Brusher Bather

THURSDAY

Certificate Program

WITH TERI DIMARINO Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wannabes”, seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE AND HOW TO USE THEM: From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed. DEMATTING… IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE: Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time-consuming, hairsplitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.

WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES??? SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY: Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride.

Teri takes a “groomers-eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but, what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.)

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BATHING & DRYING TIME: Bathing and drying are the most underes-

timated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products and thoroughly cleaning and then drying the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques.

This program is six hours long and is included in the Liberty Pass or can be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Paving The Way To Success

A GUIDE TO BUSINESS & INDIVIDUAL CHANGES WITH JOEY VILLANI

THURSDAY

Joey Villani has been referred to as the “Dogfather” because of his decades of experience in the grooming industry. Joey knows what it takes to be a successful groomer and business owner. In this brand new, four hour program Joey will share his knowledge and expertise, and answer your questions to help you maximize the success of your salon.

THE THINGS THAT MUST BE DONE:

Sometimes all we know is grooming, but as we move further into our careers, we find out sometimes that's just not enough. Joey will show you what it takes to make a perfect operation. Learn the art of advertising without breaking your budget, asking and knowing all the right questions when dealing with customers, commanding the perfect staff, how to have the safest salon, the art of keeping your clients, and pricing your work.

THE MIND IS WHERE ALL SUCCESS IS BUILT: After doing numerous seminars

all over the world, it was made perfectly clear that most problems start with the person - employers and employees both. If you are feeling you are not all you want to be, then this is the seminar for you. This seminar will guide you through some of the toughest moments in life. See how these proven methods can change your thinking

AKC Salon

Certification

SAFETY IN THE SHOP

and make you the best at all you do.

WHERE'S THE MONEY?: It sometimes

seems the more pets we groom the less we seem to make. In most cases it's not the amount of pets but how we manage our funds and the set-up of the salon. Have you ever put together a business plan or know how much your space is costing you? In this segment we will cover these questions and more money bleeding topics.

ASK THE DOGFATHER: Not sure, confused, or just want to make sure? We want to help and answer whatever is on your mind. If your thinking it, so is someone else. Ask Joey any question or questions about running a successful operation. This is a great way to network with other groomers in the room, recognizing helpful hints or problems in common.

WITH SUSAN SHOLAR The American Kennel Club recognizes that grooming is important to the overall health, comfort and well-being of pets. Setting the standard in groom safety to ensure these needs are met for all pets in salon, The AKC is proud to offer the Safety in Salons Certification Program to groomers and salons. As reputable and quality pet care professionals, groomers should consider the safety and welfare of the pets entrusted to their care. The Safety in Salon course will review best practices focusing on pet care, health, and safety. Topics covered include accident avoidance, disease awareness, and sanitation. All groomers who attend will be eligible, at no additional charge, to become AKC Safety Certified Groomers and receive a frameable certificate and other great benefits. This course is also an important part of the requirements for the AKC Safety in the Salon Certification. This salon certification gives salon owners a means to show their commitment to the health and safety of pets and in return receive valuable marketing support from the AKC.

“Paving the Way to Success” and “AKC Salon Certification” are each 4 hours long. Both programs are included in the Liberty Pass or may be purchased separately. Includes Trade Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. ALL AMERICAN GROOMING SHOW 2017

We will also address some of the myths/ misconceptions from a scientific approach of some of the disease processes we commonly are exposed to. You will learn some of the common hazards you are faced with and common sense ways to minimize your exposure to them.

PET WESTIE JANICE FEHN

Join Janice for Pet Westies with correct profile, length and look. Learn how to retain some wire texture in your pet trims and tricks to get that head and tail shape correct.

MOBILE GROOMING TIPS & TRICKS ANGELA KUMPE

Angela will share advice, tips and tricks on many topics of Mobile Grooming. These bits of information can help you while you build a successful mobile grooming business. Some of these topics include scheduling, increasing tips, invoicing, price increases, setting rules

and sticking to them, marketing, cancellations, add on services, latch key services, and much more.

Included is a history of how it all began, thanks to the Godfather of Creative Styling, Jerry Schinberg.

DON’T GIVE IT AWAY! HOW MUCH ARE YOU WORTH AN HOUR? CHERYL PURCELL

DREAMY DROP COATS VALERIE PARTYNSKI

Many groomers set their prices by what the shop down the street charges. That’s not how we should be setting prices. What you need to charge per dog and what I need to charge per dog are different because our costs to operate are different. Every groomer should know what they need to generate per hour in order to make a living wage.

ERGONOMICS OF HAND SCISSORING DEBORAH WALKER

In this class you will gain the knowledge on how important ergonomics is in the salon. Learn how to protect your hands before scissoring. Learn techniques to stop Carpal Tunnel from getting worse or eliminating it forever. Deborah Walker will be covering how your body structure is affected by the positioning of your hands with ergonomic techniques. Learn how to utilize equipment in an ergonomic way and how to apply methods to reduce grooming time and stress on your body.

THE TIMELESS SPIRAL TRIM DAWN OMBOY

The Spiral trim was first done 1981 at the Atlanta Pet Fair. Learn more about the beginning of this timeless classic that was the basis of Creative Styling as we know it today. The Spiral has continued to delight groomers to this very day and has been beautifully executed by many over the years. Dawn will show you how to set the pattern in a live demo and top it off with a bit of Airbrushing instruction.

Valerie will show you how to do a stylish, but easy maintenance trim on a drop coated dog. Being one of the harder coat types to work with, she will show you how to get a smooth finish in a short amount of time using snap on combs and thinning shears.

KERRY BLUE TAMMY SIERT

The beautiful Kerry Blue terrier has distinct features and a soft coat. Tammy will demonstrate how to achieve the correct angulation and breed profile with these stylish terriers. From the competition ring or the pets that come in your salon, you can always give the proper hair style that may be slightly modified for maintenance purposes. Tammy will give you easy guidelines and tips that you can use in your own shop.

HOW TO NOT GET BIT! SCOTT WASSERMAN

This seminar explains the “hows” and “whys” a dog may bite. It covers everything from puppy development, noise sensitivity, handling puppies, geriatric dogs and special needs pets.

CUSTOMER SERVICE 101 BRETT WILSON

What does it take to run a successful business? Customers of course! Far too often we tend to forget they pay us to perform a service for them. What should we be doing to gain their trust and better their experience for their four-legged family member? Brett will walk you through what he feels is a step by step guide to keeping them coming back for more. ALL AMERICAN GROOMING SHOW 2017

WEEKEND TOPICS puppy grooming an additional revenue source.

TRAIN THE PUPPY & THE OWNER: DEVELOPMENT & GROOMING LARA LATSHAW & MELISSA SIEDENSTRANG

LION CUT OR NOT? DANELLE GERMAN

Melissa and Lara will explain puppy development and behavior. When groomers understand the puppy brain, they can be more effective when getting puppies used to being groomed – and have much happier clients! Topics will include the nuts and bolts of puppy development, the socialization of puppies, and some training techniques groomers can implement. They will also cover business practices to make the process better for everyone, as well as some marketing ideas to make

Lion cuts are a popular groom style for cats, either because of owner preference or because a cat is severely matted or pelted. Know when a lion cut is the right choice and when it is not so as to avoid unnecessary dangers and incomplete grooms. In this seminar, Danelle will explain how to determine when a lion cut is appropriate and when it is not, how long it should take to complete, and what methods and steps to follow for a clean, smooth finish.

THE BICHON HEAD: FROM SHOW TO SHORT LINDSEY DICKEN

Lindsey will start by doing a show type head, then demonstrate three more styles on the same dog, ending with a short easy maintenance style. Any of those could be applied to your client dogs!

SHEERLY ELEGANT POODLES KELLY KNIGHT

Are you intimidated by grooming poodles? In this class Kelly will go over some of the most important points on balance and breed profile to help you add elegance and style to your poodles.

Rescue Remedy and a chicken sandwich, we were back. Josh was regaining his strength, but we had sat out of the competition and lost valuable time. I wasn’t sure if I could complete him with the time I had left. Kathy Rose announced “scissors down” just as I added a couple feathers for a headpiece. After all that coat growth, I just didn’t have time to finish what I had planned. We still managed to get third place and the coveted People’s Choice Award. Lori again got first place, and the “Lion King” managed to remain undefeated. I decided to go ahead and take the design to one more show: Atlanta Pet Fair. I just had to complete this design that I had worked so hard to perfect. Just a couple weeks before Atlanta, my mother passed away; I was devastated. I had no intentions of going anywhere, especially so soon after her death. My mother was my soul, my greatest fan, my seamstress, and my inspiration. In the days before Atlanta, my entire family pushed me to go on and do what my mom would have wanted me to do. “She would want you to go, Angela!” is what my dad was telling me. I agreed to go but wasn’t sure if I would compete. I just wasn’t up to it. The night before we left, I told my dad, “I will work on my dog, and if I can do it, I will. For my mom!” It was time to get the dogs ready, and I am sure everyone thought I had lost my mind. I just kept talking to my mom while I was working on Josh, just like she was standing there. When I was done, I was so excited. It was beautiful, and win or lose, I was happy. I pulled it together and completed the design; my mom would have been so proud. We won first place and People’s Choice.
