The Pay-Less Kick the Fat 5K Run/Walk has been chosen by Pika Best of Guam voters as the Best 5K in Guam. It’s also the biggest 5K in Guam, according to Kathy Sgro, Pay-Less chairwoman and executive vice president. This year, more than 4,000 competed in the run/walk. And it’s also much more than a 5K. “This is a family event with lots to do,” Sgro says. “We have live entertainment, cheering squads and a community fair afterward. Before the start of the race this year, there was a Zumba workout to get participants warmed up, and it literally started with a bang, thanks to the fireworks as the race began.”

Founded by Stephen Roberto, Purebred strives to help Guam become a better place through jiu-jitsu by making the community safer and healthier. “Those are all byproducts of the training we do,” Roberto said.

Voted Best Trainer for Pika Best of Guam 2014, Steve Oshiro loads his schedule with eight clients per day, tailoring the activities carefully around each of their fitness goals. He’s worked with Olympic swimmers, mixed martial arts fighters, bodybuilders and marathon runners, but he says 95 percent of his clients are Average Joes and Average Janes. “Training needs to be based on whatever the person’s goal is,” he says. “I think that’s why people come to me. If people have a weight loss or fat loss goal, I will tailor their training to that. … If someone is training for an MMA event, I need to train them accordingly. If someone is training for a physique show, the whole programing is different.”

For more than a decade, the Rick & Ronnie Un-invitational Charity Golf Tournament has brought serious and beginner golfers together for a one-of-a-kind playing experience. “We wanted to take the game of golf and inject a whole lot of other fun into it,” Ronnie Perez said. From obstacles and distractions to the use of Rick and Ronnie’s invention, the “hand wedge,” to play, the uninvitational is the only tournament of its kind. Happening every year, golfers aren’t the only ones who benefit from the tournament: proceeds from the uninvitational go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
