Dear Friend, Here at GrowNYC we have one simple goal: to make our city more sustainable and livable. We are creating a New York City in which everyone can flourish by increasing access to fresh, healthy food; building and reviving open green spaces; reducing waste and expanding recycling; and educating New Yorkers in and out of the classroom. With your support and partnership, we are turning this vision into a reality. Thanks to you and our collective success, we have set our sights even higher, taking unprecedented action to disrupt the current inequalities in our food system. With the support of New York State and City, we have begun work in earnest on the New York State Regional Food Hub. Slated to open in 2020, this state-of-the-art food processing and distribution center will turn the regional food industry on its head, shifting from race-to-the-bottom business practices to a cooperative system collectively addressing food insecurity throughout New York City. As an engine for economic growth in the South Bronx, this project will create high quality jobs and a dedicated space for local food businesses, while bolstering a new, robust wholesale market for regional farmers. As GrowNYC nears its 50th anniversary in 2020, we reflect on the early days when we were throwing seed bombs in vacant lots to start gardens in forgotten spaces, hosting the first modern farmers markets to connect our urban dwellers with nearby rural communities, and pioneering the very first office paper recycling programs. The following pages highlight our growth in 2018 and illustrate our unwavering dedication to creating a city in which every New Yorker can truly thrive. Greenmarket Recycle Garden Education
GOOD FOOD FOR ALL
GrowNYCâ€™s 50 Greenmarkets support small family farms and ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the most nutritious, locally grown food the region has to offer. TOP ACHIEVEMENTS Greenmarket opened a new market at 6th Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This inaugural season also brought Farmers Markets for Kids, which provides market-based cooking and activities for children. We are proud to accept SNAP at all of our Greenmarket, Youthmarket, and Fresh Food Box locations, and thanks to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, we provide everyone making a SNAP purchase with additional Health Bucks to increase their purchasing power. This year SNAP and Health Bucks redemption reached $1,400,000 in sales.
We hosted our first Fresh Food Box Harvest Festival at Project Farmhouse, bringing customers and partners together in celebration of the harvest season. They participated in an apple pie competition, homemade play dough making, food giveaways, and family friendly activities. We operated 15 weekly Youthmarket farm stands, including a new location in Long Island City. Sixty teens received meaningful job experience as they placed orders, worked with customers, led cooking demos, and offered nutrition and health outreach to their communities.
We distributed more than 620,000 pounds of food to nonprofit organizations throughout NYC, including food pantries and farm stands, via our wholesale arm Greenmarket Co.
We graduated 18 new farmers from the FARMroots Farm Beginnings training course; three started their own farms and seven went on to participate in the shoulder-toshoulder mentorship program.
GrowNYC trained six community organizations on best practices gleaned from our Fresh Food Box and Youthmarket programs, helping them launch their own food retail programs.
Working with regional partners, we helped conserve 72 acres of prime NY farmland directly adjacent to a 142-acre piece of land we helped conserve in 2016.

CONSERVING AND PROTECTING
GrowNYC blankets the five boroughs with textile and food scrap collection sites and Stop ‘N’ Swaps®, and provides free training to make waste reduction easy for all. TOP ACHIEVEMENTS Each week New Yorkers dropped their compost at 53 different food scrap collection sites we operate across the city, increasing food scrap collection by 12% from 2017 and diverting over 12 million pounds of food scraps from the landfill. Finished compost supported community gardens and city parks. We worked with the NYC Department of Sanitation to enroll scores of residential buildings into NYC’s Organics Collection Program, including the Penn South/ Mutual Redevelopment Houses, a 2,800unit development on the west side of Manhattan, and 53 properties in the Bronx. We hosted 51 Stop ‘N’ Swap® events across the five boroughs. These events attracted more than 12,000 New Yorkers eager to practice waste reduction, diverting upwards of 123,000 pounds of materials from the landfill.
GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Program is supported by the New York City Department of Sanitation.
GrowNYC’s Greenmarket locations collected 6 million pounds of clothing, linens, and shoes for reuse or recycling – an increase of 14% from 2017. That’s the equivalent of 40 full Department of Sanitation packer trucks! GrowNYC’s partnership with Confucius Plaza in Manhattan’s Chinatown yielded our largest single textile collection event ever, diverting over 4.5 tons of textiles in one day. As part of the NYCHA Recycles! Program, GrowNYC conducted 153 recycling outreach events at NYCHA developments throughout the year, reaching thousands of residents and improving recycling participation. 800 intrepid volunteers generously gave their time to GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Program, making it easier for New Yorkers to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost.

GrowNYC builds and rejuvenates community gardens, urban farms and school gardens in all five boroughs. We support even more gardens through volunteer days, technical assistance, our annual plant sale, and school garden mini-grants.
TOP ACHIEVEMENTS We built 10 new community gardens, including two gardens on New York City Housing Authority property, adding 75,000 square feet of new green space. We renovated an additional 20 community gardens, providing them with new garden beds, picnic tables, benches, plants, and more. We built five new rainwater harvesting systems at community gardens across the city, adding to our network that now can collect up to 2 million gallons of rainwater each year. Our Annual Spring Plant Sale provided low-cost vegetable, herb, and flower plants to more than 600 neighborhood greening projects.
We added a 6,000 square foot cutting flower garden and a new perimeter garden to our Governors Island Teaching Garden, creating more space to engage and educate visitors in all aspects of urban farming. Corporate volunteers built 150 readymade garden beds that were donated to 15 gardens. GrowNYC funded 65 new school gardens or garden expansions through mini-grants. We hosted more than 40 hands-on workshops, teaching more than 700 educators how to use the garden as a powerful learning space.

EVERYONE CAN LEARN, EVERYONE CAN TEACH
GrowNYC fosters environmental stewardship by providing 70,000 children each year with programs that offer meaningful interactions with the natural environment. TOP ACHIEVEMENTS We welcomed 5,000 visitors to Project Farmhouse for sustainability programming, including a sold-out screening of Wasted featuring a panel with the NYC Department of Sanitation, City Harvest and our own compost program. At our one acre Governors Island Teaching Garden, in addition to youth education, we are broadening our garden-based education to include programming for senior citizens and differently-abled adults. We hosted five groups this season and plan to expand in 2019. GrowNYC has helped significantly increase recycling rates in Zero Waste Schools: organic waste by 106%, paper and cardboard by 75%, and metal, glass, plastic by 94%.
Teen interns in our Learn It Grow It Eat It program led hands-on education programs, including scavenger hunts, for 200 young children in the community gardens they tend. The children learned about where food comes from and pollinators, while the teens challenged themselves to be leaders and teachers. More than 5,000 K-12 students visited the Greenmarkets on scheduled school tours that introduced the concepts of seasonality, local food and sustainable agriculture. We worked with 47 New York City senior centers and nonprofit institutions serving adult communities to provide Greenmarket tours and nutrition education, benefitting the physical and emotional health of our cityâ€™s adult communities.

Success Stories From the Field GrowNYC: How were you first introduced to GrowNYC’s compost program? During the summer of last year, GrowNYC was tabling at La Familia Verde – a community garden and farmers market in the Bronx. They were asking people to get involved in their curbside compost collections. I was like, ‘I have to talk to them!’ and learned how to get a non-profit involved. Were you successful? Yes! I went back to my office and immediately filled out the application. Then someone from the NYC Department of Sanitation came and told us we could get the brown bins for compost collection. We were really excited about it, but we were only collecting from the youth in our program.

This is leading up to something, isn’t it? It is. Soon, David from GrowNYC reached out to us, and he came to our site to see how much we were collecting. We have a cook that prepares only healthy meals, no junk food, so we have a lot of good food scraps. David kept coming and decided to make us a drop-off site. Not many people came at first… How did that change? James, the compost coordinator from GrowNYC, did a lot of outreach. We noticed that a lot of people took the pamphlets, but they didn’t come back consistently. Then James started knocking on doors. Education is what was needed. We got a lot of people coming by the center and asking about the program. A lot of people were interested in getting bins themselves. Whenever someone expressed interest, we would help them fill out the application. If you are patient and work alongside the community, it will all fall into place.

Success Stories From the Field GrowNYC: Please tell us a little about yourself. I’m from West Africa. I was born in Niger and grew up in Mali. What is your vision for your farm? My farm will be called Dream Farm. I am actively looking in the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania for 30 to 50 acres of land so I can start my business. As an African, I’d like to serve my community by bringing fresh produce and the best cuts of meat to them. In 2018 I became an American, so I want to provide food to American communities as well. How did you first become involved with FARMroots? I was a customer at one of the Greenmarkets, and I went to the information tent to find out more about the market. Someone told me about GrowNYC’s FARMroots program. I started attending workshops in 2017, and that fall I joined their Farm Beginnings class. FARMroots is fantastic! They believe in my dream. Without FARMroots I wouldn’t know how to start.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a farmer? Access to land within two hours of the city, where my family lives. What are your plans for growing your business? With the help of GrowNYC, I’m exploring all the scenarios that could make Dream Farm a success. In my first year, I will grow a couple of acres of African vegetables. In my second year, I will raise sheep and guinea fowl, as well. Do you have advice for other aspiring immigrant farmers? Every time I have a problem or a new idea, I call GrowNYC. They are always there, helping me navigate a farming landscape that was unfamiliar to me. My best advice would be to contact FARMroots!

Success Stories From the Field GrowNYC: How did you first learn about GrowNYC’s Learn It Grow It Eat It program? I first met Mr. Saphire of GrowNYC at Bronx Regional High School, where I go to school. He would come every Thursday and teach us about fruits and vegetables. And we would even cook the fruits and vegetables. I had never tried gardening but I felt inspired. I wanted to do something hands-on and was so happy when Mr. Saphire hired me to work with him during spring break. After that, I felt like I wanted to go further and I applied for the summer internship.

Did you enjoy the program? Learn It Grow It Eat It was so helpful to me in a lot of ways! It gave me a lot of stuff to put on my resume. And I learned a lot of things, from teaching little kids to actually learning about plants and how fruits and vegetables are produced. We even did carpentry. I never had a real job. Working at the Learn It Grow It Eat It Youthmarket gave me a lot of experience with customers. Before I was a little shy. I didn’t want to really speak to anybody. I grew as a person. What was your favorite part of the program? Working with little kids was the best. By teaching them important things and working as a role model, I felt really good about myself. Before Learn It Grow It Eat It, I never really ate fruits or vegetables. I just used to eat junk food and fast food, but working with the fruits and vegetables made me change a lot of things in my diet. Before I didn’t know what a turnip was. Now I know. Oh, and my favorites – donut peaches and cherry tomatoes. Those are really good. I brought some home from the market for my mom to try.

Success Stories From the Field GrowNYC: Congratulations on the transformation of the Good Life Garden in Bushwick. What was the space like before? There was trash, liquor bottles, drug paraphernalia, pieces of a car, old basketball hoops, old shopping carts. Just years of people dumping heavily out there. Can you describe the change? All that trash is gone. The team at GrowNYC helped us lay down landscape fabric and wood chips and build raised beds. Working with them was a lot of fun. We planted collard greens, kale, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, mint, sage, lavender, and so much more. Before, there were no kids in this open space that had been there for 20 years! That’s because of how it looked and the unsafe vibe it gave off. Now there are always kids here. We reserved some of the space for the seniors in the neighborhood, and they plant vegetables that are important to their culture, like from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and China.
How has the larger community responded? People were crying that first week. When your neighborhood has been so neglected, you start to internalize that. It was so powerful when we began cleaning it up. I feel great when kids come in. It’s just a safe, colorful space for them to run around and check on the vegetables. We’re going to have it be a place where artists can come and showcase their work, and also make work that reflects the community of Bushwick. Whenever someone says, “How can I help?” I feel most inspired. I feel like these people have always wanted to help, but they didn’t know how to start. That’s what GrowNYC did. They came in with the supplies and resources to jump-start everything.
