Programs were stored on cassette tapes and, instead of hard drives, data was recorded onto flimsy floppy disks. With a starting price of $1,995, the IBM 5150 personal computer was an immediate success and quickly became the industry standard. Its popularity was so great that Time magazine chose the “personal computer” as its 1982 Man of the Year.
