por Edna Ladeira Volvido quase um ano após o lançamento da nossa querida O2 Sul, trazemos novidades aos leitores que nos acompanham. O sucesso da revista – que é também uma ferramenta de trabalho para a Hall Versátil – é notável. São muitos os que não imaginavam que outros concelhos do distrito de Setúbal, que não a sua capital, gerassem tanta e tão interessante vida. Decidimos, por isso, começar um novo capítulo, no qual dedicamos cada nova edição a uma cidade da Margem Sul. Seguimos a mesma linha editorial do projecto, mas agora mais desenvolvida sobre cada concelho e informação mais diversificada em grande parte das rubricas. Bem-vindo(a), portanto, a um Barreiro promissor. Esqueça a memória quase exclusiva de uma cidade industrial que se transformou em dormitório. Este é um concelho com um potencial gigantesco, que tem permanecido discreto, mas cujo plano municipal promete surpreender muitos. O betão é uma ínfima parte de um universo inspirador: 16 quilómetros de orla ribeirinha, inúmeros espaços verdes para palmilhar, uma identidade associativa que se expressa sem medos – e que se distingue – na cultura e no desporto. Acredite: quanto mais explorar, com mais vontade ficará de criar sinergias com este território de gente inclusiva e jovens disruptivos. Venha fazer parte da mudança.

Assim de repente pode ser que não se lembre, mas Rodrigo Leão é um dos músicos e compositores portugueses mais talentosos de todos os tempos. Em plena celebração de 25 anos de carreira, começou o seu trabalho nas míticas bandas Madredeus e Sétima Legião, onde fez um notável trabalho que continuou na sua carreira a solo. Hoje, o seu nome é colocado ao lado de compositores influentes como Ryuichi Sakamoto ou Ludovico Einaudi e é responsável pelas bandas-sonoras de O Mordomo, de Lee Daniels, ou A Gaiola Dourada, de Ruben Alves. No Barreiro, esgotou uma sala de espectáculos.

Reabilitação urbana também é sinal de modernidade Há duas formas de olhar para o recuo na construção habitacional: como uma fraqueza, se a respectiva localização não tiver casas valorizadas – modernas, sustentáveis e de luxo – e, portanto, não estiver à altura das exigências das novas famílias; ou como uma oportunidade, se pensarmos no fenómeno de reabilitação urbana como uma ocasião para reutilizar casas com boas estruturas, nas quais podemos dar um toque da nossa personalidade, a um preço bem mais em conta. Memória e Futuro, pela mesma Identidade A memória dos finais dos anos 90 não me engana. Tempos felizes, cerne da minha adolescência, na qual tive a regalia de privar com as gentes do Barreiro. Vinda de um lugar com menos destreza intelectual, rapidamente me adaptei à dinâmica da cidade. Por um lado, pela generosidade inclusiva dos novos amigos; por outro, porque a criatividade e o espírito disruptivo alimentava a minha veia de uma justa liberdade, apaixonada por cultura. Não sentíamos falta da capital, a não ser para trabalhar ou ir para a faculdade. A cidade movia-se ao ritmo e com os estímulos certos. Éramos conhecidos pela paisagem industrial, é certo, na altura* sobejamente desvalorizada, mas quem vivia o Barreiro não subjugava a sua identidade. Mesmo os que chegavam de longe, como António Câmara, fundador da YDreams e Prémio Pessoa em 2006. Veio pela primeira vez, em 1972, para ver Earnest Killum, jogador do mítico Barreirense, com currículo nos Los Angeles Lakers. A experiência foi tão boa, que o seu filho passou a fazer parte do melhor clube de basquetebol da altura*. Era uma das modalidades que fazia parte da nossa identidade, mas assim faziam a música, o teatro, o cinema ou qualquer forma de arte que servisse de inspiração, expressão e experimentação. Uma herança em grande parte deixada pelo antigo regime, altura em que a música estava ligada ao movimento associativo e cantores reprimidos actuavam em colectividades. Um privilégio para a época. Voltando aos anos da minha adolescência, já as influências eram outras e vivíamos com paixão o grunge, o techno e o house. A oferta era suficiente para não cansar: o Contraluz, do qual tenho particular saudade, Pial, Chapelaria, Cineclube ou Os Franceses – lugares onde se lia, debatia e criava. No circuito nocturno, o Largo dos Penicheiros não era grande o suficiente para tanta vida, que se dividia depois pelo Be Jazz, da Escola de Jazz do Barreiro, Alburrica, Portão, Vinícola, Carvoaria ou DNA, consoante preferências de música e ambiente. A qualidade da programação e a atmosfera da cidade convidavam curiosos, até da capital. A procura de novas vivências levou-me daqui, mas a bolha imobiliária que sufoca

Lisboa e a constituição de uma nova família trouxeramme de volta. Regressei pouco entusiasta, consequência dos anos desinteressantes que por aqui se viveram. A O2 Sul foi a motivação para voltar a conhecer. Descobri que o património industrial está mais valorizado e há empresas e artistas interessados em transformá-lo em lugar de arte e cultura, experimental ou não (os U2 foram filmados aqui, em 2004); o bairro operário da CUF ganhou residências artísticas, graças à PADA; e a Casa da Cultura foi revitalizada. Que ainda existem associações como a OUT.RA, que 16 anos depois continua a fazer do OUT.FEST um festival de sucesso, destacando o Barreiro no circuito da produção e divulgação de música alternativa; que a Sara, do Pial, faz agora parte da Cooperativa Mula, o lugar onde melhor recordei o espírito de inclusão e partilha que vivi no Barreiro; que, 10 anos depois, a zona Polis, à beira-rio, vai ser terminada e vou passear ainda mais com a minha filha; que o AMAC voltou à programação de qualidade, inclusivamente para os mais pequenos; que o ArteViva continua a funcionar e há oﬁcinas valiosas para os mais novos, no teatro, na biblioteca ou na Conde de Ferreira, um lugar de potencial gigante, em desenvolvimento por uma equipa dedicada; que a arte urbana nos distingue e traz artistas que nos abraçam, como o Bordalo II; que o Parque da Cidade continua maravilhoso e voltou a ter mais vida, graças à nova cafetaria; que a organização da primeira edição do Jazz no Parque não poderia ter sido melhor; que vamos ter direito a um cheque-cultura, que não a torna gratuita, mas a estimula; que alemães interessados na nossa identidade apanham o barco para este lado; que há planos e gente – da autarquia e não só – com vontade de continuar a servir os barreirenses de cultura, desporto, educação, lazer e tecnologia. Faznos falta algum investimento. De dinheiro, e de tempo que muitos cidadãos locais não despendem, mas acreditamos que também isso está prestes a mudar. Adiante: escolha o calçado mais confortável e venha palmilhar connosco. O Barreiro tem um novo caminho para percorrer.

Entrevista a Frederico Rosa

Presidente da Câmara Municipal do Barreiro PROJECTOS PARA O BARREIRO, NOS PRÓXIMOS TRÊS ANOS? Vivemos uma altura de transformação crucial na cidade e queremos que os novos projectos funcionem de uma forma concertada, para que o Barreiro comece novamente a receber pessoas, seja para residir ou visitar o município. Apostamos em eixos que nos parecem fundamentais. Na mobilidade, graças ao maior investimento da autarquia, haverá uma renovação da frota de autocarros dos Transportes Colectivos do Barreiro, que irão passar de 39 para 60 autocarros novos e movidos a gás. Este é um projecto estrutural, não só para ajudar na mobilidade diária dos milhares de residentes, mas também para alargar a oferta às pessoas novas que chegam à cidade, nomeadamente de Lisboa. Depois, queremos que as pessoas deixem de ver a cidade como um dormitório e que tenham vontade de aproveitá-la, depois do trabalho ou ao fim-de-semana. Por isso, o rejuvenescimento da cultura é outra das nossas grandes apostas: recuperámos a gestão da Casa da Cultura, uma grande sala de espectáculos com 900 lugares sentados; iremos construir uma arena multiusos, perto do mural do Vhils; tornámos o Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita cada vez mais activo e com cartazes apelativos; e, este ano, tivémos a primeira edição do Jazz no Parque, ao longo de três dias e com concertos completamente gratuitos. Por outro lado, estamos a investir muito na qualidade de vida ao ar livre: a zona Polis vai ser terminada, ao fim de 10 anos; e já temos projectos em fase de início de obra para reabilitar os 16 quilómetros de frente-rio. O desporto é outro dos nossos chapéus, seja ao ar livre, com a disponibilização de workout stations ou com a construção de pavilhões. Vamos também apostar na oferta hoteleira, para que as pessoas possam visitar e permanecer, de forma que conheçam a área metropolitana de Lisboa de uma perspectiva menos catalogada e com uma identidade muito própria, como é a do Barreiro. O CHEQUE-CULTURA IRÁ ESTIMULAR A CULTURA DE QUE FORMA? O Barreiro tem uma oferta cultural de grande qualidade, mas muito pouco conhecida, ou frequentada quase sempre pelo mesmo público. O cheque-cultura disponibilizará um plafond anual de 20€, a partir dos 12 anos, para descontar gradualmente em espectáculos, já a partir do último trimestre do ano, esperamos nós. Para além de ser mais uma ferramenta de comunicação, o cheque-cultura irá estimular o

consumo de cultura por parte de novos públicos, que normalmente não assistem a estes espectáculos. Acreditamos que, com esta dinâmica, as pessoas também saiam mais à rua e experimentem as coisas à sua volta, como cafés, restaurantes ou bares, contribuindo para a economia local. Todos ganham. E O INVESTIMENTO TURÍSTICO? Estamos a trabalhar para colocar à venda 11 dos 21 hectares da Quinta Braancamp, um terreno com uma vista fantástica para Lisboa e o Tejo. Esse terreno será vendido de acordo com algumas condições que salvaguardem os interesses dos Barreirenses, nomeadamente poderem usufruir dos espaços verdes e de lazer. A ideia é construir um hotel e reabilitar toda a frente-rio, dotando o espaço de zonas verdes que possam, efectivamente, ganhar vida. Em paralelo, iremos disponibilizar o terminal da antiga estação de comboios, para investimento em restauração e lazer. O antigo dormitório da CP irá ser transformado em alojamento local, por exemplo, e há já empresários com várias ofertas. Esta área é estratégica do ponto de vista turístico, porque é a grande porta de entrada para o Barreiro e Lisboa, simultaneamente. Ou seja, em 20 minutos, as pessoas estão na Baixa lisboeta, mas podem optar por ficar na nossa cidade, que tem muito para explorar e com muito mais tranquilidade do que a capital. E acreditamos que os turistas irão ficar deliciados com a nova aposta gastronómica: a criação de um prato concelhio! PODEMOS PERDER A NOSSA TRANQUILIDADE? Para vivermos o progresso, e para que as pessoas voltem a dar vida à cidade, obviamente vamos ter de sair da nossa zona de conforto: vamos ver mais pessoas nas ruas, nos transportes, nos restaurantes. Mas, sem isso, não há comércio que se aguente e é óbvio que as pessoas se queixam disso. Hoje em dia, saímos à rua à noite e não vemos ninguém. Nós não queremos isso. Se perdermos alguma tranquilidade, é sinal que a cidade está viva e a mexer-se. É claro que queremos preparar a cidade para o menor ruído possível e é por isso que estamos a trabalhar em infra-estruturas, como é o caso do aumento exponencial dos autocarros. Criar novos ponto de interesse, para que as pessoas se distribuam melhor e alimentem o comércio local. Não queremos o Barreiro como uma aldeia, mas sim como uma cidade vibrante - mas ordenada -, capaz de responder à vida que está prestes a receber.

E NO PLANO DA EDUCAÇÃO? Estamos a trabalhar no maior combate de sempre ao insucesso escolar. O nosso investimento é de 750 000€, nos próximos três anos. Neste momento, já oferecemos os manuais escolares a todas as turmas do 1.º ciclo. O investimento nas obras das escolas – das infra-estruturas básicas – é essencial, mas a nossa preocupação ultrapassa essa questão. Preocupamo-nos com a pedagogia. Estamos a renovar as bibliotecas escolares com 100€ por ano para comprar novos livros, algo que não era feito há muitos anos. Estamos a criar uma rede de bibliotecas escolares, para que as escolas possam comunicar entre si e trocar livros. Queremos que os alunos ponham a mão na massa, que experimentem. Robótica, programação. Que não o façam, exclusivamente, através de teoria. Distribuímos tablets, kits de ciência. Há um interesse muito grande da autarquia na aprendizagem dos alunos e na capacitação dos professores. QUAL O PAPEL DA AUTARQUIA NA CRIAÇÃO DE EMPREGO NA CIDADE? O nosso papel é atrair investimento. Onde se localizam as empresas? Onde houver capital humano, custos de contexto mais baixos e onde possam equilibrar a vida profissional com a vida familiar. Nós temos de colocar o Barreiro na shortlist de destinos a escolher. E, se assim for, também atraímos investimento que, consequentemente, gera emprego local. Pode ser uma farmacêutica, um hotel, um ginásio ou um terminal de contentores. Somos muito proactivos e temos uma diplomacia económica forte. Vamos à procura de investimento. E PARA MICROEMPRESAS? Normalmente, o que acontece quando alguém quer abrir um negócio é não ter dinheiro para suportar os custos da sua ideia. É para dar resposta a esta necessidade, que vamos criar uma start-up com capacidade para 90 postos de trabalho, programas de aceleração para perceber a viabilidade da ideia e trabalhar a economia local que também suporte essa ideia.

informação sobre escolas de línguas no município, sugestões de locais de lazer e desporto. Onde podem pôr os filhos a jogar basquetebol? Onde podem ver um concerto? Onde podem comer bom peixe? Será um guia básico de sobrevivência (risos). NA ÁREA DA SUSTENTABILIDADE, O QUE ESTÁ PREVISTO? O nosso maior contributo vai ser na redução de emissões. Na área da mobilidade, vamos ter autocarros novos a gás; a nível interno da Câmara, estamos a abolir o papel, graças à informatização dos processos. Outra das nossas metas é reduzir a factura da água, nomeadamente através de obras na cidade para que os consumos dos espaços públicos sejam bastante mais reduzidos, como no Parque da Cidade, por exemplo. Teremos ainda 11 500 iluminárias em LED, que vão uniformizar a iluminação pública e reduzir exponencialmente os seus custos. PERGUNTA-CLICHÉ: PORQUÊ VIVER NO BARREIRO? Porque oferece qualidade de vida: temos a melhor rede de transportes do distrito. Temos uma oferta cultural de qualidade. O roteiro de arte urbana, dinamizado pela ADAO, por exemplo, distingue-se na Área Metropolitana de Lisboa. E vêm pessoas de outras cidades, para assistir aos nossos festivais de música. A nossa escola de jazz é sobejamente reconhecida. Temos 16 quilómetros de frente-rio, com praia incluída (e água saudável para tomar banho). E sempre tivemos sentimento de pertença e pessoas unidas por grandes afectos, que é preciso recuperar. E vamos recuperar. No final deste mandato, é certo que o Barreiro estará diferente para melhor.

QUAL O APOIO DADO A ESTRANGEIROS QUE QUEIRAM RESIDIR / INVESTIR NA CIDADE? O Barreiro começa já a receber alguns estrangeiros, consequência da bolha imobiliária da capital. O primeiro passo é criar equipas multidisciplinares dentro da Câmara que lhes possam dar resposta, para que eles não se percam na burocracia da administração pública, que retira imenso tempo. A informatização dentro da própria Câmara é algo invisível ao cidadão comum, mas que vai ajudar imenso neste processo. Os investidores, por exemplo, vão poder entregar projectos sem precisarem de deslocar-se à cidade. Para os estrangeiros que querem residir, queremos preparar um welcome kit, com uma série de facilitadores: vocabulário básico em português,

Mesmo quando se move por caminhos menos conhecidos, a cultura no Barreiro está sempre muito bem representada. Saiba onde (quase) tudo acontece. ADAO É sempre uma emoção quando a Associação de Desenvolvimento de Artes e Ofícios anuncia o próximo Open Day, que dá a conhecer os projectos que a associação alberga nas suas instalações (o antigo quartel de bombeiros disponibiliza várias salas para artistas residentes, em várias áreas). Actua como a maior promotora de arte da cidade no que diz respeito a arte urbana e artes plásticas, sendo a responsável por trazer alguns dos nomes portugueses mais reconhecidos da street art – como Bordalo II, Gonçalo Mar ou Odeith – para dar vida a fachadas da cidade. O espírito criativo estende-se a outras áreas, como a música, que a associação promove através de concertos no seu café; ou literatura, com apresentação de livros (quem não viu o Kalaf, ficou a perder). COOPERATIVA MULA No quadro de ardósia que expõe o menu, o texto termina assim: «... e há muito amor»! Nesta casa humilde, entregue a uma equipa gentil e inclusiva, sentimo-nos em casa à primeira visita. Espírito de grupo não falta – ao estilo barreirense –, mas que não se pense que é um regabofe. Porque há amor no que se faz, mas também exigência, as iniciativas cativam pela qualidade: a programação frequente inclui sessão de cinema (às vezes, com presença de realizadores ou argumentistas) precedida de um jantar composto, por 5€. Já na Pizza Domingueira, que acontece de 15 em 15 dias, ao som de um DJ convidado, faz-se a «melhor pizza do mundo», cozinhada num forno tradicional. Também recebem apresentações de livros ou workshops, mas seja em que forma de arte, o objectivo da «Mula» é promover uma filosofia anti-capitalista, sustentável e, sobretudo, de cooperação. A forte ligação ao associativismo transformou o Barreiro numa cidade reconhecida no universo desportivo em Portugal, formando atletas de renome em várias modalidades, desde tenra idade. BASQUETEBOL É, talvez, a modalidade pela qual o Barreiro é mais (re)conhecido, com uma história de triunfos e formação de atletas como Miguel Queiroz, José Silva ou Stefan Djukic, formados por um dos clubes mais carismáticos da cidade: o FC Barreirense. NINGUÉM DIRIA, MAS NÓS TEMOS CÁ DISTO! Surf Urbano Diz Garret McNamara, o surfista veterano que apanhou a maior onda da Nazaré, de 30 metros, que a onda do Barreiro, apesar de pequena, é muito longa, sendo este um dos maiores trunfos destas águas (é capaz de rolar ao longo de 150 metros). As ondas geradas pela passagem dos barcos que fazem a travessia do rio Tejo (Barreiro-Lisboa) já foram cenário da segunda temporada da série Weird Waves, disponível no YouTube.

JUDO Recomendado pela UNESCO para crianças e jovens até aos 15 anos, o Judo faz parte da tradição barreirense desde 1963, formando várias gerações de judocas. Especializado em carnes maturadas, combina, no mesmo espaço charmoso, o restaurante e um talho-charcutaria, de onde poderá levar os seus favoritos para casa e reeditar a experiência. Na carta sobressaem a picanha, maminha Black Angus ou wagyu (australiano), bem como as especialidades, das quais destacamos o bife do cortador, médio ou médio-mal, uma obra-prima de qualidade e técnica. Aos domingos, desforre-se: é servida uma selecção de maminha à discrição. Há outros argumentos que acrescentam valor à carta: a salada e a batata-doce frita caseira, acompanhamentos dos quais ficámos fãs, e a lista de vinhos de grande qualidade. VITORIANA’S SPOT | Rendemo-nos ao revivalismo Num registo mais retro, o Vitoriana’s Spot cativa-nos do princípio ao fim. Pela decoração, viajamos no tempo: flyers de épicos do cinema e da música, discos de vinil que servem como base de pratos ou até os figurinos da simpática anfitriã (responsável pelos modelitos originais que estão à venda, na entrada). A playlist inclui hits a partir dos anos 80, sobretudo, e a comida assenta numa base saudável, saborosa e a um preço justo: saladas generosas e criativas, opções vegetarianas que convencem os mais cépticos e pratos do dia, que sejam de carne ou peixe, em nada se assemelham às tascas mais comuns. NATUREZA A PERDER DE VISTA Imagine 14 hectares de um espaço verde vivo e frondoso, muito bem cuidado, com centenas de árvores enormes – que criam muitas sombras – e zonas relvadas generosas, onde é possível estender a toalha e fazer um piquenique com os amigos, ou as clássicas juras de amor, que nunca passam de moda. A mancha verde do Parque da Cidade é verdadeiramente inspiradora, convidando a largas horas de passeio, descanso ou evasão, em companhia ou sozinho. O maior pulmão do concelho tem 380 hectares de mata, com pinheiros-bravos, sobreiros, carvalhos, murtas e até medronheiros; e onde coabitam o coelho-bravo, a raposa, a águia-de-asa-redonda e um ou outro javali. É possível fazer actividade física controlada numa extensão de 3 quilómetros e 17 estações com dicas e equipamento de exercícios; ou reservar um dia de fim-de-semana para se juntar com a família e fazer um piquenique na muito bem conservada zona de merendas, onde os miúdos e os patudos podem brincar. Mas não é só! Aqui também se estimula o respeito e conhecimento da natureza, graças às iniciativas do Centro de Educação Ambiental, através das quais pode observar aves e insectos, colher cogumelos ou ajudar no controle da invasão de espécies nocivas para o nosso habitat. Se é adepto(a) de meditação, cozinha vegetariana e palestras, fique a saber que a Associação Amigos da Mata da Machada dinamiza o projecto Natural Mente, que organiza actividades esporádicas. Este é, talvez, o spot mais propício à contemplação e, quanto a nós, um dos lugares mais bonitos da cidade para passear. Inicie o percurso no passadiço do Moinho Pequeno, na Rua Miguel Pais, e dê a volta pela magnífica baía, onde pode contemplar barcos de pescadores atracados e descobrir os moinhos de vento e de maré da praia fluvial de Alburrica, harmoniosamente enquadrados na natureza. Pelo caminho, irá encontrar vestígios arqueológicos e algumas workout stations, onde pode optar por fazer exercício. Do lado norte tem também um bar de apoio, onde pode comprar um geladinho — o Bar do Bento.

Situado na zona histórica da cidade, o jardim da Avenida da Praia teria muitas histórias para contar, se falasse. Na muralha que o acompanha — nos quase 2 quilómetros de passeio, com uma das melhores vistas da Margem Sul para Lisboa —, habituámonos a ver pescadores no seu exercício de paciência, namorados que aproveitam o romance do crepúsculo ou grupos de amigos que põem a conversa em dia ou tiram fotografias com a capital como cenário. É surpreendentemente diversificada a oferta deste jardim: academia de xadrez, café/bar Camarro Lounge, restaurante de peixe A Casa do Hugo, parque infantil, piscina municipal, zona de merendas, rampa de skate (da Gasoline), workout stations, e um novo campo multidesportos, adequado para jogar basquetebol, futsal, padel, badminton, voleibol, jogo do mata, andebol, miniténis, fute-ténis, hóquei em campo, floorball e desporto adaptado. Ser dona de uma cadela que é mais diva do que a Mariah Carey tem as suas peripécias. Sim, envolve muita ternura, mas também requer muitos cuidados. Animem-se: há uma variedade de serviços no Barreiro que permitem tratar e dar um miminho extra ao vosso animal! CUIDADOS IMPRESCINDÍVEIS Quantas vezes não temos de fazer umas quantas promessas até encontrar o veterinário ideal? Às vezes, até descobrimos um bom profissional, mas depois percebemos que tem horário das nove às cinco, sem serviço de urgências. Caso o nosso cão coma veneno de ratos às três da manhã (às vezes o nível de fofura não corresponde ao Q.I.), esperamos até ao dia seguinte? Não vai dar! Por isso, vos digo: não há nada como as clínicas abertas 24h, a minha ansiedade agradece. Além disso, fico muito mais descansada em saber que a oferta de serviços é vasta e que posso tratar dos olhos, do coração ou até da pele da Tsuki, na mesma clinica. SERVIÇO AO DOMICÍLIO Nada melhor do que ter alguém que venha cá a casa dar uma vacina à Tsuki, com a mesma facilidade com que peço uma pizza. Para ser perfeito, só se o veterinário trouxesse uma margarita de oferta (#ficaadica). Agora a sério: quão fixe é podermos usufruir destes serviços, no conforto do nosso sofá? Quem trabalha em casa percebe do que falo. E quem tem séries em atraso na Netflix, também. Não me julguem, vocês também têm dias em que não saíam de casa nem que vos pagassem, que eu sei. PET SITTING | PET WALKING Ainda que não pareça, uma pessoa tem vida própria e nem tudo se resume à Tsuki. Quando precisamos de uma escapadinha a dois, sabe bem ter alguém que vá lá a casa dar-lhe comida e fazer-lhe companhia. Se a levarem a passear, melhor ainda. Como sabem, diva que é diva está sempre em dieta e gastar umas calorias extra é sempre bom. A melhor parte é eu saber que ela não está sozinha e está a ser bem tratada. A pior é poder gostar tanto da companhia, que eu deixe de ser a preferida! (#omedoéreal)

SPA E ESTÉTICA Ora, este serviço teria de ser o preferido da minha diva canina. Ela nasceu para ser mimada e aquele pêlo brilhante não se trata sozinho! Há regras cá em casa e uma delas é não ter unhas maiores do que a Rihanna. Por outro lado, a parte da escovagem é mesmo o seu momento mais relaxante: já adormeceu e tudo! Só faltavam os pepinos nos olhos, mas o mais provável era ela comê-los, por isso não vamos complicar! CÃOMINHADAS Numa caminhada que fizemos, pelos direitos das mulheres (como influencer canina que é, tem de se envolver em causas sociais), tornei-me numa expert, por isso, atentem: levem convosco um clássico que nunca sai de moda: água! Diz-se que não é fixe ter o bicho desidratado, e eu concordo. Outra tendência para a vida inteira: civismo! Por isso, já sabem: preparem os saquinhos para o poop. Assim como os brilhantes são os melhores amigos da mulher, as coleiras e trelas são os melhores amigos das cãominhadas. Já se o vosso cão morde, o açaime é mesmo um must have a considerar. E, por último, não se esqueçam: ter as vacinas em dia é uma boa forma de não começar o Walking Dead, versão canina. Divirtam-se!

Owning a female dog who is more of a diva than Mariah Carey has its adventures. Yes, it involves a lot of tenderness, but it also requires a lot of care. Cheer up: there is a variety of services in Barreiro that tend to and pamper your pet! INDISPENSABLE CARE How many times did we have to make a few vows before we find the ideal vet? Sometimes, we actually find good professionals, but then we realize that they work nine to five, without an emergency service. If our dog eats rat poison at 3am (sometimes the cuteness and IQ levels do not match), we wait till next day? It won’t do! Believe me: there is nothing like a clinic open 24 hours a day, my anxiety appreciates it! Besides, I feel reassured to know that the service offer is broad and that I can treat Tsuki’s eyes, heart or even skin at the same clinic. HOME SERVICE There is nothing better than having someone coming home to vaccinate Tsuki as easily as ordering pizza. To be perfect, the vet should bring you a margarita as well (#freetip). Seriously: how cool is it to benefit from these services in the comfort of our sofa? Those who work from home know what I mean. And those who are lagging behind in Netflix series as well. Don’t judge, I know that you also have those days when you wouldn’t leave home, not even if someone paid you to.

SPA AND BEAUTY This had to be my diva’s favourite service. She was born to be spoiled and that shiny fur doesn’t take care of itself! We have rules in place at home and one of them is not having longer fingernails than Rihanna! On the other hand, brushing is her most relaxing moment, she even fell asleep once! The only thing missing was the cucumber on her eyes, but she would probably eat it so let’s keep it simple! DOGWALKS After marching for women’s rights (as a dog influencer, she has to get involved in social causes), I became an expert, so pay attention: bring with you a classic that never goes out of fashion: water! Word has it that it is not cool to keep your animal dehydrated and I totally agree. Another trend for life: civility! You know what that means, get those poop bags ready. Just like diamonds are a girl’s best friend, collars and leashes are a dogwalk’s best friend. If your dog bites, then the muzzle is a must to consider. Last but not least don’t forget: having the vaccines up to date is a good way to prevent a dog version of The Walking Dead.

The biggest lung of the region has 380 hectares of forest, with cluster pines, oaks and cork oaks, myrtles and even strawberry trees; and where you can find wild rabbits, foxes, common buzzards and a few wild boars. You can exercise along a 3-kilometre path and 17 checkpoints, with workout tips and stations; or book a day of the weekend to get the family together and have lunch in the well-kept picnic areas, where kids and pets can play. But there’s more! In here, the respect for and knowledge of nature are fostered, thanks to the Environmental Education Centre initiatives, through which you can watch birds and insects, collect mushrooms or help with controlling invading species that harm our habitat. If you are a fan of meditation, vegetarian cuisine or talks, you should know that the Amigos da Mata da Machada association runs the Natural Mente project, which organises sporadic activities. Avenida da Praia Located in the city’s historical area, the Avenida da Praia gardens would tell many stories, if they could speak. In the wall that accompanies them - along the almost 2-kilometre promenade and with one of the best Lisbon views of the South Bay -, we got used to seeing fishermen exercising their patience, lovers enjoying the twilight or groups of friends catching up or taking pictures with the capital in the background. The offer of these gardens is surprisingly diversified: there is a chess academy, the Camarro Lounge café/bar, A Casa do Hugo fish restaurant, children’s playground, municipal swimming pool, picnic area, skateboard half pipe (run by Gasoline), workout stations and a new multisport field, which accommodates basketball, futsal, padel, badminton, volleyball, dodgeball, handball, mini-tennis, futnet, field hockey, floorball and adapted sports. For those who like running or just walking, there is a pedestrian circuit and a bicycle lane (with crossings!). Additionally, you can find several trash bins and even a recycling spot halfway through. A true relic!

Alburrica’s Fluvial Beach This is perhaps the most favourable spot for contemplation and, in our opinion, one of the prettiest walking places in the city: start the journey in the Moinho Pequeno pathway, on the Miguel Pais street, and go around the magnificent bay, where you can see anchored fishing boats and discover the Alburrica fluvial beach windmills and tide mills, seamlessly framed in the nature. On the way, you will find archaeological remains and some workout stations, where you can exercise. On the northern side, there’s a bar, where you can buy ice cream - Bar do Bento.

Besides the leafy green space, the park has a cultural and sports offer that provides good moments, either with family, friends or pets. In here, you breathe in style. NEVER ENDING NATURE Imagine 14 hectares of a leafy bright green space, well-kept, with hundreds of tall trees - providing great shade - and generous grass fields, where you can lie on a towel while you have a picnic with friends or make love promises, that never go out of style. The City Park green stain is truly inspiring, inviting to long hours of walking, rest or evasion, accompanied or alone. There is a playground and juvenile workout stations for the youngsters, as well as two ponds with ducks that draw the kids’ attention. It’s best to be prepared with water and food: the little ones will not want to leave soon. A VALUABLE AUDITORIUM Opened in November 2003, the Municipal Auditorium Augusto Cabrita is a multifunctional facility, whose modern concert hall hosts concerts, dancing, theatre, stand-up, cinema sessions and other performing arts, for all ages. Besides, it is usual to receive temporary exhibitions, always with the finest curatorship and in harmony with the existing inner space. Names such as Rodrigo Leão, Bruno Nogueira or Áurea have already performed here, selling out in a blink of an eye, due to such faithful culture fans as the Barreirenses. THE YUMMIEST COFFEE SHOP IN TOWN It is managed by a young team, but with a great vision. The inner space is very well decorated - industrialchic inspired - and the terrace is wonderful, with a view full of nature to the largest lake in the park. There is healthy food - wraps and salads that you cannot miss - and quality music, mostly Portuguese. Coffeetaria is a safe bet and another reason to linger in the park.

TASCA DA GALEGA | The classic corner About thirty years ago, when Manel da Galega gathered his friends at his tasca, on Christmas Eve, to drink ginjinha and see who would spit the cherry stone the farthest away, he started a tradition at Tasca da Galega, where now thousands convene in the Eve’s afternoon to complete the ritual. VITORIANA’S SPOT | We gave in to the city revivalism In more of a retro tone, the Vitoriana’s Spot captivates us from the beginning to the end. Through its decoration, we travel in time: epic movie and music flyers, vinyl records on the table or even the outfits of the kind owner (who is responsible for the unique clothes for sale, at the entrance). Urban surf Garret McNamara, the veteran surfer who caught the biggest wave in Nazaré, 30-metre tall, says that Barreiro’s wave, despite being small, is very long, making it one of the best assets of these waters (it can roll over 150 metres). The waves generated by the boats crossing the Tagus river (Barreiro-Lisbon) have already been featured on the second season of Weird Waves, available on YouTube.

Even when it follows lesser-known paths, culture is always well represented in Barreiro. Get to know where (almost) everything happens. ADAO It is always with great excitement that we receive the news of the next ADAO (Association for the Development of Art and Crafts) open day, where it showcases the projects running in the association facilities (the old fire station makes several rooms available to resident artists, in different areas). It acts as the largest urban and visual art promoter in the city and is responsible for bringing some of the most notorious Portuguese street artists - such as Bordalo II, Gonçalo Mar or Odeith - to enliven the city façades. Its creative spirit extends itself to other fields, such as music, that the association promotes through concerts in its café, or literature, with book presentations (those who missed Kalaf’s lost out). COOPERATIVA MULA In the blackboard where the menu is written, the text ends with “...and we have a lot of love”! In this humble house, run by a gentle and inclusive team, we feel at home since the first visit. There’s plenty of team spirit - Barreirense style -, but don’t think it is an all-out binge. There’s love in what they do, but also high standards, as their initiatives attract for their quality: the usual agenda includes cinema sessions (sometimes with the participation of the directors or screenwriters) preceded by a nice dinner for 5€. In the “Pizza Domingueira” (Sunday pizza), which happens every two weeks, with an invited DJ, the “best pizza in the world” is baked in a traditional oven. They also host book presentations and workshops but, despite the art form, Mula’s goal is to promote an anti-capitalist, sustainable and, above all, cooperation spirit.

The OUT.FEST (Barreiro’s Exploratory Music International Festival) is the city’s big thing and has attracted visitors, even from the capital. school. The investment in construction works in schools - at basic infrastructure level - is essential, but our concern goes beyond that matter. We are worried about pedagogy. We are renovating the school libraries with 100€ per year to buy new books, something that was not done for many years. We are creating a network of school libraries, so that they can communicate with each other and exchange books. We want students to get their hands dirty, to try new things. Robotics, programming. That they don’t do it exclusively in theory. We distributed tablets, science kits. There is a major interest of the municipality on student learning and teacher qualification. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE MUNICIPALITY IN CREATING EMPLOYMENT IN THE CITY? Our role is to attract investment. Where are companies located? Where they are near the human capital, where they have lower context costs and where they can balance the professional life with the family life. We have to place Barreiro in the preferred destination shortlist. If we manage to do that, we also attract investment, which in turn generates local employment. It can be a pharmaceutical plant, a hotel, a gym or a container terminal. We are very proactive and we have a strong economical diplomacy. We go and look for investment. AND FOR MICROENTERPRISES? Usually, what happens when someone wants to open a business is not having enough money to support the costs of his or her idea. In order to respond to this need, we will create a start-up with the capacity for 90 job positions, acceleration programmes to assess the viability of the idea and rework the local economy that also supports that idea.

suggestions of leisure and sports places. Where can their children play basketball? Where can they go to a concert? Where can they eat good fish? It will be a basic survival guide (laughs). REGARDING SUSTAINABILITY, WHAT IS FORESEEN? Our greatest contribution will be in emission reduction: in the mobility sector, we will have new gas-powered buses; within the city hall we are abolishing paper, thanks to the process computerisation. Another goal is to reduce the water bill, namely through works in the city to greatly decrease the consumption in public spaces, such as in the City Park, for instance. We will also have 11,500 LED lamps, which will standardise the public lighting and exponentially reduce its costs. CLICHÉ QUESTION: WHY LIVE IN BARREIRO? Because it offers quality of life: we have the best transportation network of the district. We have a quality cultural offer. The urban art itinerary, promoted by ADAO, for instance, excels within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. And we have people coming from other cities to attend our music festivals. Our jazz school is widely known. We have 16 kilometres of riverfront, with beach included (and healthy water to bathe in). Finally, we always had this sense of belonging and people bonded by great affections, which we need to recover. And we will recover. By the end of this mandate, for sure Barreiro will be different and better.

WHICH KIND OF SUPPORT IS GIVEN TO FOREIGNERS THAT WISH TO LIVE / INVEST IN THE CITY? Barreiro has already started to welcome some foreigners, in consequence of the Lisbon housing bubble. The first step is to create multidisciplinary teams within the city hall able to provide support, so that they don’t get lost in the public administration bureaucracy, which consumes a lot of time. The computerisation within the city hall is something invisible to the common citizen, but it will greatly help in this process. Investors, for instance, will be able to submit their projects without the need to travel to the city. For those who already live here, we want to prepare a welcome kit, with a bunch of facilitating tools: basic Portuguese vocabulary, information about language schools in the region,

PROJECTS FOR BARREIRO, OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS? We are at a time of crucial transformation in the city and we want the new projects to work in a concerted way, so that Barreiro starts again receiving people, either to live or to visit. We bet on areas that we believe are fundamental. In mobility, thanks to a higher investment from the municipality, the TCB fleet will be renewed, jumping from 39 to 60 new gas-powered buses. This is a structural project, not only to help in the daily mobility of its thousands of inhabitants, but also to broaden the offer to the new visitors arriving in Barreiro, namely from Lisbon. Additionally, we want people to stop looking at the city as a dormitory and start to enjoy it, after work or on weekends. For that reason, rejuvenating the cultural offer is one of our great bets: we regained the management of the House of Culture, a large concert hall with a seating capacity of 900 people; we will build a multipurpose arena, near the Vhils wall; we rendered the Municipal Auditorium Augusto Cabrita increasingly active and with an attractive offer; and, this year, we will have the first edition of Jazz in the Park, during three days and with completely free concerts. On a different approach, we are investing much in outdoor quality of life: the POLIS area will be concluded, after 10 years, and we have projects already starting to rehabilitate the 16 kilometres of riverfront. Sports is another hat of ours, either outdoors, by making new workout stations available, or indoors, by building new pavilions. We will also bet on the hotel offer, so people can visit and stay, thus getting to know the Lisbon Metropolitan Area from a less catalogued perspective and with an identity of its own, such as the one of Barreiro. THE CULTURE-CHEQUE WILL ALSO STIMULATE THE CULTURE. IN WHICH WAY? Barreiro has a high quality cultural offer, but little known or attended almost always by the same audience. The culture-cheque will have an yearly ceiling of 20€ to use gradually in events, for ages 12 and up, starting from the last quarter of this year, we hope. Besides being another communication tool, it will stimulate the consumption of culture by new audiences that usually do not attend this kind of shows.

WHAT ABOUT TOURISM INVESTMENT? We are preparing to sell 11 of the 21 hectares of Quinta do Braancamp, a piece of land with an amazing view over Lisbon and the Tagus river. It will be sold in accordance with some conditions that safeguard the best interest of the citizens, namely that they are able to make use of the green and leisure areas. The idea is to build a hotel and rehabilitate the entire riverfront, providing it with green areas than can in fact come alive. In parallel, we will make the old railway terminal available for restaurants and leisure. The old CP dormitory will be turned into local lodging, for instance, and several businessmen have already made their offers. This area is strategic from a tourism point of view, because it is the major gateway to Lisbon and Barreiro, simultaneously. I mean, in 20 minutes you can arrive at Lisbon downtown but opt to stay in our city, which has much more to explore and with much more peacefulness than the capital. And we believe that the tourists will be delighted with our next gastronomic bet: the creation of a municipal dish.

CAN WE LOSE OUR PEACE OF MIND? In order to live the progress, and have people bringing the city back to life, we will obviously have to leave our comfort zone: we will see more people on the streets, in public transport, in restaurants. However, without that, commerce will not hold and it is obvious that people complain about that. Nowadays, we go out at night and we see no one. We don’t want that. If we lose some peace of mind, it is a sign that the city is alive and stirring. Of course we want to prepare the city for the least noise possible and that’s why we are working on infrastructures, such as on the exponential growth of buses. Creating new points of interest, so that people distribute themselves better and feed the local commerce. We don’t want Barreiro as a village, but instead as a vibrant - though orderly - city, capable of responding to the life it is about to receive. AND WHAT ABOUT EDUCATION? We are working on the greatest fight against school failure. Our investment is of 750,000€ over the next three years. At the moment, we already provide free of charge the textbooks to all students in primary

Memory and Future, through thesame Identity The memory of the late 90s does not deceive me. Happy times, core of my teenage years, when I had the privilege of sharing with the people of Barreiro. Coming from a place of less intellectual skill, I rapidly adapted to the city dynamism. On the one hand, due to the inclusive generosity of the new friends; on the other, because the creativity and disruptive spirit fuelled my righteous freedom vein, in love with culture. We did not miss the capital, except to go to work or college. The city moved with the right pace and the right incentives. We were recognised by the industrial landscape, it is a fact, widely undervalued at the time, but those who lived Barreiro would not subdue its identity. Even those coming from afar, such as António Câmara, founder of YDreams and winner of the Pessoa prize in 2006. He came for the first time, in 1972, to see Earnest Killum, mythical player of Barreirense who played before in the Los Angeles Lakers. The experience was so good that his son started playing for the best basketball team at the time*. It was one of the sports that were part of our identity, but so did music, theatre, cinema or any other art form that could offer inspiration, expression or experimentation. A heritage mostly left by the old regime, when music was coupled with the associative movement and repressed artists played at local communities. A privilege at the time. Coming back to my teenage years, the influences had changed and we lived grunge, techno or house passionately. The offer was sufficient for not growing tired: Contraluz, which I particularly miss, Pial, Chapelaria, Cineclube or Os Franceses - places where one could read, debate and create. In the night circuit, the Penicheiros Square was not large enough for so much life, which then would split itself between Be Jazz, in Barreiro’s Jazz School, Alburrica, Portão, Vinícola, Carvoaria and DNA, according to the music and ambience tastes. The quality of the agenda and the city vibe attracted onlookers, even from the capital. The search for new experiences took me away from here, but the housing bubble suffocating Lisbon and the

establishment of a new family brought me back. I returned less than enthusiastic, consequence of the uninteresting years that took place here. O2 Sul was the motivation to get to know it again. I found out that the industrial heritage is more valued and that there are companies and artists interested in turning it into a place of culture and art, experimental or not (U2 were filmed here, in 2004); CUF’s worker’s quarter got artistic residences, thanks to PADA; and the House of Culture was revitalized; That associations such as OUT.RA still exist, which after 16 years still makes of OUT.FEST a successful festival, highlighting Barreiro in the alternative music production and promotion circuit; that Sara, from Pial, in now part of Cooperativa Mula, the place where I best recalled the inclusion and sharing spirit that I had experienced in Barreiro; that, 10 years later, the POLIS area, by the river, will be completed and I will stroll even more with my daughter; that AMAC is back with a quality agenda, inclusively for the younger ones; that ArteViva is still running and there are valuable workshops for children, at the theatre, in the library or at Conde de Ferreira, a place with a huge potential developed by a dedicated team; that street art diﬀerentiates us and brings in artists that embrace the city, such as Bordalo II; that the City Park is still wonderful and has a new life, thanks to the new coffee shop; that the Jazz in the Park organization could not have been better; that we will be eligible to have a culture-cheque, which does not make culture free, but fosters it; that Germans interested in our identity catch the ferry to this side of the river; that there are plans and people - not just from the municipality - willing to provide the Barreirenses with culture, sports, education, leisure and technology. We could use some investment. Of money and of time, which many local citizens do not spend, but we believe that even that is about to change. Anyway, pick your most comfortable shoes and tread with us. Barreiro has a new path ahead.

Urban rehabilitation: Signs of thetimes There are two ways of looking at the decline of the construction industry: as a weakness, if the city doesn’t have valued houses – modern, sustainable and luxurious – and, therefore, doesn’t respond to the demands of the new families; or as a strength, if we think of the urban renovation as an opportunity to reuse houses with a good structure, which we can tailor according to our own style, with a lower price. In the case of Barreiro, which doesn’t have new buildings since 2010, the successful approach has been house renovation. In this context, our real estate company – Hall Versátil – has done a remarkable job over the entire municipality: seven years after opening our first agency, we are responsible for trading hundreds of homes already renovated or to be restored, which proved to be excellent deals! You may not remember him at first sight, but Rodrigo Leão is one of the most talented Portuguese musicians and composers of all times. Now celebrating his 25-year-old career, he started composing for the mythical groups Madredeus and Sétima Legião, where we did a brilliant job, which endured in his solo career. Nowadays, his name is as important as those of influential musicians like Ryuichi Sakamoto or Ludovico Einaudi, and he is the brain behind The Butler (Lee Daniels) or A Gaiola Dourada (Ruben Alves) soundtracks. His concert in Barreiro was completely sold out.

AN ENTREPRENEURIAL EXAMPLE? Baía do Tejo, which has made an interesting job in the urban requalification and the cultural and museum heritage. Torre do Relógio1 and Museu Industrial, in the old Bairro Operário3, are worth a visit.

The success of this magazine – which is also a working tool for Hall Versátil – is remarkable. Many couldn’t imagine that other regions of the Setúbal district, apart from its capital, could generate so much life. Therefore, we decided to start a new chapter, in which we dedicate every new edition entirely to a single city of the South Bay. We follow the same editorial line, but with more details about each region and more diversified information in most sections. So, welcome to a promising Barreiro. Forget the memory – or the references – of an industrial city that turned into a dormitory. This is a municipality with a gigantic potential, which has remained discreet, but with a municipal plan that promises to astonish both locals and visitors. The concrete is a tiny part of an inspirational universe: 16 kilometres of riverside, multiple parks and gardens to walk in, a fearless associative life in culture and sports, with so much expression and distinction.
