Big Day?

Get In Shape!!

As I sit here and roll through all of the reasons and motivating factors that women come to the gym, there are a few quotes that pop into my mind… •“The doctor told me I had to” •“Going to the beach in 2 months… HELP ME!” •“Just had a baby… now I gotta shed the pounds” •“My husband’s losing weight and getting in shape, I gotta keep up!” But the number one reason I see panic on a women’s face is, “My BIG DAY is coming!! I have to FIT THE DRESS!” Don’t feel alone or without options if that’s you. The ever expanding field of fitness and wellness has not only embraced motivating factors like this, but offers a lot of targeted classes to accommodate you. There are time sen-

sitive 4, 6, and 8 week sessions out there so you can plan the training accordingly to “peak” at the right time. There are specialty class offerings like the City Club Bridal Bootcamp and DEXercise Women’s Fitness at the City Club that will help you reach your specific goals. There are even pre and post-natal pilates and personal training sessions that target that specific time in your life. So whatever your motivating factor is, no that there are options for you! By looking around you may be surprised what you see when it comes to targeted specialty training packages designed specifically for your needs…especially the BIG DAY!

Jenci and Cory, high school sweethearts were spending a lovely weekend in New Orleans in March of 2009 with their son Adrian. Right after breakfast, Cory took Jenci and Adrian to Jackson Square where the gardens were in full bloom. In a scenic moment, Cory got down on one knee and with no hesitation popped the question in front of St. Louis Cathedral. Jenci eagerly said yes and began to share the great news with everyone. The couple decided on City Club in River Ranch for their wedding day. Jenci worked with Hannah Trahan and the team to create the menu and details of the day she had always dreamed. On October 19th 2013, right before sunset at the Carriage House Courtyard at River Ranch in front of 250 guest which included close family, friends and colleagues, Jenci and Cory said I Do! Following the wedding, a reception was held at the City Club Fleur de Lis Ballroom where guests dined on food prepared by the City Club chefs and danced the night away to music provided by Souled Out. Jenci and Cory were sent off with a display of sparklers and were whisked away to prepare for their honeymoon at the Sandals in St. Lucia.

It’s hard to describe getting married where you work. I suppose it felt like getting married in your back yard and hosting the reception in your living room - but I’ve never been in a living room quite like the Historic Calcasieu Marine National Bank’s grand hall. When the owners of Empire of the Seed first set foot in the bank, they knew its stunning architecture could host any occasion, but the Calcasieu Marine National Bank Building truly excels as a wedding venue. Luckily for me and Southwest Louisiana, Rick and Donna Richard’s vision to turn it into a timeless reception hall has been tangible since 2009. Since my hire date in 2011, I’ve seen 300+ events, mostly weddings, so unfortunately for my husband, I had big plans from day one! And I truthfully did plan it – nothing cookie cutter here! As if the stateliness of the building isn’t enough, the flexibility Empire offers is unsurpassed. I chose my own caterer, baker, florist, decorator, entertainment, lighting professionals, photographer, and so on, to create a truly unique event in which every detail was either handpicked or created by “The Lashers.” Imagining the number of loans dispersed since the bank’s opening in 1928, it is easy to get carried away with thoughts of how many families in our area got their start here. And now families are beginning again in the property, but in an exceptionally new way. We get to say we made history at the Calcasieu Marine National Bank, and that’s pretty profound.

Tips For a First

Bridal Gown Appointment Your first bridal gown boutique visit is sure to be very memorable and exciting!

26 | Weddings With Style

1 ŠJaneen Elaine Photography

This will be one of the first appointments where you will truly feel like a bride for the first time. Our great state of Louisiana is filled with the best bridal shops around, filled with consultants ready to put you in that perfect gown. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you along the way to find the perfect wedding gown.

Schedule appointment early: Most wedding gowns take 6-9 months to arrive. So as soon as your date is set, start shopping!

2

Know your price range: Do the math and know exactly how much you are able to spend. When you arrive at the bridal shop let the consultant know your budget so they can help you choose from that price range. www.weddingswithstyle.net

3

Hair and Makeup: Arrive at the boutique with light makeup (so your foundation and lipstick won’t end up the dresses you try on) and your hair resembling what you envision for your wedding day (nothing to fancy, just to give you an idea)

4

Bring a close family member or friend: We suggest 2 or 3 people that will be supportive during this process.

5

Inform the consultant when and where your wedding will take place: This will help them find the perfect style gown.

www.weddingswithstyle.net

6

Trust your bridal consultant: Keeping an open mind to different style dresses may bring a surprise along the way. The style dress you thought may not work for you might just be the perfect dress.

Bridal gown shopping should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Remember to relax and take in this special time in your life. Let your heart be your guide and you are sure to find the perfect gown.

Looking Good

9/5/2012 9:46:45 AM

Just as the silhouettes and necklines have changed for Bridal Gowns from strapless with full ball skirts, to V-neckline on a mermaid gown, Sabrina neckline with fit and flair skirt, and cap-sleeves with A-line all lace gown, so has the finishing touch of jewelry changed to keep up with what is NEW! A strapless, sweetheart, fitted simple gown needs the extra punch of

great drama earrings and perhaps a chunky necklace. That will never change; but, with the added lace 28 | Weddings With Style

www.weddingswithstyle.net

or beading enhancing a V-neckline, often a more delicate earring and bracelet are called for. A heavily beaded Sabrina neckline needs just the finishing touch of an elegant drop earring with pearls and sparkle. Influenced by “The Great Gatsby,” the newest “LOOK” incorporates a hint of soft color from warm gold to delicate pink, or pale blue add just a touch of whimsy and charm. Whatever your finished total look is – experiment a little - remember this is Your Dream Wedding! Best Wishes! great. Your catch-phrase as you plan? “Appropriate for the occasion.” What works in a grand hotel ballroom may not work in a garden. What works in a wedding party with two bridesmaids may not work in a wedding party with ten.

Bridesmaids, rule number one:

Wear what the bride says. Period. It is not about you. No one will notice your arms. No one will notice your hips. Everyone will notice a miserable scowl. If the bride decrees her bridesmaids will wear the same dress in the same color, it is your responsibility as a bridesmaid to be flexible.

The bride also needs to be sensi-

tive to her bridesmaids. Today, the most fashionable brides often choose an array of styles or hues of a dress, or ballskirt and sweater set, for their attendants. Either gives bridesmaids options to personalize their look and look their best. Be sensitive to finances also, along with figure problems. Surprise your bridesmaids with a wonderful accessory. What a lovely way to say, “thank you” for helping to make the day perfect.

Be sensitive. Be flexible. Be

appropriate. Remember your manners. Remember your wedding etiquette for a day that is perfectly, tastefully, elegantly, and most importantly, uniquely yours. www.weddingswithstyle.net

Lake Tahoe 42 | Weddings With Style

www.weddingswithstyle.net

Lake Tahoe both Nevada and California is world renowned for a great mixture of terrains, scenery, resorts, nightlife, and quality of snow. People from all over the world travel to Tahoe every year to experience skiing, snowboarding, and backcountry skiing and shoeing for themselves. With several resorts to chose from, casino’s and gambling on the Nevada side, and outlets, shopping and fine dining on the California side, South Lake Tahoe, paired with the beautiful scenery in absolutely every direction, it is pretty hard for any vacationer to loose. One of the most highly regarded resorts is Heavenly Resort who claims to be “Lake Tahoe’s premier winter playground.” Heavenly is the largest resort in California, but is bordering Nevada and Lake Tahoe making the possibilities for fun threefold. Heavenly is not only the largest vertical drop in California (3,500 feet) but also the owner of Lake Tahoe’s tallest summit (10,067). The mountain, at Heavenly, has 95 different and diverse trails that cover all levels of skiing ability and thrill seeking with access from their 30 lifts, nine of which are high speed. The resort also offers a wide array of skiing schools, clinics and services to make your day perfect. The NorthStar resort at Tahoe is a unique experience in ski resorts. It has a village full of restaurants, stores, ice rink, as well as the home of a great run for beginners or for pros to warm up on! Along with the Village Run, Northstar has six other attractions to chose from. Mt. Rose ski resort boasts Tahoe’s highest elevation point at 8,260 feet and being the closest to Reno, Nevada, the nearest airport to Lake Tahoe. Mt. Rose offers 1,200 acres of powder and the new Chutes has added over 200 acres of steep, 1500 feet of vertical drop at 40-55 degrees, for the experienced skiers enjoyment. Kirkwood Resort offers the intermediate skier the most options on the more than 65 trails, over 50%. They also offer beginning, advanced and expert choices on their 2,300 acres of skiable terrain. One of the most distinctive things about the Kirwood Resort is the many unique and interesting classes and tours. They have a backcountry guided tour, a snowboarding tour, several different skiing tours, as well as classes and clinics for skiers and boarders of all ages. Alpine Meadows is proud of their 2,400 acres of patrolled, skiable terrain. It has over 100 runs that encompass all skill levels. They offer many different skiing and snowboarding classes and not just the basics, but private out of bound tours and beginner classes that they teach using the Direct-To-Parallel program. Squaw Valley, USA is one of the largest Tahoe resorts having over 4,000 acres of terrain. Over “70% of the mountain’s terrain” is for the beginner and moderate skier and/or snowboarder. This is a huge amount of space for someone to explore. They have all sorts of terrain parks with half pipes, jumps, and rails. They also have racing services. Squaw Valley offers classes in skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, night skiing, and everything in between.

At One&Only Le Saint Géran, Mauritian influences reign supreme. The resort’s relaxed and discreet luxury is complemented by service that is attentive, yet unobtrusive. Here, terraced and balconied rooms all face out privately to the Indian Ocean. Under the calm sway of thousands of coconut palms, immaculate gardens run down to the edge of the coral-sand beach, which seemlessly wraps the peninsula for over a mile. The sheltered lagoon provides calm waters for an array of water sports accessible within steps and idyllic for adults and children alike. Deft skills dispense sublime calm and confidence at the spa, a discreet sanctuary with its own private lap pool. The lush Gary Player 9-hole golf course situated in the resort’s grounds has its own Golf Academy and clubhouse. Under the sway of coconut palms with barefoot toes in the sand along a pristine shoreline, One&Only Le Saint Géran welcomes celebrations of marriage. On the beach or at the authentically designed Rasoi by Vineet overlooking the lagoon, the resort hosts weddings of unimagined romance and style. From Inception To Reception

Whether it’s A Garden Barbecue or A Grand Gala For 300, The Key To A Great Wedding Reception Comes Down To Three Words: Location, Location, Location. So you have the ring, you’ve decided on the general area where you want the wedding to be held and you’re ready to start planning. What now? One of the first and most important wedding tasks that a couple must do is choose their wedding reception hall. You will want to choose a wedding venue that suits your wedding style. But rest assured: Whether you’re a nature lover, a modernist or a hopeless romantic, there’s a wedding site for you. Find Your Style. One of the best ways to begin is by asking yourself what kind of mood you want to create for your big day. Question whether you envision a casual or elegant reception. Couples can determine their style by paying attention to their daily life. There is no reason to give up what you love on your big day; let your personal style shine on this most important day. www.weddingswithstyle.net

First Impressions

So what exactly should you look for in a reception site? You should be looking for the same sorts of things you looked for in your mate -- charm, personality and depth. Make an appointment and plan to spend at least an hour at each event space. It’s best to visit each venue around the actual hours of your event – it will allow you to see how the space looks naturally lit. When you begin checking out potential sites, note how each location makes you feel the instant you walk in; whether it’s relaxed, formal and/or sophisticated. Pick a venue with a view. What will your guests look at when

they’re not gazing at you or smiling for the photographer? Exceptional locations are always a feast for the eyes. Look at the decor or architectural details: an amazing crystal chandelier as the room’s centerpiece will add that something extra to your reception site. If you’re considering a certain theme and color palette for your wedding, take that into consideration as well. The walls, carpets, chairs and curtains shouldn’t clash with your wedding’s theme. One way to keep stress levels down is to pick a reception facility that can cater to many or all of your needs.

Edible Favors!

A token of appreciation for guests is requisite at wedding receptions. Wedding favors enable attendees to walk away from the event with a memento and also a small thank you for their participation and celebration of this momentous event. Edible favors are often economical and guests tend to appreciate them. Edible gifts can be as varied as a person desires. Candy-coated almonds are still popular, but many couples have expanded their choices and have created new trends in favors. For those couples seeking a unique edible favor for the wedding, here are some suggestions. 68 | Weddings With Style

www.weddingswithstyle.net

* Cake or brownie pops: Food on a stick has long been a favorite of many, but the concept has been taken to new heights with the creation of cake pops. Clear cello bags and decorative ribbon may be all that’s necessary for a classic wrapping. * Cookies: Pastry arts continue to be popular favors for any occasion. Many bakeries offer intricately designed and decorated cookies that can pertain to any theme. Think about a wedding couple or a set of rings as the cookie of choice for a wedding favor. * Petit fours: These bite-sized pastries lend themselves well to wedding favors. They can easily be paired and put in small boxes as take-home treats. * Chocolate: Gourmet chocolate remains a popular edible favor. Choose among truffles, caramels, chocolate-covered pretzels, or any favorite treat. Depending on the chocolatier, favors may come preboxed and wrapped. * Seasonal treats: If a wedding coincides with a particular season or holiday, favors can be coordinated as well. Think caramel-covered apples for fall parties, chocolate bunnies for spring events, spiced cake bars for the winter holidays or lemon tarts for summer weddings. www.weddingswithstyle.net

An Affair to Remember Flowers… they can set a scene that will take your guests’ breath away. Brides are always looking to keep up with the latest trends and create an event like no other. Today’s brides are decorating their reception sites as elaborately and elegantly as budgets allow, and with a style unheard of a decade ago. The possibilities are endless. Flowers are a hugely important decorating tool. Your florist will incorporate your taste and overall wedding style. Like all wedding professionals, a creative florist will be able to offer invaluable advice on how to build a signature style that’s all your own. Selecting flowers can be a bewildering task, so it is essential to hire the right florist. Because bouquets and flowers are such an integral part of weddings, it’s essential to find a florist whose work you love and who understands what you want. The best way to go about this task is to choose a florist that specializes in wedding celebrations and appreciates the grandeur that beautiful floral arrangements represent. Getting Organized

Your wedding should be one of the most amazing days of your life. Successful planning of details is crucial and can make the difference between a beautiful day and a disastrous one. Getting organized will alleviate unnecessary stress associated with the progression of wedding plans. Keeping track of your wedding details can be unimaginable, whether your wedding will take place in a week, a few months, or a year from now. Staying organized can be the key. As weddings are becoming increasingly extravagant more and more couples are looking to hire a wedding consultant to assist them in planning their wedding. It is extremely important to carefully screen potential wedding planners and to choose a wedding planner who has the experience and resources necessary to plan your wedding. This will make certain that it meets and exceeds all of your expectations. You can find reputable wedding consultants to choose from in Weddings With Style.

THE GUEST LIST Other than the budget, the guest list is the second hardest thing to do. The number of guests will determine the cost per person and how many guests a venue will accommodate. The food and drinks will account for 35 – 40% of your budget. Compile the names of guests from each family into the computer along with the addresses and phone numbers. State if someone is married or single, and if children are invited. If a person is over the age of sixteen they receive a separate invitation. State if someone may bring a guest. Get the names of each member in the family or guest if possible. This will help when addressing the 82 | Weddings With Style

www.weddingswithstyle.net

inner and outer envelopes. Place beside each invited family the number of persons that are invited within that household. This will determine the number of guests invited and will give you a better understanding of the size of your wedding. INVITATIONS Your guest’s first impression of the wedding to come. Wedding invitations should be sent to members of the wedding party and their parents. It is also appropriate to include the Officiant and his/her spouse. Plan to order an additional twenty-five invitations to allow for the unexpected. The response card is a thoughtful way to ease the guest’s responsibility to reply to formal invitations. This helps you to know who is planning on attending and keeps you from having to track down guests who do not send a handwritten reply. As a courtesy to your guests, you should put a stamp on your self-addressed response envelope. Wedding announcements are sent to friends or relatives for whom you have not included on your guest list. The announcement should include the wedding date, but never the time and location of the ceremony. Mail them the day of the wedding.

Budgeting Budget concerns can be one of the most prominent sources of disagreement for a couple in the process of planning their wedding. The couple may have different ideas about what type of wedding they want and also about what they can afford. It is important for the couple to discuss financial constraints before the wedding planning goes to far. The first step for setting a budget is to have a conversation regarding finances well before the wedding planning starts in earnest. It is important that everyone involved in the decision making process of the wedding understand just how much money is available to be spent on the wedding. Doing this early on in the wedding planning process can help the couple to avoid conflict during the planning phase of the wedding. Listed are guide’s you may follow of the traditional manner on how costs are divided:

BRIDE AND/OR BRIDE’S FAMILY EXPENSES Engagement party Wedding consultant’s fee Bridal gown, veil and accessories Wedding invitations, calligraphy, save the date cards, maps, programs, thank you notes and postage costs Wedding gift for bridal couple Bridesmaids’ bouquets Bridesmaids’ luncheon Photography and videography Guest book, toasting glasses, cake knife and serving set Total cost of the ceremony, flowers, music, rental items, and accessories Total cost of reception, flowers, music, rental items, accessories, food, beverages, cake decorations, favors, and extras Transportation for bridal party to ceremony and reception Own attire and travel expenses Groom’s wedding ring and gift Gifts for bridesmaids, flower girl and ring bearer, musicians, book attendants GROOM AND/OR GROOM’S FAMILY EXPENSES Bride’s wedding ring and gift Rehearsal dinner Gifts for groomsmen and ushers Bride’s bouquet Boutonnieres Officiant’s fee Wedding gift for couple Own attire and travel expenses Mothers’ and Grandmothers’ corsages or flowers Marriage license and other legal documents Honeymoon expenses

Groom and His Family’s Budget Even the groom and his family need to decide upon a budget for their wedding cost. The rehearsal dinner will be the largest cost. The rehearsal dinner guests should include all members of the wedding party, their spouses or guests, parents, grandparents, the clergyman and spouse. Out of town guests are optional. The rehearsal dinner can be very casual or an elaborate dinner which is usually held the night before the wedding following the wedding rehearsal. Below is a traditional guideline for your budget. Gift Registry Most brides will register at their favorite department stores or gift shops. Preparing the bridal registry provides friends and family with a list of the couple’s favorite items to choose from. Registering avoids receiving duplicates and allows your guests to coordinate their gift buying. Locations offering bridal registry services usually have an experienced person to assist you in choosing your patterns. You will find that decisions need to be made for china, flatware, glassware, and household accessories. Larger department stores offer the convenience of computerized lists.

Choosing your color schemes for the kitchen, living and dining rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms will be a great help while making your selections for home. For the groom, there are locations that offer a groom’s registry. Sporting good stores and hardware stores are where you might begin. This is a great idea for the groom! It allows your fiancé to become involved in the gift giving process and provides the opportunity to add a few items on his wish list as well. Couples may register anywhere from three to six months before the wedding.

The Parties Engagement Party The engagement party can be given by anyone. Traditionally it is given by the parents. This should occur within a reasonable time after the couple becomes engaged. The party can be formal or very casual. This may be the first opportunity for both sets of parents to visit and get to know each other. Bridal Showers Normally the bridal shower is not given by any of the immediate family. Close friends or the wedding attendants usually host bridal showers. Showers have taken on a lot of creativeness over the last few years. One trend would be having a couples’ shower where both the bride and the groom attend along with their male and female friends and relatives. Most showers take place two to three months before the wedding. Bridesmaids’ Luncheon The luncheon is given by the bride for all of her attendants and is usually held the day before the wedding. This is her opportunity to let her attendants know how grateful she is for all of their help and for being a part of her wedding. The bride can give them their gifts at this time. Traditionally, a pink cake is served with a thimble baked in it. The person to get the piece of cake with the thimble will be the next to marry.

Bachelor Party This is the “guys night out!” The bachelor party is typically hosted and organized by the best man, but can be given by the groom, ushers, or any friend before the wedding. The party is for the groom to celebrate his last night out as a single man. Rehearsal Dinner The rehearsal dinner is traditionally hosted by the groom’s parents, though a close friend or relative can choose to sponsor it. The dinner can be formal, elaborate, or casual all depending on the groom’s personality. Guests should include all members of the bridal party, their spouses, both sets of parents, close family members, the Officiant and spouse. Out of town guests are optional. Toasts are traditionally given by the best man to the bride and groom and also to his future parents-in-law. This will begin the toasting process for the other guest to begin their speeches to the couple. Bachlorette Party This is the “girls night out!” It is hosted by the maid/matron of honor with help from the other attendants. It can be given at any time before the wedding, however; not the day before. Go to a retreat, a spa, out on the town, or any place you think will be fun!

One Week to Wedding Day The final week before your wedding day can be a stressful time filled with many details that need to be confirmed. If you have friends and family who are willing to help out, you can delegate many of these details to reduce the stress of the final week before your wedding. As your wedding day approaches it is important to begin making preparations for your honeymoon. Early in the week before your wedding you will want to confirm all of your honeymoon arrangements such as transportation, hotels and any other special plans you have made for your honeymoon destination. You may also want to pack for your honeymoon during this time to prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and trying to pack the day before or even the day of your wedding. Getting the packing out of the way early will help to alleviate any concerns you have over being prepared for the honeymoon and gives you something to look forward to. Most caterers also require a final count for the number of guests in the week preceding your wedding. If all of your guests have not yet responded to your invitation, you might want to consider making a few phone calls. Having a confirmed response from all of your invited guests will ensure that you give the caterer an accurate number of attendees. Now is also the time to confirm the final details with all of your service providers such as your photographer,

www.weddingswithstyle.net

florist, beauty appoinments, DJ or band, and transportation pro-vider. It is important to confirm details such as times and expectations to ensure that there are not any misunderstandings, and that you will have all of the services that you are expecting at your wedding. You might also want to make arrangements to pay your balances with each of these providers if you have previously only left a deposit. The rehearsal dinner is usually held the night before the wedding so it is important to confirm the details of the rehearsal dinner in the final week before the wedding. Since the couple typically uses the rehearsal dinner as a special time to thank their parents, and the wedding party. Now would be the time to plan out exactly what you plan to say during this offering of thanks. Finally, while there are many details that require your attention in the final week before your wedding, it is important to take some time for yourself, and do something that you consider relaxing. It is important that everything is in place for the wedding and that nothing is overlooked. Try to remain calm as much as possible and not get caught up in the details. WS
