WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY

STUDIES

What is Work Health and Safety? Work Health and Safety is the practice of ensuring the safety health and welfare of all people engaged in work or employment. WHS, or Work Health and Safety, replaces the former terminology Occupational Health and Safety although both the terms OHS and WHS are interchangeable and mean the same thing in the workplace. The Work Health and Safety training package has been implemented in response to changes in legislation toward a harmonised national legislative framework. Today, Work Health and Safety impacts on every workplace in Australia. A WHS practitioner in the workplace is involved in processes to ensure that any work undertaken is done so in a healthy and safe manner. The entry-level course to WHS is the Certificate III in Work Health and Safety.

How is training delivered?

How we support our learners

Courses are offered in a flexible online environment where learners can work at their own pace anywhere in Western Australia. Have you ever imagined yourself studying at the beach, in a cafĂŠ or in the comfort of your own home?

Periodically, we offer face-to-face workshops held here at GSIT as well as drop-in sessions to enable learners to maintain face-to-face contact with their lecturer and other learners. Email and telephone help desk support is available for all learners to communicate directly with a lecturer. All you need to do is call and we will help you with understanding any of the course requirements. Once you have commenced your study, direct contact with your lecturer is available through course messaging.

Online studies with Great Southern Institute of Technology Online study is a convenient and flexible way of completing an accredited course without having to attend classes. You can work through activities and assessments at home from your own computer. To study online you will need to have access to a computer and the internet. Once you have enrolled, you will receive an introductory email containing information on how to begin your online studies. You will have access to our online learning site, where you will be able to view all assessments and communicate with your lecturer. Enrolment in online studies is on a part-time basis of one or two units at a time. You work at your own pace which gives you the flexibility to work as fast as you wish. Online enrolments are on a continual basis which means when a unit of study is completed, enrolment in the next unit can occur. Each enrolment is current for six months from that enrolment date, but we do encourage you to complete it as soon as you can and move onto the next unit – this way you can achieve your qualification sooner. It is important to remember you are not alone with online studies! Your lecturer is available for advice, feedback on assessments and general help via the online learning site, email, phone and for personal one-onone appointments.

Recognition of Prior Learning Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal acknowledgement of your current skills and knowledge obtained through previous life experiences, education and training or work experience (paid and unpaid). It does not depend on how, when, where or why the skills and knowledge were obtained. RPL assessment can result in credit for a unit within a course, or entry to a course. It is based on evidence provided by the applicant. You may enrol for RPL at any time, but it is preferable to do so before the course or unit starts. This means you do not have to be enrolled in the unit before applying for RPL.
