01. Old Theater Sousa Bastos

arch 11th in Coimbra. Lost in a maze of narrow streets, after climbing some very steep steps, I suddenly end up in front of the facade of Sousa Bastos. The meeting is frontal, medieval streets offer a limited perspective. This singular architecture in the fabric of the city stands out but seems totally ignored by passersby. The old theater of the historic center, closed in the 1980s, is now abandoned.

The place has lost its cultural identity and its centrality. Behind this visual obstacle hides a vast empty space marked by an emotional richness unsuspected by walkers. This façade is the result of a stratification by successive periods which marked the site from their trace and the history becomes condensed into a present. In the 12th century, the building was the St. Christopher Church, partly demolished in the 19th century to become a theater. The facade was first Art Nouveau and Art Deco style in the 1930s. Today we can observe materials and mouldings from each period

through faults or behind a piece of plaster torn by time. An architectural palimpsest has come to us and the existing will become the identity support of a new project, which will be part of the continuation of the rewriting of the place. The historic center of Coimbra is mainly populated by students, under the influence of the largest university in Europe. This population is present in a short but cyclic temporality. A student housings program is chosen, also responding to the dilapidated república opposite the site. Furthermore, the identity of the neighborhood is strongly spreading through places dedicated to music. This soundscape is part of Portuguese culture : within a radius of 150 meters (defining the proximity of the neighborhood), we can go to the Fado ao Centro in a small concert hall to listen to young musicians eager to make known, in a friendly atmosphere ; or we can go to the Sé Velha Church to attend all year to official concerts, called Sérénade >


Monumentale interpreted by Tunas, student music groups, attracting thousands of people. Thus, in addition to the housing program, a rehearsal studios program is added. The imagined scenario is a programmatic path governing a concerts preparation process. Sousa Bastos site is a place of life for students, a place of learning and training for music. Fado ao Centro is a first contact place with the stage world, in close proximity with the public, and the SĂŠ Velha Church is a concert place for remarkable events in the life of the neighborhood and the city. The real issue of this project is to weave social ties through an urban fabric, dislocated by many hollow teeth, which includes the old theater. We have to arouse the passage and the stop in front of this place, give it an identity and a centrality. To make it dynamic and attractive, there is a need to return the place to the everyday life of the inhabitants.

X Museum is located on the Alcantara docks in Lisbon, at the Tagus’ edge. The project must take place on an isolated site with a succession of boundaries (road / railway / road ), cutting it from the activity of the city.

reflects the formal plan of streets. We can observe below the activity within the exhibition spaces and sometimes crossing them. The mental representation that we can imagine about our route becomes blurred.

Set up a contemporary art museum in an industrial port area involves in our approach to requalify the space of this area, unsuitable for receiving the public.

The signal indicates the entrance. Inside, we find ourselves under a large skylight, facing the permanent exhibition wall pierced with openings between the paintings. A relation is established between street and block : the street is not dead, there is as much to see outside as inside the exhibition space.

In order to bring the city to the museum and to open the site, we first created a footbridge bringing the public directly on the docks in front of the museum entrance. The museum is designed as a streets and blocks system in order that the visitor can continue his walk into the city inside the museum. Therefore, all spaces are placed on the ground floor to create several streets. On the outdoor

Streets oriented in this way compared to the docks reveal the Tagus River throughout the course. Perspectives are at the end of each street, there is any obstacle to the walk. The space is fluid.

he studio proposes to establish a new architectural language from natures to create new futurs. Proposals are fed with visual inspirations, translated through digital tools.

we have to formalize a global project that would present all these characteristics.

A learning of these tools will improve digital skills and put them in the service of visualization and manufacturing.

The overall project was designed by developping the first form ; in such a way that floors, walls, and ceiling merge into a single fluid body, able to appropriate the qualities of the site and interact with him.

The creative journey of this studio is a proposal for the design and construction of contemporary architecture. Process Re-interpretation of various existing forms, resulting in a new form. Research of a scale, a program and a viable site.

The form of this project stems from the observation of stalactites, neurons and jellyfish.

What should be the language for the floors ? For the envelope ? For openings ?

A natural pool This skeleton - like a sponge would be the holder of plants able to filtering water of the canal and others oxygenate the air. Several spaces of different sizes, emerged and half submerged, are appropriate by each one the time of a swim.

The interpretation of these elements allowed to lead to a single form that has multiple functions : delimitation of spaces, structure, circulation, skylights and ventilation. Then,

Reflection on the relation between the user opposite to its direct environment. This approach involves a sensitive reading of places, an understanding of uses and formalization of a response including generic problems of programs and specific problems of contexts.The program includes an open area for the public and another private for users of the nautical base. The project must clearly establish the accessible parts to the public and the one dedicated to users.

center. The program is treated in two parts : the nautical base and housing are separated by a public square, which connects the two programs despite their spatial distance. The overall project aims to be as compact and transparent as possible for a modest spatial and visual impact on the landscape of the Marne. A heat science strategy is chosen in response to the singular situation of the project, especially regarding the permanent humidity.

The analysis of the site revealed that it is isolated and difficult to access. It was obvious to create a pedestrian link between the two banks of the Marne through the platform in order to make it accessible.

rocess Random handing out of a plot of 500 meters width, determine its intrinsic qualities and propose a system using the particularities of the site. In the Beauce region any construction is obvious and raises a question about impact of its context and establishes a specific relation with this one.

project only contains a kitchen. The reproduced and translated shape in a further field is processed through the program with just enough to make it autonomous : only a bed, a shower and a table are arranged inside.

The particularity of this plot is a farm buildings, still inhabited. The project maintains a relation with this building. One shape is inscribe in its contours. It bends to the context of the building to be as one and becomes dependent on the farm. This newly created shape is transposed in a different environment, an empty field. It generates its own context and becomes autonomous. Thus the context characterizes the two forms. The resulting shape is inserted in the outline of the farm’s entrance. The program complements the one of the farm : the

rocessus Designing a sensitive architecture according to the client’s personality, taking into account adjacent housings on the Montparnasse slab and work on light, constraint of a maximum volume of 7x7x7m. « Asian student came to study fashion in Paris. He is studious and nostalgic for his homeland »

Concept The inner garden refers to Japanese culture of the tea ceremony : tea is served in the tea hut, accessible only by a path through a garden. Here, the student must go through the garden to access the living room / kitchen. Once past the airlock of the entrance, more we progress inside the dwelling, more we have the impression to go out of it. It is this contradiction which, in my opinion, creates emotion.
