MY GSTAAD

t is more than a family tradition: the passion for classic cars and rallies is deeply instilled into my family’s DNA. Just like my grandparents and parents before me, my idea of pure luxury is driving a perfectly-tuned classic car on a road carved expertly into the mountain scenery.

mountain air, the unique landscape, or the pure authenticity of times past: a lunch up here warms heart and soul  – and the homemade tarte aux fruits, handcrafted from fresh and local fruits, always takes me back into my grandmother’s kitchen.

My favourite route takes you up from Villars to the Col de la Croix. This is an essential climb for cyclists and motor lovers alike. With an altitude change of nearly 1,200 meters, it is one of the toughest passes in Switzerland. As you climb up to Gryon, you are treated to a majestic view of the Grand Muveran – and then you can treat yourself to at the Restaurant Refuge de Taveyanne.

You see, we at the Gstaad Palace embrace innovation and strive to always be one step ahead; but we are old-timers at heart, always thankful for the privileges our unique region has gifted to us. This may explain my family’s passion for classic cars, too: we admire the courage and expertise that drove the classic car designers to create and innovate; at the same time, we live in great respect for nature and tradition.

Here, you can enjoy the quaint simplicity of an antique chalet where delicious meals are created entirely without the help of electricity. The charbonnade, my personal favourite, is a steak you cook yourself on a traditional charcoal table grill, and enjoy with delicious potatoes and a variety of salads. I don’t know whether it’s the fresh

Whether you want to embark on a family hike up to the Lauenensee or take part in the Gstaad Palace- Challenge rally, sample the latest spa trends or experience the authentic Walig hut: our summer programme offers something for everyone, whether young or young at heart. Come and join us!

We at the Gstaad Palace are very proud to be part of this exquisite club, albeit for a few days only: our chefs have been invited to London where they will spoil club members with their supreme delicacies from 9 to 11 May. arts and fine living in general. If you’re already a member, you are one of the lucky few. Aspiring members should anticipate a waiting period of approximately nine months … but don’t despair! You can always enjoy our chefs’ creations here, at the Gstaad Palace – and combine the experience with a rally-style ride up and down our beautiful mountain roads.

GSTAAD PALACE-CHALLENGE 2019 The Rally for Ambitious Bon Vivants

rom 30 August to 1 September 2019, fans of sophisticated car culture rejoice: as the Gstaad Palace-Challenge goes into its fourth year, fantastic cars, challenging roads, and breathtaking views await once again. “We give ambitious drivers the opportunity to prove their skills and show off their precious cars”, says Andrea Scherz, General Manager of the Gstaad Palace. In addition to the unique driving experience, culinary treats cater to the modern bon vivants’ needs. Sponsored by the Banque Privée Edmond de Rothschild and Chopard, the event is as exclusive as it is exquisite. FRIDAY: A COMPETITIVE START

On the morning of Friday, 30 August 2019, participants begin with the official scrutineering. After a welcome lunch

buffet at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Montreux, the rally starts with a competitive drive over beautiful mountain passes to Gstaad, followed by a dinner at the Gstaad Palace. Please note: the faster you are today, the better you are off tomorrow  – Friday’s results determine Saturday’s starting numbers. SATURDAY: MAKE IT COUNT

After a sumptuous breakfast, things get serious again: the ambitious route takes you through the Jura region towards Fleurier, where drivers are invited for lunch at the legendary Maison Chopard. On the way back to Gstaad, the roads across the beautiful Bernese Seeland region put cars and drivers through their paces. This is your last chance, so better make it count! Back at the Gstaad P alace, the award ceremony and yet again a delicious dinner take place – winners each receive a watch by Chopard.

9

The rally is limited to just 30 cars, and only classic car models from 1950 to 1986 are admitted to the race. Are you intrigued? Apply today! Email us at gpc@palace.ch, and we will gladly send you more information and answer any questions you may have.

THE SCHERZ FAMILY Three Generations of Car Lovers

he Scherz family has had a passion for elegant cars since the 1930s. Two generations ago, Ernst Scherz was the first person to own a Chevrolet Corvette in Switzerland, and he seldomly missed a chance to take part in local Concours d’Élégance events. His passion did not extend to racing, though: he deemed the Ferrari 275 GTB he once bought from a good friend far too loud and slightly too strong. He quickly sold it – for the incredible amount of 14,000 Swiss francs … today, it would be worth around 2.5 million francs.

INSPIRED BY SPEED AND ELEGANCE

It comes as no surprise, then, that Ernst and Silvia’s son, Ernst Andrea, has been celebrating a love for beautiful cars all his life; nor that he passed it on to the next generation. Inspired by this legacy and the beautiful terrain around Gstaad, Andrea Scherz – General Manager of the hotel since 2001 – is proud owner of a small collection of classic cars. From his grandmother, he inherited a need for speed: he’s a regular competitor in challenging rallies like the Flying Scotsman, or his very own creation, the Gstaad Palace-Challenge

SILVIA SCHERZ-BEZZOLA: A TRUE CAR PIONEER

Weekend des Vétérans

While Ernst Scherz never took part in a race, his wife Silvia Scherz-Bezzola was fascinated by speed. She regularly sped her Simca Cabriolet up and down the mountain roads – and it had been her, too, who first learned to drive a car and later taught her husband. As owners of the famous Waldhaus Flims hotel, her parents were among the very early adopters of the new technology.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE WALL…

Elevation 1049: Frequencies – Mirage Gstaad by Doug Aitken irage Gstaad, a new outdoor site-specific sculpture by Los Angeles-based artist Doug Aitken will be on view in Gstaad until January 2021. The work is part of Elevation 1049: Frequencies, the third iteration of the winter arts biennial in Gstaad. In the tradition of land art as a reflection of the dreams and aspirations projected onto the American West, Mirage Gstaad presents a continually changing encounter in which subject and object, inside and outside are in constant flux. With every available surface clad in mirror, it both absorbs and reflects the landscape around it in such ways that the exterior will seemingly disappear just as the interior draws the viewer into a never-ending kaleidoscope of light and reflection. As Mirage Gstaad pulls the landscape in and reflects it back out, this classic one- story suburban house becomes a framing device, a perceptual echo chamber endlessly bouncing between the dream of nature as pure uninhabited state and the pursuit of its conquest. Situated against the backdrop of Videmanette in Gstaad, Mirage Gstaad will bring the idea of the Manifest Destiny

and the American West into contact with the European landscape and the tradition of the sublime. ACCESS

By train: arrival at Schönried or Gruben train station and then by foot via hiking trail: from Schönried: 20 min, from Gruben: 15 min

Gallery in London, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Aitken earned the International Prize at the Venice Biennale for the installation Electric Earth, the 2012 Nam June Paik Art Center Prize, and the 2013 Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award: Visual Arts. Schönried
