Point Lonsdale Lighthouse
Welcome to Geelong and The Bellarine, an area outgrowing its industrial past and evolving into an easily accessible visit of reinvented spaces, world-class food and wine, wildlife, adventure, big city and small villages, a burgeoning cultural scene and water everywhere you look. H E R E , T H E R E , E V E RY W H E R E If you stood in the middle of the Geelong Waterfront precinct you’d feel invigorated by the sea breeze, intrigued by public art, impressed by the mix of heritage and modern architecture and inspired to fill your tummy at any of the eateries within smelling distance.
Turn east toward The Bellarine and the best of bay and ocean beaches, saltwater-bathed villages and green hills full of farm gates, cellar doors and outrageous fun. In every direction there are incredible experiences to try, from giant waterslides and swimming with wildlife to indulgent dinners and hand-crafted wine. However you define a good time, we’ll point you in the right direction. 360Q, Queenscliff Harbour
Across Corio Bay your view to the north will include the outline of the You Yangs, a monument to the natural exhilaration their peaks and the surrounding precinct offers. To the west, beyond the vibrant urban eat / drink / shop playground of Pakington Street are rural plains, the Moorabool Valley, growing some of the best produce and wine in Australia. Look south and within a few blocks there are clever and creative precincts to indulge all the senses. Further beyond, find another waterbased playground at the Barwon River.

GROWERS Let things taste of what they are - ALICE WATERS
Everything tastes better where it’s grown. Handcrafted and lovingly harvested produce is available at farm gates and cellar doors across the region where often the person behind the counter is the same person out in the field. There’s an earthiness about it all, a warmth and down-to-earth feel and the things grown here have personality that’s evident in the eating. Fresh is a term that’s thrown around a lot, but it doesn’t get any fresher than where it was grown or made. That’s the beauty of visiting a region of makers and growers – food miles become food metres as you pick up eats direct from where they were picked, prepped or cooked.
Olive groves at Lighthouse Olive Oil and Manzanillo Grove invite you to taste their award-winning oil in the middle of the groves responsible for the fruit. Moorabool Valley Chocolate is perfect for some take home treats or a sweet afternoon tea. Try goats cheese from Drysdale Cheeses or Meredith Dairy and cured butter from Lard Ass found at your local stockists, you’ll never go back. They say 60 per cent of the country's mussels are farmed off northern Bellarine, there’s nothing fresher than from the farm at the Little Mussel Café. TO M A R K E T, TO M A R K E T
E AT On The Bellarine, tantalise your taste buds with berries from Tuckerberry Hill, truss tomatoes and herbs from Lonsdale Tomato Farm and Farmer's Harvest sell vegies and fruit and often other produce from nearby like breads, dairy goods and olive oil.

DRINK At Little Creatures Brewery in South Geelong, the full range of beers is available on tap and a great range of food is available from the busy canteen. Brewery tours give a great behind-the-scenes insight (and smell and taste) of the magic that is beer. Next door, sister White Rabbit Brewery resides. It’s Geelong done a little differently. In the middle of The Bellarine, Flying Brick Cider House exhibits various flavours and fruit. Tasting paddles will let you sample to find your favourite – then you can take home 1.8 litres of it in your own, refillable growler. Gin anyone? A Bellarine hotspot that’s become a favourite is The Whiskery. Starting with their own gins – Teddy and the Fox and Rosey and the Rabbits – whiskys (which take much longer to distill) are busy being perfected.
Wine is more than a drink in these parts, it’s an experience. On the northern Bellarine, wine is served with a side of stunning water views. At places like Oakdene and McGlashan's the cellar door visit is enhanced by art, sculpture and vintage cars. At Leura Park Estate you can take a Segway tour among the vines. Austins Wines are having loads of fun with their 6ft6 range and, one of our faves, Frosé. In the past year around the region we’ve had yoga and movies in the vines, a wine-fuelled fun run, cooking classes and gardening workshops – there will be plenty more to do and drink this year too. TA S T Y T R A I L S Perhaps the best way to discover the bounty of our region is by exploring a particular area and taste trail. The Bellarine Taste Trail: Spread across The Bellarine, it takes in vineyards in glorious locations near the coast (often with breathtaking views of the water) as well as other favourites on the drinks list: cider, gin and whisky. Makers and growers are rearing or crafting deliciousness in all parts of these rural / coastal spots and if you’re not grabbing it on your tour fresh from the farm, there’s every chance you’re being served it in an eatery you’ve discovered along the way.
The Moorabool Valley Taste Trail: In the Moorabool Valley, some of Australia’s best regarded wineries craft their exquisite drops among the hills, valleys and plains around Ceres, Inverleigh, Bannockburn, Meredith and Anakie. You’ll find everything from 97 point-score Pinot Noir to a fun Frosé (like a slurpee, but wine. Best.) For foodies there’s cheese, eggs, meat, olives, chocolate, fruit and vegetables at various points of the trail. There’s also a Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday of the month in Bannockburn.
A highlight is the famous Portarlington mussels, grown in waters visible along the coastline. And make sure to check out the Bellarine Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of the month in Ocean Grove.

At Portarlington, the Miniature Railway is a sweet ride near the water and in Geelong a mini train chugs between the Carousel and Eastern Beach on weekends and holidays.
S C H O O L’ S O U T If you don’t tell the kids it’s educational, they’ll never know. It’s learning disguised as fun and there are lots of ways to get an A+ in Geelong and The Bellarine. The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre is six levels of brilliance. Inside, there’s a whole level for kids that includes big squishy cushions to curl up with a book in, quiet games and toys and a tech section where Minecraft is frequently played on a giant screen on the wall. Brilliant. Next door, the Geelong Gallery has a craftily engaging seasonal children’s program for all young people and interpretation of exhibitions designed for kids. Museums across the region have a particular focus on fun learning for kids.

Creativity is contagious, pass it on - ALBERT EINSTEIN
Did you know some of the earliest refrigeration was invented in Geelong? Or that Australia’s first decimal currency was designed by a Geelong boy? The rotary clothes line too? James Harrison, Stuart Devlin and Gilbert Toyne couldn’t have known it at the time, but their clever and creative pursuits were part of the reason Geelong was recognised by UNESCO as Australia’s first and only City of Design, part of the Creative Cities Network, in 2017. The creative community of Geelong is thriving and is still deeply connected to those design roots. Creative use of industrial spaces sees bars, breweries, eateries and galleries where manufacturing production lines once stood. Festivals and events are celebrating culture, food, music and performance.

C U LT U R A L LY C R E AT I V E The cultural precinct, at the west end of Little Malop Street, is the hub for this clever and creative city. The Geelong Gallery is cementing its position as a leading regional gallery with another year of outstanding exhibitions. None more so than Geelong’s very own Rone, revolutionising the Gallery space in 2020.
The Geelong Arts Centre has just undergone a $38.5 million redevelopment which includes new rehearsal and performance studios and new entry foyer and hospitality spaces, enhancing its program of theatre, dance, comedy, music and more. The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, most striking as the shiny dome building alongside Johnstone Park, has become a magnificent resource. More than borrowing books, it’s a wonderful space to take in words in many ways. Particular highlights are the family level, the archives and the balcony on Level 5 with incredible views to Corio Bay. The Pivotonian Cinema is Geelong’s only independent cinema, screening a range of arthouse and hand-picked titles. Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre is an insight into indigenous spirit, culture and connection to the land. There’s a gallery, retail area and the café. Boom Gallery in Newtown and Queenscliff Gallery and Workshop offer hands-on activities in onsite learning centres. D I S COV E R T H E PA S T Historically, Geelong was a wool centre where farms from the western districts sold and shipped their wool. Naturally the National Wool Museum keeps that history alive alongside an impressive program of other events and exhibitions. Also a significant piece of history but for all the wrong reasons, the Old Geelong Gaol opens regularly for tours. For an invigorating piece of Geelong history, the Geelong Botanic Gardens (established in 1851) includes significant trees, formal plantings and a drought tolerant modern garden area.

GEELONG Better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times - ASIAN PROVERB
There’s much more to Geelong than a pretty waterfront but that’s a good place to start. It’s the backdrop to a schedule of lively events and the giant floating Christmas tree each year. Places to walk, sit, play, eat and explore all co-exist or just marvel at the views. There’s public art scattered throughout the precinct, perhaps best known for the Bollards, the colourful characters who give insight into the historic events and people who shaped the city. Some of the Bollards have had some work done and can come to life, with an augmented reality project telling you their personal stories with voice and animation. Dowload the Activate Geelong App. CENTR AL GEELONG A stone’s throw from the water, the central Geelong precinct has countless great places to eat up the street and down the alleys – that includes fish and chips by the water or fine dining venues with fabulous wine lists. Services and shops can be found in the centre of town, including Market Square Shopping Centre which has the most central post office and a Visitor Information counter. The centre of the city has a cultural precinct featuring the excellent Geelong Gallery, the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre (as impressive inside as its exterior) and the newly redeveloped Geelong Arts Centre. City Hall and the Old Post Office lend an air of history and grandeur to the area while street-art murals give a modern twist. Little Malop Street is the hot destination for food and drinks, but the question is; what to choose first?

You Yangs Regional Park Serendip Sanctuary
NORTHERN EXPOSURE To the north of Geelong there are mountains of fun. We call them the You Yangs. The entire precinct is perfect for invigorating adventures in natural environments, either on two legs or two wheels. The 50km of mountain bike trails in the You Yangs Regional Park offer a challenge for all abilities. There are regular events for bike and hike enthusiasts too. Elsewhere in the park, tracks and trails lead to spectacular views (especially at the Flinders Peak summit) for walkers and trail runners alike. As a regional park, it’s dog-friendly so your fur baby can tackle the trails too. The area has significant indigenous history. In fact, even the name You Yangs comes from the Aboriginal word ‘Wurdi Youang’ or ‘Ude Youang’ meaning big mountain in the middle of the plain. There’s evidence in the park of water wells and Bunjil the geoglyph is a huge sculpture, visible from above, of the mythical creature celebrating local Aboriginal connections. During school holidays Parks Victoria run a junior ranger program with indigenous insights from around the park and it’s free.
The You Yangs and nearby Serendip Sanctuary are home to a host of native animals including kangaroos, echidnas, koalas, emus and more than 200 species of birds. To plan your trip to any of the Parks Victoria locations visit: parkweb.vic.gov.au In Lara there’s a museum, walking and cycling trails and gardens like Yarrabee Native Garden and the excellent Roraima Nursery. Also nearby, the Brisbane Ranges National Park is great for bushwalking and wildlife spotting. This area hosts some impressive events with the biennial Australian International Airshow at Avalon Airport and the annual Lara Food and Wine Festival every March.
Check out juniorrangers.com.au for more information. Roraima Nursery 61

THE BELLARINE If happiness is the goal - and it should be, then adventures should be a priority - RICHARD BRANSON
The waters around The Bellarine are more than just a pretty place. They’re perfect for water-based adventures from paddling and stand-up paddleboarding on the gentle waters to surfing and boarding on the southern surf side. There are boat ramps everywhere from Clifton Springs to Barwon Heads to launch a fishing expedition, as well as rock pools to ramble and shallows to snorkel. On land, there are sandcastles for days and long, sandy stretches for sunrise or sunset walks. L O O K I N WA R D Away from the beach, hills and paddocks are filled with vines and produce that make a delicious day out. Wallington is a family affair with Adventure Park, a giant maze and mini golf to keep kids busy. There are loads of great places to stay around these parts too. From intimate cottages at The Nest and McGlashan's Estate to the epic park at BIG4 Bellarine or for a decadent experience, the breathtaking Campbell Point House nestled on the banks of Lake Connewarre. There really is a bed for every head. For the more serious golfer, four of the best public golf courses in Australia are in this neat little package, The Bellarine. What a winner.

S A I L AWAY
On the north side of The Bellarine, Portarlington has the gentle lapping of clear waters of Port Phillip Bay on its shores. Just up the hill, the street has a strip of cafés, bakeries and take away – a donut anyone?
The best views of Melbourne are from a distance, and that’s certainly true of Portarlington. On a clear day, the skyline is visible on the horizon just across the bay only 43km away.
MUSSEL UP Some of its most famous residents are also its most delicious, with Australian Blue Mussels grown just offshore and harvested by the fleet moored in the harbour. They’re celebrated every year at the Portarlington Mussel Festival on the second Saturday in January. Little Mussel Café is also located just up the street for a sample or two with your view.
Port Phillip Ferries are taking advantage of that proximity with daily services between Portarlington and Docklands in Melbourne for both commuters and leisure travellers. It’ll feel even closer when you’re taking advantage of the licensed café and free Wi-Fi onboard during the 80 minute trip.
Portarlington National Celtic Festival
F E S T I VA L F O L K On the June Queen’s Birthday weekend, the National Celtic Festival spends four days celebrating spirit and culture with music, dancing, food, drinks and good craic.
DRINK IT IN Some of the best vineyards and cellar doors of The Bellarine share these gorgeous shores and are only a few minutes drive from the centre of town. T H E O T H E R G R E AT R OA D T R I P The coastal road from Portarlington to St Leonards is glorious, hugging the water closely and showing off big blue skies and clear, calm water.
At St Leonards there’s a pub on the corner and an array of shops and eateries up the street including Wildings, a kitchen store of fresh made deliciousness you can take and make. 73

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax - MARK BLACK

There are two ways into Queenscliff. One is from Geelong via the Bellarine Highway which leads to The Narrows, a skinny strip of land bound by Swan Bay and Port Phillip Bay that carries both the road and rail tracks.
Alongside the ferry terminal, Queenscliff Harbour is the starting point for many a seaborne adventure. Fishing charters head out to drop a line in the bay or in the deeper waters of Bass Strait. Sea All Dolphin Swims cruise from the harbour to locations in Port Phillip Bay where wildlife can be spotted, either on or in the water. Divers will depart headed for seawalls or sunken sites that are home to diverse and colourful marine life.
An avenue of tall trees form a green guard of honour and you know you’re headed somewhere special. The other is on board Searoad Ferries, the car and passenger ferry from Sorrento. It’s a stunning journey to enjoy the views and the onboard café while your car is parked below deck, hassle free. At the terminal, RoRo Café is a great option while you wait for your ferry (they depart every hour, on the hour) or just for good food.
Also at Queenscliff Harbour there are a couple of boutiques and options to eat and drink including 360Q and Charlie Noble. STEAM AHEAD Queenscliff Train Station is the kicking off point for our favourite party, The Blues Train. Operating most weekends from August to May, it’s a rocking good time. As the vintage steam train chugs across The Bellarine to Drysdale, revellers swap carriages (and therefore musicians) four times along the way. By day this precinct is home to Bellarine Railway, offering regular heritage vintage train trips including special occasion trains such as A Day Out With Thomas and Santa.
O L' DA M E In central Queenscliff, architecture nods to the town’s history as a fashionable seaside destination early last century. Grand hotels with majestic turrets sit alongside quaint cottages. Tours from the visitor centre give insight into the history of the town, as does the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum, Fort Queenscliff and the Historical Museum. The area around the fort overlooks the entrance to Port Phillip Bay and the lookout is perfect for watching ships come and go. There is a collection of galleries with exciting programs such as Salt Contemporary Art Gallery and Queenscliff Gallery and Workshop and more than a couple of good places to eat and stay. BIG4 Beacon Resort is one of the best with a range from powered sites to luxury villas. Find more eating and sleeping recommendations at visitqueenscliff.com.au or at the local visitor centre.
Salt Art Gallery
UP THE STREET Hesse Street is the main strip with shops ranging from top quality local produce to fashion and gifts. CafĂŠs and restaurants often have an alfresco section for a side of 'vitamin d' with your tea. Around the corner toward the beach, Queenscliff Brewhouse has the biggest range of drinks (over 1,000 to choose from), as well as an onsite microbrewery and distillery and regular live music. Fancy making your own, gin masterclasses are on offer at the Brewhouse.

Point Lonsdale Lighthouse
There’s something intoxicating about Point Lonsdale. Some may say it’s the dream position at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay where you can watch the seaborne world come and go while you relax on the beach. Or the stroll to the formidable lighthouse.
GUIDING LIGHT Overlooking The Rip – a treacherous stretch of water for ships navigating the narrow gap between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean – the horizon is dominated by the Lighthouse. It stars in many an Instagram post about Point Lonsdale and is often open for tours for the lofty views from the top.
ON SHORE Below, there’s usually a keen fisherman casting a line from the pier in any weather and on a warm day there’ll be kids playing under it. Nearby, there are rock pools to explore and opposite the main street there’s a shady playground with epic water views. Just out of town there’s a golf course and nearby, some wineries and farm gates. 81

T IM E F O R A L I T T L E ' R& R ' Speaking of sleeping, Lon Retreat and Spa launched in late 2018 on the edge of town and is a breathtakingly beautiful place to lay your head (whether to sleep or have a massage). Our favourite room has an enormous round bath with views to the sand dunes, the lighthouse and the ocean beyond. And, exhale.
There’s loads to look at below the water surface too – there are more varieties of marine life in southern Port Phillip Bay than the Great Barrier Reef, so bring your snorkel. West of the lighthouse there’s pounding surf and even if you’re not into board riding, the sound fills the air and captivates your imagination. It’s the perfect melody to fall asleep by.

G E T I N T H E G R OV E The 10km stretch of sand and fun waves have been bringing families to Ocean Grove for generations. It’s the ideal spot for a beach getaway where you can have salt-air in your hair and still be near the shops and eateries of The Terrace, Grubb Rd and Shell Rd. It’s big enough to have a great selection but small enough to still feel like a relaxed holiday town. O C E A N E S C A PA D E S If you’re travelling with kids it’s the perfect base for ocean adventures mixed with landbased family fun. Main Beach is patrolled in summer and surf schools operate there regularly. If you don’t know your goofy foot from your mal, they’ll get you up on your feet in no time. In 2019 the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club reopened after a multi-million dollar facelift. Within its confines is The Dunes Café. What’s more coastal café then dabbling in your side of chips whilst watching old mate catch a wave as the endless ocean roles in.
A DV E N T U R E T IM E Big days out are available nearby at Wallington with Adventure Park, Bellarine Adventure Golf and A Maze 'n Games all within 10 minutes. Flying Brick Cider House is not far away and while the grown ups will love sharing food and drinks, kids will love the big lawn space for chasey and kick-to-kick. ON THE TR AIL There’s a tasty selection of Bellarine Taste Trail champions close to Ocean Grove too, the nearest is Oakdene. The cellar door is in an inverted house, the café is set in a forest of birch trees and the restaurant is perfect for special occasions, even if the special occasion is simply being on holiday. In the industrial part of Ocean Grove you will find a pleasant surprise, Ocean Grove’s very own brewery – BrewiColo. If the brewers background (Fijian) is anything to go by, this is a rather relaxing place to have yourself a Pale Ale.

There is nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away - SARAH KAY
Nestled between the mouth of the Barwon River and the roaring surf of 13th Beach, Barwon Heads is in a gorgeous position. Families love paddling in the shallows of the gentle river beach after a solid session at the playground right alongside. Serious surfers spend time at nearby 13th Beach where the waves pound in from Bass Strait.

Barwon Heads is ideal for golfers too, with three of the top 30 public access courses in Australia woven into the dunes just outside town: Barwon Heads Golf Club and the two at 13th Beach Golf Links.
Nearer the water, At the Heads is a stunning place to eat and drink and, depending on the tide, you could be out over the water.
Sporty types might like to experience these parts as local Cadel Evans hosts Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race each January. The professionals, both men and women, are competing in a UCI world tour event, but weekend warriors can don the lycra for the People’s Ride.
UP IN THE CLOUDS The Barwon Heads Airport is the starting point for all manner of sky-high adventure: scenic flight and aerobatic adventures with Adventure Flight Co. and Great Ocean Air and skydiving with epic views of the coast with Skydive Australia.
