Inspiration for Life; Excellence in all we do
14th June 2013
Dear Parents/Carers Winners and losers It’s been a week of sports; and as a result, it’s been a week of winners and losers. With this in mind, we kicked off Monday morning with an assembly on losing – ‘Could you be a loser?’. It’s not easy for children to lose but we have a responsibility to teach them the learning behaviours we employ to cope with not winning, for example, humility, respect and resilience. We explored the idea that you’ve got to be ‘in it to win it’ and that it’s far better to be a ‘loser’ than not to have tried at all. Luckily, it was the Britain’s Got Talent Final last Saturday night so the whole theme was explored through that – (please thank Simon Cowell if you see him, our message came through loud and clear). Well done to all the children for being brilliant competitors this week. We are very proud of all the hand shaking and affirmative pats on backs. What stars!

Mandeville Stadium Games 33 children made their way to the Guttman Centre yesterday to take part in the School Sports Finals. As you are aware we sent along 6 teams this year which is the most GUCS have ever sent – just attending the finals placed us in the top 8 out of 38 schools in the Sport’s Partnership - wow, number 1! The results are as follows; Year 5 Badminton came 7th, Year3/4 BISI Badminton came 7th, Year 3/4 Quick Sticks Hockey came 4th and Year 5/6 Netball came 1st – wow, number 2! Brilliant results all round! The Netball team go through to District and County Finals next week (a letter will follow early next week). Mrs Jones also fed back to me that other teachers and adults commented on our team spirit and attitude to sports. They also commented on our skill level. For the children who attended, it illustrated the learning behaviours of dedication/commitment: see, getting up an hour earlier to attend Shuttlecock@8 O’clock does pay off. Practise and perseverance do pay off! I would like to thank parents for their patience at the end of the day yesterday when our coach was badly delayed. We have spoken to the coach company today who extend their apologies for the poor service our children received, and will be compensating the school. EYFS Open Day Look out for the posters for our EYFS Open day, for prospective parents next Tuesday 18th. There are two sessions, 9.30 -11.30 and 1.30 – 3pm. Please come along and meet the new EYFS team from September and see our philosophy of Early Years teaching and learning in practice. Bring a friend and spread the word. Year 1 Phonics Screening Assessment (also applicable to some Year 2) The Phonics Screening Assessment will take place on Monday morning. If you have any queries regarding this, please speak to either Miss Giggins, Mrs Eales or Miss Dearn. Congratulations to everybody who was in the Golden Book this week: Haydn Grenter, Sofia Skilling, Harriette Kitney, Natasha Halliday, Robert Charlton, Lily Culverhouse, Dominic Leverett, Ethan Steele, Ella Nicol, Zadie Smith, Ronnie Bruder, Tyler Glass, Will Holman, Harry Dearn, Tabitha Stork, Amy Norfolk, Genevieve Brand-Benee, Millie Holme, Tyrese Bennett, Mark Samways, Francesca Moore, Poppy Forrest, Liz Wyatt-Day, Charlie Ball, Ollie Downham, Joshua Skilling, Rex Johnson, Yasmin Hawes-Stephens, Libby Howe, Harley Moore, Jenni Baxendale, Vikki Yates, Jessica Adkins, Eric Groves, Oliver Lugg, Freddie Garrad, Ruby Mills, Charlotte Hewett, Izzy Kelsey, Fabia Eugene, Eve Avis, Abigail D’Silva, William Rowles, Jacob Burrell, Joe Steele, Thomas Gaskin, Michael Snelson, Nathan Cronin, Bethany Forrest, Charlotte Yates, Jessie Irwin, Finn Hudson. Attendance With the tummy bugs doing the rounds last week, attendance has been a bit low so no 100% I’m afraid. 6J are top with 98.8%, 5O just behind with 98.5% and Reception in third with 98%. Let’s see if we can bring those percentages back up next week!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS The PTA really need new parent volunteers (particularly from the Early Years and KS1) to join FroGS and help us to organise events. Many of the existing ‘FroGS Team’ have children in their last couple of years at GUCS, so we really need new members. If you are interested in joining us, please feel free to come along to one of our meetings, as we will be thinking about and planning for the next school year’s calendar, or leave a message with the office or speak to one of the existing FroGS Team (see FroGS notice board). Please note our last FroGS Meeting of the academic year is being held on Tuesday 9th July @ 7.30pm (this is a change from previously advertised) – venue to be advised on the school notice board in due course.
Missing Cat – can you help us? Our Black tom cat (Monty) decided to go for a walkabout last Thursday (30 May) and hasn’t been seen since. Monty is black with a few white flecks on his chest. He is a large cat and very friendly. Monty has no collar, but he is micro-chipped. He does have a tendency to be nosey so he may have gone into a shed/garage and we would be grateful if you could have a quick check for us. The house isn’t the same without him and we are desperately missing him. If you have seen him recently or you do find him please could you contact me on 07837841988. Many thanks, Carly Evans Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there! Put your feet up! Pippa
