Cuvée Rosé, choisie par les meilleurs.

Le Gstaad Palace

ooking back to 108 years of history, 2021 has been one of the most challenging years ever. Our entire family, the Palace Team, partners and friends have mourned the pass away of my father and the world has witnessed a pandemic affecting the lives of so many.

Together, we celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve with elegant dinners and fun-packed kids’ parties. While adventure-seekers hit the slopes, others relish exclusive Spa treatments. Party people can feel the beats again at the GreenGo nightclub; early risers can greet the day by diving into the newly renovated indoor pool.

Since the time has come to look more optimistically into the future, we are truly glad to know that almost all of our dear guests may travel again. As a family-owned hotel, we strive to be a place where generations come together to relax and enjoy. A place to unwind, to enjoy nature, to make new friends, to have fun and indulge.

Rest assured, our «Equipe» is dedicated to your well-being and to keeping you safe at all times. Let us turn our Castle, into your Castle. Sincerely,

Andrea Scherz

PS: Following the Covid Certificate rule in Switzerland, the doors of our castle are open for you if you’re vaccinated, recovered or tested.

As we continue to adapt to a very volatile situation, we may have to adjust the programme to new policies and restrictions.

T I WILL BE BACK Ernst A. Scherz 5 July 1939 – 13 May 2021

Thanks to his parents’ good connections, EAS got a place at Le Rosey boarding school, where he met Prince Aga Kahn, who later asked him to join him in building the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. EAS’s wife Shiwa was always by his side. In 1968 he received an urgent call from his father in Gstaad: “Ernst, I need your help!” This marked the beginning of a remarkable success story. EAS created a wonderful home for his wife and his sons, Thierry and Andrea, close to the Palace in Chalet Mandi.

he death of Ernst Andrea Scherz had a profound impact, not only on his family. The hotel also received countless expressions of sympathy, consternation and solidarity from all over the world. His maxim, which he shared with everyone he knew, offers solace: “I will be back.”

Ernst Andrea Scherz, known as EAS, also lived by this distinctive motto. The first memories of this exceptional individual date back to the war years – and involve butter and cars. For example, Ernst’s father once brought a substantial chunk of butter home to Chalet Bärglimatt, but before the family knew it, the cheeky scamp had devoured the whole thing!

But there is no sun without shadow: At far too young an age, his wife Shiwa fell ill with cancer. For seven years, EAS devoted himself to caring for her. In the following years he was not always so lucky in love. But one good thing came out of this turbulent period – his son Chris. Finally, in 2004, he met his present wife, Yana, with whom he enjoyed many fulfilling and happy years.

EAS also took a shine to anything that was mechanical and motorised. When he was just a whippersnapper during the war, his father sometimes took the car for an illicit spin to the Oberbort district of Gstaad, and little Ernst would go with him – standing on the back seat of course. But the two of them had not reckoned with chickens on the road…

Ernst Andrea Scherz was a loving and generous man. He was someone who always bounced back, who got things done, and fought hard. And, true to his name (“Scherz” is the German word for “joke”), he always enjoyed a laugh. So it is hardly surprising that his obituary notice ends on a humorous note: “It was wonderful! I will be back.”

Young Ernst was not quite so earnest when it came to his studies. He often only learned his French vocabulary on the way to school in Ebnit.

For Madame, Chopard has selected one of its Happy Hearts creations, the collection for women with a big heart, which has become a jewellery icon. Made of 18-carat pink ethical gold, the pendant enhances the shape of the heart, an emblem of the Maison, through a large red heart and a daring mobile diamond. As much a salute to Joie de Vivre as an ode to femininity. For Monsieur, Chopard expresses its passion for motor sports and competition through a pair of stainless steel cufflinks with a palladium finish inspired by a gear lever knob. An essential accessory for contemporary gentlemen who know that elegance lies in the detail. Tables go fast. Book yours now and surprise your loved one later!

arbara Anjos Branco-Schiess born in Frauenfeld/Canton Thurgau works at the Gstaad Palace as Guest Relations Manager and Member of the Management Team. In her private life she loves to read, keeping local traditions alive such as the very unique paper cutting, enjoys hiking in the beautiful nature of Switzerland and is a lover of classic music. Professionally, she loves fulfilling even the most extravagant wishes of our guests.

How did you meet? Barbara: When Luis joined the Palace in December 1999, I immediately fancied him. Obviously, he must have liked me too. We didn’t really become a couple until the “Country Night Gstaad” in September 2000, though. How do you separate work and life? Barbara: Having dinner together is sacred to us. That’s when we decompress and talk about the day. But then there’s always a moment when we stop and say, “Enough shoptalk now.”

Luis Anjos Branco born in Castello Branco in Portugal is a valued Member of our Engineering Team, a classical “All-Rounder”, so to say our very own “MacGyver” as he finds solutions for literally every single technical challenge. Luis is a big fan of “Benfica Lissabon” and just any kind of sports. Among other talents he is especially loved by the entire team for his delicious “Chestnut BBQ” – a typical Portuguese tradition.

Luis: On our day off, we play tennis or cook something special and enjoy just going about our day. Sometimes we go on a short trip to get a different perspective on things. What do you love about each other? Luis: She is honest, straightforward, and responsible.

As a child, Luis wanted to be a football star, Barbara dreamed of being a florist. They have both been working at the Gstaad Palace for over 20 years – and are a dream team outside of work as well.

Barbara: He finds a solution to everything and brings me back down to earth after a hard day. I can rely on him and count on him completely. What is on your bucket list? Luis: I don’t really have an answer to that… certainly whatever Barbara wants to do☺. Barbara: Probably to enjoy life together as long as possible. And to be able to be there for each other.

At the Palace, acting sustainably means...

Our vision is for the long-term. We want to continue welcoming generations of families from all around the world to the Gstaad Palace, so they may benefit from the tranquility, beauty and alpine authenticity of the Saanenland for another 100 years and more. It’s what we’re committed to. Read on to find out at a glance what the Gstaad Palace is doing to ensure it acts responsibly, in economic, ecological as well as social terms.

he Gstaad Palace was built in 1913 – long before the term sustainability became established in its current form and long before anybody talked about such issues. That the Gstaad Palace sees itself as part of Gstaad and its surroundings goes without saying. The drive to act in the interests of nature, people and the environment has quite simply always been in the Palace’s DNA. We know that the true luxury of our establishment lies in the unique nature that surrounds it and in the cordial spirit between our employees and our guests.

And this is just the beginning – please visit

lines – a hallmark of Förg’s technique – and gestural marks are combined with pockets of colour, with some works incorporating a brighter palette and others more muted. In the artist’s own words, ‘I think painting is a resilient practice; if you look through the history of painting it doesn’t change so much and we always see it in the present. It is still now.’

The presentation focuses on the later years of Förg’s artistic production, spanning work from 1997 – 2009. On view are acrylic paintings and photographs, as well as works on paper made using a range of mediums such as oil, ink gouache, pastel and charcoal, highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of his practice. The exhibition coincides with ‘Günther Förg’ at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles (14 September 2021 – 9 January 2022), the first solo exhibition of the artist in Los Angeles.

ABOUT HAUSER & WIRTH IN GSTAAD In 2015, Hauser & Wirth found a home at Vieux Chalet, the former chalet of Gunther Sachs, where the gallery presents an eclectic hanging of modern and contemporary artworks from its roster of artists. Since then, Hauser & Wirth’s activities in the Saanenland - helmed by James Koch, Partner and Executive Director at Hauser & Wirth - have included public installation projects with the Gstaad Palace, featuring outdoor works by Martin Creed and Jenny Holzer.

Born in the region of Allgäu, Germany, Günther Förg was a prolific painter, sculptor, graphic designer, and photographer. His career began in the early 1970s as a student at The Academy of Fine Art Munich. During his studies, Förg painted abstract works almost exclusively in grey and black monochrome.

The Vieux Chalet is open by appointment: +41 79 362 0927 or

In the 1980s, Förg moved away from painting and explored new medium to make works. In particular, he began utilizing photography as a method of ‘working closer to reality,’ stating, ‘what one paints is not reality.’

Förg’s ultimate return to painting at the beginning of the 21st century indicates a full-circle arrival at the medium as an end to experimentation. In these works, patches of grid-like overlapping
