Houston Agricultural Show 2014

Taking place on Saturday 7th June this year, Houston Show was definitely a ‘show to two halves’ with very heavy rain making the afternoon somewhat damp! Luckily most of the livestock judging was complete prior to the down pour and many of the local people who attended the show had already managed to enjoy a great day out. Even those who braved the afternoon had a great time and the light horse competition continued unhampered. The livestock section of the show was well attended and the high quality cattle and sheep made the competition good. Major winners in the Dairy Section were D & P Carruth of High Auchensale, Kilbarchan and T Stewart of Wellees, Houston. In the Beef Section, A J Wilson, Westcroft, Kilwinning; A Young, Towncroft, Houston and T Marsh, Lower Bardrain, Johnstone took the trophies with A J Wilson winning Best Animal in the Beef Section. In the sheep classes, the competition was split between three different sections and the major winners were R Close, Nethermill, Langbank; A Fletcher, Laigh Hatton, Bishopton and T & E Paterson, Auldlea, Beith, with R Close winning the Overall Champion prize. In the heavy horse section, the Best Clydesdale trophy was won by A Fletcher, Laigh Hatton and in the light horse sections, major prize winners were Katy Gillespie winning Best Pony and Supreme Horse Champion on Dragon Fire and Reba Laurie winning Best Horse on Gabby. The overall Best In Show was judged by show president, Adam McCartney, and was won by A J Wilson, Westcroft, Kilwinning and the trophy for most points in the livestock section was won by T Stewart, Wellees, Houston.

Houston’s Got Talent was a brilliant show, opened by local dance group The Galaxy Dancers and culminating in West Renfrewshire Young Farmer’s gunging some members of our committee. The competition was won by Sasha Kaloheris singing Matilda. The baking and craft marquee was full to the brim with beautiful handcrafts and delicious baking. The major prizewinners were Moira Dunlop winning most points in the Industrial Section with and most points in Handicrafts. The perpetual cup for most points in baking and provisions went to Christine Anderson, who was also runner up in the points section. The winners in the children’s sections were Leah Feely in the 9-12 years, Beth MacDonald in the 6-8 years and Sofie Enos in the under 5’s section. Abbey Nursery won the nursery section with a collage of an agricultural show. The Society would like to thank all our sponsors, advertisers, stall holders and everyone who attended the show for making 2014 such a good year.
