Charles de Boinville, who lived in Kilmacolm, was the Greenock Cricket Club wicket-keeper in the 1950’s, and I bowled to him. He was Regional Director for Scotland for BOCM, based in Greenock, which was the Animal feeds division of Unilever. He left Kilmacolm in 1960 to be Vice-Chairman of the animal feeds group in London and subsequently became Chairman. He then became a member of the M.C.C. de Boinville is certainly not the most common of surnames and I have never seen it used until the beginning of this year. I have a passing interest in Horse Racing and suddenly noticed a jockey by that name listed as winning a National Hunt race, but did not pay too much attention until it appeared twice in quick succession. Thereafter, my curiosity was aroused and I browsed and got a quick reply from Brough Scott, and quickly thereafter an email from the jockey’s father Simon de Boinville, who was born in Kilmacolm and a son of Charles. It can be a very small world! I have gathered information already, but would also be pleased to hear any other stories about the de Boinville family and especially from anyone who remembers where they lived in Kilmacolm. Please contact T.R. Irvine [tri.akabigron@yahoo.co.uk]
