TID TOWER IN TIRANA INTERIOR DESIGN AND HOTEL REFURNISHMENT 51N4E www.51n4e.com LOCATION: Tirana, Albania DURATION: january 2014 -april 2016 ROLE: project collaborator PROJECT PHASE: interior design, tendering, construction follow-up COMPLETION: spring 2016

Initiated in 2004, the first high rise in the capital of the young democratie of Albania, was originally designed a as a flexible structure without defined program. The developer was looking for a shell that could be readily adapted to whatever future opportunities or circumstances arose. The strange mixed and undefined programme hid the desire to build a tower like a Maison Domino in which the relationship between the struture (which offers capacity) and the infill (which demands flexibility) is only loosely defined. The gradual shift from an elliptical form to rectangular one allows the tower and shadow across the building’s surface. in 2014 the programme of the tower was changed from office space to luxury hotel. The office was in charge of the interior design of the four public levels of the tower, which are positioned in different locations of the building. Although the tower ultimately became a five-star hotel, which is by nature an exclusive programme, we strove to give the project a certain level of openness and to encourage interaction with the public domain.As a result, the cupola and galleria are freely accessible at all times, and the hotel lobby was designed to be empty in order to function as a public space and allow the continuation into the building of life on the street.

How could a concept of luxury be created in a society that had been forced to live without it until recently? The base was developed as a collection of varied elements using different materials and architectural languages in an echo of the rich mix of textures characterising the hotel’s urban surroundings. The ground floor incorporates a public entrance lobby, the hotel’s reception area and a publicly accessible café. The first floor was designed as a lounge area to be used by hotel guests as well as outsiders for co-working and meetings. The third floor is where the conference and event venue was finally incorporated. It was designed as a free-standing outdoor pavilion surrounded by a kind of open-air ambulatory for enjoying Albania’s pleasing climate. The layout of the top floor, which hosts additional conference facilities as well as a cocktail bar, was purposely left very generic, with its most striking quality being the ‘broken panorama’ of the city it affords. ST NAZAIRE ALVEOLE 12-14 RENEWAL OF A SUBMARINE BASE INTO A PUBLIC VENUE IN ST NAZAIRE 51N4E www.51n4e.com LOCATION: Saint Nazaire, France DURATION:january 2014 - february 2016 ROLE: project collaborator PROJECT PHASE: Sketch design COMPLETION: spring 2017 BUDJET: 5,9 M€ HT SURFACE: 3030m2

This operation takes part of the development of the harbour site of the city of St-Nazaire. The project is implanted inside a submarine base, a structure built by the German army during World War II and whose transformation has already been initiated troughout several publics prwwograms. The functions of the public venue occupies three adjoining cells, and completes the LIFE installations, a multi fonctionnal venue implamented in the base since 10 years ago. Next to the Hall, the adjoining alveole will be used as a oversized meeting space. The signage and lights above the large entries will activate this large space, surrounded with warming light. The main Alveole accomodates the public hall (16x66m / maximum capacity 2000 people), wich backs onto a service building were are located the dressing rooms, locker rooms, and all the technics and ventilation pipes highlighted as a large machine room. The Hall appears as a «box in a box», a autonomous structure physically and acoustically disconnected from the base. It is closed on the west by a wall ornemented by golden metal pannels and perforated with a large window openning on the interior of the base. The warming athmosphere of the room was deeply considered by allowing natural light to penetrate in all the depth of the space, and with the goal to make a flexible and welcoming space,contrasting with the austerity of the base. The frequency of the structural porticos, combining with dark wooden pieces and thin metallic elements allows the natural light to penetrate and to reflect in all the depth of the hall.

The floor is made in green polished concrete, and the dark wooden human size pannels are sourounding all the inferior part of the space on the height of the access doors.

Ceilling lights in brass, specifically design for the project, will allow to modulate the light, by changing the height and producing a diffuse illumination on the ceilling of the hall. The facade of the hall facing the see is fully glassed. the building alongside is made out of visible bricks and, the office buildings are covered of metal planks.

The Metabolism of Albania research project focused on the nation’s future with the Next Generation Albania initiative. This study strives to seek solutions from within by finding the right means of activating the entire territory based on the country’s specificities so as to help make the goals of Next generation Albania achievable. The challenges in Albania are immense when looked at from the perspective of having to catch up with the rest of Europe. On the other hand, all nation now face the challenge of how to successfully make the transition to the next economy, to a green model in a resilient post-fossil fuel future. The posing question is could Albania not skip the catchingup phase, and focus instead on how to leapfrog into the twenty-first century? Albania has currently to develop its own vision and strategy on the basis of the unique characteristics, cultural values, and scenic qualities of the country itself while framing them in a global context. The main priority is to activate the potential of Albania’s territory by understanding it as a natural ecology: a coherent ecosystem with a metabolism made up of material flows, such as water, food, and energy. The following test cases were developed as a last step of this research by design. They are not meant to be absolute answers to the problems, rather sketches for projects that could make a difference in this context. In this sense, new is not necessarily to be found in imported models, but preferably in the redefinition of the existing. Altogether, the tests try to describe investments that generate the broadest possible value. The Modest technical solution with a high social value is preferable to a brillant one with solety technical advantages. Short term needs should be placed in long term perspectives, and economic urgencies should intertwine with environmental ones.

ROOM IN THE CITY HOUSE EXTENSION & REFURBISHMENT IN LEUVEN 51N4E www.51n4e.com LOCATION: Saint Nazaire, France DURATION: january 2014 - february 2016 ROLE: project collaborator PROJECT PHASE: Construction - tendering

The Brief of the client was to transform a old typical Belgian family house in Leuven by emphesizing all the pre-existing qualities on the plot. A spacious court yard in the center with great vegetation and growing plants on the wall and a all year long sun exposition. A workshop space with two levels at the back of the plot. It is this generosity and effect of surprise which you feel upon entering in this enclosed space that the intervention tries to preserve and underlign. The extension is used as a living room and as a the center of gravity for all the house, assembling and connecting together all the parts of the house. Coming as an extension, it is accessible directly from the entrance corridor, as well as from the kitchen where an enlarged opening allows a visibility between the rooms.A new stair on the side alows to accessibility to the bedrooms and a new entry point to the refurnished workshop space. The garden is reached through a rotating pannel door. Assuming the role of the central space of the house, the generous proportion of the extension, 5m x 10m and 4,5m high allow a flexibility of use. Its transparent covering made of glass and metal grilling emphasize the connection with the exterior and the garden space. An attention was drawn on the combination of existing and new material, showing the diversity and mix-ity as a synthesis of the whole house with its garden in one space. Each element, like the stair, lights, flooring and furniture pieces are thought as a own entity distinguish with the other while in dialogue at the same time. The garden with its growing plants on the red brick wall and the new fences creates a particular quiet enclosed & outdoor space. The warehouse works as an independent appartment with original configuration including red brick covered room with an inclinated stair ramp and another room under the slopping roof.

SUMMER HOUSE - RUPANCO LAKE CHILE

LOCATION: Rupanco lake, Lake region, Chile DURATION: december 2016 - september 2017 ROLE: full process (Design-tendering-contruction follow up) BUDJET: 50000 â‚Ź

Located on the shores of Lago Rupanco, in the lake region of southern Chile, this plot of land is part of a larger portion and is facing South towards the lake. The owner is developing a sustainable Eco-lodge and a permaculture farm project. This particular portion, he sold to a private client and advised him to build with local wood from his forest. The client agreed to a proposition that the house be built by local workers and volunteers of the farm, reducing the global cost and the ecological footprint of the building. In phase one, taking place this year, the first cabin is being built: a 60m2 rectangle, with all the necessary facilities included in the house, i.e. Kitchen,

dining room, bathroom, living room. The South side of the space views Lago Rupanco through a fully glassed facade accompanied with a wooden terrace. Phase two will be the construction of two new cabins on each side of the living room, adding small bedrooms, and a master bedroom. The design links these three volumes with a continued roof, creating extra outdoor covered spaces. Completion for the project is expected in september of 2017. The fast pace of the work included sketch design and cost estimation approved by the client between on January 2017. The construction started mid February 2017 and is ongoing.

YOGA WORKSHOP SPACE - ILE DE RE FRANCE LOCATION: Saint Nazaire, France DURATION: january 2014 - february 2016 ROLE: full process (Design-tendering-contruction follow up) BUDGET: 10000â‚Ź

Willing to create a space dedicated to the practice of yoga, the brief of the client was to build a 20m2 extension of a summer house on the Island de Re, near the French atlantic coast. Due to the strict urbanist rules, the outer design was constructed with a willing to preserve the vernacular architecture of the Island. Criteria included warm colored clay titles, white walls, blue turquoise shutters, banned second floor building, and the use of local limestone.

Therefore, the transformation focused on the interiors atmosphere. The Ceiling shapes a soft curved arch made out of wood planks like an inverted boat hull, identical ones are used as flooring creating a centered and peaceful atmosphere, conductive to the spaces intended purpose. Laterally lit by two bay-windows, the room is West and East oriented. Entry facade is designed out of lime stone and traditionally assembled by a local craftsman.

This project proposes a programatic, spatial and symbolic transformation of the top floors of the office towers of Brussels. It neccessity is carried by the study of the integration of these towers in the city. Due to the brutality of their implementation in the 60’s & 70’s, the systematic monolitic shape, a repetition of the facades and their hermeticism toward the urban life. Raising the question of the symbolic purpurse for the city, we observe that the domination of the skyline by the tertiary sector which came along with the modern age broke with the classical vision of the european city. Only the building of religious nature where allowed to exceed the average sourrounding height, in order to participate to the global expression of the city. On a second step, based on the reference of New York’s public observation decks which, between 1900’s & 1930’s allowed the public access to 14 of the highest summits of the city and on collective programs (theatres, restaurant, cinemas...) dominating the city, and acting as urban Lighthouses. Facing the existing phenomenon of the disaffection of the office spaces in Brussels (1.2 millions unoccupied m2 in 2013) widly involving the office towers.

We observe numerous initiatives of integral renovations of the facade and technics in order to regenerate an economic attraction for the companies and to avoid strategie de réaffectation: a premature demolition. We can observe theses operation happening on average 30 years after the realisation.

Dealing with the phenomenon of the descommisonning of the churches in Brussels, the project propose the creation of a new residential and cultural complex in the southern surburban area of Boitfort, in Brussels. Stimulating a new attraction around a desacralized church in need of important reovation work and structural consolidation for the bell tower.The main intention was to preserve the existing volume and to reconnect its vertical scale(75m at the top of the bell tower) to the horizontal scale of the green and low density residential area. In a first step, the intervention tries to highlight the architectural and spatial qualities of the inner volume: arches, dômes, colonnades, a gigantic headroom and a large attic spaces. The existing space is reassigned to public fonctions: a library, an extension of a existing school, a showroom, artist workspaces, exhibition space in the bell tower and a worship Atelier Logement Guillaume Boulanger - MA2 -choir 2012/2013 space in the former of the church. New housing volumes are grafted to the exisitinng, as outgrowths of the different parts of the church, and anchored into the surrounding residential landscape, fragmenting and requalifying the public space around the church.

Intervention sur l’existant

une nouvelle école publique serait implanté dans l’église fansant face à l’école primaire situé en face. l’implantation des nouveau batiment délimite une nouvelle enceinte et une cour commune .

les deux nouveaux batiments arriere délimitent un parc en polongation du jardin voisin. la circulation automobile est donc detourné mais preservé pour les riverains. 1: Volume existant disposant de qualités spatiales interieur (voute, hauteur suous plafond, combles, colonnade, arc boutant) : conservation au maximum

L’élément situé devant l’église recrée un mini ilôt venant s’accrocher à la tour et requalifier l’ancien parvis par des rues

La nouvelle barre de logement s’implante face à la foret de Soigne suivant la délimitation du muret curviligne et beneficiant d’une orientation sud

le centre de la nef est traversé par une nouvelle circulation transversale qui permet l’accées au fonction publiqueet se prolonge vers le parc en contrabas
