ALL WRAPPED UP with Bullring

Boot Camp Fall in line with this winter’s military-inspired look for men There will be no excuse for anything less than a perfectly polished look this winter, as menswear gets its marching orders. Which means it’s time for fellas to wave goodbye to scruffy chic and salute a smart new military look. Last time this trend made an appearance it was all about top brass tailoring in red and black. However, this season’s spin on the look is much more rank and file. So, lets get down to the essential bits of kit. First sign up for your military inspired jacket, then team this up with jeans, or for the full effect try some of this winter’s cargo pants. Other must haves include khaki jumpers, gilets and army boots.

Rain, rain, go away... In Britain, moaning about the weather is practically a national sport. Especially when it rains. This autumn add another, more uplifting, dimension to your meteorological discussions - what items you can buy to deal with the downpours. Shopping can cure most things, after all. What you need are some bright brollies and chic macs. You’ll be begging the gods to let it rain after buying that haul. On the coat side of things macs are a perennial favourite of the fashionistas, and it’s easy to see why. They look equally smart with

jeans or a dress – and happily are completely practical in the k e e p i n g - r a i n - o ff - t h e - w e a re r stakes. Khaki is a popular colour, inkeeping with the current trend for military style. Those who prefer a splash of colour to brighten up the gloomy days, however, will not be disappointed, as many stores are carrying a variety of colourful beauties. Trenchcoats are abound in red and yellow as well as black and white, and Marks & Spencers even has matching umbrellas (as above). 3

Christmas is just around the corner and as the big day gets closer you may be searching for the perfect gift for someone special. We’ve done the hard work for you and chosen some of our favourite must-have gifts available at Bullring this Christmas

Gifts for Him Buying for the man in your life can always be a tricky one especially if you want to get something that will dissuade him from spending the whole of Christmas in front of the Playstation. This jacket from Duck and Cover £70, located on Bullring’s Upper Mall West, is a great investment for the winter months and offers an excellent excuse to get him up off the sofa and on some romantic winter walks.

If you’re buying for a massive music fan but don’t want to risk buying the wrong CD or vinyl then why not opt for a pair of headphones? River Island has a great pair (£39.99), which will ensure that the receiver will be looking super-stylish too.

Gifts for Her For those lovely ladies you’re looking to impress, shoes are always a great option. This season is all about the aviator - the jacket, glasses and of course the boots. Many of the top high street brands have fully embraced the trend and offer their own version of this season’s must-have shoe but one of our favourites is Red or Dead’s ‘Heidi’ £99.99 available at Schuh.

When shopping for the fashion-forward stylista you should head to the UK’s first and only Forever 21. Located on Bullring’s Upper West Mall the store offers affordable fast-fashion. This studded faux leather jacket is just £39.80 and will make a great addition to any fashionista’s wardrobe.

Gifts for Both If you think pampering is the best gift you could give this Christmas, then try Umberto Giannini located on Selfridges Level 4. The prestigious loftinspired salon offers a wide range of treatments for both men and women, which is sure to leave them feeling pampered and refreshed. And if you’ve still not found the perfect gift for the one that’s hard to please then simply head to Bullring’s Customer Service Desk to purchase a gift card. The Bullring Gift Card offers the full Bullring experience and can be spent at most of the centre’s 160 shops and 25 restaurants. Load it with up to £1,000 to spend to offer that special someone the chance to explore the centre’s shops, top restaurants, salons and spas. STARRING STYLE GURU GOK WAN AND NEW BOYBAND INJUSTICE Hundreds of fashion brands, non-stop catwalk shows, leading industry experts and the UK’s favourite celebrities all under one roof - there’s no other live fashion event quite like Clothes Show Live

Office’s Christmas collection has just landed and stores are gleaming with glittery courts, metallic stilettos and shoes with more bejeweling than Kanye’s new smile. But don’t think this is just for the ladies, as Office’s new autumn/winter collection has a great selection of potent patents and seriously edgy footwear for the fellas too. Office’s key trends this season include Country Heritage, Military Vintage, Minimal Luxe and Glam Rock so you’ll definately find some looks you’ll love in store. 1

Christmas Frosting If you’re the kind of girl who calls her jewellery “frosting”, you’d better get ready for a blizzard of bling this Christmas. Statement necklaces, bold brooches, chandelier earrings and stacks of rings all worn at once – more is definitely more this winter. It’s all about the vintage too, as high street stores showcase stunning period-inspired pieces. Really, you can’t go wrong if you look like you’ve been rummaging around in your grandma’s jewellery box – and put it all on at once. If you’re piling it on, you may want to stick to costume jewellery pieces (leaving enough pennies for pressies). Accessorize has got some seriously sexy vintage ranges, and for a statement necklace on a shoestring pick up Primark’s black lacestyle choker (£4). For delicious Art Deco style brooches try Talullah Tu or

For stunning chunky rings try Martine Wester’s crystal cocktail beauties available in a variety of colours, Mosiac’s stunning red Eva ring (£24) or Bags of Sparkle for their more fun take on bling. River Island have a great range of antique style pieces, however, if you are planning to blow all the budget this year House of Fraser have some more extravagent ranges. For simple modern pieces try Kit Heath for a range of sterling silver, super long chains and gobstopper style rings starting from just £16.95. Finally we love Marks & Spencers take on the vintage theme with this gorgeous necklace - and at a bargain £18, this is going straight on our christmas list! all photography courtesy of PRshots

DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT Our list of must-know contacts and phone numbers

Money matters - Especially if it’s yours Living city life to the max can sometimes take a toll on your finances. Making the most of everything Birmingham has to offer might mean that keeping an eye on your finances takes a back seat. However, it’s important to know where to turn if something goes wrong. The Financial Ombudsman Service is a free service, set up by a law with the power to sort out problems between consumers and financial businesses. They can look at complaints about a wide range of banking, insurance and other fiancial matters - from problems with a credit card or loan to a disputed motor insurance claim. Your first step should always be to get in touch with the business involved. If you remain unhappy with the outcome you may be able to refer the problem to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent body that doesn’t take sides. It looks at the circumstances of the problem and aims to reach a fair and reasonable outcome. CASE STUDY: MOBILE PHONE INSURANCE Simon accidentally left his mobile phone in a shop. When he returned to collect it, it was missing. The phone was insured, but his insurer rejected the claim saying the phone had been left ‘unattended’ and that the claim would not be paid. The Ombudsman agreed there was an exclusion in the policy for items left ‘unattended’. However, as this severely restricted the cover, we said this should have been brought to Simon’s attention when he took out the policy. As the insurer could not prove they had done this - or that the consumer had acted carelessly - the ombudsman told the insurer to pay Simon’s claim. TIPS TO AVOID GETTING CAUGHT OUT 1 Keep track of your spending - set yourself a weekly budget and stick to it. 2 As tempting as it is to get a friend to withdraw cash for you, never give your PIN to anyone else. Never write your PIN number on your card or leave a copy of your PIN near your card. 3 If you think you are going to go overdrawn talk to your bank as soon as possible. Be honest with the bank, they may be able to help. 4 Check your statements regularly, while it may not be the most interesting thing to do, it’s important to check that you made all the transactions listed. 5 Keep on track with your credit card, try to pay off more than the minimun payment each month to limit the interest payable. 6 While it may be tempting to have a parent insured as the ‘main driver’ on your car to save money, if you have to make a claim and the car is mainly for your use, the insurance company is unlikely to pay out if you claim.
