01 PROJECT: Valais 2048, Master Thesis Project

SITUATION: Valais. Switzerland

YEAR: 2016 PROFESSOR: Enric Batlle

PROGRAM: The project begins with an extend research done during my exchange in Switzerland with the professor Paola Vigano, about the future of Switzerland; more exactly with the scenario of the Valais in the year 2048. Studies done by the group studio Basel and the ETH reveals that Switzerland is going to have two major issues to deal with in less than 50years. One one hand, the growing of the population, which point up to 14.000.000 people, doubling the actual population of the Helvetic country. On the other hand the increase of temperature caused by the global warming, that will affect to the future of the ski stations and the river levels. The Valais, Swiss canton of the Alps, is one of the regions of Switzerland that is going to suffer more these consequences, due to its geographical situation and the actual growing of the population. The project aims to detect an area of the Valais with potential to develop having in account the factors named. The zone chosen is the associations of communes of Crans Montana. The project consists in generating an axe between these communes, making them work in a more autonomy way, with an efficient system of transportation, an agricultural program and a better management of the resources, specially the water, that as we will see is a key point in the Valais. This axe ends up connecting to an existing funicular, and at this point a new intermodal station will appear.

02 PROJECT: Post industrial Landscape

SITUATION: Ciutat Meridiana, Barcelona

YEAR: 2012 PROFESSORS: Xavier Vancells, Claudi Agiló

PROGRAM: The project consisted in the rehabilitation of and industrial area in the outsides of Barcelona. The site is located between the neighborhoods of Ciutat Meridiana and Can Cuyàs and it has one of the biggest highways to access Barcelona crossing on top of it. This project aims to help in the reconnection of the two neighborhoods and to reactive the existing industrial areas with new activities, recycling the existing structures of the old industry. Can Cuyàs is located on a key point of access to Barcelona , acting as a gateway to the city and the surrounding connected through a set of infrastructures such as highways, metro and even a Railway Station. Can Cuyàs could be the best place to exchange agricultural products without the need to go to Barcelona , saving time , money and CO2 emissions. We detect the pre-existence of some urban orchards that have been created independently by the neighbors around. Adding this, to the large number of unemployed in the area and fields surrounding, we consider appropriate to create a market of Km0 in the area of Can Cuyàs. In this way residents could engage in farming and orchards and being able to sell the product in the market. The existing industrial buildings will be used to host the Market itself and to create a greenhouse.

03 PROJECT: Living Communities

SITUATION: Calldetenes, Vic

YEAR: 2013 PROFESSORS: Silvia Musquera

PROGRAM: The intervention consisted in the rehabilitation of the old monastery of Sant tomás. Located in calldetenes, just 5’ away from Vic. One of the biggest cities in Catalunya. The project was proposed by the institution of Sant Tomàs, which nowadays owns the property and is dedicated to help handicap people. The monastery has to fit living spaces for the new habitants, but also create new equipments like an historical museum of the area, a restaurant and sports facilities, such as swimming pools or gyms that would be used also for the handicap people of the association. As the project was in an ancient monastery and the topic was living in communities, I thought that the best program would be to create a Co-Housing community. Co-housing is a community housing system consisting of small basic living cell completed with extensive common areas. Thanks to the design of spatial social activities and administrative shared system, Co-housing facilitates the integration between neighbors and the social benefits. In adition there are economic and environmental benefits thanks to the fact of sharing common areas. One of the great virtues of this system is the creation of workplaces in the same area. The inhabitants of the monastery and the people of St. Thomas foundation will be able to work in the bar, the eco-store, the museum, the administration and especially in the St. Thomas Foundation.


Club Of Rome

SITUATION: Zurich, Switzerland

YEAR: 2014 PROFESSORS: Giuliani & HongĂźer

PROGRAM: The project consisted in creating a building of mixed uses for the new headquarters of the club of Rome in the heart of Zurich. The building had to have a public space with a bar, a foyer, a conference hall and a library, coexisting with the offices of the club of Rome and a set of three apartments for guest. The building was located in the shore of the Limmat River and at the limit between two neighborhoods with different morphologies. The project aims to create a public space on the ground floor to interact with the city and make the club of Rome part of it. That’s why it has the bar at the street level creating a terrace on the back side, protected from the winds of the river. The morphology of the building is a respond to its situation, having different heights, each one corresponding to the existing typology.

05 PROJECT: Competition “Supermanzanas”, Archallenge.

SITUATION: Eixample de Cerdà, Barcelona.

YEAR: 2014

PROGRAM: The competion consisted in the creation of a Superblock of the Eixample Cerdà in Barcelona, trying to minimize the use of the car and to create new activities. The project works with a series of pergolas that go along the streets hosting different activities for the different actors that live in these superblocks. Each street has 8 different activities. Being some of them more related to infrastructures like parking cars or hosting the garbage bins, coexisting with other ones related to the production such as urban orchards and little ateliers, and then some more ludic like parks or sports facilities next to other ones more wild, bringing back the nature to the city with local trees. On the intersection of the streets, the structure of the pergola becomes two large porticos remembering the Cardus and Decumanus of the roman city. This porticos are supported by pillars on the edges, in order that this whole are can be covered during the market days or for other activities.

06 PROJECT: Competition “Una torre para volar”, Becas Arquia.

SITUATION: Non Specific

YEAR: 2015

PROGRAM: Already in Greek mythology, Icarus risked facing the laws of nature. He devised a way of circumventing the Earth’s gravity and ascend to the height, a challenge to the impossible for everyone except for him. This tower is designed for such individuals, like Icarus, they decide to risk and go beyond. The tower is presented as a continuous monument which is mostly surrounded by a material that reflects the environment in which it is situated, making it invisible to lazy eyes that don’t want to risk or explore new bounds. A game of cat ladders are waiting to guide you through a dizzying road of successive platforms, from different heights that help to create different experiences along the ascension. After the last platform, the adventurer accesses the roof tower. That is the essence of the structure, a completely white empty bucket, with perfect transparency of nowhere, where the landscape is framed, and that only hangs a swing.
