Teacher’s Prize Joan Alice Azirian (nee Warburton) was born on 2/2/1922 in Bury, Manchester, UK. A keen student and lover of the English Language, she became a history teacher at a local girls’ school, rising to the position of Headmistress. Possessing a photographic memory, she devoured literature and poetry alike, with the English poet John Clare being among her favourites. In 1957, she met and married Vahan Azirian, an Armenian from Cyprus who had moved to Manchester some ten years before. Unfortunately, their marriage was cut short by Vahan’s untimely death in 1967, but not before he had imparted a love of the Armenian people and culture. Joan sadly passed away in December 2011, leaving her considerable library to her nephew, Bedo Eghiayan, who arranged for some of the collection to be donated to the National Poetry Recitation Contest for the enjoyment of young Armenians and their teachers, wishing to improve their English reading and comprehension, and instilling a love for the written word. Joan would have very much enjoyed being part of this event and would have wished the contestants the very best of luck. “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one main in his time plays many parts” (William Shakespeare, As You Like It)

The Nick Lourie Nonsense Poem Bequest Nick Lourie died aged 63 in 2016. He was funny and wise. He loved to hear and to tell tales, he would sing, do magic tricks, and enchant everyone he met with his rare, free spirit. He would wish you all well with your poems and your English. He would encourage you all to follow your dreams. Jill Lourie, Nick’s sister
