Welcome

2015 Davo and Lindner Album pages now available, please order from the stock list included or buy online.

Welcome to the May issue of Stamp Bulletin. This month sees issues for both Europa and Sepac. In a change to our usual Europa issues, PostEurop provided all participating countries a universal design for the theme ‘Think Green’. This single stamp issue will be released along with our Sepac ‘Seasons’, a four stamp issue using some stunning photography depicting Guernsey scenes during the four seasons.

We are attending the World Stamp Show in New York from the 28th May - 4th June 2016, and issuing a Commemorative Souvenir Sheet, depicting our famous Golden Guernsey Cow.

At the end of the month we are travelling to New York to attend the World Stamp Show. We are issuing a commemorative sheet which depicts our famous Golden Guernsey Cow. The early history of the breed is something of a mystery, however it is thought that the true origins of the Guernsey breed come from the nearby French mainland. The cattle eventually became known as Guernseys when the Royal Guernsey Agricultural Society was formed in 1817, with the specific aim of preserving the beauty of Guernsey cattle. Finally for our Alderney issue we celebrate The Queen’s 90th Birthday. Five of the images show The Queen enjoying her official Birthday celebrations - the Trooping of the Colour and the last image depicts the Queen when she became the longest reigning monarch.

Toilers of the Sea, written by Victor Hugo 150 years ago is a local story about Gilliat, a Guernsey based seafarer, who set out on an ambitious task to win a girls hand in marriage. Illustrator Keith Robinson took on the challenge to depict his dramatic story in a set of six stamps. These fantastic stamps capture the mood and feel of Hugo’s story to a tee.

Victor Hugo: Toilers of the Sea NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.70 Issue date: 6 May 2016

In 1855 Victor Hugo came to Guernsey, a political exile. After a few months he bought Hauteville House and that was his home for the next fourteen years. Hugo found Guernsey an excellent location for writing. He spent almost every morning in his ‘look-out’ at the top of the house. He enjoyed a magnificent view of sky, sea, and the port. Here he was able to resume work on les Misérables and it was published in 1862. He also wrote thousands of verses of poetry (la Légende des siécles, les Chansons des rues et des bois). Apart from writing, he busied himself decorating his house with ancient panels, some of which he decorated himself. Furniture was made, ceilings were lined with antique porcelain, choice tapesteries were hung. With its intricate furnishing and carving Hauteville House began to resemble a Gothic cathedral. In the afternoons Hugo regularly walked to local bays, sometimes to Havelet, on other days to Fermain. He swam, idled in the sunshine, composed verse. In the evenings he regularly visited Juliette Drouet, who lived close by. There they would be joined by Guernsey characters such as Henri Marquand (editor of la Gazette de Guernesey) and John Talbot (editor of the Englishlanguage newspaper The Star). Marquand and Talbot became good friends of Hugo. From them he learned a lot about Guernsey and they were useful allies when Hugo wished to publicise his views. The summer months offered opportunities for coach rides through country lanes and along coastal roads. Hugo had a profound love of the scenery of Guernsey and this is reflected in some of the closing paragraphs of The Toilers of the Sea. Hugo also appreciated the islanders and their love of liberty. He honoured Guernsey’s people by dedicating The Toilers of the Sea to them. “I dedicate this book to the rock of hospitality and liberty, that corner of old Norman soil where dwells that noble little people of the sea, to the island of Guernsey, austere and gentle, my present asylum, my probable tomb.” Also available: Presentation Pack £4.60 Postcard £0.50 A5 Set of Prints x6 £9.99

Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £3.70 Issue date: 25th May 2016

In 2016, we celebrate the occasion of The Queen’s 90th Birthday with a set of stamps depicting Her Majesty on her official birthday. The photographs have been taken during the last five years at the Trooping the Colour ceremony, which marks Her Majesty’s official birthday in June. Our stamps also include an image taken on the day The Queen became Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch. Over the years we have commemorated other significant periods in the Sovereign’s life with Guernsey and Alderney stamps, including the occasion of her 80th Birthday in 2006, where we looked back at Her Majesty’s life and also her special relationship with Guernsey. Perhaps the most memorable visit to the island took place on Monday 9 May 2005, when Her Majesty flew to Guernsey to join islanders in celebration of the 60th year of liberation from occupying German forces. During her visit The Queen, who arrived in St. Peter Port to a fanfare sounded by trumpeters of the Royal Logistic Corps Band, met the heads of Guernsey’s churches and attended the Liberation Day Service. In 2011, we produced a special set of stamps to mark the 85th birthday of The Queen and the 90th birthday of Prince Philip. Carefully selected images were chosen, including Her Majesty and Prince Philip kneeling in prayer during the Silver Jubilee Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, which took place on 7 June 1977. Royal Jubilees are a wonderful celebration of significant periods in monarchs’ reigns and national life. In 2012 Her Majesty became the second UK monarch to celebrate 60 years on the throne. For The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we issued stamps depicting some of the key events, which have taken place since Her Majesty came to the throne. More recently, we released a definitive stamp of the Queen during a visit to Canada in July 2010, as Her Majesty became Britain’s longest reigning monarch and the longest reigning female monarch in world history. The Alderney stamp was issued on 9 September 2015, when The Queen officially superseded Queen Victoria’s reign.

Sepac: Seasons NEW ISSUE: Set of 4 stamps: £2.34 Issue date: 25th May 2016

The island of Guernsey is one of the sunniest places in the British Isles enjoying, on average, around eight hour of daily sunshine in the months of May through to September. But the stunning beauty of this tiny Channel Island is spectacular, whatever the season. We often associate the coming of spring with the appearance of flowers that have lain dormant through the cold winter months. The bright yellow heads of daffodils, large leaved, multicolored tulips and the delicate cup shaped heads of the crocus are often complemented by the beautiful hue of the bluebell. Bluebell Woods, an area situated at the southern end of Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port, could not be more aptly named. A visit in the springtime reveals why – as the secluded woodland floor blooms with a carpet of sweet scented violet blue specimens. Nothing says summer like bright sunshine blazing down on a sandy beach and Guernsey boasts some of the best in the British Isles. Visitors can choose between over twenty five beautiful bays, ranging from picturesque and pebbled to long, flat and sandy expanses. For those who can manage to climb the steep access steps, Petit Port Bay in St Martin offers the fantastic reward of southerly sunshine, soft sand and breathtaking scenery. As the year moves on and autumn rolls round we become aware of the changes happening around us, birds begin to head south and we see the leaves on the trees change colour.

www.guernseystamps.com

In Guernsey there can be no more spectacular display of autumn colours than in the island’s Saumarez Park. The largest on the island, the park houses a range of exotic gardens, including a bamboo walk, a Japanese garden and a camellia lawn along with a picturesque rose garden and a walled garden.

Sheets of 10 £23.40

Winter in the Bailiwick is far from bleak; the season allows us to experience the island at it’s most dramatic. Waves crashing against the coastline are a truly remarkable sight and the lighthouses across the islands remind us of the power and force of nature.
