure is so effective. As lifestyles get busier and mobile phones and the internet become more distracting, many parents are overlooking their duties; where there should be interaction, guidance and monitoring from adults, young people are simply being left to their own ‘devices.’ (Speaking both literally and technologically) Teenage girls tend to become pregnant when they live in an environment

where very little is expected from them, academically, socially or otherwise; therefore, their sense of self-value and esteem is low. In households where most things are permissible, the teen might be introduced to and participate in sex, not really giving much thought to what she is doing with her young body -- that is, until she becomes pregnant.

Older more experienced boyfriends sometimes cajole their younger girlfriends into having sex. Not only is it illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of 16, but these young ad hoc relationships seldom stand the test of time; especially if the girl becomes pregnant and suddenly there is the added responsibility of feeding and raising a child.

Family breakdowns can cause a teenage girl to end up pregnant. Feelings of insecurity and abandonment may result in the teen searching for comfort and finding it—sexually; this is something she probably would not have done if she had had continuous parental support.

Society itself plays a part in encouraging teenage pregnancies. The indoctrination of our young minds by the worthless, degrading music on the minibuses and the suggestive, promiscuous advertising for ‘adult’ recreational activities on TV and posters can encourage carefree behaviour among young girls and they may engage in sexual activity before their time. Teenagers can gravitate towards the ‘fun’ and ‘naughty’ elements portrayed in the negative music and advertising that is really aimed at adults.

Lastly, the thoughtless act of sexual abuse contributes to teenage pregnancies.

There are a number of young mother’s aged 12 – 15, whose perpetrators’ should be in jail. Sometimes families remain tight-lipped about the person who impregnated the teen, because they have taken money as a bribe or due to shame and/or fear that the person would be jailed. Parents have a responsibility to their children to ensure that justice is carried out, never shield a perpetrator.

Parents, caregivers, grand-parents and/or trusted family members, could talk to teenagers about abstinence, contraception and safe sex, along with the importance of setting and achieving positive goals in their lives. Teachers,

coaches and all people in positions of authority, who interact w i t h children, could also speak to teenagers accordingly, offering sound advice; try not to judge them or give up on them, but guide them towards their potential. Information shared with teenagers is always significant, because young people need to be informed in order to make informed decisions.

Teenagers do think about sex and it doesn’t make any sense telling them not to, you cannot stop them from thinking.

What you could do, however, is make sure they have the correct information in the right context and that they are aware of the behaviours that are permissible during their adolescence and the ones that are not.

Parents, spend time with your teenage daughters, set good examples for them, and teach them to respect themselves.

Stay in tune with them and give them the attention they deserve; when parents show a timely and genuine interest in a young person’s life and development, the child is more likely to use their parents as role-models and take their advice.

GUYANA Teachers Union (GTU) General-Secretary Coretta McDonald said she is not motivated by politics but by the genuine welfare of teachers.

She offered the comments in light of a cartoon which appeared in the Kaieteur News suggesting that she is being influenced by the opposition on the teachers’ wages dispute The cartoon shows

GTU President Mark Lyte questioning McDonald’s intention to continue the teachers’ strike despite receiving “a good deal,” while McDonald was busy attending to the whispers of Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo.

In response, McDonald has admonished the public to “don’t be bothered” as she will continue to represent teachers despite attempts to discredit her intentions.

“The fact is that some people expect us to bury

our heads in the sand, but I will say to persons, I will continue to be Coretta McDonald. I am firmly grounded in trade union principles, trade union and moral principles and I will stand by those regardless of. I stood then and I will stand now,” she stated.

The GTU general-secretary went on to make known her confusion on why her efforts “for better conditions and better salaries” were being aligned to politics and more so, being aligned to a political party

Age boys start puberty ‘linked to mothers’ THE age at which boys begin puberty is linked to when their mothers started having periods, a study suggests.

Mothers who started earlier than their peers had sons who had armpit hair two and a half months earlier and acne and voices breaking two months earlier.

Their daughters, meanwhile, developed breasts six months earlier. The study, in the Human Reproduction journal, analysed data from nearly 16,000 Danish mothers and children.

One of the authors, Dr Nis Brix, of Aarhus University, Denmark, said: “Whenever a doctor meets a patient with delayed or early onset of puberty, the doctor obtains a family history.

“The relationship between the mother’s pubertal age and the son’s pubertal age has been taken as common knowledge but now our data from a large study confirms it.”

The age boys and girls start puberty has been gradually decreasing around the world.

In the UK, it is currently starting about one month earlier every decade. And the current average age is11 for girls and 12 for boys Experts put this down to improved health and nutrition in the industrialised world - but studies have also shown a link between obesity and the early onset of puberty.

In 2015, a study indicated early or late onset of puberty was linked to an increased risk of diabetes, obesity, early menopause, and cardiovascular disease.

In girls, an early puberty was defined as starting between eight and 11, while a late puberty started between 15 and 19. In boys, a normal puberty started between nine

An American study in January suggested early puberty in girls was also linked to increased likelihood of mental health problems during adolescence and into adulthood.

Wash your hands, stay healthy

WASHING your hands is one of the important things you can do to keep from getting sick.

However, as the world celebrates Global Handwashing Day today, recent studies still show that 97 per cent of the time, persons fail to properly clean their hands before meals.

This 2018 study was conducted by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), contracted with RTI International and its subcontractor North Carolina State University (NCSU).

Some of the areas it outlined in which many still fall short include washing hands for the necessary 20 seconds; drying hands with a clean towel and wetting hands with water.

Meanwhile, the Global Handwashing Partnership’s (GHP’s) 2017 Annual Report states that only around 19 per cent of people worldwide wash their hands after contact with excreta.

In addition, access to handwashing facilities ranges from nearly 100 per cent in some countries, to less than 10 per cent in others According to the Center for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC), hand- washing can prevent one in three diarrhoea-related illnesses and one in five

respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.

The CDC recommends utilising bar or liquid soap, whether antibacterial or plain, and the use of an alcohol-based sanitiser with at least 60 per cent alcohol when soap and water are not available.

Disregard this and germs from unwashed hands can enter the body through the eyes, mouth and nose; also, through unclean surfaces such as door knobs and objects such as toys.

Germs from unwashed hands can even enter food and drinks, causing persons to become sick when consumed.

As such, Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) recommends that in order to clean hands well and protect against infections, persons should take a few measures.

These include wetting your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold); turning off the tap and applying soap; lathering your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails; and scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Washing your hands properly takes about as long as singing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice; rinse your hands well under clean, running water; dry your hands with a single-use towel

HANDWASHING: Recommended steps by Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) for proper handwashing or air dry them; and use a towel to turn off faucet.

Coupled with this, the Infection Prevention and Control Manual of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) reminds: “Avoid using hot water, as repeated exposure to hot water may increase the risk of dermatitis.”

According to the CDC, one should wash his/her hands before eating; preparing food; treating a cut or wound or caring for someone sick and after using

the bathroom; changing diapers; touching an animal; touching garbage and blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

In 2008, October 15 was designated Global Handwashing Day with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.

It is being celebrated this year under the theme ‘Clean Hands – A recipe for health.’

Karasabai Primary now have secondary department

Almost 200 students in the South Pakaraimas are now receiving access to secondary education closer to their communities

By Lisa Hamilton ALMOST 200 students in the South Pakaraimas are now receiving access to secondary education closer to the communities, with the recent establishment of a secondary department at the Karasabai Primary school.

Previously, many of the children would have to travel great distances and stay in dormitories to attend the Annai and St. Ignatius Secondary Schools where, over the years, overcrowding had become an issue.

However, to remedy the situation, representatives from the Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) area, Marlon Edwards and Ronald Lee-Bing met with senior government officials.

“They had a plan to put in place a secondary department at Karasabai Primary school, which was to be done early next year, but because we met with them and explained the urgency of the situation, they brought it forward,” Edwards said.

Now a secondary department exists at Karasabai Primary which began functioning in September and now helps to relieve the congestion at the two schools.

Lee- Bing told this newspaper that students passing the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) Examination, who would have had to previously leave their homes, now have a more favourable option.

“Because of the opening of the secondary department in Karasabai, we’ve been able to ac-

commodate 191 students now benefiting from this initiative,” he said.

Edwards added that along with students from Karasabai, those from neighbouring villages such as Tiger Pond are also attending and parents are now able to save financially and see their children every day.

Lee- Bing said, too, that some teachers who are native to the village and who had been previously stationed in Annai and St. Ignatius, have now received the opportunity to return home to teach in the new department.

“It’s a big achievement, because the residents of Karasabai they have been pleading for something to happen in regards to a secondary school for so many years; and now they have gotten one,” Edwards said.

Also relating to the youth, the men were able to assist several young people in furthering their education through training programmes in some of the country’s main towns.

These locations include the Charles Rosa School of Nursing in Linden and E. R. Burrowes School of Art in Georgetown, funding for which came from their own pockets or scholarships through the government.

Edwards explained their motivation, stating: “We look out for young people to see how we can assist them if they want to further their studies; or if they want a job, we try our best to see how we can assist them.”

tor-General José Graziano da Silva said.

“Changing the legal and institutional frameworks is fundamental to change the productive structure and ensure good nutrition for all,” he told representatives gath-

ered at the annual forum of the Civil Society Mechanism (MSC) - a vehicle for the participation of non-governmental actors in policy formulation at the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

“We often focus on increasing production, which will need to adapt to climate change and be more sustainable. But we must also focus on changing food systems and in adapting the legal and institutional frameworks that condition them and this is where we are more behind,”

This requires the adoption of a multisectoral approach that involves not only governments, but also international organizations, civil society, the private sector and citizens in general, Graziano da Silva said, pointing to the value of the CFS as an inclusive platform for a diversity of actors.

The FAO Director-General stressed that, in the last three years, hunger and malnutrition are on the rise again and that we are moving

away from the commitments adopted with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Latest estimates show that, 821 million people suffer from hunger and, at the same time, we are witnessing an epidemic of overweight and obesity throughout the world. The proportion of obese people in the world has gone up from 11.7 percent in 2012 to 13.3 percent in 2016, reaching 672 million adults.

Hunger is mainly experienced by people living in specific areas, such as those rav-

aged by conflicts, droughts and extreme poverty; yet obesity is much more widespread and it is increasing all around the world. In particular, the increase in obesity growth is “absolutely out of control,” Graziano da Silva said, noting that 8 out the 20 countries where the problem is growing fastest are located in Africa.

The FAO Director-General urged for a focus on “the superstructure that conditions production” of food, including institutions, the academic sector and research.

Graziano da Silva underscored that collective efforts towards healthy diets must include the creation of norms on labelling and the banning of some harmful ingredients, the introduction of nutrition in the school curriculum and the adoption of methods to avoid food loss and waste.

He also emphasized the importance of establishing trade agreements that do not hamper access to locally grown, fresh and nutritious food from family farming.

“With hunger and malnutrition on the rise and the multilateral system questioned by some states that try to impose their logic of ‘whoever pays more gets to decide more’, this is a very important moment of reflection for civil society and indigenous people,” Graziano da Silva said.

–– says portability of social security schemes need to be looked at in the Caribbean THE protection and well-being of workers and elders are often the primary focus of government and labour organisations, but the efficiency of services offered, especially in the Caribbean, could be improved if existing social security systems are reformed.

Although when compared globally, the Caribbean has well-developed social security structures, the viability of the existing social security schemes needs to be examined, said the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Director for Decent Work in the Caribbean, Claudia Coenjaerts, during an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle.

“It depends on who is covered and how is the coverage…for instance, the public and private sectors utilise social security systems, but persons in the informal economy are often not covered,” said Coenjaerts.

She added that the Caribbean needs to assess whether the benefits are adequate and improve the existing schemes.

The director advised the Caribbean to look closely at the schemes, because they are not adequate and do not cover all workers.

A social security system is defined as a federally funded service and payment to help support the needy, the aged, and the temporarily unemployed, as well as providing support for needy, dependent, disabled, or neglected children, rehabilitation for the disabled, and a host of other social services.

Coenjaerts said all actuarial studies have found that social services need to be reformed and should address issues such

Studies have proven that in some countries the elderly population continues to grow, while the working population remains stable.

In addition, Coenjaerts said, while the Caribbean has done well on freedom of movement, the Region has not as well on freedom of services.

“That is something we need to look at if we want the region to develop further…

we need to use each other, especially in the area of work…There should be portability of social security schemes,” she said, adding that portable schemes would allow persons to access social services in whichever Caribbean country they travel to.

This issue was raised by the ILO at the level of CAICOM but, making schemes portable continue to be difficult because all the schemes have their own bases.

The ILO has however been working and engaging social security institutions and would continue to do more and provide technical assistance if approached by Governments and institutions, said Director Coenjaerts.

Evident of local challenges with social security systems was a report that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) recorded a loss of $414 million at the end of June 2018.

The NIS was nearing a crisis stage. In 2011, the fund experienced its first deficit of $371 million and was expected to incur a larger deficit in 2012.

With assets of just over two times annual expenditure, the entire fund will be exhausted in less than 10 years if contribution rate increases and benefit reforms are not made immediately.

Finance Controller of NIS, Jacquelyn Scotland, said that on June 30, the funds stood at $31.1 billion but the company had still recorded a loss of $414 million.

Over the years, the NIS has been facing challenges because of the imbalance between the collections and payments.

The Scheme believes that it could still avoid the bleak outlook that was presented in the eighth actuarial report of the National Insurance Fund in 2011.

“It is the first time the safari is going to Brazil,” Phoenix said and noted that this is significant, because the two countries have enjoyed both “strategic” and “fruitful” relations over the years. “There’s quite a lot to celebrate and so what we want to do with this occasion is to ensure that the public is aware of what is happening. This is the kind of activity that brings your public on board, because it’s linking our peoples,” Ambassador Phoenix said.

She also said, “It is a people-to-people contact kind of activity.”

Managing-Director of Rainforest Tours, Frank Singh, highlighted that this is the first year that the

safari will actually cross Guyana’s borders and said that participants from 10 countries, including the UK and Germany, have already signed up to be part of the adventure. The safari will accommodate 30 vehicles and so far, 20 have already been booked.

Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Brazil, Minister Paulo Borda Silos noted, “I think that this initiative is one of the finest that we have developed, because it gives people access, in an indirect way, to diplomacy and they see that diplomacy is practical and has fun aspects.” He too hailed the 50 years of fruitful relations between the two countries as he reminded of the areas of cooperation that the two countries share.

Silos further added: “We hope that next year and over the next few years we can continue improving the relationship between Brazil and Guyana and think of more inclusive and people-friendly events such as this, so that we can put the people in the context of diplomacy and in the relationship between Brazil and Guyana.”

Lawyer turns tables on prosecution –in resisting arrest, assault case TWO brothers appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday, after being slapped with a series of charges.

Hernando Razak, 18, was charged for resisting arrest and assault on October 8, 2018 at Albouystown, while Police Lance Corporal Desmond Nicholson was executing his duties. The teen pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on $7,000 bail.

aldo, was also released on $7,000 bail after pleading not guilty to assaulting Lance Corporal Nicholas to prevent him from arresting his brother on the same day, and making use of threating behaviour and obstructiion.

The two teens were represented by attorney-at-law Latchmi Rahamat, who told the court that contrary to the charges, it is her clients who are being attacked and harassed by the police.

The chief magistrate adjourned the matter until October 17.

CIOG fetes over 450 children

THE Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) feted more than 450 orphans and vulnerable children from many of the orphanages across Guyana through a fun day held at the CIOG’s Thomas Lands location.

The children hailed from many of the orphanages in Guyana and from the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, according to Tasneem Akbar, who had oversight for this year’s event. She related that the 450 children, who are part of the CIOG’s orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) programme, assembled for a day filled with enjoyment.

The event started earlier in the morning, when First Lady Sandra Granger shared kind words with all of the children during an opening ceremony. After that ceremony, the children were left to enjoy as much as possible, all the attractions in the compound-- until of course, it was time to eat. “The children don’t experience this on a daily basis and if once a year we can do something for them, it is our duty to provide for these children as well,” Akbar said, while highlighting, “This Fun Day is the largest activity for the CIOG.” In Islamic scripture, she explained that it is a duty of Muslims that no matter how little, if they can do something for these vulnerable children, they should. “It’s a great deed in the eyes of Allah,” Tasneem related.

City Constabulary not provided with uniforms

RANKS of the City Constabulary for the past few years have been made to buy their own uniforms, a move which has not been sitting well with at least one rank, who reported the matter on Friday, when he appeared before the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the operations at City Hall.

Appearing before the CoI being chaired by Justice (ret’d) Cecil Kennard, City Constabulary Lance Corporal Quacey Baveghems protested the non- provision of uniforms, along with the non-remittance of his credit union dues, National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contributions and other tax deductions.

“The City Constabulary is supposed to provide us with uniform for us to execute our functions across the city, for the past four to five years, ranks of the City Constabulary have to sew their own uniforms, instead of the council providing it,” Baveghems said.

Baveghems, who is also the rank who was dismissed and then reinstated after witnessing one of his fellow lance corporals in a sexual act with a detained minor, also gave the commission a recount of the situation as it played out and what he termed to be the injustice that he had suffered.

The rank accused of sexual assault, Clifton Pellew, is currently on trial for rape of the minor.

On August 22 last year, Baveghems discovered Pellew in the act, and according to him, he immediately reported the matter to an assistant superintendent and Chief Constable Andrew Foo and was told to submit a statement, which he did.

Pellew was eventually dismissed and so was Baveghems. Baveghems testified that in October of that year he received a dismissal letter signed by Town Clerk Royston King.

“Reason for my dismissal I saw was that I did not take action, and I failed to make a diary entry. There was no hearing, I was not given a fair hearing,” Baveghems said. Given that the town clerk had no authority to dismiss him, Baveghems subsequently wrote the Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan and President David Granger, which saw him being reinstated and sent on administrative leave.

However, the accused, Pellew, was also reinstated and sent on administrative leave. Baveghems was eventually returned to duty earlier this year.

Impressive John retains Kadir Mohamed Memorial road race title --cops an ounce of gold

By Michelangelo Jacobus INITIALLY unsure of his presence at the seventh annual Kadir Mohamed Memorial Cycling Road Race, last year’s champion, Jamaul John, made it back-to-back victories by copping this year’s event in impressive fashion.

He was part of a three-man breakaway group which included Briton ‘Screechie’ John and Andre ‘Padlock’ Green; together, the trio made good their escape from the peloton after 30 miles and never looked back.

On the homestretch, it was a sprint between Greene and John, but the latter was just too strong and crossed the finish line at least two cycle lengths ahead of Greene, to retain his title and the winner’s prize of an ounce of gold..

Speaking to Chronicle Sport, John revealed that he had only arrived back in Guyana two days prior to yesterday’s race, as he wanted to defend his title. He next has his eyes on the Digicel Cancer Awareness cycling meet, set for next weekend.

John also revealed that yesterday’s race went the way he wanted it to. “Racing overseas has really helped me as well; the competition level is different and that helped a lot” he posited.

Briton John had to settle for third and Curtis Dey came in fourth, ahead of Christopher Griffith (fifth) and Andrew Hicks (sixth).

John’s winning time was three hours, 15 minutes and one second.

Ottley and Cottoy bundle out Scorpions for 82 to give CCC victory BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – The Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners bundled out the Jamaica Scorpions for the lowest total of this year’s Regional Super50 competition on their way to registering a comfortable six-wicket victory in their Group B encounter here at the Three W’s Oval yesterday.

Entering the contest as the only remaining unbeaten team, the Scorpions were routed for a lowly 82, with Khesan Ottley and Keroy Cottoy being the main destroyers, sharing seven wickets between them.

So disappointing were the efforts of the Scorpions’ batsmen, only three managed to score in double figures.

The Marooners then easily reached their target, scoring 84 for four off 17.5 overs.

There was very little sign that the Scorpions’ batting was headed for such a collapse when John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood were busy adding 51 runs for the second wicket.

But in a dramatic twist, they lost their last nine wickets for just 30 runs.

Marooners captain Carlos Brathwaite started the slide by dismissing Campbell for the top score of 34, which was laced with seven bound-

aries, to leave the Scorpions 52 for two.

One run later Andre McCarthy was run out, before Ottley bowled Blackwood for 16 to leave the score 59 for four.

OFF-SPINNERS Leon Andrews and Damian Waldron combined for nine wickets as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) humbled the University of Guyana on the final day of their Noble House Seafoods second-division, two-day cricket match yesterday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.

Andrews grabbed six wickets, while Waldron, who took eight in the first innings, bagged another three, as the army restricted the university cricketers for 71 in their second innings before chasing down 13 runs for victory.

Although GDF were ahead after the first day’s play, an early result did not seem forthcoming; but it did, as 12 wickets fell within the space of a few hours.

Since he wants to sit with his lawyers now, I allowed him exemption from the ICC Meeting.”

THE Georgetown Eco Champs, a developmental team, got off to a winning start in the GCA Friends of Cricket 100-overs U-17 Tournament yesterday after a 48-run win against the Transport Sports Club at the Gandhi Youth Organisation ground.

The Eco Champs, made up of players from different clubs in the Georgetown Cricket Association, reached 207 in 33.4 overs, due to some solid middle-order batting and indiscipline bowling from their opponents.

Seventy-seven runs came via the extra route, while number four batsman Dwayne Dick, 21 (5x4s), number five batsman Lenox Philadelphia, 22 (1x4, 2x6s), number six batsman Bryion Bowen, 25 (4x4s), and number seven batsman Daniel Roberts, 23 (4x4s) played a few shots.

Off-spinner Alvin Mohabir and leg-spinner, Riyad Latif, took three wickets each, while medium pacer, Trevon Charles, finished with two.

When Transport batted, they were pegged back early due to line and length bowling, but the middle and lower order attempted to make a game of it, with number five batsman, R. Benjamin, 19 (3x4s and 1x6), number seven batsman Charles, 38 (3X4s, 3X6s) and number nine batsman, Jeffrey Blair, 36 (7x4s) firing from all cylinders. The batting and bowling equipment were donated by former West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his manager Adjodah Persaud while the roller was donated by the George Subraj Foundation, the Zara Foundation and Jay”s All State Insurance.

The roller, a 10-ton capacity machine was delivered and has commenced preparing the ground for major upcoming activities. The club is expected to receive a John Deere D170 mower along with collecting mechanism, a hitch and cart as part of the donations.

Tony Subraj said that his family and the Zara team are pleased to assist in the development of the club. He urged the club to ensure the proper usage, storage and maintenance of the equipment.

The other donor Jay Jainarine, who is also a very prominent USA-based Guyanese businessman with an All State Insurance Agency, has been contributing to the ECC, having assisted recently with the outdoor kitchen and dining area. He endorsed the sentiments of Subraj and added that he is also pleased to be part of the development of the club.

Already this year the club has been the recipient of other substantial support with Regal Stationery donating covers for the pitch and cricket gear worth over $1M and Comfort Sleep towards the extension of the dressing room.

Skipper Holder blames Windies top order for series defeat HYDERABAD, India, (CMC) – Captain Jason Holder has laid the blame for West Indies’ series defeat at the feet of the top order, conceding their lack of runs put too much pressure on the remainder of the line-up during the calamitous twomatch rubber against India.

The Caribbean slide slumped to a 10-wicket loss inside three days of the second Test on Sunday, after they were dismissed for 127 in their first innings – their joint lowest-ever total on Indian soil.

West Indies failed to make 200 in either innings of the opening Test in Rajkot last week when they were beaten by an innings and 272 runs, also in three days.

“I think our top order has really let us down in the recent past. They haven’t been getting the runs that we’ve been looking for. Anybody knows that,” Holder lamented.

“In any cricket, you’re

asking your top five-six batters to get the bulk of the runs. It hasn’t been that way for us. We’ve been heavily reliant on our middle to lower half, which is not ideal in any circumstances. So it’s just a matter for the guys in the top five to put their hands up and come to the party.”

He continued: “It’s not a matter of guys having technical deficiencies, per se, it’s just the processes at the particular time may not be the best one, and especially our younger players really need to understand that patience is the name of the game in Test cricket.

“You’ve got to build an innings – the greatest of players will always tell you that. It’s not an arena where you can just come and just beat the ball around and blast.”

Roston Chase was the star of the Windies batting down the order, hitting 106 in the first innings here to follow up his 53 in the first innings in Rajkot, and end the series with

an average 46.

However, the usually prolific Kraigg Brathwaite scraped just 26 runs in four innings while Shimron Hetmyer made just 50 and Shai Hope, 91.

Yadav propels India to series sweep of Windies HYDERABAD, India, ( C M C ) – We s t I n d i e s were bundled out for their joint-lowest ever total on Indian soil as they slumped to a 10-wicket defeat inside three days here Sunday, to suffer a 2-0 whitewash and extend their agonising 16year wait for a Test victory against the hosts.

The Caribbean side dared to dream when they bowled India out for 367 to limit the first innings deficit to just 56 runs but their batsmen then produced wretched display to crumble for a wretched 127 in their second innings – their lowest score in India in 31 years.

They were undone by Man-of-the-Match speedster Umesh Yadav who bowled superbly to claim four for 45 to end with career-best match figures of 10 for ` 133.

He received excellent support from left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja who picked up three for 12 and off-spinner Ravi Ashwin who finished with two for 24.

Sunil Ambris top-scored with 38 and Shai Hope got 28 but West Indies never recovered from six for two in the fourth over after losing both openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell without scoring.

Left with a paltry target of 72, India romped to victory late in the day with openers Prithvi Shaw and Lokesh Rahul both stroking 33 not out, to keep West Indies without a Test win on Indian soil in 24 years.

What began as a day filled with possibilities for the tourists ended in calamity at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, as West Indies failed to capitalise on a clinical bowling effort which saw them claim the last six Indian wickets for just 59 runs.

Captain Jason Holder spearheaded the attack, bowling superbly to finish

with five for 56 – his fifth career five-wicket haul and third in four innings.

Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel claimed three for 107 while left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, in his first Test in nearly three years, ended with two for 84.

Opting for the new ball at the start, Holder and Gabriel struck early, combining to remove three Indian wickets for 14 runs in the space of 33 balls.

Holder knocked over Ajinkya Rahane for 80 in the third over after the righthander had added just five to his overnight score, caught

by Hope at gully off one that bounced sharply.

Two balls later, Holder brought one back to trap Jadeja lbw without scoring and Gabriel accounted for Rishabh Pant three overs later for 92, caught at point

by Shimron Hetmyer after adding seven to his overnight score.

Ashwin then frustrated the Windies with 35 in nearly two hours at the crease, before he was last out – bowled by Gabriel just before lunch.

Starting their second innings after the interval, West Indies’ capitulation began from the second ball, when Brathwaite lazily clipped a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Pant off Umesh, without a run on the board.

Powell followed in the fourth over, edging a defensive prod at Ashwin to be caught low down at slip by Rahane, with Windies on six

for two.

Hope and Hetmyer then featured in the best stand of the innings as they added 39 for the third wicket to see their side virtually through the next hour.

While Hope faced 42 balls and struck four four fours, the left-hander Hetymer stroked three boundaries in his 29-ball stay at the crease.

On the stroke of the drinks break, however, Hetmyer lost the plot, charging and swinging wildly at Kuldeep and peeling a simple catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at point.

With no addition to the score in the next over, Hope edged one from Jadeja that turned and was taken by Rahane at slip, leaving the Windies on 45 for four an hour after lunch.

Without a score of note in his comeback series, Ambris tried to make his mark, carving out four fours off 95 balls in nearly two hours at the crease.

He tried to revive the innings in a 23-run fifth wicket stand with Roston Chase but the first innings century-maker managed only six this time before he was bowled off the pads by Umesh, about 14 minutes before tea.

With two runs added at 70 for six, Shane Dowrich had his off-stump uprooted by Umesh off the inside edge for a first-ball ‘duck’, leaving the Windies tottering on 76 for six at the interval.

Ambris and Holder (19) delayed the inevitable after

tea, adding 38 for the seventh wicket to keep India wicket-less for nearly 40 minutes.

But Holder feathered a catch behind off Jadeja to end the stand and the last four wickets fell for 19 runs as the

end came swiftly.

AIBA executive committee loses case against Ninvalle

...“A man forced against his will is of the same opinion still” STEVE NINVALLE, president of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), who also sits as an executive committee member on the International Boxing Association (AIBA), has had his provisional suspension by the amateur boxing world-governing body lifted.

With Senior Counsel K. Juman Yassin and Teni Housty as his attorneys, Ninvalle’s provisional suspension which was instituted in July and lifted on October 9, stemmed from his alleged violation of Articles 6.4 and 6.11 in AIBA’s code of ethics.

Ninvalle was also accused of attempting to organise and establish a de facto Caribbean Federation, among others, and the executive committee had sought to have him suspended.

According to documents seen by Chronicle Sport, Ninvalle, who is expected to contest the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Presidency on November 3 in Moscow, Russia, had strongly disagreed with the selection by the AMBC President of three representatives from Caribbean National Federations to develop a presentation for the AIBA executive committee meeting in July 2018 in Abu

Dhabi.

The presentation was intended to examine the Region’s development needs. The document alleged that Mr. Ninvalle was upset that he was not consulted by the AMBC President prior to making the appointments and therefore

applied pressure to other Caribbean nations not to support the presentation.

However, Ninvalle denied all allegations levelled against him, and argued that the emails submitted as exhibits to the complaint failed to set forth facts that support the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Barry Jones Disciplinary Panel Chair wrote on October 9, 2018, that the panel “do not believe that Mr. Ninvalle’s intentions were with malice toward AIBA. Rather, they were generated by an overzealous position to advance his perceived interests of the Caribbean as a whole. Pursuant to 6.11 of the Code, the DC has discretion on the type of sanction to impose. We do not find that Mr. Ninvalle’s actions and statements warrant continued suspension.”

Jones further added that “therefore, the Disciplinary Committee issues this decision of reprimand as a strong caution to Mr. Ninvalle to avoid further efforts to form a Caribbean quasi-federation or intimidate and pressure national federations

In the first game, Colaaco got the better of FE Pollard 1-0, thanks to Jerimiah Parks in the 30th minute while Enterprise won via walk-over from Redeemer. West Ruimveldt also won via walk-over from St Stephen’s.

Mocha-Arcadia were victors over Tucville via a 2-1 margin, thanks to a brace from Mathew Murray (21st and 25th) while Emanuel Tinch (23rd) scored the lone Tucville goal.

J.E Burnham also overcame Den Amstel by that margin with Sahle Butts 20th and 30th

minutes strikes cancelling out Keshawn Humphrey’s 17th minute goal.

St. Pius were 5-1 winners in their match against Victoria with Chance Niles scoring thrice (1st, 2nd and 29th) and Kaden Wellington netting twice (7th and 10th). Victoria had Yance Lucas (30th) on the scoresheet.
