Head Teacher: M.R.Tremmel Gullane Primary School Muirfield Terrace Gullane EH31 2HL Tel/Fax: 01620 843455 gullane.ps@gullane.elcschool.org.uk http://edubuzz.org/blogs/gullane Dear Parents/Carers I was optimistic with the deck chair! The weather has been awful of late. With the school fair and sports day coming up I do hope the sun chooses to shine soon. The newsletter is a little sharp as we have events we wished you to have plenty notice about. There will be another newsletter in June. The last month of school is as busy as the rest of the session. There is much going on and the diary is a busy one. We have met with the new P1 parents and the new P1 children have been in to the P1 classroom to get a feel for how it will be. All went well and we aim for a smooth transition from nursery to P1. Staff work with one another to ensure all the relevant information is passed on and the start of ‘formal’ school should feel calm and a ‘next step’ for these little ones. P7 have visits to the secondary school as well as an activity day. They are also looking forward to their party and assembly. End of session reports will be out to parents in the next couple of weeks and it is important that you return the slip to let us know that your child has actually handed you the document! There is a space for feedback which we welcome. Staffing We will inform you of a full staffing list and classes in the last two weeks of term. Changes to various plans happen at moments I can’t always bargain for so I prefer to leave this as late as I can to minimise the disruption to families and pupils if such changes do occur late in the session. With the above in mind, Mrs Herdman will be leaving us at the end of this session. She has been working on a reduced week, following the birth of her son, for the last 2 years and feels that she requires a career break for a variety of personal reasons. We will miss her input in school. She joined us a number of years ago as a newly qualified teacher and she has been a loyal member of our team since that date. She managed our eco agenda for some years- compost bins, eco bags, gardening, willow shelter are just a few areas she developed. She will be greatly missed and the school will not feel the same without her. I know she will keep in touch and we hope the break will energise her and we look forward to her return.

Uniform Mrs Mancey has asked that all uniform orders be placed prior to the summer break so please send in your forms as soon as possible. Thank you to the new P1 parents for getting their orders in on time!

The PTA Summer Fair Saturday 7th June 2014 11-2pm Yes! It is that time of year again! Gullane Primary needs you – your time and your donations! Planning and preparations for the fair are underway. We are looking for a great turnout again this year and we have our fingers crossed for a sunny and non-windy day. Bring friends, relatives and neighbours – it will be lovely to see you all! Mrs Mackay has sent out raffle tickets- good prizes I think- please return as soon as you can even if you choose not to buy a raffle ticket. We will reuse the booklets for those who wish to purchase more. Leaflets are out with a ‘What’s On’ plan- looks fun! I will be running the tombola again and I am looking for bottle donations to make the stall the best one there! Just send in when you can prior to the 6th June- labelling takes some time! We would also like some of your delicious home baking for the sale table. Thank you! We forgot to say on the ‘Bake Off’ form that we will charge a 50p entry for the competition. I sent out a text this week but no harm in repeating. The key judge is Derek Johnstone, formally a chef working with Albert Roux and now managing his own restaurant in the Golf Inn. He knows his way around a cake! The current PTA will be standing down at the end of this session. I have to say on behalf of all the school staff how much we have valued and appreciated the work of the PTA which is spearheaded by Mrs Mackay. Our grateful thanks to the whole PTA for the wonderful work they carry out to support our school. This is much appreciated by all of the staff and pupils. We will meet with the PTA to identify any purchases from this session’s fundraising and I am sure the Pupil Parliament will wish to have an input as they are always brimming with ideas.

The PTA AGM will be held in the Garden Room at the Golf Inn at 8pm on Thursday 12th June. All very welcome. Refreshments offered. Sports Meadowbank A team of P6&7 pupils represented Gullane Primary at the annual Meadowbank Athletics event last Wednesday. They did a superb job and managed third place. Our thanks to Miss Burns, PE Specialist, Mrs McGrane and Mrs Valente for their time coaching and preparing these youngsters for the various events. Our thanks to Mr Cavers and Mrs Lindsay for giving up their day to accompany the team. We would not have been able to participate without their input. P6 Kwik Cricket Tournament Our P6 group attended the East Lothian Kwik Cricket tournament and managed to come home triumphant as winners! What delightful news. Our thanks to Mrs Wilson, cricket coach, for training them so well. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs

Wilson and Mrs Walker. These two parents have been such a wonderful support to the school when it comes to sporting events. They attend, accompany, coach and transport children. This is greatly appreciated by all the staff and pupils. P5 Cycle Training Level 1 Mr Adamson has already given out letters to inform the P5 parents about cycle training. This starts on Monday 9th June. Queen’s Baton Relay The Queen’s Baton will be coming through Gullane on Tuesday 17th June. Exact timings are not available but it is expected to be between 12.30 and 1pm. This straddles our lunch time but we have been asked to take the pupils up to the main street to watch and cheer it on its way. I would need some adult volunteers to escort and supervise the walk to the main street as well as supervise the children waiting to see the baton. I would appreciate any help you are able to offer – we need two adults per class – P1K, P1D, P2, P3, P6 and P7 classes. Please contact the school office, myself or the class teacher directly by Friday 6th June. Thank you in anticipation. Primary Games P4&5 will be at Meadowmill on June 17th to participate in the Primary Games. The children will have the opportunity to see the Queen’s Baton at Meadowmill as it makes its way around East Lothian. All P4&5 have had their letters about this. Sports Day – 13th June 2014 This will take place on the morning of 13th June. We aim to start about 10am. Parents, friends and relatives are very welcome. Following the event the children will be taken back into their classes and parents are more than welcome to collect their child from the class teacher to go home. (around 12/12.15) Please do not ask to take your child until they have been returned and the register checked. This ensures we account for every child and that they are safe. I would ask that parents do not give their child food or any other items while sports day is underway. The children will have a break before and then an ‘orange stop’. You are more than welcome to stay on the grounds and have a picnic after the event. If the weather is nice it can be a lovely way to spend an hour or so. If Sports Day is not going to run due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control we will text all families by 8am that morning. We would make a decision then as many families will have plans and such like that may require altering if the event is cancelled. Gullane’s Got Talent This event has now been rescheduled and will take place on Tuesday 10th June in the afternoon. The house captains are having trouble booking the judging panel – these celebrities have very full diaries you know!

Golf- Babe Zaharias and the Honor Bright These competitions are open to pupils in P4-7. Entrants should have received a note to inform them of the plan for the events.

If you have offered to help on the day Mrs Chapman should have been in touch. My thanks to Mrs Chapman for coordinating and organising this trophy at Gullane Golf Club, we really appreciate the time she gives this.

Please remember to let us know if your child has done something out of school no matter how small or large – we love to know and we put up a card in school and mention the child and the achievement in our newsletters. We value your opinions and comments also. We are happy to accept the text for the information via email.

Congratulations!
