Thursday S eminars TERI DIMARINO Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being "just a bather" to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/B’s remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers–in–training, "groomer wannabes", seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day–long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow–drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed. TOOLS OF THE TRADE & HOW TO USE THEM: From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed.

products and thoroughly cleaning and then drying the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time– saving equipment and techniques.

This program is six hours long and is included in the DO IT ALL package plan or it can be purchased separately. Includes tradeshow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See registration for price and schedule for times.

DEMATTING…IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE: Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave– down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time–consuming, hair–splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up. WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES??? SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY: Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a “groomers–eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but, what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno–speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.) GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BATHING & DRYING TIME: Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. DR. CLIFF FAVER Learn the science, the techniques, and product types to successfully put the “why” in what you do. A must for groomers, bathers, and office personnel in the grooming shop and veterinary clinic alike.

1) UNDERSTANDING HAIR & SKIN: Learn the basic anatomy and function of

the skin and hair. This is a critical foundation for this class and everything a groomer or bather does. This hour will explain a lot of the science about how nutrition, sebum and basic anatomy work so you can understand the “why” in what you do.

2) UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE IN COAT TYPES & THE PRODUCTS THAT NEED TO BE USED: In this class you will learn the needs of the different

coat types so you can make better decisions in the products you use for maximum results.

3) UNDERSTANDING THE COMMON THINGS THAT GO WRONG & THAT LEAD TO SKIN ISSUES: Always wonder why these skin conditions occur and reoccur? Does technique play a factor? Could I have caused that issue? When the client or veterinary accused me of causing the issue, is that true?

4) THE SCIENCE TO FOLLOW IN TREATING SKIN ISSUES: Learn methods,

techniques and types of products to fix the skin problems when they occur. Learn principles that will lead to success when treating skin issues, how to grow hair back on those shaved down dogs, and why steroids and antibiotics and the typical therapies for skin don’t always work. ESTABLISHING YOUR GERIATRIC GROOMING CERTIFICATE CLASS

IDENTITY

JOSHUA MORALES

Do you spend your days cleaning up dirty, matted dogs? Have easy maintenance trims become a way of life in your salon? Would you like to see more customers with dogs in great shape-wanting breed profile trims? Salons thrive on servicing a broad spectrum of clients, but when the scales are lopsided it may be time to evaluate your customers’ perception of you. Are you viewed as a shop that only does easy maintenance and shavedown trims-or are you identified as styling only show dogs? In other words, do your clients view you as a specialty or full-service business? In this thought-provoking seminar, Josh will discuss how to “establish an identity” that attracts the type of clientele you desire.

MINDY DINWIDDIE In this program, you will learn correct products and handling procedures to keep your geriatrics safe. Hopefully every dog we groom will grow to a ripe old age and knowing how to properly handle them can mean the difference to your clients. Everyone attending this class will receive a certificate of completion.

VICTOR ROSADO Learn the universe of grooming from the eyes and hands of a world traveling master groomer, Victor will also share the trends, the actual evolution and the adventures. This seminar features live demos.

THE 15 COAT TYPES

AND HOW TO CORRECTLY GROOM THEM JENNIFER BISHOP–JENKINS While there has never been an official list of dog coat types for the grooming industry, maybe there ought to be! While individual dogs vary even within breeds, knowing what tools and techniques are appropriate to the coat type presented to you for grooming is essential. Jennifer has identified and compiled the fifteen distinct coat types that require specific and separate grooming strategies and equipment. Each one has “Do’s and Don’ts” based on the actual scientific, genetic, and physical structure of the hair or fur of that type dog. Learn how to groom each coat type based on the best practices for those breeds.

She will also briefly discuss coat maintenance and product selection to help you deliver that “just stepped out of the show ring” finish. SHEAR BALANCE Krystal Purcell GroomTeam USA member Krystal Purcell gives you the basic lowdown on all things shear! She’ll show you the importance of thumb and finger guards, explain the differences between thinners, blenders, and chunkers, and tell you how you can improve your scissor technique just by holding your shears differently. SUPERCHARGE YOUR GROOMING Victor Rosado In this seminar you will find out how to make the best out of your grooming by adding up extras that will make your cash drawer smile. These are the

financial aspects that can maximize your everyday grooming. GROOMERS GUIDE TO HERDING AND WORKING GROUP DOGS Jennifer Bishop–Jenkins How did Working and Herding Group dogs contribute to the development of modern human economic systems? What grooming techniques are right for these large, intelligent dogs with the natural, often heavy coats? Their grooms and coat types are diverse, far beyond their “Bath/Brush” only stereotype. This session will reveal the origin of all 7 groups of dog breeds, with special focus on the Working and Herding group dogs, and will help any groomer, from beginner to master, categorize coat types and learn the best strategies to groom each type. Learn what grooming tools and techniques are best suited for each coat type. This workshop will describe, breed by breed, the specific grooming needs of all the breeds and coat types in these two groups, while addressing the controversy and explaining the correct care of the most common and natural of all dog coat types: the Double Coat. CARVING YOUR WAY TO INCREASED REVENUE Milena Kon Milena is a multiple award winner in abstract runway competition. Come out and take this simple yet intriguing carving class that you can’t miss out on. She will be demonstrating the use of different blades and techniques to achieve that elegant look that will simply amaze your clients. This class will open a new revenue stream for your shop or mobile, as it offers you new ideas on how to get creative with just learning these simple carving techniques. Go ahead and give it a try, and see your income rise. Then you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner! GroomExpoWest.com

Please come join Sue and other groomers in your situation in this open discussion. OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS Cheryl Purcell Is getting bit part of the job? It shouldn’t be. We need to learn the hazards of our profession and how to minimize the effects of the job on ourselves. Cheryl will go over some of the most common hazards, how to identify them, and most importantly, how to minimize or prevent them. Angela Kumpe will share what she has learned from years of experience handling all temperaments of dogs in all types of situations. She will focus on showing you how to keep your dog comfortable and safe. DON’T MAKE MY POODLE LOOK LIKE A POODLE Cat Opson Every groomer has heard it in their career: a customer walks in with their dog and says, “Whatever you do, don’t make it look like a poodle!” You look down and say “Ok, I won’t make your poodle look like a poodle!” While you are wondering why they even bothered to get a poodle. Lucky for you there are other trims to make any poodle look super cute while not looking anything “like” one. Cat will go through some of those fun styles that are sure to help you in your shop. MOBILE GROOMING: WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU! Krystal Purcell Learn from GroomTeam USA member, Krystal Purcell how she has dealt with some of the not so common mobile issues. THE CAPTIVATING CLIPPED WESTIE Tammy Siert In this session, Tammy will groom a Westie to perfection by giving it a stylish breed trim using clippers. Practical for the pet parent, the

clipped Westie is what you mostly encounter in your salon. Tammy will discuss the proper pattern, strip and clip techniques, and tips to groom to breed profile and keep that Westie looking sharp! SECRETS OF HAND STRIPPING Kathryn Dixon From strip and clips to breed standard show trims, learn how to make the best of a coarse coat in any condition. Kathryn will go over must–have tools, common techniques, understanding the coarse coat, and how to make any coarse–coated dog—mutt or purebred—look their best. EARS, BUTTS, AND TEETH, OH MY! Dr. Cliff Faver Come learn the answers to those burning questions of what to do (or not do), and the legalities and liabilities associated with these decisions. To pluck or not pluck ears? Are anal glands my responsibility? Can I add teeth scaling as a new service? What are the most important things I need to know for the health of the pet? WEST COAST IS THE BEST COAST Blake Hernandez I may not know what it’s like to shut down for a winter storm, or why there would ever be salt on the sidewalks, but I know all the ins and outs of Grooming Greatness in the Golden State. From earthquake procedure to fox tail awareness and everything in between! Watch and learn as Blake presents all of the secret tricks and tips that keep our dogs not only stylish, but safe—and every human involved stays sane! IT’S A SNAP! SNAP–ON COMBS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR EVERYDAY GROOMS Mackensie Murphy Top competitor and GroomTeam USA member Mackensie has spent her entire career in a salon doing your everyday pet trims.
