Student Testimonials Applied Social Studies - Sandra Shoer

Art Portfolio Preparation - Mark T Burke

I knew that I wanted to study in the area of Social Care but I was unsure of the course I wanted to do as this area is so broad. I wanted to have a taste of Social Studies and what it contained before I planned on dedicating the next four years of my life to it. I found the course to be more than I expected as the help and support I received throughout the year from members of staff and my lecturers in GTI was amazing and to a very high standard. The course also offered me hands on experience in this area of social care through my work placement which I found of great benefit. This course was a great stepping stone to help me receive a place in third level college. Due to this course I now have a place on a Level 8 course in NUIG where I am continuing my studies in Sociology and Psychology through Arts. I hope you all have the great experience I encountered while studying in the GTI

I always knew I wanted to study at Art college but didn’t have a strong enough portfolio to apply straight after school. After researching the Art Portfolio & Preparation course at GTI I decided to apply. The course was so varied and extensive. It introduced me to many different disciplines and really broadened my horizons within art education. The staff were a great source of encouragement and a great help with the transition I had to make from a second level setting to an independent setting of a studio. The course provided me with a great foundation for four years of Art College which helped me with the development of my own studio. I was well prepared for art college interviews and felt really confident with the portfolio I had created over my year at GTI.

Hairdressing – Natasha Richardson

In September 2010 I began my study as a Journalism student in Galway Technical Institute. I began the year with a sole interest in press journalism, only hoping to improve my writing style and technique, but by May of the following year I had learned so much more. I have had articles published in multiple newspapers, magazines and websites, as well as having a column on the GTI Gazette website, which we founded that same year. My interests quickly broadened into radio presenting, production and sound engineering, all of which have since proven to be invaluable assets to me in my career.

The time I spent in Galway Technical Institute gave me the key skills for the Hairdressing Industry. The teachers are amazing and I believe they gave me the confidence and knowledge to strive forward in my chosen area and become the Hairdresser I am today. I am now self-employed. Even though I still provide Freelance Hairdressing Services to clients, I now work mainly on Photoshoots. This involves styling the hair for publications, promotion and TV. During my time at Galway Technical Institute I was able to take part in numerous extra curricular activities such as Open Days, Fashion Shows and Hair Dressing competitions.

Media – Kelvin Moran

After my year at GTI, I was accepted into the Liberal Arts course in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. I continued my studies in Media & Communications and English. I am now a third year student on Erasmus in Łódź, Poland. None of these opportunities would have been available to me had it not been for Galway Technical Institute. I encourage anyone with an interest in any aspect of the media industry to apply for this Journalism course. It provides practical, hands on experience which is hard to find in any work experience environment or university. You learn a lot about the various fields of media and will make life-long friends with likeminded people.

Security Studies - Piotyr Wasil

Soccer Skills - Patrick Hoban

I’m really enjoying the course. I intend to join the Defense Forces and this course is an ideal preparation for that. There is a really good balance between classroom classes and practical lessons. For two of our subjects, we’ve gone on hiking trips to the Burren and Connemara to learn about outdoor leadership, safety and team working. I’d strongly recommend the course to anyone interested in the Defence Forces, Gardai, or the Security Industry.

My name is Patrick Hoban and I spent two valuable years of my life at GTI. I completed the level 5 Soccer Skills programme in 2010 and level 6 in 2012. During 2011 I played for Bristol City soccer club. It is as a direct result of these two programmes that I am doing what I love best today and that is playing soccer.

Advanced Certificate in Networks & Software Systems – Adeel Gilani Studying at GTI presented me with a unique opportunity to experience and learn from an excellent team of lecturers. Lectures came to life through well planned presentations. The content was interesting, challenging what I already knew and motivating me to learn more. I was inspired by the possibilities of advancing to further learning and through the support and encouragement from the course team I pursued a course in Software Development in GMIT. I have really come into my own here and am currently entered into a competition in which I am confident I will do well. This stemmed from the course content both theory and practice in GTI including Networks, Programming / Object Oriented Programming and Database. I feel this was the foundation on which I have built my current study and I know I will continue to develop this area. I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I am very fortunate to have studied this course and I would recommend it to any prospective student who may have an interest in Programming, Networks or Engineering. You will have no regrets. I certainly didn’t.

Currently I play for Dundalk FC Airtricity League Premier Division in Centre Forward position – number 9. Both programmes at GTI helped me to develop my soccer skills to a professional capacity so that I could progress to where I am now. The tutors I had really helped me to pursue my soccer career. The Sports Psychology and Sports Nutrition modules gave me a better understanding of how to look after my needs and believe in myself more. During my time at GTI, I played for the GTI team and Mervue United in the League of Ireland. I was awarded Player of the Month in July 2013 in the League. I was a nominee for Young Player of the Year 2013 and Galway Bay FM Sports Person of the Year. GTI helped me to develop the selfconfidence, skills and knowledge in order for me to have achieved all this to date.

Fashion Design – Laura Jayne Halton The GTI Fashion Design Course gave me the platform to pursue my passion for luxury fashion design and the confidence to begin building my own brand and label. During my year at GTI, I was a finalist in the Student Designer category at the Golden Egg Fashion Innovation Awards. In addition, I was the winner of the “One to Watch” in association with Image Magazine and one of 9 finalists in the country selected to show at the Peroni Moda Awards at the Powerscourt Centre in Dublin. I am building my brand with confidence since I attended GTI. A recent highlight of my career is being asked to design a dress for the Oscars 2013.

GTI PIANO SUITE HITS HIGH NOTE GTI recently welcomed the arrival of a brand new state of the art Piano Suite at the college. Nine stunning top of the range Yamaha Pianos –crafted from finest rosewood with 88 hammer action velocity sensitive keys to give a natural piano feel have been installed in their very own dedicated studio at Father Griffin Road. Used on a daily 4. basis by Level 5 Music Production students, the Piano Suite is also a valuable enhancement to the School of Music at GTI. Students have been quick to praise this stunning new studio facility, referring to it as a great environment in which to learn piano in a collaborative ensemble environment. Crucially, students are provided with Sennheiser HD-201 headphones with which they can play to the volume of their hearts desire without disturbing other learners on campus. The musically talented learners have access to multiple voices such as piano, strings, guitar and harpsichord to enhance their repertoire.

Each piano hosts a range of effects such as reverb, transposition and feature recording capabilities in order to listen back to how a student plays. Exports of recordings to USB can be made in the form of audio or midi for later production or listening. This feature can also be used to import backing tracks to be used on the piano. There is an auto-play function on each piano which can play songs stored on the piano or midi files imported by the user via USB. Included in all pianos is a metronome which can be activated in order to teach the learner how to play in rhythm to many different time signatures. Included at the player’s feet are 3 pedals, Damper with half pedal effect, Sostenuto and Soft. The Technology at play at this level is cutting-edge within the Music Industry. GTI is justly proud to be at the forefront of innovation as a provider of Music Education in the region. For more information on GTI’s School of Music, contact sarah.farrell@cgvec.ie
