6 Greater Hamilton Regional Planners Guide

The Greater Hamilton region is perfectly placed to bring people together and is closer than you think, with ten unique towns and villages to choose from and explore beneath the stunning Grampians National Park.

HAMILTON Hamilton, both the geographic and business hub of the region, has been the centre of a large and wealthy pastoral industry for over 160 years and has grown to become a thriving regional city. Exhibiting style and quality, with excellent boutique shopping, diverse architecture, an outstanding art gallery and stunning botanic gardens, this gracious city offers a first class experience for your delegates.

BALMORAL Featuring a wonderful public art installation, the village of Balmoral is a historical, pastoral and recreational centre with a country community just waiting to welcome you. Home to an Easter market and annual country show, surrounded by State forests, Balmoral is only a short drive from the Rocklands Reservoir, the perfect spot for a day of fishing, boating, camping, horse-riding, and more.

BRANXHOLME Here you will find historic pastoral homesteads, luscious gardens and a quaint local hotel in a town surrounded by fertile soils. The perfect space to take a breather underneath the large shady trees, camp under the stars, watch a local game of country football or attend the annual rodeo.

BYADUK

CAVENDISH

PENSHURST

From home cooked goodness to a warming whiskey, the welcoming village of Cavendish is situated in the heart of the region’s thriving pastoral industry. Explore one of the region’s best kept secrets, the Settlers Walk, wander through giant red gums along the banks of the Wannon River or hit a picturesque round of golf in nearby Mooralla.

From learning about the volcanic history of the region at the Volcanoes Discovery Centre to climbing Mt Rouse for panoramas of the Kanawinka Geopark, or taking a gentle stroll through a natural wetland, the town of Penshurst has many attractions for the region’s visitors.

COLERAINE With a significant Eucalyptus arboretum, historic railway station, the township of Coleraine is also home to wonderful gastronomic delights including Glenelg Fine Chocolates. The region has a very distinct history to explore and many events well worth a visit including the Australian Pedal Car Grand Prix and the country show.

DUNKELD At the foot of Mount Sturgeon, the southern tip of the Grampians Ranges, you will find the charming village of Dunkeld. This thriving community offers exceptional food and wine experiences including the award winning Royal Mail Hotel, and a stunning Arboretum as well as wonderful art, history and nature based activities.

GLENTHOMPSON

TARRINGTON Steeped in German settler history and host of exciting annual events, the village of Tarrington is a destination with plenty of surprises. Named Hochkirch by its German settlers in 1853, Tarrington is known for its award winning pinot noir, Laternenfest and singing!

A town with a great heartbeat, boasting a rich agricultural history and renewable future. With arguably the best views of the entire southern range of the Grampians National Park, Glenthompson is also just a 3 km drive from the Oaklands Hill Wind Farm where visitors will find 32 wind turbines dotted across the landscape.

Home of the Byaduk Caves, curious stacked Tumuli and sweeping Harman’s Valley, only a short distance from Mount Eccles and Mount Napier. An intriguing find in this village is the popular Byaduk General Store, showcasing an eclectic collection of gifts, clothing and antiques.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

Grampians Retreat Team Building Group Initiatives or Challenges - these activities are designed to increase a participant’s ability to be an effective member of a group. They are a series of tasks which require the input of the whole group in order to solve a particular physical challenge. These initiatives bring out leadership skills and personal achievements. Rogaining - a map navigational exercise for teams, involving reading of grid references and finding locations which hold signage at certain points of the area. The secret to Rogaining is planning your route before embarking, to achieve the highest possible score. Unholy Alliance - (4 way tug of war). An excellent, very energetic competitive group activity with lots of laughs to be had by all. Four teams compete hauling one of four pulling ropes attached to a centre ring. Is it pure physical strength or methodology? Archery & the Low Ropes Challenge Course, Giant Swing - Team building sessions can be incorporated into these. …And what better end to a day by being under the stars at the campfire, after some darkness challenges and reflector trails!

The first plantings at the site took place in 1870, but a more formalised plan was developed a decade later by William Guilfoyle, the curator of the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. With its towering oaks and manicured lawns, the Hamilton Botanic Gardens blend English-style grandeur with a strong welcoming feel. Explore a range of historical sites including the caretakers cottage, a band rotunda (c.1900), a 1920 memorial fountain and a canon from the HMVS Nelson (c.1860s). Throughout the seasons the Gardens are open every day. A: T: W:

Lake Hamilton

Wannon and Nigretta Falls

Lake Hamilton is a 38 hectare area built in 1977 by the damming of the Grange Burn.

Just 20 km west of Hamilton lie two exceptional waterfalls, Wannon and Nigretta.

Surrounded by an excellent 4.4 km walking/cycling track the lake is also used for a range of activities including water-skiing, rowing, sailing, yachting and fishing, and many events.

The Wannon Falls feature a spectacular 30m vertical precipice of hardened basalt lava over which water cascades into a deep plunge pool. A viewing platform offers stunning views and a rotunda features interpretative signage covering geology, flora and fauna, koori history and details of colonial artists.

Located on the east side of the lake is the Lakes Edge Adventure Playground. The design incorporates a strong stone, water and timber theme reflecting Hamilton’s unique natural environment. This ultimate play space offers over 90 elements which work together to create a space to play, learn and discover suitable for all ages and abilities.
