2019 GSSC Annual Conference

P R O G R A M MARGARITAVILLE BEACH HOTEL Pensacola, FL | April 9-10, 2019

Welcome to Pensacola and the Margaritaville Beach Hotel for the GSSC 2019 Spring Conference. I am excited to have the opportunity to spend the next two days with you and discuss the topic of Employee Engagement. The most critical element to a successful business is the people that work for us and their commitment to the work that they perform. The higher the engagement of your workforce, the greater the opportunity for success. Our two days will start with a tour of Florida’s State SkillsUSA contest, where we will see talent being developed to enter our industry. From there we will have presentations and sessions discussing engagement, effective engagement strategy, and more. My goal is that you find this conference beneficial; from the material presented, to the discussion with exhibitors and the contacts that are made. A special thank you to our Sponsors for helping make this event possible. Thank you as well for attending; your participation and input is what makes this conference valuable.

12:30-1:30 PM Opening Keynote: What’s the Big Deal

About Employee Engagement What you need to know and why it matters! Employee Engagement is a hot topic these days. It is listed as one of three top priorities by CEO’s within the United Stated, but only less than a quarter of them know what to do about it. Having high employee engagement translates into better productivity, less absenteeism, more customer loyalty, greater retention, higher profits, fewer safety accidents and higher quality and much more. It is a way to distinguish a brand from the competition as well and improve customer facing experiences. Learn what Employee engagement means, the consequences and benefits for manufacturing companies and what steps you can take to improve employee engagement in your companies today. Presenter: Allan Steinmetz, CEO | Founder Inward Consulting

1:45-2:45 PM Onboarding

Most people confuse onboarding with orientation wherein lies the problem. In this session we will look at what the difference is and how you can create an onboarding program to engage your employees, reduce turnover and integrate them into your company’s culture.

3:15-4:00 PM Reverse Mentoring: An Engagement Tool With the newer generations soon to be making up the majority of the workplace, it is more important now than ever to navigate ways to engage them. Not only does your company need to recruit, and retain them, they also need to be able to keep them engaged. This session turns traditional mentoring on its head and outlines ways to use it as an engagement tool.

Presenter: Sherry Joubert, Project Manager, Ingalls Shipbuilding

4:00-4:30 PM Industry News and Opportunities: Recruiting Resources for Future Shipbuilders

Dr. Kit will provide an overview of how his website (drkit.org) may be used to engage students in shipbuilding-related content. These resources will help to increase student awareness to careers in the field and assist with recruitment. Presenter: Dr. Kit Nast, Psychology Instructor, Bishop State Community College

4:30-5:00 PM Industry News and Opportunities: BYF: Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Works!

Learn how you can be a part of a one-year project to develop a national career awareness, image enhancement, and recruitment platform for the shipbuilding and repair industry to address critical workforce challenges while building the next generation of craft professionals. When it comes to communicating with Generations outside of or own, whether in work, the community or at home we all have moments that are challenging, and sometimes even lead to conflict. We may all be speaking English, however it doesn’t always seem that way! Join me as I share what shapes each generations unique characteristics and how we can work through some of the common “sticking points” we encounter when communicating with generations outside our own.
