Marianne Vos

With an abundance of world championship titles both on and off-road, Marianne Vos needs no further introduction. She is a continuing source of inspiration and a great ambassador for cycling as a sport.

A day with the riders

A training camp is not only about training your muscles. Each year for those pro riders, it means fresh air. New bike. New kit. New mates. So what are they really doing there? Follow our adventure through a day with the WM3 Pro Cycling Team’s riders.

A team

Being a pro rider means working by pedaling. If you are lucky, your colleagues can become your friends. It is the perfect opportuniy to meet each other and chat together. On the bike. At lunch. Every time & everywhere.

A bike

WM3 Pro Cycling riders are using Ridley frames: Liz SL - with green graphics to emphasize the WM3 Energy´s focus on creating sustainable energy solutions.

A road

They are pro riders. Road lovers. Race winners. They share a passion for the asphalt and the need for speed.

A backbone

What’s behind? Professional riders need professional staff to give their best on the bike. Setting up the gears, switching the power meter, adding a new tape, changing a bearing. That’s what the mechanic is doing ten hours a day.

A race

The riders are hungry for more. Hunting the Victory.

Helgi, her son, is still in cycling bibs and leaning over the table. His index finger is hovering over the map just like he´s about to use it for braking. The green nuances and altitude curves indicate the Faroe signature scenery: Soft, grassy hills inviting for a picnic, dramatically ending in lethal hundred meter vertical drops straight into the ocean. It´s a Nordic landscape with no thousand meter peaks to climb, but with plenty of smaller mountaintops to conquer for the outdoor minded. ´This spot is so beautiful - We went there in full sunlight and blue sky – We could see for miles´ His finger stops, and he puts it down on a mountain top near the sea. He then grabs his phone ´I´ll show you a photo! I want a trail to pass this point´. The Faroe Islands is situated roughly halfway between Scotland and Iceland. As the name suggests, The Faroe Islands is a series of islands – 18 in total taking up 1399 square kilometers of raw terrain in the North Atlantic Ocean, and connected via bridges, tunnels, boats and helicopters. This is the land of steep rocks, grassy hills, waterfalls, fog,

mist and sheep. The name Faroe is an ancient word for sheep, and the animals play a huge part in both nowadays´ businesses and yesterday’s traditions. With less than 50.000 people living on the 18 islands, and most of them concentrated in the bigger cities (which are no way big), the sheep rule the mighty terrain, and share it only with the occasional bird watcher or hiker. Helgi, a native Faroese now living in Denmark, is a dedicated mountain biker, and has his eyes and wheels set on exploring the sleeping beauty of the Faroe Islands. ´The landscape is stunning, and only few people are using it for leisure purpose. It´s truly the great outdoors, with a very rough and Nordic feel to it! It´s a completely unique experience to ride your mountain bike up here´ Helgi says and turns his face into a broad smile, that must be straight out of his Viking genes. Faroe MTB Club Helgi is born and raised in the Faroe Islands and now lives in Denmark, north of busy Copenhagen in a small village next to the forest. He has less than five minutes to the mountain bike trails, and is a dedicated rider, balancing his ambitions between making good results

in races and having fun on the bike. Besides being part of the Danish cross country scene he competes in stage races such as the Andalucía Bike Race and Swiss Epic and lives and breathes for mountain biking, always looking for the next adventure. Whenever the opportunity arises, Helgi grabs the chance to travel back home to his birth place to visit his family and to explore the terrain of the 18 North Atlantic islands. Together with his fellow mountain bike riders back home, he took steps to start the Faroe Islands Mountain Bike Club. The purpose of the club is to create a community of riders on the Faroe Islands that share a passion for mountain biking. With the development of a new trail area in Torshavn, the club hopes to attract more members and to develop the mountain biking culture in the future. Helgi and his friend Lisette get their bikes ready, and the photographer snaps the obligatory shots of them preparing, and then the photographer is gone. again if they lose balance the first time and need to clip out of their pedals. They explore the natural challenges in the terrain and slowly make their way towards the horizon. Non-existing trails Helgi has initiated a dialogue with the Faroese tourist board Visit Faroe Islands, and has presented them with the potential in creating marked trails for mountain bikers, both for the local riders, but in the bigger perspective the mountain bike trails will be of huge interest for travelling riders coming to the Faroe Islands to experience the outdoors. The Tourist Board is looking at this opportunity with positive eyes, as they see a growing potential in active tourism. With all the current trails as a starting point, Helgi has defined two kinds of trails on the Faroe Island: First on the list are the currently non-existing XCO trails for training and racing. There´s a municipality plan to establish such trails in the city of Torshavn (capital of the Faroe Islands), up in the terrain near the Hotel Torshavn. This plan is due to an effort made by the Faroe MTB Club (MTB.fo), and the result will be a series of trails with berms, rock gardens, flow sections and more. This will be the

´home ground´ of the Faroe MTB Club. The second type are the trails that Helgi sees as ´adventure trails´. Current trails that will bring the rider in close experience with the stunning scenery and provide an excellent ride. These trails are both existing single trails and the occasional gravel roads. By connecting these to new trails, plus adding markings along the routes, the Faroe Islands can present an amazing grid of trails for the adventurous rider. Vertical drop of a hundred meters As the sun leaves the sky and gently dives into the ocean, Helgi and Lisette have found a trail a bit from the lake shore, a trail that leads towards the horizon. The trail is soggy and hard to ride as the last bit is uphill. They shift gears, lean forward and push hard on the pedals. They´re driven by their curiosity and an urge to explore new places on their mountain bikes. Helgi can´t imagine that there has ever been a mountain bike at this location. Hikers yes, but mountain bikers most likely not. Helgi´s love for mountain biking is genuine and combined with his urge to create opportunities for other riders, it´s only fair to say that Helgi is a Nordic pioneer, and an adventurer by heart.

With a mixed feeling of complete horror and utter fascination Lisette is standing where the landscape ends. From riding with comfort and a confident feeling of ground beneath her wheels, she´s now experiencing a complete disintegration of gravity and physics! It´s an arena for the dizzy to break into tears and for the strong to feel dignity. Hundred meters below her feet the roaring Atlantic Ocean is bashing against the rocks that rise straight from the ocean and dramatically reach for the sky. A vertical palisade that will make the blood freeze in even the toughest man. It´s like a giant took a big bite of the island and left a piece for later. Gravity comes back and soon Helgi and Lisette are cruising the hills along the edge. In the last light of the day they ride with big smiles and firm grips. It´s flow, it´s the moment, it´s being alive on the Faroe Islands. The vision Back at the dinner table at Helgi´s parents, the talk is all about mountain

biking. Who´s winning the races, where do you find the best mountain bike photos online and which magazines have the best reviews of gear. Then the home baked cake is put on the table, and together with cups of coffee being poured, the sweet scent is doing its magic – the crew is comfortably drowsy from the day´s exploring. The way back from the vertical rocks to the lake shore parking was in the dark with head lamps and rider´s souls saturated with satisfaction and fascination. This is what Helgi wants other riders to experience, and the question naturally is: What is the next step in the project? Helgi would like to get inspiration and practical knowledge from other locations that have gone through a similar development. From bike parks to bigger trail systems with markings, gradings, maintenance plan and a community. Inspiration from these places will help him define and more precisely describe his vision for mountain biking on the Faroe Islands, so it can be presented to the right people. It could start with a downloadable

map indicating the top 5 existing trails along with the top 5 scenery spots that can be reached by mountain bike. From Gowith to markings GripGrab.com there it could evolve along selected routes, info boards at the trail heads and motivating local businesses to consider the possibilities with such a perspective. ´The first step is now taken. Let´s see where this goes. It´s the beginning of an adventure – not just for me, but for every rider and adventurer that decides to come here and explore.´ says Helgi.

The weather can be unpredictable. Be sure to bring gloves, shoe covers and rain- and windproof gear even in summer time. Here´s Helgi´s list of preferred gear: “For gloves I highly praise the GripGrab Vertical for summer rides. They have outstanding grip, thanks to the new InsideGrip technology, and will protect your hands in case you crash. If you plan to go in spring or autumn, I suggest to bring an insulated glove like the GripGrab Windster. For shoe covers I recommend the GripGrab RaceAqua X for an all-round, all weather cover. If it gets cold, then the insulated RaceThermo X will keep your feet warm and dry. As the countryside is remote with few people, and the weather can change in a heartbeat, always bring a backpack with plenty of energy, a good windbreaker jacket, spare tube, tools and a comfortable cap that will protect your ears. It´s of course mandatory to bring a GPS device and a smartphone, and always let somebody know about your planned ride.”

What type of bike is best for the Faroe Islands? When asked about this, Helgi explains: “You will get an experience with whatever mountain bike you ride here, but I will say that the trail capable full suspension mountain bike will make you smile the most. Lately my preferred bike has been the Trek Fuel EX plus which is a 140/130 travel 27.5 plus sized tire bike. The beefier tires fit perfectly for both the rockier trails and for the soft grass in the mountains. Because of the often steep technical climbing I tend to look for, I like the 2x11 gearing on this bike. When I go on my XC bikes fooling around I have an 1x11 gearing that does the job fine. But I much prefer to go with a trail bike as it is like these bikes are made for the adventures on the Faroe Islands. I still must try an Enduro bike up here, but it could be good fun as well. There are just no built trails with jumps and such so the lighter climbing mid travel trail bikes seem perfect to me right now. That being said, even road biking is great here as everything is astonishingly beautiful no matter what way you point your choice of bike!”

OFF THE BIKE For the short moments, when not riding your bike: Three movies about cycling Words by Thomas Jean Nielsen

TOUR DE PHARMACY

UNREAL

A SUNDAY IN HELL

This is a mockumentary (mock and documentary) about the 1982 Tour de France. It features stars like Andy Samberg, Jeff Goldblum, Orlando Bloom, Julia Ormond, Danny Glover, Dolph Lundgren, Kevin Bacon and Mike Tyson who really wanted to be a bike rider but became a boxer - and even a much criticized appearance by Lance Armstrong. After making the tennis mockumentary ´7 Days in Hell´, Samberg and his crew looked for a sport that could be displayed cheaply, and when looking at cycling the team found “...so much strange behavior surrounding the sport.” Drugs is just one of the subjects in this movie, but it’s the drugs and of course Tour de France that gave the movie its title. The film’s race scenes were shot in four days, and to maintain an 80’s aesthetic, much of the race footage was shot on Betamax cameras, with ´sideline footage´ shot on VHS. Are you in the mood for some crazy comedy, but can’t let go of your bike? Then this is probably the only movie that can satisfy your needs, and with its only 40 minutes in length, there’s still time for a ride outside in all weather.

The list of star riders is impressive in this 45 minutes long movie, and it is best described with the filmmaker’s own words: “While many people are taught from a young age to prepare for the so-called ´real world,´ there are some who tear past the illusion of everyday life and explore wild lands of wonder and limitless potential from the seat of a mountain bike”. The movie is build up by sequences that start with insights into a group of rider´s ‘real world’ tedious life, and their escape through a Narnia like portal to an Unreal world, where they are riding downhill on an icy mountain side, race with wild horses, escape from a bear in the woods, or do stunts like 18 meters front flips. This movie combines bike action with stunning wildlife footage and the 45 minutes feel like only 15 minutes! Luckily Red Bull TV host some of the greatest bike movies ever made, so there are plenty to dive into and escape your own tedious reality.

This is a classic Danish documentary film directed by Jørgen Leth. The film is a chronology of the 1976 Paris–Roubaix bicycle race from the perspective of participants, organizers and spectators. It’s truly a must see for everyone who is either a bike enthusiast or just wants to learn and understand the hype surrounding the bike world. The film captures not just the events of the 1976 edition, but the atmosphere of a professional race, and it shows us just why the Paris–Roubaix is the most famous and important race of the spring classics. You get up close with legendary riders such as Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Freddy Maertens, and Francesco Moser. “You can see every bead of sweat on the cyclists and every smashed-up ankle. It really makes you never want to get on a bike again. But it is an amazing film.” Nick Fraser, BBC commissioning editor. “Arguably the best film ever made about professional cycling” - Peter Cowie, International Film Guide.

WHAT IS A

GRAVEL Words by Peter Ebro, photos by Alex Buck

T

he Gravel bike – also known as the all-road bike or adventure bike, is a bike designed with the benefits of the road bike but with the ability to ride on more rough surfaces, typically such as gravel roads, dirt roads and not too technical singletracks. This might sound like a cyclocross bike, but with the cross bike being a machine built for speed with a more ´agressive´ design, the gravel bike grants you a more comfortable two wheeled platform that allows you to go off the beaten path for a day of discovering or to go on muti-day adventures with luggage. As the gravel bike presents a lot of opportunities to enjoy riding in very different environments, it´s interesting to delve into how the gravel bike - or adventure bike - is designed.

A road bike to go offroad We can very quickly establish that the gravel bike is closer related to the road bike and the cyclo cross bike than to a mountainbike, so don´t expect your gravel bike to conquer rock gardens and big drops. You will find zero suspension on a gravel bike (except for the suspension you get out of deflating the tyres). So is the gravel bike just a road bike with bigger and more knobby tyres? No, there´s more to it than just tyre size. As the road bike is built with the purpose of going fast, the geometry of the gravel bike differs from the road bike in several ways. Generally, the gravel bike is built with more comfort in mind.

BIKE?

The geometry The top tube is sloping in order to provide a comfortable standover height. This adds comfort and relief to your ride, when you dismount due to obstacles on your course, or when you´re bikepacking and need to stop for navigation. The taller headtube provides a more upright position, thus adding comfort to the (longer) ride. With a longer wheelbase you get a more stable and comfortable ride. Often you will experience longer chainstays on gravel bikes, in order to give clearance for the rider´s heels when panniers are mounted. A more slack head tube angle makes handling and control better, and is much less aggressive compared to the race-oriented cx bike.

A REVOLUTION IN SHOE COVER DESIGN Words by Marti Richter, photos by Martin Paldan

For fall/winter, GripGrab has overhauled the lineup of shoe covers almost entirely. The new top of the range models RaceThermo, RaceThermo Hi-Vis, RaceThermo X, Arctic and Arctic X incorporate the award winning IntelliSeal technology, and have reached a new level in functionality and performance.

I

n an effort to solve three problems with shoe covers in one simple solution, the new range of shoe covers features the new IntelliSeal innovation, winner of a Eurobike Award 2017. IntelliSeal is a rubberized coating of the binding at the bottom of the shoe cover. This reduces the tendency of shoe covers getting wet on the inside due to the wicking effect of the material along the edge of the shoe cover, and results in a warmer and dryer construction. It also allows the shoe cover to sit tighter around the sole of the shoe and therefore making it harder for water to get inside the shoe cover from the bottom. Lastly, the rubber coating provides a durable protection from wear and tear and makes the stitches last longer, adding to the overall durability of the shoe covers.

Zipper-less design Accompanied by the IntelliSeal technology, the design of GripGrab’s new range of shoe covers challenges the existing paradigm of how to put on shoe covers. The new zipper-less shoe covers go on before putting on the cycling shoes. This has several advantages: First off, a zipper can break, which can’t happen if you don’t have one. Then there also is no chaffing or rubbing, which could in some cases lead to rider discomfort. Despite the best efforts, zippers often are a weak point when it comes to water resistance. The new design allows the shoe cover to sit tightly around the leg and the shoe, making it more difficult for water to run down the leg and into the shoe cover.

“These high-visibility shoe covers feature an innovative and effective seal around the shoe. The seamless design also makes them very flexible, watertight and comfortable to wear.” – Eurobike Award Jury on RaceThermo Hi-Vis

21

Ride in any condition Scandinavian weather is often wet, windy and cold. Riding in these conditions puts great demands on the equipment for the rider to stay comfortable. GripGrab shoe covers are developed and tested under such conditions, and always with the aim of making it possible to ride and be comfortable in any condition. The GripGrab range of products ranks among the best on the market.

Zipper-less design in short • No zipper • Tight, snug fit • New way of putting on shoe covers • Better water resistance, no chaffing, better fitting IntelliSeal in short • Rubberized bottom part of shoe covers • Prevents the shoe from getting soaked in road spray • Tighter fit keeping road spray away from the shoe • Better durability due to protected stitching

22

“There is no such thing as bad weather. The weather is only a circumstance you need to deal with by chosing the right gear. The weather shouldn´t dictate wether you should ride or not.” – Kristian Krøyer, Head of Design & Development, GripGrab

BAND OF PHOTOGRAPHERS Words by Peter Ebro, photos by Martin Paldan

The perfect moment Sports photography is a genre that attracts amateurs and professionals alike. The challenge of capturing an athlete in the perfect action moment can be frustrating, but mostly rewarding. The excitement of being present at a race or session, and the feeling of getting the cool shots, is a drug for image makers. They keep coming back, and have a strong motivation for developing their skills and techniques. Few get paid and work as professionals, but most action sports photographers shoot because they love capturing the moments. It´s about being present, creative, having fun and identifying oneself as a photographer. Riding directors As a brand established by riders, GripGrab employees and directors are all active athletes, that do morning rides before work, participate in races during the weekends and live and breathe for all aspects of cycling. For GripGrab, the story telling is a natural part of sharing our passion for cycling, and GripGrab is known for high quality imagery made by our in-house photographers (who are also bike enthusiasts). In the spirit of sharing and expanding the interest in cycling and photography, GripGrab has taken the

initiative to host a community for people with the combination of the two interests: Photography and cycling. Online platform and local communities The GripGrab Media Crew is an international community of photographers on all levels. What they have in common is a strong passion for sports photography and the motivation to share this passion with likeminded people. The GripGrab Media Crew exists both as an online forum and also as locally based communities. The aim is to create a shared platform for all members, in which they can develop their photographic skills by being active with their cameras, meet at local photo sessions and get feedback and tips from eachother. Meet-ups A few annual GripGrab Media Crew Meet-ups are held each year at different locations and events throughout Europe, and give the members an opportunity to meet in person and enjoy several days of shooting and sharing photo related experiences. If you´re interested in knowing more about the GripGrab Media Crew, and consider joining, please find out more on gripgrab.com/media-crew.

The GripGrab Media Crew has more than 50 members from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, United Kingdom and the USA. More info on how to join the GripGrab Media Crew community can be found at gripgrab.com/media-crew.
