Fe b ru a ry FU N FACTS Black History is Our History In honor of Black History Month, Regions Bank is once again offering the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest to high school seniors and college students. The Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest is based on the submission of a competitive essay about an inspirational African-American. To enter, applicants write a 500-word essay about how an African-American has inspired and motivated him or her. Entries will be accepted through February 28th. Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday that is celebrated on the third Monday of February every year. Originally a holiday celebrating George Washington, Presidents’ Day is now viewed as an all-encompassing celebration of U.S. presidents.

Known as “The Great American Race,” the Daytona 500 has become the most prestigious motor sports event in America, with an annual TV audience in excess of 20 million. The Daytona 500 is held at the Daytona International Speedway which takes up a whopping 480 acres, stands on eighty-thousand square feet of concrete, is built with thirty-one million pounds of steel and is reinforced with tons of traditions. While there are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day, some historians believe that it originated with St. Valentine. Legend states that St. Valentine was imprisoned by Claudius II after refusing to honor an order forbidding marriage. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” to the jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended. The note was addressed to “his beloved” and read “from your Valentine.” Valentine was martyred on February 14, 269 A.D.
