FALL HIGHLIGHTS! Start Here...Get There!
Team Builders 8
On October 21, 2015 GURC-South presented its 2nd Bi-Annual“Start Here...Get There! program to ACC students and the Austin, Texas community.
GURC-South’s Interim Director, JoAnn Benfield, attended the 2015 Southeast Regional Institute on Deafness Conference from October 25-28, 2015.
GURC-South collaborated with Austin Community College’s ESOL and ITP to bring Team Building 8 to Austin, Texas on November 6, 2015 at the Eastview Campus.
This program brought together approximately 40 deaf and hard of hearing, as well as Interpreter Training Program students, staff, and community members. The purpose of this presentation is to keep current and prospective students, staff, and the community updated on Austin Community College and Gallaudet University’s new and current programs.
This conference was held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and the theme was Making Waves for Success. This conference provides educational and professional development for those that work with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind, and latedeafened individuals. The purpose of the conference is to allow collaboration with communities within these efforts and promote vacant positions in various programs. Their deaf keynote speakers were Claudia Gordon, from the White House Office of Public Engagement, and Matt Hamill, a UFC fighter.
Team Builders 8 (TB8) is an organizational consulting and leadership training company that provides team-building, organizational development, leadership training, professional coaching, and strategic planning facilitation.
The attendees were able to meet staff members at ACC who were also Gallaudet Alumni. They were also able to view testimonials from students who are currently Gallaudet students that transferred from ACC, or students who were former Gallaudet students that transferred to ACC. This gave them a scope of insights on what programs they were unaware of and what to expect through their journey or potential transfer experience. JoAnn Benfield attended this conference to network with new individuals and programs as GURC-South has adopted most of the southeastern states. She says, “This was a great conference to meet other professionals that work with the deaf and hard of hearing community and to build better relationships.” People who attended this conference were able to earn CEUs and promote their business and programs at daily exhibitions.
ACC contracted TB8 (Laura Cook and Lisa Swanson) to provide a group of faculty and staff members from several select departments with a one-day training and planning retreat. The retreat, themed, ‘Building a Signing Community’ was sponsored by GURC-South and the ACCESOL department. This year marks the first year of Gallaudet University regional Center - South embarking on connecting with new regional states. This conference was a great conference to network with people in the field of education - with a focus on deaf and hard of hearing students as well as others with disabilities.
Our exhibit drew in various students that were interested in ASL or are deaf and hard of hearing attending the school. Some of them were considering continuing their education in ASL. Approximately 300 students are currently taking ASL 1 or 2 at this school. The school also has a deaf and hard of hearing program. A few of the deaf and hard of hearing students that came to our exhibit remembered us from a Youth Leadership Training we hosted last year.
