Parent to Parent The first time I ever visited Kennedy Space Center was in April of 1990, on my high school senior trip. Back in those days, they had the IMAX theater and the bus tour, and you had to buy separate tickets for each. I believe some of the other attractions may have been under construction at the time I was there, but I don’t remember being able to see anything else.

building to the launch site burns diesel fuel at a rate of 150 gallons per mile, and (2) that a bird pooped on my principal’s wife while we were waiting to board the bus tour. When I was on the tour again years later, and the guide pointed out the eagle’s nest on the property, I did remember that as well. But unlike the other two memories, it had slipped my mind in the meantime. Thirteen years later, when our two sons were six and two, and we had recently moved to the Tampa Bay area, we went back for our next visit. And it had certainly changed a lot! There were several new exhibits, the Saturn V Center had been added to the bus tour, and there was even a replica of a space shuttle for the kids to explore. Our oldest, David, was completely captivated, so we upgraded our tickets to annual passes and went back several times during that year. We’ve been back a few more times since those annual passes expired, but not nearly as often, and our youngest, Haylee, didn’t really remember it. So when we had some family visit from out of

state a few months ago, we took them and Haylee to have another look. The Atlantis complex with the actual retired shuttle and multiple shuttlerelated shows and exhibits was a new feature since our last visit almost nine years ago. Haylee had a lot of fun exploring the shuttle cockpit and especially sliding down the re-entry slide. With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this month, if you’re like us, and it’s been a while since you’ve visited the Kennedy Space Center, now may be a really great time to make the trip. Until next time,
