An Alfonso Racer Returns Home
By Tommy Hewes The only Alfonso Racer known to remain in existence was recently donated to the GYC by its owner of 40 years, Mr. E.W. Chapman of Memphis, TN. Tommy Hewes and Louis Bell drove to Memphis on Oct. 7 to bring it home to the Gulfport. It was on display at the Club for the annual meeting on Oct.19. According to the archives, Vincent Alfonso designed and built 24 or 25 of these 12‐foot gaff single rig boats in the 1930’s and 1940’s for juniors who actively sailed and raced along the Coast. A whole generation of GYC sailors honed their racing skills and enthusiasm in these boats. Most of the fleet was lost in the hurricane of 1947 which also destroyed the Club. Mr. Chapman said he purchased the boat in the early 1950’s from Vince. He was told it had been damaged in the hurricane and subsequently it was repaired by Vince. At this point we do not know the original name or owner but it is believed to have been built in the early 1930’s. Richard Chapin has volunteered to restore the boat and we hope to have it permanently displayed in the Club by next summer.
LADIES AUXILIARY Ladies Auxiliary enjoyed a look at the latest in Fall Fashions on October 27. Fashions were provided and presented by Wanda Gatlin of Gatlin’s on Debuys Road in Gulfport. Members enjoyed a delicious lunch while the show was presented. Everything from casual to evening wear along with accessories was shown. Models were Lyn Bates, Bernice Simmons, Anne Warren, Judy Karl, Sandy Morrison, Dottie Long, Liz Flatt, Elaine Schmidtling, Jana Jarrell, Kathy Manifold, Nina Revon. Hostesses Teenie Barnett, Elaine Whittenberg, Ann Mathers, Paula Beasley and Bobbye Carraway artfully decorated the tables with Halloween themed items. Pumpkins and laughing scarecrows on the tables provided a leap into fall and the cooler weather that all are looking forward to. On November 24, GYC member Daisy Karam‐ Read will present her new book, “The Love Affair Continues: From Manhattan to Mississippi Part Two.” There will be a book signing after the luncheon.
Hostesses for November will be Dottie Long, Shirley Pate, Elaine Schmidtling, Edna Loflin, and Mary Frances Martin. Joyce Smith (228‐861‐ 3397or 228‐222‐3146) or email@example.com makes the reservations for the Wednesday Luncheon on the Monday before so please let her know by then so that she can provide an accurate number for the lunch menu. COMMODORE’S REPORT As we move into November and the holiday season, come enjoy yourself at the Club! I want to congratulate Commodore‐Elect Teal Salloum and the incoming Governing Board on their election at the recent General Membership Meeting. Teal is excited about leading the Club next year and he will do an outstanding job. I want to emphasize that although the Club has faced challenges this year, mainly due to the economy, the Governing Board has been diligent in its work and is determined to lead the Club into “smoother sailing” in 2011. The Club has many accomplishments this year and we should all be proud of our facility, our staff and our membership. I want to thank the membership for adopting the By Law revision to the Junior Resident Member category, which will allow new members in this category to pay reduced initiation fees, assessments and dues. Please take the initiative and inform persons under the age of thirty‐five (35) of this great opportunity to join the GYC at an affordable price. This provision is effective immediately, so please help grow our membership! Well, the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival may
need to be re‐named the GYC Wooden Boat Festival. The GYC crews were out in full force last weekend in Madisonville and brought home the gold! Congratulations to the Bout Time (Johnny Atherton), the Alligator (Wayne Tisdale), and the Loophole (John Heath) for taking the top spots in the Lugger division. Special thanks to Cap’n Tisdale for all his efforts in making sure everyone knew where to be and what to do! As we move into the holidays, keep the Club in mind for your Christmas parties, luncheons and other events. Our new Club Manager Steve Chatelain has hit the ground running and he and the staff are full of creative ideas to make your event a success. See you at the Club, Marty Warren, Commodore
SAILING NEWS The fall of 2010 is the inaugural sailing season for St. Patrick Catholic High School and Gulfport High School teams. The teams have been practicing at Gulfport Yacht Club since the beginning of school. Their first regatta will be the Mississippi High School Sailing Championship which will be held at the Gulfport Yacht Club on November 5 and 6, 2010. Teams from all along the coast, including Brother Martin, St. Stanislaus and several Florida teams are planning to attend the regatta. Sailors will race 420’s and Laser Radials in four different classes. There are 20 races scheduled for the event, making for some tight, short course racing and exciting competition. Come on out and cheer for your favorite high school team!
The Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction Fundraiser was a huge success. We had a very large crowd that donated generously to the High School Sailing program. A big thanks to many volunteers who worked hard and made the event so successful. And, a special thank you to our special guests of honor, John Dane III and Austin Sperry who shared with us their Olympic experiences. Sam Vasquez, Sailing Director
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT This is my first letter as General Manager of the Gulfport Yacht Club, and to begin I would like to say how honored I am to take on this position. I would also like to thank the Board, Committee Members, Membership and Staff for such a warm welcoming. I have been managing private clubs for over twenty years and have extensive experience and knowledge in the club industry. I look forward to a very long and prosperous career with GYC. My first order of business will simply be an evaluation of all aspects of our operation. No doubt as you visit the club you will see changes. My targeted goal is to provide member services to develop the growth of the entire operation and to provide a successful future for the club; introduce policy and procedures to efficiently manage the assets of the corporation; offer the membership opportunities to utilize the club and bring back the “Home away from Home” feeling and the camaraderie the club once had. We have an exciting Holiday Season planned at the club. Mark your calendars for some of the events offered. Wednesday Family Pasta Night has been very successful with an average of 90 to 100 covers.
We are also introducing new Menu Specials on Friday Nights. If you have not been out to the club for one these awesome nights lately, it’s time to get out and see what all the talk and excitement is about. My management style is very hands on and I have an open door policy. If you have any questions, ideas or concerns please stop by and lets chat. If you have an emergency and need to contact me immediately and I’m away from the club, my current cell phone is 337‐257‐7861. Lastly, each month I will ask a Trivia question in my letter. The first member who brings me the correct answer in person when dining at the club on a Friday Night will receive a FREE meal that night. Trivia Question for November: This old wooden boat served as the Presidential Yacht pre –WWII from the Truman administration until it was auctioned off during the Nixon administration. What is the name of the boat? See you at GYC, Steve Chatelain, General Manager
ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE I really can’t believe its November … man, oh man has it been a busy year! Oktoberfest was great … a big thanks to the House Committee and Aimee Seicshnaydre. Plus, our Halloween Happy Hour festivities were Happy to say the least! The season is now upon us and November is busy, busy, busy with family, friends and football. I would like to encourage you during this time to use the club and take advantage of all it has to offer. Several Saturdays ago, Kathleen Stone Mayer and I had breakfast at the club. I wish I could say I had dry
wheat toast, but NO, I had the Beignets and they were fabulous! Do yourself a favor—call a couple of friends and meet at the club for a Saturday breakfast …. You won’t be disappointed and I promise you... the view is NOTHING like IHOP! Tell them you are coming and they will make it extra special. We may try and schedule a bingo for a Saturday night sometime soon. Will keep you posted. As always, check your e‐log, posted flyers, GYC monitor and the Log Sheet about upcoming events and details. Victoria Salloum Chambers, Entertainment Chair
