Marius Petipa was convinced that music existed just for dance, and dance - just for ballerinas.

Shostakovich’s second ballet Bolt brings together serious and popular music and dance. The first performance of Bolt in April 1931 at the Leningrad State Academy Theater of Opera and Ballet was also its last. The ballet was forbidden for 30 years.
