Communication Through Trust Communication Tools. Why it’s important to be a good listener in a community when conflict arises. Group 1 Situation: You and a friend were partnered for a research project. You tried your best to set up time after school to work with your friend on the project. Your friend kept making excuses on why they couldn’t show up. You ended up doing all of the work, but you both got an A. WHAT SHOULD YOU HAVE DONE? _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Group 2 Situation: You have a History teacher that everyone seems to like. You feel that the teacher plays favorites and always gives you low grades, even when you work hard on your schoolwork. You know one person in class that had someone else do their work and they got an A, while you did all of the work yourself and you got a B. WHAT SHOUL D YOU HAVE DONE? _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________

23

Communication Through Trust Communication Tools Continued... TIPS FOR IMPROVED LISTENING/COMMUNICATING • Give the speaker your full attention. • Be comfortable with silence and long pauses. • Be aware of nonverbal cues that may signal a lack of understanding. • Recognize that the speaker may sometimes have difficulty expressing what they actually mean. • Concentrate on what is being said; this will overcome barriers of diverse use of language. • Be aware of your own biases. They might interfere with your ability to listen. • Remember that communication styles can be different. • When waiting for a response, pause longer to allow the other person to answer. • When you feel something is not being done correctly, request a one on one meeting. • If you feel that communication is lacking, share it with the person or your teacher. • Do not jump to a conclusion before you receive the appropriate information. • Communication is the key to success!
