2021 Largs Viking Festival Returning for 2021! From 28th August to 5th September Started in 1980 this Annual Festival marks the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland battle between the Scots and Norse. The living history Viking compound gives the public a glimpse of what life would have been like in a 13th Century Viking Village. Find out about their way of life; learn about how they made their clothes, weapons, jewellery and food. The Festival will consist of a Scottish Market in the marquee, an outdoor market, a Viking compound (not a full village this year) and an air display by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the second weekend. Organiser, Alex Gallagher said, “It is really disappointing and frustrating that the Largs Viking Festival will be a restricted offering this year. But we are glad that we can put something, even limited, on for those who support us and for the benefit of local tourism and businesses. We are working on a digital festival. This will not take the place of a “real” physical festival but we hope it can offer at least a flavour of the festival to our supporters live and on the web. “We know that there are many people across Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world who love to visit our Festival. We thank them all and we promise that, after this pandemic has lifted, hopefully next year, we will stage the best and biggest Largs Viking Festival it is possible to stage. So enjoy this year and keep looking forward to 2022. Full details will be available nearer the date, but for more information please visit https://largsvikingfestival.org/

ward 1 - inverclyde Cllr David Wilson There have been operational changes at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. There will remain an overarching authority with representatives from Inverclyde and Renfrewshire Councils. The day to day running will be the responsibility of each Council in their geographical area. Inverclyde will manage Lunderston Bay and Cornalees, Renfrewshire, Castle Semple and the Muirshiel Centre. I really welcome this move and already we are seeing increased funding at both Inverclyde sites. We had three separate attempts at nesting by Ospreys and by the time this circulates three youngsters will have fledged and be on their journey to Africa. Hopefully next year we may have a camera observing a nest. Balrossie continues to be a concern. We cannot demolish as it is a listed building but the condition is now so bad that it is a health and safety problem. I have asked officers to reassess the whole situation. The Institute development continues to be incomplete. There is a Bank now holding the security over the premises but I consider the monies being asked are unrealistic. Once an approved application commences building there is in law no time limit to completion. Needs to change. Many complaints about speeding and the condition of the village pavements. A 20mph limit is a priority for me and I have asked if town centre improvement grants can be used for the upgrading of pavements. Those in Port Glasgow have been completed and it does make a big difference. I have been assisting village voluntary organisations with the annual grants paperwork. These voluntary groups are the life blood of the village and must be supported. Birkmyre mini/midi rugby has 165 boys and girls who are members, all coached by volunteers. The total fund is £370k. Recent heavy rain has seen damage to roads, West Glen and Gillburn. The latter should be helped by the Glenmosston Flood Protection Scheme. Thanks are due to the cooperation of house owners on the hill. Youth organisations are starting to meet again after the lockdown. As Patron it was great to see the Port Glasgow Balaclava detachment of the Army Cadets back in harness. The great thing about the Cadets is that in uniform there is no distinction in background etc. We are fortunate to have the Lord Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy as President of the Army Cadet Force in the West. Been asked often about the Bonfire and Fireworks this year. Folks seem to feel that after the past 18 months we need some good fun. My surgery is Saturday 28th August at the Cargill 10am - 11am.
